A new Cinygmula McDunnough, 1933 species with distinct imaginal frontal fold from eastern Chinese Himalaya (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae).

In the family Heptageniidae (Ephemeroptera), Cinygmula hutchinsoni (Traver, 1939) from central Asia is the only species known to possess pointed claws and a distinct frontal fold. Here, a second similar species with the same combination of characters is described. Cinygmula longissima sp. nov. is found in the eastern Himalaya of China, shows stouter imaginal penes, darker wingbases, and narrower nymphal gills than the previous one. This discovery indicates that this species of Heptageniidae are not limited to central Asia but live in high-altitude alpine habitats.

Interannual flow dynamics driven by frontal retreat of a lake-terminating glacier in the Chinese Central Himalaya

Most lake-terminating glaciers in the Himalaya retreat rapidly due to periodic frontal ice loss at their terminus, but long-term observations are still limited regarding their flow dynamics, which is crucial for understanding the processes of ice mass loss and proglacial lake growth. We present multi-decadal surface velocity dynamics of the Longbasaba Glacier, a rapid retreating lake-terminating glacier in the Chinese Himalaya, using an image feature tracking method applied on optical satellite images between 1989 and 2018. We show that, in companion with rapid retreat (−51.7 m a−1), its lower 5 km tongue experienced high interannual fluctuations in velocity, comprising periodic acceleration and slowdown in 1989-1995 and 2001-2010 and a recent remarkable acceleration since 2012. The temporal variation of longitudinal velocity distribution indicates an upward propagation of the lake-ward acceleration (namely a downglacier inversion of strain from compression to extension). This propagation is coupled to the retreat of the glacier front and occurs along the lowermost 1∼1.5 km lake-adjacent section as the proglacial lake expands. The most recent acceleration of the near-lake section since 2012 has likely facilitated a dynamic thinning on its upper sections, where flow acceleration started two years later in 2014. This pattern contrasts markedly with a nearby decelerating land-terminating glacier, which has experienced a much slower retreat rate (−7.8 m a−1) and the same magnitude of mean thinning rate at its lower part since 2000. Our results confirm the strong influence of the proglacial lake on ice flow dynamics and suggest that lake-ice interactions are important to consider when analyzing, interpreting or modeling dynamics of rapidly retreating lake-terminating glaciers in the Himalayas as well as around the world.

A review of Himalcercyon stat. nov., with description of a new species from the Chinese Himalaya and an updated key to Asian genera of Megasternini (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae)

HimalcercyonHebauer, 2002stat. nov.is elevated to genus rank based on the unique form of its mesoventral elevation. The genus is reviewed, redescribed, and illustrated in detail. Two species are recognized:Himalcercyon mirus(Hebauer, 2002)comb. nov.from Nepal andH. franzisp. nov.from Chinese Himalaya (Xizang Autonomous Region). Both species are illustrated and diagnosed. An updated key to the Asian genera of the tribe Megasternini (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae, Sphaeridiinae) is provided, along with the SEM micrographs of ventral morphology of these genera. New replacement nameOreosternumnom. nov.is proposed forOreocyonHebauer, 2002 which is preoccupied byOreocyonMarsh, 1872 (Mammalia, Oxyenidae) andOreocyonKrumbiegel, 1949 (Mammalia, Canidae).

A new species of Laccobius Erichson, 1837 (Hydrophilidae, Coleoptera) from the Chinese Himalaya, with comments on taxonomic status of subgenera Glyptolaccobius Gentili, 1989 and Cyclolaccobius Gentili, 1991 and additional faunistic records from China.

