Sevillian satirical magazines in the first third of the 20th century and their cartoonists

In this work we intend to make a compilation of the names of the satirical magazines that appeared in the city of Seville from 1900 until the last years of the Second Republic, together with their cartoonists, providing new headlines as a basis for the bibliography of the press already existing in Seville. It would also be a continuation of the search for local satirical magazines of the 19th century and the cartoonists of the same that we already started in previous years. In addition, we develop some of them, giving information on their physical location and highlighting some notes about their staff, motivation and informative content, highlighting their way of seeing some day-to-day events in the city and others related to the history of Seville itself and that of its characters. Another aspect that we consider of great value are those related to freedom of expression, such as the crimes of defamation and against honor, such as those that occurred with the Don Próspero magazines in 1902 and with the publication of en 1930, junto a unas notas sobre el secuestro de la edición Sevilla en Broma del columnista y periodista de sucesos Galerín en 1926.

Pedalling with Lefebvre along the bike-lanes of Seville: why we should not assume that public infrastructures necessarily restrict the right to the city

The notion —clearly inspired by Lefebvre— according to which public works have per se a coercive character that curtails the inhabitants’ right to the city, should not be applied when evaluating certain infrastructures which actually improve the livability of the urban space, such as those promoting urban cycling. Considering this possible error, it is necessary to examine the repeated exceptions that Lefebvre himself enunciates throughout his work when he characterizes some types of urban intervention that, when fulfilling certain conditions, contribute to the resignification and reappropiation of urban space. We here pursue not only to enumerate these notes by Lefebvre, but to illustrate them taking as a model an urban intervention of great repercussion such as the infrastructure for the promotion of urban cycling in the city of Seville in the first decade of the 21st century, and applying such Lefebvrian contributions to its characteristics. In the confrontation of the different space-producing strategies, some infrastructures —such as the one addressed in this case study— guarantee the right to the city, instead of being, as could be argued from a superficial reading of Lefebvre’s analysis, an element that restricts that right.

Migration from residential use of housing to tourist rental in Seville. Impacts on the right to live in the city

The analysis of the impacts on residential housing in the city of Seville by tourist rental has been the main objective that has guided the carrying out of this work. To achieve this the behavior of the rental of housing for tourist purposes, the evolution of the rental cost and the prices of the houses were characterized. The effects of tourist rental experienced by Sevillian residents were also examined. Organized resistance against the impact of intensive tourism in Seville is recent. The Collective Assembly against the Touristization of Seville (CACTUS) began to take its first steps a few years ago. Its members consider that the migration from residential to tourist-type rental not only expels the resident population, but that with the emptying of the neighborhoods, the solidarity networks that have been typical of Sevillian neighborhoods also disappear.

Valuation Models for Holiday Rentals’ Daily Rates: Price Composition Based on Booking.com

In recent years, the number of sharing economy accommodations has grown exponentially due to the Internet and peer-to-peer networks, which has made researchers increasingly interested in analysing this new type of lodging. This study sought to develop models that determine the significant variables for the daily price of staying in holiday rentals based on data extracted from Booking.com and other sources. The hedonic pricing method (HPM) was selected to conduct the research as this methodology has been widely used in real estate valuation and hotel daily rate determination; however, the HPM is still rarely used for holiday rentals. The study focused on the city of Seville, where a notable increase in holiday rentals has been observed in recent years. Variables related to the accommodation typology, including location, size and equipment, as well as seasonality, are the most influential factors in the proposed models. These results are of interest to both owners and users of holiday rentals and can help these individuals to determine if the price of a stay is what would commonly be offered in the market under normal circumstances.

Contribution to the analysis of the impact of the creation of a network of cycle-paths in the local economy and in the touristic image of cities. The case of Seville

This paper analyzes the impact of the creation of a continuous network of segregated cycle paths on local economy and on the touristic image of cities, through the case study of the city of Seville by developing a methodology that could be applied to the analysis of other similar experiences. The implementation of a network of bike tracks in the city from 2007 onwards led to the revitalization of a sector, quite marginal until that date, turning it into a dynamic and growing sector in an environment of economic crisis, with high job creation rates per euro billed, something quite beneficial in a city with high rates of unemployment. The impact of the creation of the mentioned network of cycle paths in the touristic image of the city, something very important given the relevance of the tourism in its economy, is apparent from the inclusion of the aforementioned infrastructure in the main international tourist guides of the city. The microanalysis of the opinions of the visitors, users of said infrastructure, evidences a positive valuation, and its high multiplier power as an argument for recommending Seville as a tourist destination in their immediate social environments. However, some deficiencies that should still be corrected are detected, such as conservation problems, or the low level of knowledge of such infrastructure at the international level.

