In the interwar period, the Soviet Union experienced an unprecedented attention towards children’s literature. The October revolution was a driving force for all the arts and particularly for the editorial production aimed at forging the ‘new man’, embodied in the present moment by the younger generation. The CPSU increased its investment in all forms of publications – books, magazines, posters – and proposed them for mass production with the scope of educational engineering. Through an analysis of the literary and visual contents of the 1920’s issues of the magazine Murzilka, this paper aims at defining the characteristics of the new man as they appeared on the pages of one of the most popular magazines for children in Soviet Russia.

Latar Belakang penelitian ini adalah banyaknya setiap ajaran baru dari pihak-pihak penerbit akan datang silih berganti untuk menawarkan majalah untuk anak-anak, kebanyak guru memberikan majalah pada anak dalam kegaiantan mengajar, tanpa disadari guru mengikuti keinginan kegiatan dari penerbit. Apabila guru sendiri yang membuatnya maka guru bisa menyesuaikan dengan apa yang akan dicapay oleh guru. Penelitian ini bertujian untuk mengetahui bagaimana guru memanfaatkan tekhnologi informasi dalam merancang mendia pembelajaran dan mengetahui bagaimana usaha guru merancang mendia pembelajaran. Metode yang digunakan dalam penlitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini diperoleh bahwa PAUD di Siak Hulu menggunakan teknologi informasi dalam merancang media pembelajaran.

TIME for Kids to Learn Gender Stereotypes: Analysis of Gender and Political Leadership in a Common Social Studies Resource for Children

AbstractWhile early gendered messages mold children's expectations about the world, we know relatively little about the depictions of women in politics and exposure to gender stereotypes in elementary social studies curricula. In this article, we examine the coverage of political leaders in the children's magazine TIME for Kids, a source commonly found in elementary school classrooms. Coding all political content from this source over six years, we evaluate the presence of women political leaders and rate whether the leaders are described as possessing gender-stereotypic traits. Our results show that although TIME for Kids covers women leaders in greater proportion than their overall representation in politics, the content of the coverage contains gendered messages that portray politics as a stereotypically masculine field. We show that gendered traits are applied differently to men and to women in politics: feminine and communal traits are more likely to be applied to women leaders, while men and women are equally described as having masculine and agentic traits. Portrayals of women political leaders in stereotype-congruent ways is problematic because early messages influence children's views of gender roles.

They read storybooks, children magazine and comic books, and listened to stories through audio-cassette and radio. There were various contents to choose from; H.C Andersen and Brothers Grimm’s classic stories, Disney’s classic fairy tales, European and American super hero comic books, and Indonesian traditional stories. Indonesian traditional stories were introduced and brought by local children magazines and recorded stories from audio-cassette.

Trajectories in Argentine Children's Literature: Constancio C. Vigil and Horacio Quiroga

Children's author and publishing entrepreneur Constancio C. Vigil was a Uruguayan who spent most of his working life in Argentina. He was best known for his children's magazine Billiken (1919 to present). Vigil's contemporary and compatriot Horacio Quiroga also made the move across the River Plate and went on to have a transformative impact on Argentine literary culture, in part through his Jungle Tales for Children (1924). Both Quiroga and Vigil aspired to have their works for children accepted as school reading books, recognising the role of school authorities in the formation of the national canon. Vigil and Quiroga's trajectories of inclusion and exclusion, and their extraordinary contribution to the Argentine and Latin American cultural landscape in the first half of the twentieth century, provide a window onto the curation of an Argentine national children's literature at the same time as challenging the very nature of such a category.

Revista Pulgarcito (1904-1907): la formación de un público infantil para la Argentina

El artículo, enmarcado en el campo de la glotopolítica, estudia, sobre un corpus de 16 números, la revista infantil argentina Pulgarcito. En una primera instancia, el trabajo describe el contexto social y material de aparición de esa publicación. Luego, repasa las propiedades de las nuevas formas de circulación de la palabra escrita propiciadas por la modernización de las revistas, y las nuevas formas de lectura. Se propone demostrar que la explotación del segmento infantil comenzaría entonces una carrera, actualmente en vigor, en la formación del niño como consumidor, y que la prensa infantil argentina de fines del XIX y comienzos del XX jugaría un rol central en la difusión de ese modelo de infancia. Finalmente, analiza la gestión de contenidos vinculados con la modelación del ciudadano, la propuesta de nuevas formas de lectura extraescolares, y la presencia de distintas pautas lingüísticas como ensayos de lo que pronto se constituiría como forma lingüística de la prensa infantil en Argentina.

Milliyet Çocuk and the Making of Children's Literary Culture in Turkey in the 1970s

This article is based on a systematic content analysis of Milliyet Çocuk, a children's magazine published by a left-leaning publishing house in the politically polarised context of Turkey in the late 1970s. It outlines the socio-political and cultural context, defines Milliyet Çocuk's position in the structure of the publishing field and questions how a non-majority group made space for themselves in a nation's children's literature. The archival material used in this article has been collected for the course New Perspectives in Cultural History, taught by Prof. Cengiz Kırlı. My research is funded by the Swedish Institute.

