Mind the gap: aligning AI with how restaurant staff think
  • Jan 1, 2026
  • International Hospitality Review
  • Joel Reynolds

Purpose This practitioner paper translates peer-reviewed research on restaurant worker mental models into actionable strategies for implementing artificial intelligence (AI)-driven reservation and personalization systems. The paper aims to address the critical disconnect between AI technology capabilities and worker acceptance, which causes 60–70% of hospitality technology implementations to fail despite technical sophistication. Design/methodology/approach Drawing from pathfinder network analysis of 25 restaurant workers’ cognitive structures (Iyer, Reynolds, Nam, & Jeong, 2024), this paper synthesizes findings with current AI hospitality literature to develop a human-centered implementation framework. The mental model alignment matrix evaluates AI features against workers' cognitive frameworks across operational flow, interpersonal dynamics and risk management dimensions. Findings Restaurant workers organize their understanding through three interconnected domains that determine technology acceptance. Workers evaluate AI systems based on their impact on the rhythm of service. Furthermore, they perceive technology that reduces human interaction as a threat to their core professional identity and incorporate these new systems into complex risk calculations that extend beyond efficiency to include reputational and service quality concerns. Practical implications Managers should position AI as intelligence amplifiers rather than automation tools, involve frontline workers in workflow mapping to identify non-disruptive integration points and design training that develops interpretation skills over operational compliance. Implementation requires iterative refinement with genuine worker influence over system evolution and clear accountability frameworks that preserve professional judgment. Originality/value This paper uniquely bridges cognitive psychology and hospitality technology implementation, providing the first framework that aligns AI deployment with worker mental models. The mental model alignment matrix (Borders, Klein, & Besuijen 2024) offers managers a practical tool for prioritizing features and sequencing implementation to maximize adoption success.

Behavioral Finance and Managerial Decision-Making: Integrating Psychology with Modern Business Strategy
  • Dec 31, 2025
  • International Journal for Research in Applied Science and Engineering Technology
  • Dr V R Jayavardhini

Behavioral finance has evolved as a transformative field that bridges cognitive psychology and financial economics, challenging traditional assumptions of rational decision-making in business environments. Modern organizations increasingly recognize that managerial decisions are influenced by heuristics, biases, emotional responses, and social dynamics, all of which significantly affect strategic outcomes. This research paper investigates how behavioral finance principles shape managerial decision-making and how psychological insights can be integrated into business strategy to enhance organizational performance. By reviewing theoretical constructs such as heuristics, prospect theory, overconfidence bias, anchoring, loss aversion, and herd behavior, the study explains why managers deviate from rational models predicted by classical finance. The paper further discusses how behavioral interventions, such as debiasing techniques, nudge strategies, and structured decision frameworks, can strengthen managerial judgment. Case studies from industries including investment management, technology, and banking illustrate practical applications. Ultimately, this paper argues that incorporating behavioral finance into strategic management not only improves forecasting accuracy and risk assessment but also cultivates adaptive leadership capable of navigating uncertainty in dynamic markets.

  • Dec 29, 2025
  • Journal of the University of Ruhuna
  • Yang Yang

Text world theory, which is developed on the basis of cognitive linguistics and cognitive psychology, has attracted extensive attention in the fields of linguistics, literature and so on. This study makes a systematic review of the theoretical and empirical studies on text world theory, so as to analyse the current development of text world theory, establish the gaps and provides implications for further research. It can be found that materials involved in the application study of text world theory mainly include novels, poems, plays, films, news discourses and oral dialogues. Text world theory is also applied to the fields like writing and language teaching. As the theoretical framework of text world theory has continually been improving and its application scope been broadening, this study proposes the following suggestions for future studies. As for the theoretical study, it needs to further refine and revise its theoretical framework, and integrate other theories to consolidate its theoretical basis; as for the application study, it needs to expand the scope of the research material, solve the problems of unbalanced research objects and lack of empirical studies. Considering its prominent academic significance in discourse analysis and other related fields, more attention should be paid on the study of text world theory.