Improving School Transition Spaces Microclimate to Make Them Liveable in Warm Climates

The so-called urban heat islands (UHI) is a thermal phenomenon characterized by higher air temperatures in the urban area than in rural surroundings. Vernacular passive strategies such as courtyards are proved to be useful to generate specific microclimates, especially in the warmer regions of the Earth. Courtyards increase the porosity of the cities, understanding porosity as building voids. Accordingly, their study will be fundamental in reducing the UHI effect by generating urban cooling microislands. This paper aims to analyze two passive strategies capable of modifying the thermal effect of radiation inside the courtyard of two school buildings: albedo and vegetation. In this regard, two case studies were assessed, both of them located in the city of Seville. Results show that the temperature in these spaces can vary up to 7 °C depending on the albedo, which confirms the importance of detecting an optimal albedo factor. In addition, data showed a significant increase in the thermal delta (TD), courtyard versus outdoor temperature, after the installation of a vegetal facade. Accordingly, both strategies will be fundamental in locations affected by climate change, especially considering that they are not only effective cooling strategies but also relatively easy to implement in the building’s refurbishment process.

Towards a Circular Economy for the City of Seville: The Method for Developing a Guide for a More Sustainable Architecture and Urbanism (GAUS)

The article outlines the creation of a method for the development of tools to incorporate sustainability criteria in the field of architectural design. The aim of the research is to provide society with scientific knowledge related to sustainability, evaluating the environmental impact of their actions within the building sector, in a simple and direct manner through specific and contextualised tools. A specific tool is experimentally developed for the context of Seville, called Guide for a more Sustainable Architecture and Urbanism (GAUS), in its first document, GAUS-D1. Based on national and international documentary references, the method principles are defined, and an approach is adopted that prioritises communicative actions with the aim of reaching citizens, professionals, and researchers in the building sector. The specific experiment is developed with GAUS-D1, and an initial evaluation is made of its suitability and the validity of the proposed method. The approach followed ensures that the experience of developing this type of tool is internationally transferable to any other place. Further statistical verification of the use of the tool (which implies a defined testing strategy) is necessary so that the method can be consolidated as a national and international reference.

La carnicera judía Ana Gonçales en el contexto de la Sevilla bajomedieval

Durante décadas, la historiografía ha dedicado numerosos esfuerzos para visibilizar el papel histórico de la mujer en diferentes situaciones y actividades. Siguiendo esa línea, en esta ocasión, se presenta el caso de la carnicera Ana Gonçales, a partir de una carta de merced del oficio de la carnicería emitido por los Reyes Católicos en favor de una mujer judía de la aljama de Sevilla, y el posterior conflicto con los judíos de dicho lugar. Previamente realizaremos una contextualización del caso en la ciudad de Sevilla y la aljama de esa ciudad, prestando atención al comercio de la carne.

The city of Seville was characterized by fervent animosity in its religious manifestations. Fe and pomposity were confused in the religious festivals and it was what characterized her, coming to rival the institutions among themselves to do the most recognized in Seville capital. The need to make their religiosity felt in the community made the city get accustomed to a notorious public religious manifestation that contrasted with the manifestations of other places, especially those of the north of the Iberian Peninsula

A Relação Público-Privado na Gestão de Instalações Esportivas na Espanha

Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo analisar o processo de implementação de instalações esportivas na Espanha, com um olhar mais aprofundado sobre as instalações públicas de esporte de Sevilha, tendo por base a relação público-privado na gestão daquelas. O estudo foi desenvolvido a partir de uma pesquisa documental e teórica em autores espanhóis, tendo um caráter quantitativo e qualitativo. Foi possível perceber que houve diminuição do crescimento da construção de instalações esportivas na Espanha, tendo ocorrido uma descentralização da gestão em direção a administração local e as empresas privadas. No âmbito da cidade de Sevilha identificamos que não houve crescimento da quantidade de instalações esportivas, sendo que os diferentes modelos de gestão (direta, social e privada) apresentam instalações, atividades e sociabilidades diferentes.

Condicionantes sociolingüísticos en la expresión del sujeto pronominal en el corpus PRESEEA-Sevilla: el sociolecto alto

Este trabajo se propone analizar la variable presencia / ausencia del pronombre personal sujeto junto a un verbo conjugado en el español hablado de la comunidad urbana de Sevilla. En concreto, intentamos establecer cuáles son los factores internos y externos que determinan el empleo del sujeto pronominal en una muestra de 24 entrevistas semidirigidas correspondientes al sociolecto alto y que forman del corpus PRESEEA en la ciudad. Para ello, seguimos la guía de codificación propuesta por Bentivoglio, Ortiz y Silva-Corvalán (2011) para el proyecto panhispánico PRESEEA. Los resultados muestran que el pronombre sujeto se utiliza un 24,8%, y parece estar condicionado, entre otros, por criterios como persona gramatical, especificidad, ambigüedad de la forma verbal, clase semántica del verbo, correfencialidad, edad, etc. This study aims to analysis the variable presence/absence of the personal pronoun subject with a conjugated verb in Spanish language spoken in the city of Seville. Specifically, we try to stablish which internal or external factors are involved in the pronominal subject use in a sample of 24 semi-controlled interviews corresponding to the high sociolect and taken from the PRESEEA-Seville corpus. For this, we base our analysis on the coding guidelines proposed by Bentivoglio, Ortiz and Silva-Corvalán (2011) for the PRESEEA panhispanic project. The results show that the subject pronoun is used in 24,8% and it is conditioned by different criteria, such as grammatical person, specificity, ambiguity of the verbal form, semantic class of the verb, co-reference or age.

