Exploratory study for implementing a Global Burden of Animal Diseases case study in Senegal.

Senegal is a West African country with both extensive animal production systems, representative of the environmental, economic and animal health constraints specific to the Sahel region, and thriving commercial poultry and dairy production. An exploratory study was conducted in Senegal between 2021 and 2022 as a prelude to a case study of the Global Burden of Animal Diseases (GBADs) programme. An overview of existing animal production systems as well as the main priorities and issues in animal health on a national level was developed. A national workshop gathering representatives from the livestock production and academic sectors took place in Dakar in June 2022 with the objective of jointly developing a case study. The participants prioritised pastoralist production systems for cattle and agropastoral systems for small ruminants for the application of the GBADs programme. Through a series of activities, the participants highlighted the health, environmental, economic and socio-political challenges surrounding these systems, all of which limit their contribution to the well-being of pastoralist households, consumers and other stakeholders. While Senegal has in the past hosted a large number of research and cooperative projects on these two livestock systems, participants noted difficulties in obtaining, centralising and harmonising the existing data. This exploratory study led to the funding of a focused case study of the agropastoral small-ruminant sector that was carried out in 2023 in partnership with national and international organisations.

The risk of acquiring avian influenza from commercial poultry products and hen eggs: A qualitative assessment

High pathogenicity and low pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI and LPAI) viruses primarily infect birds, but they can also cause illness in other species, including humans. Some avian influenza (AI) strains can cause fatality rates of over 50 % in human infections. In October 2021, there was a substantial increase in the number of AI infections reported in birds in the UK. Given concerns that more infected and/or contaminated poultry products might reach retail, a risk assessment was performed to ensure that advice relating to the handling and consumption of these products remained appropriate.The products considered in this risk assessment were commercial chicken and turkey products, farmed duck and geese products, and table eggs. The risk pathway included the likelihood animals or eggs from an infected flock would be sent for further processing, whether the resulting products would be released to retail after inspection, viral persistence during distribution and storage, and the ability of AI viruses to infect humans via the gastrointestinal route. The risk from any AI virus, not just the A(H5N1) strain that began circulating in 2021, was considered. Data was obtained from literature searches and FSA surveys.The risk assessment determined that the likelihood of human infection with AI from poultry products for the UK population from handling and consuming commercial chicken or turkey products was negligible with low uncertainty, and for farmed duck and geese products was very low with medium uncertainty. The likelihood of infection for people in the UK from handling and consuming hen table eggs was very low with low uncertainty. The uncertainty rankings relate to the differing amounts of data available for each group of poultry products. The severity of illness in humans from AI infection was considered high with medium uncertainty. The conclusions of this risk assessment for UK consumers largely reflected advice and assessments from other countries and previous UK assessments. Given this, current guidance for handling and consuming poultry products was considered appropriate despite the increase in infections in birds during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 avian flu seasons. Since AI viruses were considered generally, these risk characterisations may need to be revisited based on evidence specific to a circulating virus to support risk management decisions.

In vitro and genomic mining studies of anti-Clostridium perfringens Compounds Derived from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens

Clostridium perfringens is an important opportunistic microorganism in commercial poultry production that is implicated in necrotic enteritis (NE) outbreaks. This disease poses a severe financial burden on the global poultry industry, causing estimated annual losses of $6 billion globally. The ban on in-feed antibiotic growth promoters has spurred investigations into approaches of alternatives to antibiotics, among which Bacillus probiotics have demonstrated varying degrees of effectiveness against NE. However, the precise mechanisms underlying Bacillus-mediated beneficial effects on host responses in NE remain to be further elucidated. In this manuscript, we conducted in vitro and genomic mining analysis to investigate anti-C. perfringens activity observed in the supernatants derived from 2 Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strains (FS1092 and BaD747). Both strains demonstrated potent anti-C. perfringens activities in in vitro studies. An analysis of genomes from 15 B. amyloliquefaciens, 11 B. velezensis, and 2 B. subtilis strains has revealed an intriguing clustering pattern among strains known to possess anti-C. perfringens activities. Furthermore, our investigation has identified 7 potential antimicrobial compounds, predicted as secondary metabolites through antiSMASH genomic mining within the published genomes of B. amyloliquefaciens species. Based on in vitro analysis, BaD747 may have the potential as a probiotic in the control of NE. These findings not only enhance our understanding of B. amyloliquefaciens's action against C. perfringens but also provide a scientific rationale for the development of novel antimicrobial therapeutic agents against NE.

