Dynamic three-dimensional deformation measurement by polarization-multiplexing of full complex amplitude.

This paper provides an extensive discussion of a complex amplitude-based dynamic three-dimensional deformation measurement method, in which the phase and amplitude of the speckle field are used for out-of-plane and in-plane deformation calculation respectively. By determining the optimal polarization states of the speckle field and reference field from the comprehensive analysis of measurement mathematical model in the principle of polarization multiplexing, the 3-step phase-shifting interferograms and one speckle gram can be directly recorded by a polarization camera in a single shot. The out-of-plane deformation would be recovered from the subtraction of speckle phases that are demodulated by a special least square algorithm; speckle gram with improved quality is offered for correlation computation to obtain in-plane deformation. The advancement and significance of the optimized strategy are intuitively demonstrated by comparing the measurement accuracy under different combinations of polarization states. Finally, the dynamic thermal deformation experiment reveals the potential in practical real-time applications.

Segmented cylindrical vector beams for massively-encoded optical data storage

The possibility to achieve unprecedented multiplexing of light-matter interaction in nanoscale is of virtue importance from both fundamental science and practical application points of view. Cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) manifested as polarization vortices represent a robust and emerging degree of freedom for information multiplexing with increased capacities. Here, we propose and demonstrate massively-encoded optical data storage (ODS) by harnessing spatially variant electric fields mediated by segmented CVBs. By tight focusing polychromatic segmented CVBs to plasmonic nanoparticle aggregates, record-high multiplexing channels of ODS through different combinations of polarization states and wavelengths have been experimentally demonstrated with a low error rate. Our result not only casts new perceptions for tailoring light-matter interactions utilizing structured light but also enables a new prospective for ultra-high capacity optical memory with minimalist system complexity by combining CVB’s compatibility with fiber optics.

Effects of polarization and phase modulation on the focal spot in 4Pi microscopy

In 4Pi microscopy, the intensity and polarization distributions of the focal spot directly determine the system resolution, influencing its extended applications. This paper illustrates how the focal spot is affected by the polarization and phase modulation of the incident beams. Various combinations of polarization states and phase modulations are considered and their effects on the focal spot are investigated. The optimal configurations for generating a solid spot and a doughnut-shaped spot are proposed. This paper provides the theoretical basis and reference for extended applications, such as super-resolution confocal microscopy, 4Pi microscopy or 4Pi-STED microscopy.

Polarization and retinal image quality estimates in the human eye.

We have previously studied how polarization affects the double-pass estimates of the retinal image quality by using an imaging polarimeter [Opt. Lett. 24, 64 (1999)]. A series of 16 images for independent combinations of polarization states in the polarimeter were recorded to obtain the spatially resolved Mueller matrices of the eye. From these matrices, double-pass images of a point source for light with different combinations of incoming (first-pass) and outcoming (second-pass) polarization states were reconstructed and their corresponding modulation transfer functions were calculated. We found that the retinal image or, alternatively, the ocular aberrations, are nearly independent of the state of polarization of the incident light (in the first pass). This means that a significant improvement in the ocular optics by using a specific type of polarized light could not be achieved. However, quite different estimates of the retinal image quality are obtained for combinations of polarization states in both the first and the second passes in the double-pass apparatus.