Aportes de la neurociencia cognitiva al desarrollo de la lectura, la escritura y la atención escolar
  • Dec 26, 2025
  • Star of Sciences Multidisciplinary Journal
  • Erika Sofía Segovia Arturo + 3 more

Neuroeducation is a field that combines cognitive neuroscience, psychology, and pedagogy to explain how the brain learns and why this is important for teaching. This article explores neuroscientific viewpoints on the acquisition of reading and writing, neuroplasticity and emotion, neurodidactic approaches, play, and gamification. Recent studies show that reading and writing stimulate different areas of the brain and that learning through the senses helps with memory and understanding. Neuroplasticity posits that experiences mold the brain and that emotions facilitate deep learning. Research indicates that active methodologies, spaced repetition, and free recall are effective in enhancing attention and memory. Finally, play and gamification activate dopaminergic circuits, enhancing motivation, creativity, and the retention of knowledge. Neuroeducation provides scientific evidence to improve teaching methods, making them more compassionate, inclusive, and emotionally intelligent. Neuroeducation acknowledges that learning involves cognitive, biological, and emotional aspects, with emotion, motivation, and brain plasticity forming the basis of profound and lasting learning.

Quantum Cognition Models for Decision-Making Under Uncertainty
  • Dec 25, 2025
  • Human Computer Interaction
  • Ada Öztürkmen

Classical models of decision-making under uncertainty, grounded in expected utility theory and Bayesian probability, often fail to account for systematic cognitive anomalies such as preference reversals, order effects, ambiguity aversion, and context-dependent choices. Quantum cognition models offer a novel theoretical framework that applies the mathematical principles of quantum probability—such as superposition, interference, and non-commutativity—to cognitive processes without assuming physical quantum mechanisms in the brain. By representing cognitive states as probabilistic superpositions that collapse through decision “measurements,” these models provide parsimonious explanations for violations of classical rationality. This paper examines how quantum cognition frameworks capture contextual influence, belief updating, and interference effects in uncertain decision environments. Drawing on findings from cognitive psychology and behavioral economics, the study highlights the relevance of quantum cognition for applications in economic choice modeling, legal decision analysis, and artificial intelligence. The analysis suggests that quantum probability offers a robust alternative to classical approaches when modeling human decision-making in complex, ambiguous, and context-sensitive situations.

The Power of Pure Silence for Altering Individual Mental Models: A Paradigm Shift in Organizational Behavior for Dynamic Environments
  • Dec 23, 2025
  • Organizational Psychology Review
  • Manisha Badetia + 1 more

In dynamic environments, the necessity to adapt mental models that no longer serve their purpose is paramount as these models guide individual behaviors. This article aims to elucidate how engaging in Pure Silence can influence and alter mental models with implications for organizational functioning. The formulation and operationalization of mental models have been central to analyzing intersections between industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology and cognitive psychology. The theoretical framework described and the proposed conceptual model can help organizational psychology researchers and professionals to understand how mental models can be altered to foster effective organizational behavior. The model integrates (a) Pure Silence, (b) meditation, (c) mindfulness, (d) mental models which guide individual behaviors and (e) organizational climate. By drawing insights from mindfulness theory and social learning theory, this article explores mechanisms underlying effective organizational behavior.

Psycho-visual Mechanisms of Perception Control by Means of Graphic Design in Conditions of Information Overload
  • Dec 23, 2025
  • Demiurge: Ideas, Technologies, Perspectives of Design
  • Viacheslav Borysov + 1 more

The purpose of the study is to identify, systematise and critically analyse the psycho-visual mechanisms used in contemporary graphic design to manage perception in conditions of information overload. Research methodology. An interdisciplinary approach was used, combining the principles of cognitive psychology, neuroaesthetics, Gestalt theory and design analytics. The primary research methods include: critical visual analysis, cognitive-perceptual interpretation, philosophical conceptualisation of visual experience, and content analysis of examples of visual communication in conditions of information saturation. Scientific novelty. The article offers an interdisciplinary analysis of psycho-visual mechanisms for managing perception through graphic design in conditions of information overload, examining the intersection of cognitive aesthetics and visual semiotics. The application of psycho-visual consistency as a factor in effective communication in overloaded conditions is clarified. A typology of cognitive functions of forms is proposed, which allows visual elements to be considered as carriers of perceptual influence. Psycho-visual mechanisms of perception control, facilitated by graphic design, are generalised in conditions of information overload. The results are of practical importance for the design of visual communications, can be used as analytical tools in the creation of visual strategies, and can be incorporated into the training of future graphic designers. Conclusions. Research into the psycho-visual mechanisms of perception control through graphic design confirms their leading role in structuring visual information in conditions of information overload. It is essential to focus not on visual complexity, but on the informativeness and controllability of attention, which provide grounds for creating adaptive and intuitive design solutions. The graphic designer acts as an intermediary between complex information flows and the user’s cognitive abilities, while graphic design performs regulatory and meaning-making functions. The effectiveness of graphic design depends on the graphic designer’s ability to apply Gestalt principles, visual accents, rhythm, and compositional balance, which ensure cognitive economy and facilitate perception.

