Ion-exchange properties of 4-hydroxyacetophenone-biuret-formaldehyde tercopolymer

Terpolymers prepared by condensation of 4-hydroxyacetophenone and biuret with formaldehyde in presence of acid catalyst (2M HCl) proved to be selective chelating ion exchange resins for certain metal ions. Chelation ion exchange properties of these terpolymers were studied for Cu 2+, Ni 2+, Co 2+, Fe 3+, Zn 2+, Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ ions. A batch equilibrium method was employed in the study of the selectivity of metal ion uptake involving the measurements of distribution of a given metal ion between the polymer sample and a solution containing the metal ion. The study was carried out over a wide pH range and in media of various ionic strengths. The terpolymers showed a higher selectivity for Fe 3+, Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ ions than for Co 2+, Zn 2+, Cd 2+, Hg 2+ and Pb 2+ ions.

Methyl Methacrylate-8-quinolinyl Acrylate Copolymers-II: Ion-exchange Study

The chelating ion-exchange properties of the methylmethacrylate (MMA)-8-quinolinyl acrylate (8-QA) copolymers, synthesized using different monomer feed ratios, were estimated by batch equilibration method. Five metal ions viz., Cu+2,Ni+2,Co+2, Zn+2 and Fe+3 were used to evaluate the capability of MMA-8-QA copolymers as a cation exchangers. The ion-exchange study was carried out under three different experimental variables viz., pH of the aqueous medium, electrolyte and its ionic strength and shaking time. It was observed that due to the presence of a pendant ester-bound quinolinyl group, the copolyraers are capable of exchanging the tested cations from their aqueous solutions.

Comparison of the chelating ion exchange properties of dye coated cellulose and polystyrene substrates for the separation and determination of trace metals from aqueous media

The following paper describes the comparison of a number of dye impregnated polystyrene resins and dye coated cellulose for the chelating ion exchange of metal ions. Dye loadings, capacity factors, metal adsorption capacity and selectivities were measured. The cellulose substrate was found to have a strong affinity for copper but had a very low capacity. Of the polysterene resins, highly cross-linked macronets gave the highest metal adsorption capacities. For one of the resins, an example of a separation of a synthetic mixture of alkaline earth metals in high ionic strength media is described.

Ion-exchanging properties and coordinating behaviour of poly[3,5-(1-propio-2,4-dihydroxy phenylene)butylene

Resin (RPPBD) prepared by Friedel-Craft's polycondensation of 2,4-dihydroxypropiophenone with 1,4-butane diol in the presence of polyphosphoric acid catalyst proved to be a selective ion-exchange resin and indicates coordination tendency for some metal ions. The resin was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, viscosity study and its number average molecular mass ( M n ) was determined by non-aqueous titration and found to be 2475 g/mol. Chelation ion-exchange properties of this resin have also been studied employing batch equilibration method. It was employed to study selectivity of metal ion uptake over a wide ph range and in media of various ionic strength. The overall rate of metal uptake follows the order: UO 2 2+ > Fe 2+ > Cu 2+ > Ni 2+

A number of resin copolymers were synthesised by condensing 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazone of resacetophenone with furfural and substituted hydroxy aromatic compounds in the presence of some acids and bases as catalyst. The physicochemical properties of the resins have been reported. The ion exchange properties have studied by using a batch equilibrium method. The distribution of a number of metal ions between an aqueous solution and the resin have been measured. A wide range of pH and variable ionic strengths have been investigated.

Poly[1,3(2-ethoxy-4-hydroxy-5-propylphenylene)propylene] copolymer as an ion exchanger

The present paper reports the synthesis and characterization of a copolymer, The copolymer sample was synthesized by Friedel-Crafts polycondensation of 2-hydroxy-4 ethoxypropiophenone with 1,3-propane diol in the presence of polyphosphoric acid catalyst. The copolymer was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and viscosity study, and its number-average molecular weight (M) was determined by non-aqueous titration and found to be 2855 g mol- 1. Chelation ion-exchange properties have also been studied, employing a batch-equilibration method. It was employed to study selectivity of metal ion uptake over a wide pH range and in media of various ionic strengths. The overall rate of metal uptake follows the order UOl + > Fe3+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+.