Figuring Korean Futures: Children's Literature in Modern Korea by Dafna Zur

Reviewed by: Figuring Korean Futures: Children's Literature in Modern Korea by Dafna Zur Yeojoo Lim (bio) Figuring Korean Futures: Children's Literature in Modern Korea, by Dafna Zur. Stanford UP 2017. Tongsim is a Korean word which is a "combination of the character tong for child and sim for heart/mind" (6). The concept of tongsim, or the child-heart as Dafna Zur translated, has been recognized as the most essential element of children's literature for most Koreans for a century. Even though the interpretation and the application of the concept slightly varies by scholars and writers, no one can deny the natural and tight connection between Korean children's literature and the concept of the child-heart. With Figuring Korean Futures: Children's Literature in Modern Korea, Dafna Zur focuses on this relationship. As in the title of the book, "Figuring Korean Futures," Zur pays special attention to the point that the figure of the child was recognized as the future and hope of the nation during the colonial and postcolonial periods of Korea. She insists the concept of the child-heart—the perspective on [End Page 205] children as pure and innocent beings untouched by the burden from the past—worked as a driving force among intellectuals and writers to dream about a brighter future even in the darkest hours. Based on the idea that texts and images in the children's magazines exhibit the desire for modernization and nation-building, Zur traces children's periodicals published between 1908, when the first magazine for youth appeared, and 1950, when the Korean War broke out. The introduction to Figuring Korean Futures, "The Child and Modern Korea," explains the historical, political, and social background of the emergence of child-heart and its relationship with Korean children's literature. Indicating that the term child-heart has been used indiscriminately so far and thus obscured the meaning of children to different interest groups in different periods, Zur argues that she intends to "flesh out this term and trace its political and social contours" through this book (6). Chapter 1, "The Youth Magazine in Early Colonial Korea," begins with introducing two literary figures who had great influence on the history of Korean literature in the early twentieth century—Ch'oe Nam-sŏn and Yi Kwang-su. Zur mentions that both Ch'oe and Yi "saw youth as the only group capable of carrying Korea forward into a new future" (32). She indicates the purpose of Ch'oe's first magazine, Sonyŏn, which was first published in 1908, was to educate and reform Korea's youth, most of whom were still illiterate and had no reading materials for pleasure. By thoroughly analyzing texts and images from Sonyŏn, Zur demonstrates how this magazine pursued delivering modern knowledge to Korean youth and encouraging them to build a spatial sense of nation. Her keen analysis also points out that the adventure and development of Korean youth were only encouraged within the boundaries of a Japanese colonial framework. Zur argues that despite its contribution to Korean children's literature by providing pleasure reading materials for youth, Sonyŏn did not confront the important question of what it means to be young people in a politically unstable country that was on the verge of colonization. In explaining these intellectuals' longing for Korea's modernization in the early twentieth century, Zur refers to Yi's manifesto, "On the Centrality of Children," which severely criticized Korea's old tradition, even to say "Let us feast on our parent's blood … and destroy the graves of the ancestors" (45). While reading this chapter, I was quite bewildered, because there was no mention that Yi's manifesto was extremely controversial at that time. Zur also neglects to reveal that Ch'oe and Yi [End Page 206] were notorious pro-Japanese collaborators. Even though the two intellectuals were Korean independence activists in the beginning, they later changed their minds and became enthusiastic supporters of Japanese rule. They encouraged Korean youth to volunteer for the Imperial Army and extolled the greatness of the Japanese emperor when they were still influential literary authorities. Trends in marketing foods to children in Slovenian magazines: a content analysis.

Food marketing is an important factor influencing children's food preferences. In Slovenia the use of magazines is widespread among children. We investigated food advertising in children's and teens' magazines (CTM) in 2013 and 2017. The penetration of food advertising was compared with magazines targeting the adult population. A repeated cross-sectional study. Magazines were searched for branded food references (BFR). All BFR were categorised and evaluated using the WHO Europe nutrient profile model. Slovenia. All issues of CTM and a selected sample of issues of adult-targeting magazines and newspapers published in Slovenia in 2013 and 2017. One hundred and seventy-five issues of CTM (ninety-two in 2013, eighty-three in 2017) and 675 issues of adult-targeted magazines and newspapers were analysed (345 in 2013, 330 in 2017). In 2017, food advertising in CTM dropped notably but the opposite was found for adult-targeted magazines. Regular advertisements dominated in 2017 in CTM, while in 2013, 83 % of BFR types were games/puzzles, competitions and product placements. Chocolate and confectionery were the most advertised in CTM and food supplements in adults' magazines. Most foods in CTM were classed as 'not permitted' in both years (98 % in 2013 and 100 % in 2017). The advertisements in CTM still mostly refer to unhealthy foods. The extent of food advertising has dropped considerably since 2013. On the contrary, food advertising in printed media targeting adults has increased, chiefly referring to food supplements and foods that do not pass the WHO Europe nutrient profile model criteria.

Polskie książki dla dzieci i młodzieży wydawane w Galicji Wschodniej w XIX w.