A new species of the water scavenger beetle, Laccobius (Glyptolaccobius) motuoensissp. nov., is described from Motuo County, Xizang, China and its diagnostic characters are illustrated. Examination of this new species and re-examination of previously described species revealed that the separation of the subgenus Glyptolaccobius Gentili, 1989 and Cyclolaccobius Gentili, 1991 is artificial: both subgenera are hence combined here. Cyclolaccobiussyn. nov. is synonymized with Glyptolaccobius, and the latter is shown to be diagnosed by 7-segmented antennae as a unique synapomorphy. All species treated until now under Cyclolaccobius are here transferred to Glyptolaccobius, with the only exception of L. hingstoni Orchymont, 1926, L. jumlanus Gentili, 2015 and L. zugmayeri Knisch, 1910 which are tentatively transferred to the subgenus Hydroxenus Wollaston, 1867, as their antennae bear eight antennomeres. Three species are recorded for the first time from China: L. (Microlaccobius) orientalis Knisch, 1924 from Xizang, Laccobius (M.) exilis Gentili,1974 from Xinjiang, and Laccobius (M.) sublaevis J. Sahlberg, 1900 from Xinjiang. Additional faunistic data from China are provided for the following species: L. (Microlaccobius) hammondi Gentili, 1984, Laccobius (M.) formosus Gentili, 1979, Laccobius (Hydroxenus) hingstoni d’Orchymont, 1926, Laccobius (Glyptolaccobius) yunnanensis Gentili, 2003, Laccobius (Compsolaccobius) decorus (Gyllenhal, 1827), Laccobius (Dimorpholaccobius) bipunctatus (Fabricius, 1775), Laccobius (D.) striatulus (Fabricius, 1775), Laccobius (s. str.) bedeli Sharp, 1884, L. (s. str.) binotatus d’Orchymont, 1934, Laccobius (s. str.) cinereus Motschulsky, 1860, and Laccobius (s. str.) minutus (Linnaeus, 1758).

Evolution and outburst risk analysis of moraine-dammed lakes in the central Chinese Himalaya

The recent evolution and outburst risk of two typical moraine-dammed lakes, Galong and Gangxi, central Chinese Himalaya, are analyzed using topographic maps from 1974 and Landsat satellite imagery acquired in 1988, 2000 and 2014. The datasets show the areas of Galong and Gangxi lakes increasing at rates of 0.45 and 0.34 km2/year during the period 1974–2014, an expansion of 501% and 107%, respectively, in the past 41 years, while the areas of the parent glaciers, Reqiang and Jipucong decreased by 44.22% and 37.76%, respectively. The accelerating retreat of the glaciers not only reflects their generally negative mass balance but is consistent with the rapid expansion of the moraine-dammed lakes. When acted upon by external forces such as earthquakes, heavy rainfall, rapid melting of glaciers and dead ice, and snow/ice/rock avalanches, these lakes can become extremely dangerous, easily forming outburst mudslides, which can potentially spread to the Poiqu river basin and develop into cross-border (China and Nepal) GLOF disasters. Therefore, there is an urgent need to strengthen integrated risk management of glacial lake outburst disasters with multiple objectives and modes.

Moraine-dammed lake distribution and outburst flood risk in the Chinese Himalaya

AbstractTo better understand the risk of disasters due to glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), we synthetically analyze the spatial distribution and evolution of moraine-dammed lakes and potentially dangerous glacial lakes (PDGLs) in the Chinese Himalaya. Our county-based assessment of GLOF disaster risk combines PDGL outburst hazard, regional exposure, vulnerability of exposed elements and adaptation capability (risk management) using the analytic hierarchy process. We synthetically analyze the disaster risk using the weighted comprehensive method. Remote-sensing data show there are 329 moraine-dammed lakes (>0.02 km2; total area 125.43 km2) in the Chinese Himalaya, of which 116 (total area 49.49 km2) are identified as PDGLs. The zones at highest risk of GLOF disaster are mainly located in Nyalam, Tingri, Dinggyê, Lhozhag, Kangmar and Zhongba, in the mid-eastern Himalaya. Lowest-risk zones are located in the eastern Himalaya. On the county scale, Lhozhag and Lhunze have the highest hazard degrees and exposure, while Zhongba and Zando have the highest degree of vulnerability and lowest adaptation capacity. Our regionalization results for GLOF disaster risk are consistent with the distribution of historical disaster sites across the Chinese Himalaya.