Physicochemical study of complexation and ion-exchange properties of 2-hydroxy-4-ethoxypropiophenone—ethylene glycol polymer

Copolymers (HEPP-EG) were synthesized by the condensation of 2-hydroxy-4-ethoxypropiophenone with ethylene glycol in presence of polyphosphoric acid as a catalyst. The copolymers were characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, viscosity and thermal studies. The number-average molecular weight (Mn) was measured by non-aqueous conductometric titration.The copolymer HEPP-EG-6 was complexed with metal ions, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2, Mn2+and Zn2+and characterized. Chelation ion-exchange properties have been studied by employing the batch equilibration method.

Chelating ion-exchange properties of homopolymer and copolymers of N-(4-carboxy-3-hydroxyphenyl))maleimide

The homopolymer of CHPM and its copolymers with styrene and divinylbenzene (DVB), prepared by addition polymerization, proved to be selective chelating ion-exchange polymers. The chelating ion-exchange properties of these polymers were studied for Ca 2+, Cr 3+, Fe 3+, Ni 2+, Cu 2+, Zn 2+, Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ ions using a batch equilibrium method. The study was carried out over a wide pH range and in media of various ionic strengths. The polymers showed good selectivity for Fe 3+, Ni 2+ and Pb 2+ ions compared to the other ions under study. The results of the separation study of Pb 2+ from the Pb 2+Ca 2+ admixture and Fe 3+ from the Fe 3+Cr 3+ admixture were promising. The regeneration study indicated that the polymers could be reused several times and the best stripping agent was 1.0 M H 2SO 4.

AbstractA large number of copolymers were synthesized by condensing 2,4‐dinitrophenyl hydrazone of 4‐hydroxy acetophenone (4HA 2,4 DNPH) with substituted benzoic acids/phenols and formaldehyde in the presence of NaOH or HCl as catalyst. The resins were characterized by IR spectra. The decomposition temperature, solubility parameter, and viscositv of the polymers have been determined. The ion‐exchange properties have been studied using the batch equilibrium method. The measurement of the distribution of a given metal ion between an aqueous solution and the resins has been performed. The investigation was carried out over a wide range of pH and varying the ionic strength of the medium. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

AbstractA number of resins have been synthesized by reacting orthohydroxy acetophenone‐semicarbazone with substituted benzoic acid and formaldehyde in the presence of some acid and basic catalyst. The physicochemical properties of the resins have been reported. The ion exchange properties of the resins have been investigated. Influence of electrolytes on the metal uptake of Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, and Mn2+ has been studied. The distribution of metal ions at different pH has also been reported. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Resacetophenoneoxime-thiourea-trioxane resin as chelating ion-exchanger

Resin (ROTT') prepared by condensation of resacetophenoneoxime and thiourea with trioxane in the presence of an acid catalyst proved to be a selective ion-exchange resin for some metal ions. The chelating ion-exchange properties of this resin were studied for Cu 2+, Ni 2+, Co 2+, Mn 2+, Zn 2+, Fe 3+ and UO 2 2+ ions. A batch-equilibration method was employed to study selectivity of metal ion uptake over a wide pH range and in media of various ionic strengths. The resin showed a higher selectivity for Cu 2+, Fe 3+ and UO 2 2+ ions than for Mn 2+, Co + and Zn 2+ ions. The separation of Fe 3+ and UO 2 2+ with Cu 2+, Ni 2+, Co 2+ and Zn 2+ ions was also investigated.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Ion-Exchange Properties of Copolymers Derived from Resacetophenone and 1,4-Butane Diol

Abstract Copolymers were prepared by condensing 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone with 1,4-butane diol in the presence of different amounts of polyphosphoric acid catalyst by using equimolar proportions of two reactants. The copolymer samples were characterized by elemental analysis. The number-average molecular weight was determined by nonaqueous conductometric titrations. Viscosity measurements carried out in DMSO at 35°C indicated normal behavior. Chelation ion-exchange properties were also studied by employing the batch equilibration method. The order of metal selectivity is UO2 2+ > Cu2+ > Fe3+ > Ni2+.

Synthesis and characterization of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxyacetophenoneurea-formaldehyde resins and their ion-exchange properties

Resins were prepared by condensing 2-hydroxy-4-methoxyacetophenone (2-H-4-MAc) with urea and formaldehyde in the presence of 2 M HCl/2 M H2SO4 catalyst with varying molar ratios of reacting monomers.