Detection of Salmonella Pathogenicity Islands and Antimicrobial-Resistant Genes in Salmonella enterica Serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium Isolated from Broiler Chickens.

Rapid growth in commercial poultry production is one of the major sources of Salmonella infections that leads to human salmonellosis. The two main Salmonella enterica serovars associated with human salmonellosis are enteritidis and typhimurium. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of S. enterica serovars Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium as well as their Salmonella pathogenicity islands (SPI) and antibiotic resistance profiles in broiler chicken feces from slaughterhouses. A total of 480 fecal samples from broiler chickens that were grouped into 96 pooled samples were identified to have Salmonella spp. using the invA gene, whilst the Spy and sdfI genes were used to screen for the presence of S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium serovars, respectively, by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. The isolates were also screened for the presence of Salmonella pathogenicity islands (SPIs) using PCR. The disc diffusion assay was performed to determine the antibiotic resistance profiles of the isolates. A total of 36 isolates were confirmed as Salmonella spp. through amplification of the invA gene. Out of 36 confirmed Salmonella spp. a total of 22 isolates were classified as S. Enteritidis (n = 8) and were S. Typhimurium (n = 14) serovars. All (n = 22) S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium isolates possessed the hilA (SPI-1), ssrB (SPI-2) and pagC (SPI-11) pathogenicity islands genes. Amongst these serovars, 50% of the isolates (n = 11/22) were resistant to tetracycline and nalidixic acid. Only 22% of the isolates, S. Typhimurium (13.6%) and S. Enteritidis (9.1%) demonstrated resistance against three or more antibiotic classes. The most detected antibiotic resistance genes were tet(K), mcr-1, sulI and strA with 13 (59.1%), 9 (40.9%), 9 (40.9%) and 7 (31.8%), respectively. The findings of this study revealed that S. Typhimurium is the most prevalent serotype detected in chicken feces. To reduce the risk to human health posed by salmonellosis, a stringent public health and food safety policy is required.

Comparison effects of Natural and Artificial lighting on selected blood physiological variables of broilers grown to 56 days of age

Light is one of the major enviro-climatic factors in poultry houses that influences physiology and metabolic processes and impact poultry welfare, health, production and behaviors. This study compared the effects of natural and artificial lighting on selected blood physiological variables of broilers grown to 56 days of age. In each of the two trials, a total of 704 (352 males/352 females) 1-d- old Ross x Ross 708 chicks were obtained from a commercial hatchery on day of hatch. The design structure was a randomized complete block design with two treatments and eight replications per trial. Birds were equally and randomly distributed into 16 environmentally controlled rooms in groups of 44 (22 males/22 females) per room. Thus, each of the two treatments were represented by eight rooms with total of sixteen replicates. Temperature and RH on d 1 were maintained at 90 ± 2.1°F and 50 ± 5%, respectively across all treatments rooms. Temperature was decreased by 4 °F per week until it reached 66 °F at 56 d of age. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. Birds were provided a four phase-feeding program (Starter: 0-14 d, Grower: 15-28 d, Finisher: 29-42 d, and Withdrawal: 43-56 d). Blood samples (3 ml) were collected from the brachial wing vein of 3 males and 3 females birds per room on d 28, 42, and 56 which were then analyzed immediately for whole blood physiological variables. Blood plasma samples were analyzed for T3, T4, and corticosterone concentrations. Results showed that artificial light significantly increased sO2 (P < 0.049), SaO2 (P < 0.031), and decreased RHb (P < 0.044) which may be due to slight difference in body weights, but the changes were all within physiological ranges for this species. In addition, blood glucose and plasma corticosterone concentrations were not affected by treatments, signify a similar level of physiological stress between the two light types. In conclusion, physiological variables examined in this study were unaffected by both natural and artificial lighting. However, birds exposed to artificial lighting had slightly increased body weight in comparison with birds reared under natural lighting, which may have a significant impact in commercial poultry production. Molecular And Serological Detection Of Newcastle Disease Virus In Live-Bird Markets, Jos, Plateau State In Nigeria