Worlds Within Worlds: The Institutional Locations of Global Connections in Early-Modern Seville

This article examines the institutional locations of global connections in Seville as the city became an important hub of Europe’s first global empire in the sixteenth century. It combines a micro-historical approach to institutions with the history of religious orders to explore the places and processes through which global connections were localized and mediated in sixteenth-century Seville. While the role of economic institutions, such as the Casa de Contratacion (House of Trade), in processing long-range connections is well known, the role of religious institutions has often been overlooked. This article uses original archival research for the regional headquarters of the Franciscan Order, the Casa Grande, and its affiliated confraternity, the cofradia de la Vera Cruz, to examine the roles played by religious institution in the business of negotiating connections across the Mediterranean and Atlantic and within the city of Seville. This micro-historical study reveals these institutions as microcosms of the newly emerging global society of the Iberian world. This approach highlights the entanglement of religion and economics in the business of negotiating global connections and draws attention to the lives of people often left out of global histories.

The “qanats” of the Los Alcores aquifer and the traditional water supply system to Seville

Due to the quality and the topographic position of its waters, the Los Alcores aquifer has been the main supply of running and drinking water for the city of Seville for many centuries. In the first century, a complex water supply system, of more than 17 km in length, was built to withdraw groundwaters in the southern part of the aquifer and whose main elements were an extensive network of “qanats”, a surface conduction and a reservoir in the city (castellum aquae). After the abandonment of this infrastructure, the surface conduction was reconstructed in the 12th century (known as Caños de Carmona), which was made up of a canal and, in the part closest to the city, by a brick aqueduct over arches. Since the end of the 19th century, the urban, industrial and the transport network development and the conduction of water from the reservoirs of the Sierra Morena produced, once again, the progressive abandonment and destruction of these infrastructures. However, a large part of the “qanat” network excavated in the Los Alcores aquifer has been preserved and recently the GEOS and AAES speleological groups have explored about 20 km of water mines. The characteristics of tunnels and vertical shafts, the construction techniques, the discovery of Roman mortar (opus signinum) and bricks (opus testaceum) and the Arab chronicles suggest that this network of “qanats” was made mainly during the Roman domination period.

SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE LANGUAGE OF THE MUDEJARS OF SEVILLE

El presente artículo intenta reconstruir la historia lingüística de la ciudad de Sevilla y su zona de influencia después de la Reconquista. En el siglo XIII, en la Andalucía del Guadalquivir, se produce una ruptura política, social y cultural. Se cierra la etapa andalusí en la historia de Sevilla y se inicia la etapa castellana. ¿Cómo vivió este cambio la población autóctona? ¿En qué condiciones se produjo el encuentro entre las dos comunidades lingüísticas: los arabófonos y los romanceparlantes? ¿Cuál fue el destino de los mudéjares y de la lengua árabe en Andalucía? Estas son algunas de las preguntas, cuya respuesta intentaremos encontrar en las páginas que siguen.

Determinants of fuel prices: dominant firms, local monopolies and ‘captive’ demand

ABSTRACT This paper analyses the effect on retail fuel prices of factors such as belonging to dominant firms, the position of a local monopoly or oligopoly, and service station location. We study the effect of belonging to the dominant firms in the market, Repsol and Cepsa, of enjoying a local natural monopoly or oligopoly in rural areas, and of being located in places with captive demand, such as highways and motorways, as well as in the city centre. We apply this study to service stations in the province of Seville (Spain). The main findings are that the two main distributors, Repsol and Cepsa, set a higher price. We also find market power at a local level, which appears through monopoly or duopolies in rural areas, and which also results in higher prices, albeit to a much lesser degree. In addition, we see that stations servicing users on high-capacity roads as well as stations located in Seville city centre also set higher prices.

