ABSTRACT The soil urostylid ciliate Paragastrostyla terricola, isolated from northern China, was studied for its morphology and morphogenesis using live observation and protargol impregnation. The main ontogenetic features of P. terricola are as follows: (a) in the proter, the anterior portion of the parental adoral zone of membranelles is retained, while only the posterior part is renewed; undulating membranes anlage undergo, like most hypotrichs, depolymerisation of old undulating membranes and differentiation of new structures; (b) usually eight frontoventral cirral anlagen are formed, the penultimate anlage produces the midventral row and the rightmost anlage produces three frontoterminal cirri; (c) marginal and dorsal kineties anlagen are formed intrakinetally; one caudal cirrus is formed at the posterior end of each dorsal kinety; (d) the macronuclear nodules fuse into a single mass during the process. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:A150EE18-03BF-46B4-9E5B-48273FBA2CFF