Newcastle disease (ND) is a highly infectious viral disease of birds caused by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and it has been reported in domestic birds in Nigeria. Waterfowls and village poultry in live bird markets (LBM) acts as reservoirs, potentially reintroducing the virus to commercial poultry. This study aims at molecular and serological detection of NDV at live bird markets in Plateau State, Nigeria. A cross sectional analysis involved 309 pooled cloacal and tracheal swabs over three months were analyzed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), RT-qPCR, virus isolation and haemagglutination and haemagglutinationinhibition test (HA &HI). Virus isolation was attempted in 9 to 11 days old specific antibody negative (SAN) embryonated chicken eggs and fifteen samples showed haemagglutination. Subsequent tests confimed nine of these as NDV positive through haemagglutination and haemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests. Conventional RT-PCR and RT-qPCR further validated five of the nine NDV positive isolates. The phylogenetic analysis of partial F gene nucleotide sequences revealed that all three isolates belonged to class II genotype XIV.2_XIVb. This finding underscores the persistent threat of NDV to local poultry, necessitating comprehensive virological surveillance to understand, isolate and characterize the virus in Nigeria. Therefore, monitoring for emerging lineages and sub-lineages in Nigeria birds is crucial for safeguarding commercial poultry production.

Poultry consumption and perceptions in Tehsil Shakargarh, Punjab, Pakistan: Implications for public health during COVID-19

This study investigated the habits and attitudes of individuals towards poultry consumption, utilizing primary data collected through a survey of 5 households from 285 localities in Tehsil Shakargarh, Punjab, Pakistan (n = 1425). Household selection was randomized, and personal visits were conducted for data collection via formal interviews employing a structured questionnaire. Coordinates for each site were obtained using a Garmin eTrex device, in conjunction with meteorological data, to determine global positioning system (GPS) coordinates. A notable portion of respondents (38.8 %) possessed basic knowledge, while the majority (61.2 %) demonstrated intermediate knowledge regarding commercial broilers (chickens raised for meat production). A significant proportion (70.3 %) harbored misconceptions about the inclusion of hormones/antibiotics in poultry feed, with a minority (0.2 %) misinformed about broiler chickens' leg weakness. Some respondents (17.3 %) held both misconceptions, while others (12.2 %) had none. The majority (97.6 %) favored egg consumption, with 51.7 % preferring commercial chicken eggs and 48.3 % opting for domestic chicken eggs. Preference for white-colored eggs (51.5 %) slightly outweighed that for brown-colored eggs (48.5 %). A minority (1.3 %) speculated that poultry consumption could be a potential cause of COVID-19, while the majority (65.7 %) disagreed, and a portion (33.0 %) remained uncertain. Nearly all respondents (99.9 %) believed in the immunity-boosting properties of protein intake, with 65 % associating such benefits with poultry meat and eggs. Similarly, 99.7 % did not encounter difficulties in accessing poultry products during lockdowns. Approximately half (46.3 %) of respondents believed that consuming well-cooked and safely handled poultry meat was safe during outbreaks. Poultry meat and eggs emerged as potentially efficient sources of nutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for protein-deficient populations like Pakistan. Therefore, initiatives should focus on enhancing commercial poultry production and educating the populace about its advantages.

Vaccine Immunogenicity versus Gastrointestinal Microbiome Status: Implications for Poultry Production

At the turn of the 21st century, the importance of maintaining a balanced microbiome was brought to the forefront of the microbiology, immunology, and physiology research fields. Exploring the complex interactions between vaccine administration, mucosal microbiome, oral tolerance, and enteric inflammation in health and disease is challenging since environmental factors (such as diet and sanitation) have major influences on gut microbiota composition. High enteric pathogen load has been shown to contribute to dampened cell-mediated and humoral immune responses to vaccines in human case studies, either through elevated enteric inflammation or increased tolerance to environmental microbes. Although antibiotic and probiotic interventions have been evaluated in human health as well as research animal models, effective measures to mediate vaccine hyporesponsiveness are still ill-defined. Research in this field is becoming increasingly important for managing flock health in commercial poultry production, especially as antibiotic-free production is more prevalent and vaccination programs remain extensive during the first weeks of a bird’s life. By understanding the cellular interactions between commensal microbiota, vaccine antigens, and the host immune system (particularly in avian models), advancements in bacterial and viral vaccine immunogenicity could lead to improved flock health in meat-type and egg-type chickens in the future.