  • Александр Владимирович Шувалов

The article examines the scientific contribution of the authoritative domestic psychologist, founder of the Moscow Scientific School of Christian Psychology, Boris Sergeevich Bratus, in substantiating the possibility of Christian-oriented psychology. As part of the historical analysis of the emergence and development of psychology as a scientific discipline, the main types of psychological knowledge are highlighted. Both achievements and omissions in the formation of a system of rational psychological knowledge are critically comprehended. Promising directions for the development of modern domestic psychology are proposed: humanitarian psychology, moral psychology and Christian psychology. In the second part of the article, options for the development of Bratus’s ideas are proposed. Sections of Orthodox theology are identified, in conjunction with which psychology gains the opportunity to actually become Christian-oriented — these are Orthodox dogmatics, Orthodox anthropology and Orthodox asceticism. The necessity of a terminological transition to the use of the definitions “Orthodox psychology” and “patristic psychology” is substantiated. An integrative scheme of Orthodox psychology has been developed. The main aspects of Orthodox psychology are identified: axiomatics based on Orthodox dogmatics; theory based on Orthodox anthropology; applied and practical applications based on Orthodox asceticism.

Young Australian Women's Views on Peer Support for Self-Harm: A Qualitative Study.
  • Dec 17, 2025
  • International journal of environmental research and public health
  • Amy Wang + 8 more

Self-harm among young women has been rising internationally and in Australia, yet many are not in contact with formal services. Peer support may play an important role in managing self-harm; however, it remains under-investigated. This qualitative study explored how young Australian women perceive peer support for managing self-harm. Using purposive sampling, twenty-seven women (M = 20.9, SD = 2.1) with lived or living experiences of self-harm participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Five themes highlighted perceived benefits and risks of peer support: 1. Affirmation-peer support offers understanding and validation that reduce shame and stigma; 2. Connection to community-shared experience reduces isolation and supports learning; 3. Empowerment-peer support promotes hope, autonomy, and help-seeking; 4. Capacity matters-limited psychological knowledge and emotional resources can constrain or burden peers; 5. Perception can be distorted-in un-moderated online contexts, normalisation, glamorisation, and competitive dynamics of self-harm may increase risk. These findings offer insight into how young women understand the different aspects of peer support for self-harm and may inform the development of structured and moderated peer support options. Future research should focus on the design and evaluation of safe and effective peer support initiatives.

  • Dec 2, 2025
  • Scientific Reports
  • Yueyue Weng + 1 more

This study proposes a comprehensive framework for evaluating and optimizing laboratory warning sign systems, grounded in the principles of visual communication design, cognitive psychology, and safety management. A mixed-methods experimental design involving 120 participants was employed, integrating eye-tracking analysis, comprehension and memory assessments, and behavioral response evaluations. The results identified key factors contributing to the effectiveness of warning signs, including color contrast ratio, symbol standardization, and information hierarchy. A validated optimization procedure was developed, emphasizing visual detectability, information organization, and contextual relevance. It led to significant improvements in attention capture (35.9%), hazard detection accuracy (42.3%), and procedural compliance (37.8%). Evidence-based design specifications for laboratory warning signs were established to balance standardization requirements with the need for contextual adaptation across diverse laboratory environments. These specifications were further validated through a case study conducted at Fujian University of Technology, demonstrating the effective translation of theoretical frameworks into enhanced safety communication practices.