The article presents the leading firms printing Polish books and magazines for children and young readers published in Eastern Galicia; discusses also the quantitative and qualitative effects of this publishing activity. It is composed of two parts. The first includes a presentation of the publishing milieu in Lvov: directions of activity of both printing firms and publishing institutions, which were operating in this metropolitan town. The second part concerns the typographic production made by the provincial outlayers and editors for juvenile. The analysis of the repertoire of Galician publishing houses made it possible to determine what and how many Polish books have been addressed to young readers as well as evaluate the considerable contribution of these houses to the development of the education, patriotism and the national culture - especially in the times of Galician autonomy.

The life and work of artists-illustrators of book editions by Borys Grinchenko have been researched in the article. It has been found out that the writer, public figure Borys Dmytrovych Grinchenko paid great importance to illustrating books and magazines for children. The specifics of the development of book illustrations has been disclosed, there have been presented short biographies of famous artists who in different years illustrated Borys Grinchenko’s works: A. Slastion, Yu. Mykhailiv, V. Zeldis, V. Krychevskyi, P. Lapin, G. Din, N. Sobol, O. Gubaryev, I. Filonov, M. Dmytrenko, S. Sokolov, M. Storozhenko, N. Mudrik-Mrytsa, V. Bokovnya, V. Evdokymenko, G. Zhurnovska, K. Muzyka, K. Shchepkina, M. Pshinka, B. Nazarenko, A. Fedko, V. Yermolenko. The names of the illustrated works have been clarified. It has been discovered that illustrations are not just the accompaniment or decoration of the book, they seem to “participate” in the reading process, help to reveal the plot and the characters’ images more clearly, highlight the climax moments of the literary work, thereby contributing to a deeper and more emotional perception of the text by the reader. Therefore, in the complex process of creating illustrations, the level, artistic taste, life experience of the artist are of great importance. The deeper and brighter his personality is and the greater perfection and persuasiveness the graphic image created by the artist acquires, the more reflection and reasoning the book evokes. It has been proved that each illustrator, relying on the reality recreated by the writer, enriches the literary material with his own life experience, his own associations, personal attitude to the literary work and its characters. From the illustrator’s point of view the choice of the most important thing determines the artist’s worldview and creative personality. This explains the stylistic diversity of the interpretation of Borys Grinchenko’s works in the illustrations of various artists.

ISBN: 978-80-246-3413-5 In many countries and cultures around the world, World War II and the Holocaust are important literary topics in literature for children and young adults. The stories and narratives about the war often center on a child or adolescent protagonist and look at the lives of children in times of war. The volume, edited by Jana Čeňková (Charles University, Prague), sheds light on childhoods in times of war in Czech children's literature and journalism. It also includes Geman-language (and some Dutch and Slovak) works, which necessarily played a role between 1939 and 1945 because of the German occupation of what was then Czechoslovakia. The introductory chapters by Milena Šubrtová, Pavel Suk, and Jan Halada trace the measures of the National Socialist education policies and their impact on the Czech publishing industry. The Board of Trustees for the Education of Youth, created by the National Socialists, was the most influential institution in this respect. It stood behind a Czech version of the young adult series War, Adventure, and Colonial Youth Library of the Berlin publisher Steiniger, published in Prague by Orbis beginning in 1939. The board also encouraged the publication of new magazines that promoted the image of virtuous, patriotic boys and girls true to National Socialist ideology. These magazines adapted formats and special columns from popular Czech youth magazines, such as the idea of a book club. Suk's contribution shows how the National Socialist ideology, most apparent in racist and anti-Semitic content, already exerted its influence before the German occupation—such as in the case of the magazine Mladý Hlasatel, founded in 1935, which printed posters of the Hitler Youth or Nazi interpretations of historical events prior to 1939. Ester Nováková, Luisa Nováková, Jaroslav Toman, and Jana Čeňková examine how Czech children's literature responded to the German occupation and World War II by analyzing individual works and their aesthetics. Adopting similar strategies as adult fiction, children's books published during the occupation tend to set their stories in the past or to anchor them in local traditions. They return to key historical events of Czech history and celebrate the importance of local and regional identities for the country, only obliquely commenting the current occupation by a foreign military force. The early post-war years see the emergence of a long series of children's books that remember life during the war most often from the perspective of child and adolescent protagonists. This raises the question of the intended audience and, hence, the question of what to tell about the horrors of the war, and how. It becomes apparent that many children's books focus on extraordinary situations during the war, such as resistance to the National Socialists or the survival of a Czech woman in a German town. Many also recount traumatic experiences of child protagonists who denounce the actions of the adults. A few essays explore the authorship of literary representations of childhood in times of war. Tamara Bučková shows how authors of German-language books draw on personal memories and use literary devices to give them shape, or they [End Page 67] base their literary storytelling on true events experienced by others. Radek Malý and Jarmila Sulovská present a number of impressive war diaries and childhood memoirs originally not intended for child readers or publication but now published for young readers as relevant, authentic testimonies. Most contributions observe that the Holocaust and World War II are imperative topics of contemporary children's literature. The Slovak children's magazine Slniečko, analyzed by Zuzana Stanislavová, seems to be an exception—for World War II is no longer touched upon after 1990.