An Overview of Future Development Methods of Infectious Bronchitis Vaccines

Vaccines are major disease-controlling tools in human and animal practices. Vaccination controlled or even eradicated a long list of diseases worldwide. Classic viral vaccines are usually composed of live or inactivated whole viruses and have been produced for many years. However, they are unsuccessful, especially in persistent infections, fast-evolving viruses, complex and compound antigens, and emerging agents. Novel vaccine development technologies such as DNA, protein, or viral vector vaccines have revolutionized vaccine development and opened a new horizon for study and research in vaccine research and production vision. Newly-developed vaccines, or even most traditional ones, are based on new technologies, especially in human diseases where cost and complications in production can be ignored. However, in animal health, especially for commercial poultry production, the cost of development, simplicity, and mass application of large-scale production cannot be overlooked. In recent years, the significance of producing novel vaccines has been highlighted in parallel with technological advancement, especially with emerging novel variants of infectious bronchitis viruses—serious poultry pathogens for years. In this review, we will introduce some studies on novel vaccine development techniques and investigate the results of those vaccines in the protection of chickens and their clinical outcomes.

177 Functional Annotation of an Array of Immune Cells and Various Tissues in the Chicken

Abstract Infection and disease negatively affect performance, growth, and health in production animals and has major economic impacts on commercial poultry production. Regulatory elements control the expression of genes and consequently phenotype. Epigenetic modifications such as histone tail modifications and DNA methylation are not only key to the regulation of unique transcriptome patterns, these modifications are indispensable as genome annotators to uncover cell- and tissue-specific regulatory elements. The objectives of our current projects are to leverage transcriptomic and epigenomic methods to annotate transcripts, coding and noncoding, and cis-regulatory elements in the chicken genome, including promoters, enhancers and insulators. In addition, we are employing single-cell sequencing to characterize new or rare cell populations in tissues relevant to production and investigate underlying mechanisms of disease resistance to pathogens. The transcriptome of a number of important cells and tissues has been analyzed, including immune, intestinal and reproductive. The animal procedure was approved and conducted according to guidelines established by the Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, California (WesternU) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Cell and tissue collection, processing and bioinformatic analysis for transcriptome studies were performed as described in Overbey et al. (2021; Frontiers Genetics). Single-cell studies were performed as described in Sparling et al. (2022; Journal of Immunology) using the 10x Genomics platform. Results for the transcriptome studies show that in the immune cells, many DEGs were mostly involved in cellular processes relating to differentiation and cell metabolism as well as basic functions of immune cells such as cell adhesion and signal transduction. This was to be expected, as there was no explicit immunological stimulus involved. Nevertheless, it was notable that DEGs in the comparison between bursa and thymus that were upregulated in the thymus were related to T cell differentiation and maturation. On the other hand, genes differentially upregulated in B cell vs Bursa or Bursa vs Thymus, are mostly involved in B cell development and differentiation, or activation. Genes differentially regulated in B cells and monocytes are involved in specific functions of the cell types. In the intestinal tissues, we were able to correlate most of the differential expressed genes to metabolic processes related to nutrient digestion and absorption. Several genes in the distal part of the intestine were particularly implicated in vitamin metabolism. Genes involved in energy metabolism are also abundant in the cecum, which suggests that microbial contribution of energy production in the intestine is especially important. Finally, single cell studies on the chicken shell gland are ongoing, but we found differences in cellular populations and gene expression dependent on the chicken haplotype profiled and differences in expression of Ig-like receptors that need to be further explored.

