Trends in Research on Strategic Communication, Strategic Integrated Communication, Personal Branding and Brand Advocacy in the Context of Higher Education

Higher education institutions in South Africa find themselves in situations of strategic complexity due to contextual changes in the higher education landscape. One of these challenges is the complexity of stakeholders within the higher education context, specifically students and alumni. In this regard, students function as internal stakeholders, and once they graduate, they become external stakeholders. Furthermore, due to their connection with a higher education institution, both students and alumni, through their personal brands, can contribute to or diminish strategic communication endeavours by higher education brands. Thus, an integrated communication approach is needed to strategically align student and alumni personal brands with higher education institution brands. Through a systematic literature review, this study explored the integration of relevant concepts to the problem at hand: strategic communication, strategic integrated communication, brand advocacy and personal branding. The conducted review found that these theoretical concepts had limited theoretical overlap with concepts covered in academic articles found on selected academic databases. The absence of interrelatedness between the theoretical foundations and empirical evidence of these concepts highlights the gap in research on the complexity of stakeholders in higher education from a strategic communication perspective. This article adds value to the perspectives on stakeholders in higher education institutions.

Metaphorization in the translation of political texts

AbstractThe translation strategy known as “metaphorization” involves adding a metaphor to the target text when the source text contains either a non-metaphorical expression or nothing at all. This strategy has been identified by Toury (1995, p. 81) in the two abovementioned categories as “non-metaphor into metaphor” and “0 into metaphor”, alongside other typical strategies such as retaining the original metaphor. While there has been research on metaphor translation strategies, the phenomenon of metaphorization remains relatively unexplored. Metaphorization highlights the extra effort translators make beyond conveying what is already in the source text. It is therefore interesting to explore what metaphors translators add to their translations, to understand the contexts in which translators utilize metaphorization, and to discuss the potential influence of metaphorization as such. Taking political discourse as a grounding owing to its richness in metaphor and expressiveness in communicating ideology, this paper seeks to provide some tentative insights into these questions based on a parallel corpus comprising Chinese source texts and English target texts. Drawing on recent developments in cognitive metaphor theories, the phenomenon of metaphorization is analyzed from linguistic, cognitive, and communicative perspectives.

Making sense of generative AI for creating art: An exploratory study

This paper explores how people make sense of generative AI for creating art, and how various meanings that people associate with generative AI for creating art relate to their trust toward generative AI for creating art, general orientation toward technologies, and the level of creativity. Taking a perspective of communication and media studies, the present research reports the findings of an exploratory survey (n = 112) conducted in April 2024. The results suggest that positive orientation toward technologies appears to be most relevant for positive meanings and higher trust toward generative AI in the context of creating art, and more frequent use of AI for creating art was also related to higher level of trust. Proficiency was the factor found to be related to creativity, but positive meanings and trust were not. The present study, although exploratory, shows the relevance of these factors, along with a communication and media perspective, to researching computational creativity, as technology continues to be appropriated into our everyday life.

Pandemics in Human History: Lessons Learned and Lasting Impacts

Health crises, particularly in the form of pandemics, have a long history of destroying and disrupting the political, social, and economic order of organized human societies. There is a continuous endeavor to derive lessons from these historical events to better comprehend, prepare for, and mitigate the impacts of future pandemics. This review article, adopting the perspectives of crisis management and crisis communication, seeks to operationalize historical human experiences in the realm of policy-making. By engaging with both academic and popular literature on past pandemic events, the article endeavors to apply these insights to the COVID-19 pandemic while the crisis was still unfolding. The findings indicate that the most pertinent lessons from past health crises are often not accurately learned or applied, potentially due to political pressures that emerge during such crises.