De Sevilla a Madrid: el redescubrimiento del <em>Libro blanco</em> y el <em>Tumbo de la ciudad</em> en el Siglo de Oro

En este estudio se reconstruye el itinerario vital de dos volúmenes confeccionados en época medieval en la ciudad de Sevilla, el Libro Blanco de la catedral y el Tumbo del concejo, llamando la atención sobre el fenómeno cultural que representan en el cambio de la concepción que del cartulario se va teniendo a lo largo del tiempo. Códices que nacieron con una clara función y que, poco después, dejan de ser herramientas al servicio de sus instituciones para convertirse en objetos de lujo, sometidos a la compraventa, al mismo tiempo que fuentes para hacer historia, aun cuando sus textos seguían siendo vinculantes desde un punto de vista jurídico. Estos libros irán pasando de mano en mano, a través de algunos de los personajes más destacados del mundo de la cultura y la política del Siglo de Oro y el Siglo de las Luces españoles.

Valuing Households’ Willingness to Pay for Water Transfers from the Irrigation Sector: A Case Study of the City of Seville (Southern Spain)

Water scarcity is increasing in many countries worldwide, and conflicts between alternative uses have arisen due to the high demand and the effects of climate change, among other factors. This paper employs a contingent valuation (CV) method to determine households’ willingness to pay (WTP) compensation to the irrigation sector to guarantee urban supply reliability under extreme water-scarcity conditions (e.g., during a drought period) through inter-sectoral water transfers. The data was obtained from a survey covering 250 households in the city of Seville. In order to estimate households’ WTP, a double-bounded approach is used. Results show that the average WTP would be between 2.53 and 2.59 euros (on a monthly basis), which would represent a viable annual water transfer of 14.3 Hm3 from the irrigation sector, which would be compensated accordingly. This study shows that inter-sectoral water transfers should be considered a viable adaptation measure to manage the consequences of water scarcity in urban areas.

Discriminación, apoyo social y bienestar psicológico en personas con trastornos mentales

En esta investigación se estudian los discursos y prácticas relacionados con la salud mental en la ciudad de Sevilla observando la influencia de estos sobre el bienestar psicológico de sujetos con trastornos bipolar y depresión. No sólo se trata de visibilizar un fenómeno de gran importancia de cara al futuro sanitario, sino que se hace desde una perspectiva diferente, una perspectiva social. Frente a enfoques hegemónicamente biologicistas en el abordaje de la salud, la visión de las ciencias sociales puede enriquecer notablemente el conocimiento respecto al tema tratado, generando oportunidades difíciles de ver desde otras posiciones.
 Se emplea una metodología cualitativa que pone en evidencia la variabilidad discursiva de cara al fenómeno estudiado, así como la influencia positiva del apoyo social sobre el bienestar psicológico de sujetos con trastornos mentales.

Relevance of Social, Economic, and Environmental Impacts on Residents’ Satisfaction with the Public Administration of Tourism

Those in charge of tourism destinations face the need to create tourism development models compatible with the essence of the localities that they manage. These models have to be sustainable, both environmentally and socially, and also must become drivers of the local economy. However, tourists also generate negative impacts in the locality which, when they are perceived by the residents, can give rise to a rejection of visitors. Hence, improving the tourism management is necessary. This is why to know the residents’ perceptions about the impacts of tourism is essential. Moreover, measuring the impact effects on their satisfaction with the public administration of the destination can be of great usefulness. This study falls into this research line, as it proposes a model to measure these impacts and their effect on satisfaction. To do so, an empirical study is performed among residents in the city of Seville (southern Spain, one of the most visited destinations in the world), based on subjective economic, social, and environmental indicators. The results show that the citizens value three types of impacts, the social impact coming after the economic impact as to its influence on their satisfaction with the administration. Based on this, we postulate that the efforts made to attract events to the city, or to improve connections to access a broader market, must be approached as public procurements in which selection criteria that are compatible with the destination’s positioning and strategy prevail. Social and environmental criteria should be considered among these criteria.

Energy poverty goes south? Understanding the costs of energy poverty with the index of vulnerable homes in Spain

In southern European countries, despite having mild winters, many people live in cold and energy-inefficient properties and struggle to meet their energy needs for comfort and warmth, and therefore they run the risk of developing cold-related illnesses. Although the relationship between health, energy poverty, and cold/warm homes has been analysed by numerous studies, the identification of the direct impact of this relationship on society remains elusive in these countries. This paper shows a case study in a working-class district of Seville, Spain. Six multi-family residential buildings (providing social housing for a total of seventy-one households), built prior to energy-efficiency regulations being in place, are retrofitted by Seville City Council. The Index of Vulnerable Homes, defined by the authors, assesses the vulnerability to energy poverty (pre- and post-intervention) of those households. Furthermore, the costs to the National Health Service (NHS) are also estimated. The results show that savings for the NHS could be used in order to define the payback period of those retrofitting funds. In conclusion, this paper presents how the Index of Vulnerable Homes would be able to help in the development of a comprehensive and coordinated strategy in social housing to address energy poverty, and in the monitoring of the effectiveness of ongoing projects in the city of Seville.