Review on Poultry Production System, Trends and Development Strategies in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has considerable livestock resource and poultry population is second ranked preceded by cattle. Besides their important and numbers, little is known about their production systems, population growth, egg utilization trends and development strategies in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian poultry population is almost entirely composed of indigenous chicken and recent estimates showed that poultry 81.7%, 10.9%, and 7.4% are indigenous, hybrids and exotic, respectively. The distribution of poultry population in Ethiopia is diverging from region to region. Oromia region has the largest number of poultry population followed by Amhara, South Nation and Nationality People of Ethiopia (SNNP). Poultry production system in Ethiopia is indigenous and an integral part of farming system. Based on the objective, breed, flock size, housing, feeding, health, biosecurity level and technology used, the poultry production system in Ethiopia can be classified into extensive or scavenging, semi-intensive, small-scale intensive and large scale commercial poultry production system. The extensive scavenging and small-extensive scavenging systems are the dominant forms of poultry production in Ethiopia. The poultry population growth over the year almost stagnant because of high poultry mortality due to lack of adaptation of introduced exotic poultry, diseases, predators prevalent in the scavenging production systems and limited expansion of commercial poultry production both in terms of number of operators and volume of operation. The poultry sector did not have a clear roadmap guiding its development until the recent production of the LMP. The future study should be attention on to expansion of large-scale commercial poultry production system, constraints of poultry population growth, adaption of introduced exotic poultry breeds and the reason for eggs sale and household consumption fluctuated.

Impact of Stocking Densities on the Microbiota of the Cloaca, Eggshell, and Egg Content of White Egg Layers in Colony Cages

Food safety is a major concern for commercial poultry producers and consumers. Currently, there is also pressure from retailers and legislators to increase the space per hen in cages. Five different density treatments consisting of six (208 in2/bird), nine (139 in2/bird), twelve (104 in2/bird), fifteen (83 in2/bird), and eighteen birds (69 in2/bird) per cage were examined in colony cage environments. Microbiological tests were performed at 39, 55, and 68 weeks of age. The populations of total aerobic bacteria; E. coli/coliform; Enterobacteriaceae; and yeasts and molds from an eggshell rinse, egg content, and cloacal swabs were enumerated. The prevalence of Salmonella spp. in these samples was also monitored. Overall, no bacteria were detected in any of the egg content, and there were no differences (p > 0.05) between treatments for the shell rinse. Stocking density did not influence the eggshell microbiota of the hens. Hens housed at 104 in2 per hen showed higher levels of total aerobic bacterial counts from the cloaca compared to hens at 208 in2 and 69 in2 per hen. Hens housed at 139 in2 per hen had the highest level of cloacal molds. This research demonstrates that stocking density does not influence eggshell microbiota or Salmonella contamination of the eggshell or cloaca, thereby indicating that allowing more space per hen will not positively or negatively affect the prevalence or concentration of foodborne pathogen-associated bacteria in or on the eggs.

A 3D-Printed Electrochemical Immunosensor Employing Cd/Se ZnS QDs as Labels for the Rapid and Ultrasensitive Detection of Salmonella typhimurium in Poultry Samples

Salmonella is one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses worldwide, with poultry products being a major source of contamination. Thus, the detection of salmonella in commercial poultry products is crucial to minimize the effects on public health. Electrochemical sensors are promising tools for bacteria detection due to their sensitivity, simplicity, and potential for on-site analysis. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) printed electrochemical immunosensor for the determination of Salmonella typhimurium in fresh chicken through a sandwich immunoassay employing biotinylated anti-S. typhimurium antibody followed by streptavidin labeled with Cd/Se ZnS quantum dots (QDs) is presented. The device features three carbon-black polylactic acid electrodes and a holder, and the quantification of S. typhimurium is performed by anodic stripping voltametric (ASV) determination of the Cd(II) released after acidic dissolution of the QDs. To enhance sensitivity, an electroplated bismuth film was deposited on the working electrode, achieving a detection limit of 5 cfu/mL in a total assay time of 25 min, whereas 5 h of sample pre-enrichment was required for the detection of 1 cfu/25 mL of chicken rinse and chicken broth. The method is accurate, with %recovery values ranging from 93.3 to 113% in fresh chicken samples, and repeatable with intra- and inter- assay coefficient of variations <2 and 5%, respectively, indicating the suitability of the proposed immunosensor for the detection of S. typhimurium at the point-of-need.