The power of cross-cultural communication: reception and impact of Chinese variety shows on YouTube

This work investigates the international communication effects of Chinese variety shows on the YouTube platform from the perspective of cross-cultural communication using data analysis, text analysis, and communication strategy research. It is found that program genre, linguistic adaptability, presentation of universal values, and program guest selection influence cross-cultural communication to some extent. Accordingly, the effective ways to enhance the cross-cultural communication effect of Chinese variety shows include strengthening the innovation of program genres, improving the language adaptability and universal values of programs, and optimizing the selection of program guests. In cross-cultural communication, Chinese variety shows should also transform “cultural discount” into “cultural premium,” improve the operation ability of international platforms, and promote accurate global communication through localization.

Sociology of Communication: Analysing Social Inequality and Community Integration in Limau Village, Banyuasin Regency

Social disparities between hamlets caused by economic differences, technology accessibility, and education levels have an impact on communication patterns and community interactions, where inequality in Access to information can strengthen social hierarchies, stereotypes, and social exclusion among community groups. This study aims to analyse the social gap between hamlets in community interaction through the sociology of communication perspective. The research method used is a qualitative approach with the type of phenomenology. Data collection techniques were participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. This research was conducted in Limau village, Sembawa District, Banyuasin Regency. The informants in this study were local village officials. The results show that social disparities, such as educational level differences, access to resources, and cultural traditions, create significant communication barriers. This leads to limited social interaction and the emergence of stereotypes and prejudices between Hamlet residents. However, there were also efforts by the community and local leaders to reduce these disparities through joint activities and intergroup dialogue. The study concludes that an in-depth understanding of the communication dynamics and social factors underlying the gaps can be the foundation for building more harmonious and inclusive interactions between hamlets. The results of this study make an important contribution to understanding the socio-cultural dynamics that occur in Limau Village with three culturally distinct hamlets. It recommends several approaches to reduce social inequality in Limau Village, including strengthening education programs and increasing community literacy to address the root of the problem, which is identified as a lack of understanding and knowledge.

Research on the Presentation of Chinese Elements in American Science Fiction Films and Cross-Cultural Communication

Against the backdrop of globalization and the complex relationship between the Chinese and American film industries, integrating Chinese elements into Hollywood science fiction films has drawn significant attention. This study focuses on the perspective of cross-cultural communication. It takes 15 Chinese audiences who have watched relevant films as the research objects, uses the semi-structured interview method, and combines the Uses and Gratifications Theory and Acculturation Theory for research. The results show that the presentation of Chinese elements in American science fiction films is complex and diverse. The integration of characters shows a polarized trend. The integration of scenes enhances the effect by combining real and artistic scenes. Technology integration showcases Chinas scientific and technological achievements and promotes the plot. At the same time, the presentation effect of Chinese elements affects the emotional response and cultural identity of the audience. A positive presentation can enhance the communication effect, while a negative one can hinder it. This study provides empirical support for the development of cross-cultural communication theories and also offers references for film producers.

Development of Health Tourism Promotion – The Case of Kvarner Health Tourism Cluster

This paper examines the Croatian region of Kvarner as one of the most popular tourism destinations in Croatia and the way in which health tourism contributes to a better image of the destination. The promotional activities of health tourism are examined from a communication and economic perspective. Using the example of the Kvarner Health Tourism Cluster, authors are examining which promotional tools the cluster uses to popularize health tourism in Kvarner, but also how the organizations that belong to the cluster contribute to the destination attractiveness. The Kvarner Health Tourism Cluster was chosen as a case for the analysis as it enjoys a high status and recognition in the international environment, which is confirmed by the fact that it is a multiple finalist and winner of the IMTJ Medical Travel Awards and selected for some other prestigious awards in health tourism. The development of the Kvarner Health Tourism Cluster in promotional activities and economic indicators are tracked from 2016 to the present days. The authors want to find out how promotional tools and strategies have changed over the years and how this has affected the economic success of the cluster and associated organizations. The contribution of this paper is reflected in the identification of the most important promotional approaches and strategies for creating an image of an attractive destination for health tourism, as well as the most important economic indicators of health tourism success. Health tourism is also analyzed through examining different forms of health tourism, such as dental tourism. By comparing different forms of health tourism, the authors aim to describe the similarities and differences in promotion and economic indicators in relation to each form of tourism within the cluster. The “architecture” of the cluster is examined to show how the organizations are connected and contribute to the success of the cluster in general.