Scientific Impact on Socially Beneficial Behaviors: Impact and Efficiency Evidence From Behavior Change Interventions
  • Dec 1, 2025
  • Social and Personality Psychology Compass
  • Dolores Albarracin

ABSTRACT Psychology and related fields have developed a science of behavior change that supports interventions in various areas, including health, sustainability, and education. This review assesses the contributions of each discipline to the performance (i.e., efficacy) and efficiency (i.e., cost‐effectiveness) of these interventions. We analyzed published experimental studies targeting 16 intervention targets, including knowledge, beliefs, social norms, social support, access, and habits. For each target, we estimated its prevalence in the literature, its efficacy in changing behavior, and its cost‐effectiveness in improving outcomes. We then used GPT to assess the degree to which 14 academic disciplines (e.g., social psychology, psychology, communication, economics, and engineering) are linked to each target, based on their centrality to conceptualizing and measuring it. These disciplinary ratings were combined with target efficacy and cost‐effectiveness to estimate each discipline's overall contribution to behavioral change. Psychology, including social and cognitive psychology, made the largest contribution to efficacious interventions, followed by communication, public health, and medicine. Economics and neuroscience were associated with the most cost‐effective interventions, although all disciplines fell significantly below a common benchmark for cost‐effectiveness in the health sector (i.e., $50,000 QALY). Despite its efficacy and cost‐effectiveness, psychology receives relatively limited federal funding compared to other disciplines.

Becoming a trusted data analytics adviser instead of a report writer
  • Dec 1, 2025
  • Applied Marketing Analytics: The Peer-Reviewed Journal
  • Jim Sterne

Marketing analytics has transformed analysts from report producers into strategic advisers, yet many organisations keep them occupied on the hamster wheel of ad hoc reporting. This paper examines the critical shift required for analysts to move beyond dashboard delivery and toward trusted advisory roles that influence business outcomes. Being a mere report and dashboard generator runs the risks of overproduction, cognitive overload and stakeholder disengagement when data are presented without interpretation or context. Drawing on concepts from data storytelling, analytics adoption and cognitive psychology, the paper discusses how analysts can reduce information fatigue, build credibility and foster decision confidence through narrative communication. Storytelling integrates semantic precision, rhetorical persuasion and pragmatic relevance, enabling analysts to translate complex signals into actionable recommendations. Further, the role of the ‘analytics translator’ is explored as a bridge between technical teams and business leaders, emphasising the necessity of domain knowledge, communication skills and contextual framing. Barriers to adoption are addressed through a staged maturity model, showing how challenges such as inconsistent data definitions, cultural resistance and organisational silos evolve as analytics functions mature from reactive reporting to strategic influence. Practical steps are offered for reframing analytics as a process rather than a means of report production. The goal is to align with stakeholder incentives and demonstrate value through outcome-focused communication. The paper concludes that generative artificial intelligence will accelerate the automation of reporting, raising the bar for human analysts. To remain indispensable, practitioners must embrace roles as translators, storytellers and advisers who bring empathy, business literacy and contextual insight to data interpretation. Ultimately, the trusted data adviser is defined not by the volume of dashboards delivered but by the quality of decisions influenced. This article is also included in The Business & Management Collection which can be accessed at https://hstalks.com/business/.

Experimental Interrogations: Tatbestandsdiagnostik, Objectivity, and the Impact of Experimental Psychology on Early-Twentieth-Century Criminal Justice.
  • Dec 1, 2025
  • NTM
  • Elwin Hofman

In 1904, Max Wertheimer and Julius Klein published apaper that shook the worlds of criminal justice and psychology. They proposed using psychological experiments, particularly word association tests, to assess whether criminal suspects had committed aparticular crime. Over the following months and years, almost every German-language journal on psychology or criminal law, as well as many foreign-language journals, published something on this so-called Tatbestandsdiagnostik. Some hailed it as the "criminal investigation of the future." However, Tatbestandsdiagnostik's downfall was as swift as its rise to fame. By the advent of World WarI, most psychologists and jurists had concluded that the association method was of no use in legal and police practice. This article traces the history of Tatbestandsdiagnostik as acase of how new forms of psychological knowledge circulated, were evaluated, and made an impact. It argues that proponents' insistence on the method's objectivity, its ambiguous relationship with psychoanalysis, and the possibility of demonstrating it to students and colleagues facilitated both its rapid rise and its demise.