Mapping of dressed and processed poultry products in Bangladesh: Identifying the food safety risks for policy intervention

Bangladesh’s commercial poultry production is growing rapidly, including the commercial processing of poultry. This expansion of poultry processing plants is fueled by the belief that this sub-sector provides safer food and has less food-borne disease risks compared to traditional live bird markets (LBMs). The purpose of this study is to describe Bangladesh’s dressed and processed poultry production and distribution network (PDN), identify what and where quality control occurs, and suggest where improvements could be made. Engaging with PDN for dressed and processed poultry, we used in-depth interviews with key informants to identify the stakeholders involved and their connections with other poultry PDNs. In addition, we mapped out the supply and distribution of dressed and processed poultry and quality control processes occurring throughout the network. We argue that dressed and processed poultry PDNs are closely connected with traditional PDNs such as LBMs, with multiple crossover points between them. Also, there is a lack of consistency in quality control testing and a lack of meat traceability. Consequently, perceptions of dressed and processed poultry being safer than birds from LBMs needs to be treated with caution. Otherwise, unsubstantiated consumer confidence in dressed poultry may inadvertently increase the risk of food-borne diseases from these products.

Evidence of host specificity in Lactobacillus johnsonii genomes and its influence on probiotic potential in poultry

To date, the selection of candidate strains for probiotic development in production animals has been largely based upon screens for desired phenotypic traits. However, increasing evidence indicates that the use of host-specific strains may be important, because coevolution with the animal host better prepares a bacterial strain to colonize and succeed in its respective host animal species. This concept was applied to Lactobacillus johnsonii in commercial poultry production because of its previous correlation with enhanced bird performance. Using 204 naturally isolated chicken- and turkey-source L. johnsonii, we demonstrate that there is a strong phylogenetic signal for coevolution with the animal host. These isolates differ phenotypically, even within host source, and these differences can be correlated with certain L. johnsonii phylogenetic clades. In commercial turkey poults, turkey-specific strains with strong in vitro phenotypes performed better early in life than strains lacking those phenotypes. A follow-up performance trial in broiler chickens demonstrated that chicken-specific strains result in better overall bird performance than nonchicken-specific strains. Collectively, this work provides evidence for the impact of host adaptation on a probiotic strain's potential. Furthermore, this top-down approach is useful for screening larger numbers of isolates for probiotic candidates.

An assessment of the highly pathogenic avian influenza resurgence at human-poultry-environment interface in North-central Nigeria: Sociocultural determinants and One Health implications

Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 resurgence has occurred in Nigerian domestic bird flocks with public health concern. This study assessed poultry farmers' knowledge, perceptions, and biosecurity and biosafety practices regarding H5N1 resurgence, explore risk pathways for viral dissemination and associated socio-cultural and economic drivers in poultry flocks in Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in randomly selected two poultry production systems, commercial intensive poultry production system and the backyard traditional free-range poultry production system. A One Health framework model was conceptualized to assess inter-links of biophysical, environmental, and sociocultural activities that interface to drive resurgence for better interventions. Descriptive and analytical statistical analyses were performed at 95% confidence level. Of the 422 recruited poultry farmers, 98.6% (n = 416) participated. Majorities of smallholder commercial farmers (93.5%) and backyard poultry keepers (97.7%) engaged in intensive and extensive management, respectively. Identified significant zoonotic risk pathways for H5N1 virus spread were through consumption of undercooked poultry meat and products, and contacts with infected birds and contaminated fomites. Separation of sick birds from apparently healthy ones, frequent cleaning and disinfection of equipment and premises, movement control of birds to nearby water bodies, use of personal protective equipment, and movement control of persons and vehicles into the flock settlements were significantly practiced biosecurity measures. Presence of nearby water bodies (ponds) close to flock settlements (p < 0.001), frequent contact of wild and domestic birds (p < 0.001), cultural practice of bird exchange between flocks (p < 0.001), and wild waterfowls' seasonal migrations (p < 0.001) significantly influenced resurgence. Understanding determinants interactions in the ‘Conceptual One Health framework model’ is required for better intercontinental intervention against HPAI H5N1. Reform of socio-cultural and economic activities using One Health approach will not only assure food safety and food security, but also guarantee public and environmental health.