A Study on ChatGPT Film and Television Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Three-Dimensional Transformation---Take The Story of Minglan for example

Based on the theory of Eco-translatology, this article conducts a study on the subtitle translation of the overseas version of the TV drama The Story of Minglan from the perspective of “three-dimensional transformation,” focusing on the translation generated by ChatGPT, and comparing them with Google Translation, Baidu Translation, and DeepL Translation, aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of ChatGPT in subtitle translation for films and television shows. Firstly, this research employs a quantitative analysis method by using two automatic assessment metrics, BLEU and TER, in order to quantify translation quality. Furthermore, case study and qualitative analysis methods are used to compare and analyze the differences in accuracy, linguistic fluency, and cultural adaptability between the YouTube subtitles of the overseas version of The Story of Minglan and the translation generated by ChatGPT from the perspectives of language, culture, and communication. The results indicate that while ChatGPT translations exhibit some readability, the model still shows limitations in handling ideological issues, cultural transmission, emotional capture, and translation accuracy.

Translation of Government Portal News from an International Communication Perspective: A Case Study

The government portal in a foreign language is an important communication platform for improving city image and promoting international exchanges. News translation for the portal is in nature a communication act. To achieve good communication effect, Lasswell’s 5Ws model can serve as useful guidance. In the translation process, translators need to familiarize themselves with the differences between news in English and news in Chinese and translate with an initiator-awareness so as to ensure correct translation of political expressions, expressions on China’s stand and meaning conveyed in the original Chinese news, with an target-reader awareness so as to decide what to translate and translate in a way that is readable and acceptable to target readers, and with a communication-effect awareness so as to increase cognitive alignment in target language readers.

Dialogue on difference: Invisible bridges and barriers of community-engaged research

ABSTRACT Across the social sciences, researchers increasingly are adopting community-engaged research methods to address social problems. Communication researchers still face disciplinary, bureaucratic, and paradigmatic challenges in developing research programs in community-engaged methods. Concomitantly, the larger body of literature on community-engaged research is poorer because of the lack of communication perspectives informing it. Through this collaborative “forum” essay, a diverse group of community-engaged health communication scholars offer experiential insights to address this double dilemma. We offer a reflexive account of the “risks and rewards” of community-engaged research for communication researchers. We then demonstrate how communication perspectives enliven the process of engaging communities in research. Both facets are discussed at the interpersonal, institutional, community, and policy levels, with the objective of broadening the knowledge on community-engaged research practices.

Research on Challenges in the Construction of University Teaching Staff — Taking Foreign Language Universities as an Example

With the accelerated development of globalization, higher education in China in foreign languages is constantly undergoing innovative transformations. There are increasing demands for the cultivation of interdisciplinary talents in foreign languages. The shortage of specialized teaching staff, particularly high-level talents, is a critical issue that urgently needs to be addressed in developing and transforming foreign language universities. How to effectively structure the foreign language teaching staff, ensure the sustainable development of the teaching faculty, and strengthen the ideological and political development of the teaching staff are important challenges that must be resolved in the process of building a high-level university. The modern tendencies of teaching foreign languages in higher school are analyzed. Reforming the educational process in HEI according to the European standards is taken into consideration. The crucial objective of teaching foreign languages nowadays is the student’s communicative competence. Qualified language preparation is impossible without using innovative educational technologies. For this purpose, the programs of the teachers' continuing professional development ought to be designed to enhance their cross-cultural communication skills and global outlook. They can be achieved through international academic exchanges, foreign training, and joint research with international institutions. The modern methods of teaching foreign languages using innovative educational technologies are revealed. A more scientific and reasonable evaluation of teaching staff should be made, such as the teaching performance and research achievements, as well as the contribution to the development of an international perspective and abilities in cross-cultural communication. This will inspire enthusiasm among teachers to constantly improve and innovate their teaching activities and will, therefore, stimulate the general development of teaching staff in foreign language universities.