Habitat–occupancy associations and tree-species use patterns by breeding birds in Tibetan sacred forests

Himalayan forests are undergoing rapid changes due to population growth and economic development and their associated bird communities are among the most threatened and least-studied on earth. In the Chinese Himalaya, traditionally managed Tibetan sacred forests are keystone structures for forest bird conservation. Yet, it remains unclear which fine-scale habitat characteristics of the sacred forests are best associated with Himalayan forest bird species. Our goal here was to quantify the relationship between forest habitat characteristics and bird communities in Tibetan sacred forests to understand habitat associations of common forest birds in the Chinese Himalaya. In 2010 and 2011, we conducted bird point counts and habitat surveys at 62, 50-m radius, sample points distributed within and adjacent to six Tibetan sacred forests in northwest Yunnan, China. From this data, we constructed habitat–occupancy relationship models for 35 bird species and documented tree-use patterns of 14 common arboreal foraging bird species. Our modeling results revealed that large diameter trees and heterogeneity in vertical vegetation structure were the most important habitat characteristics, and were positively associated with occupancy of 63 % of the study bird species. Furthermore, we found that occupancy of eight bird species of conservation concern was related to specific thresholds of forest integrity characteristics. For example, predicted occupancy of three of eight species was high in forested habitats with >15 % bamboo cover and was greatly reduced when bare ground cover exceeded 5 %. We found that bird species foraged on pine (Pinus densata, 58 % more than it was available) and poplar (Populus davidiana, 41 %) in higher proportion to their availability, but that foraging success was highest on fir (Abies spp.), oak (Quercus spp.), willow (Salix spp.) and Chinese Larch (Larix potaninii). Our findings suggest that, although conservation is not a primary management goal of Tibetan sacred forests, these lands harbor critical habitat features for forest breeding birds of the Chinese Himalaya.

Using Remote Sensing Data to Quantify Changes in Glacial Lakes in the Chinese Himalaya

To assess changes in glacial lakes in the Chinese Himalaya, 2 inventory phases were conducted on the basis of 278 aerial survey topography maps from the 1970s and 38 Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) images from the 2000s. In the past 30 years, the number of glacial lakes has decreased, from 1750 to 1680 (a decrease of 4.0%), whereas the average area of glacial lakes expanded from 166.48 to 215.28 km2 (an increase of 29.7%). Between 3400 and 6000 m, glacial lake areas expanded at rates of 2–84% in almost all 100-m elevation bands, and the dominant expansion rates at different elevations were inversely correlated with glacier area retreating rates to some degree. Glacial lake expansion was a dominant contributor to the increase in glacial lake area, accounting for about 67% of the net changes in lake area, whereas newly formed lakes accounted for the remaining 33%.

Tectonic predesign of mass movements, with examples from the Chinese Himalaya

The genesis of landslides has traditionally been ascribed essentially to exogenic, nontectonic causes. Thus, it has generally been assumed that progressive erosion oversteepens slopes until they become unstable and collapse by forming slides; the specific triggers in each case would be exogenic influences such as, for instance, an extreme weather period. This paper shows that in practically all cases of mass-movements, endogenic processes are also of fundamental importance. In the first place, a landscape responds as a complex open system existing in a quasi-stationary state at the edge of chaos in which an endogenic input and exogenic outflow of mass and energy occur; this quasi-stationary state can become unstable resulting in landslides. In the second place, a direct predesign is present because of endogenic causes, viz. by a former or the present geotectonic stress field. Thus, some common notable contentions regarding the origin of landslides are shown to be false. A better understanding of the mechanisms for landslide genesis is illuminated using examples from the Chinese mountain ranges at the east end of the Himalayas. In these particular cases, the orientations of mass movements are directly controlled (`predesigned') by the present-day local tectonic stress.