A REVIEW ON AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF POULTRY MEAT PRODUCTION IN NEPAL

Poultry meat is one of the dynamic Agriculture subsector in Nepal which accounts about 4% of total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This review was done to study the population, production (egg and meat) and distribution of poultry in Nepal. In order to meet the demand of poultry produce, the commercial poultry production has increased about more than double the last decade. Nepal lies at 112th position for chicken meat production of world, which is at the 92nd for egg production in world. The recent data of 2021/22 shows the poultry meat production is 65,387 tonnes growing at an average annual rate of 6.60%. The cost of production includes variable cost and fixed cost, Various investment patterns in farms their respective values and worked out the level of significance was analyzed. The analysis of net return was differed significantly with farm size with higher net return in large farm so that the result reveal that large farm has higher mass of meat production and lower feed conversion rate indicating higher profit margin with enlarge in farm size. it was concluded that the poultry Meat producing farms are profitable and they possesses high growth potentials which are achievable through increased investment and proper management of identified constraints and recommended that broiler farmers should increase their flock size, develop the skills of record keeping and feed formulation to reduce feed cost.

Effects of Perching on Poultry Welfare and Production: A Review

Perching is one of the essential natural behaviors for avian species. Providing an optimal perching design (e.g., shape, dimension, and materials) for commercial poultry production is critical for maintaining bird health, welfare, and production efficiency. This review paper summarized poultry perching studies and discussed the relationship between perch design, bird welfare, and production efficiency. Providing perches at an early stage may ensure optimum use during adulthood, reduce perching accidents, and lower the risk of floor eggs in cage-free (CF) hen houses. Therefore, a perch space of 15 cm per bird is recommended for the CF hen house. Similarly, rectangular perches are preferred to circular perches as the rectangular perch provides hens with an excellent tendon-locking mechanism to prevent slipping. In addition, perches with softer materials such as polyurethane and rubber coverings are recommended to increase the contact surface on the chicken’s toes. Perching behavior (PB) promotes a musculocutaneous system and reduces the incidences of footpad dermatitis and lesions. Generally, providing perching may reduce aggression and stress in birds and improve welfare and production efficiency. In the case of broilers, it is found that the broiler perches less during the latter stage of their lives because they are comparatively heavier and exhibit a more inactive lifestyle. Studies have investigated the effect of the surface temperature of the perch on broilers’ welfare. Perches with lower temperatures help improve performance and welfare by relieving heat stress and leg issues. Overall, PB is required to improve bird health and welfare.

Research-by-Design in Complex Systems: Reflections on Approaches Used to Reimagine Environmentally Sustainable, High-Welfare Poultry Housing Futures

Despite projected global rises in chicken consumption, growing environmental and welfare challenges threaten the future of commercial poultry production. Though some of these challenges, such as biosecurity, sourcing, pollution, and waste, have been thoroughly researched, the open-ended, complex, and interrelated nature of the sector means that it is difficult for poultry producers to know how to change. Design may offer a new way to analyse and reframe these challenges, to speculate on a range of different solutions for these complex systems of production. This paper reflects on the research-by-design methods applied to reimagine environmentally sustainable, high-welfare poultry housing futures. The paper is based on an eighteen-month long, multidisciplinary research project with a large U.K.-based poultry farming integrator, a poultry house ventilation and equipment supplier, and academic partners with expertise in research-by-design and bird welfare. After contextualising challenges faced by the poultry sector, the paper outlines a three-step, iterative approach within which design methods were applied, beginning with (1) a baseline analysis of farm inputs, outputs, actors, and networks, and then (2) a consolidation of themes and scenarios, leading to the development of (3) a compendium of ideas for the future of poultry farming. The Results section presents three design propositions, each imagining different futures by recreating the farm as a system of “closed-loop” flows, reframing the “chicken as client” and challenging current centralised models of production to connect consumers to food provenance and impact. These propositions function as vehicles to test design methods, such as designing for resource flows challenging actor hierarchies and hacking stakeholder networks. While some interesting ideas are presented, the paper highlights the complexity of the challenge and reflects on the value of design to reframe these challenges to collaboratively foster new perspectives and mindsets.
