Effects of Capsule Type on the Characteristics of Cement Mortars Containing Powder Compacted Capsules.

Several studies have been reported on self-healing concrete using bacteria, admixtures, and microcapsules. Among these self-healing techniques, encapsulating cement-based materials is advantageous in that large amounts of self-healing material can be contained in a capsule and released at the cracked site for a targeted reaction. This study produced a powder compacted capsule (PCC) using the droplet and blended manufacturing methods to encapsulate cementitious materials. This study refers to the PCCs as droplet-PCC (D-PCC) and blended-PCC (B-PCC) according to the manufacturing method used. The fluidity, compressive strength, carbonation, drying shrinkage, and water permeability of cement mortar with PCCs were evaluated. The test results show that the flow of the mortar sample using D-PCC was slightly higher than that of the mortar using B-PCC. The compressive strength of the mortar sample with B-PCC was generally higher than that of the mortar sample with D-PCC. The compressive strength of the B-PCC2 sample (with 0.2% of B-PCC) was the highest at all curing ages. This may be because the B-PCC fracture load was higher than that of the D-PCC. In addition, more hydrates were observed in the B-PCC sample than in the D-PCC sample. A crack healing effect was observed in the samples with PCC, regardless of the PCC type. The effect was the greatest in the B-PCC6 sample (with 0.6% of B-PCC). The results of this study provide a reference for the PCC type and mix ratio that would yield the best mechanical properties and crack healing effect.

The effect of recycled plastic waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on characteristics of cement mortar

This paper studied the effect of waste Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) on the workability and mechanical properties of the produced cement based mortar. However, five different waste PET weight fractions of 0, 5, 15, 25 and 50% were replaced with river sand in cement mortar mixtures with constant cement content and water to cement ratio of 525 kg/m3 and 0.48, respectively. The workability of the mixtures is enhanced by increasing the replacement level of plastic waste PET. On the other hand, the dry density, compressive and flexural strengths were reduced as waste PET incorporation increased except the mix contained 5% of PET which improved the compressive and flexural strengths. As a result of the dry density and compressive strength results, it was determined that the mixture containing 25% waste PET is considered as a lightweight mortar and suitable for structural purposes.

Influence of Curing Conditions on Strength Characteristics of Sea Sand Mortar

This present paper aims to investigate strength characteristics of cement mortar using natural sea sand as fine aggregate in different curing conditions. Research was carried out with making mortar mixtures by two types of cement, Portland Composite Cement (PCC) and Pozzolana Portland Cement (PPC) with tap water as mixing water. Characteristics of fine aggregate and strength of cement mortar use river sand (RS), sea sand (SS), and washed sea sand (WS) were observed. Further, specimens of cube mortar in size of 50 mm x 50 mm x 50 mm of six mortar mixture series were casted according to Indonesian Standard. At 24 hours after cube specimens were casted, cube mortar specimens were cured in three curing conditions such as tap water curing (TC), seawater curing (SC) and air curing (AC). After curing at certain period (3-day, 7-day, 14-day, and 28-day), cube mortar samples were tested in compressive strength. Results concluded that sea sand aggregate improve characteristic of mortar in compressive strength up to 28 days in all curing conditions, and there was no significant effect of type of curing water (TC and SC) on 28-day strength performance of mortar was obtained. In addition, sea sand could potentially be utilized as an aggregate in production of mortar and/or concrete.

Interfacial characteristics of cement mortars containing aggregate derived from industrial slag waste

ABSTRACT In this study, porosity assessment of cement mortars containing Precious Slag (PS) Ball – an industrial waste produced by rapid cooling of slag generated from steel making process by Slag Atomizing Technology – is done by Back-Scattered Electron (BSE) image analysis. PS incorporated mortars were fabricated and subsequently evaluated for compressive strength. BSE images were analyzed by pore segmentation method. Binarization on the images using Otsu’s thresholding method was done followed by the porosity determination. As the interfacial attributes were the primary concern, the porosity was determined from the aggregate surface to the 100 μm width. A total of 24 sections were analyzed and the mean values were plotted. Although the PS Ball incorporated mortar exhibited 10% lower strength at 28-day age, it showed stronger and less porous aggregate- matrix interface between (from particle surface up to 35 μm width) as compared to that of normal mortar containing sand, which is justifiable by the chemical composition of PS Ball attributed to the potential chemical binding. Further, the porosity decreased as the distance from aggregate surface increased. While the use of PS Ball is environmentally friendly, its enhanced interfacial properties with some strength loss of resulting cement mortars encourages its use in sustainable construction materials.

The residual crashed waste glass is becoming a serious environmental problem because it can be disposed only in landfills. Landfilling is an undesirable solution because waste glasses are not biodegradable, so nowadays the reutilization of this glass has drawn more and more attention, producing strong efforts to find a sustainable alternative to reuse and recycle them. Several studies in the world have shown that it is possible to replace the sand with cullet, partially. In this paper are presented and commented first experimental results of experimental tests using waste glass as a replacement for river sand in cement mortars.

Compressive Strength of Cement Mortar Using Sebha Clay, Treated by Sonication Method

Clay as natural pozzolan is found in the north of the city of Sebha, Libya. Sebha clay is relatively high in silica, and its physical and chemical properties could be referred to as ASTM C618 class N. Sonication treatment is carried out and the treated Sebha clay is used as a mineral admixture in the Portland cement mortar. Horn method 20 kHz frequencies with different powers and different times are used in the Sonication treated. The particle size distributions (PSD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) imaging are used to understand the mechanism of pozzolanic improvement of the Sebha clay after treatment by sonication. This paper shows the physical and chemical properties of sonication treat Sebha clay. The effect of magnitude of sonic power on pozzolanic activity of treated kaolin is investigated. The main aim of the present research is to study the strength characteristics of cement mortar using Sebha natural clay after sonication is treated as a partial replacement of ordinary Portland cement OPC. The parameters are investigated, including compressive strengths .The results show enhancement in particle size and pozzolanic activity of treated kaolin, with increase in sonic power and in the time.

An Elastoplastic Damage Constitutive Model for Cementitious Materials under Wet-Dry Cyclic Sulfate Attack

The mechanical properties of cement mortars subjected to wet-dry cyclic sulfate attack were studied by the compression strength test. The results showed that the ultimate compressive strength increased with number of cycles at the initial stage. However, after a certain time, it started to decrease with further increases in the number of cycles. Moreover, the concentration of the sodium sulfate solution proved to be an important factor affecting the ultimate compressive strength. Based on continuum damage mechanics theory, an elastoplastic damage constitutive model is presented to describe the mechanical behavior of cementitious materials under compressive stress. The results obtained agree well with the experimentally observed elastic, plastic, and damage characteristics of cement mortars under compressive stress.

Characteristics of Cement Mortar with Nano-SiO2 Particles

The amorphous or glassy silica, which is the major component of a pozzolan, reacts with calcium hydroxide formed from calcium silicate hydration. The rate of the pozzolanic reaction is proportional to the amount of surface area available for reaction. Therefore, it is plausible to add nano-SiO 2 particles (NS) to make high-performance concrete. The compressive strengths of cement mortar were evaluated at various water-cementitious material ratios (w/cm). Five different w/cm were used, including 0.23, 0.25, 0.32, 0.35, and 0.48 and four contents of NS, 3, 6, 9, and 12% by weight of cement. The compressive strengths of cement mortar with the addition of silica fume were also evaluated at a w/cm of 0.35 to compare with mortar containing nano-SiO 2 particles and three contents of silica fume were: 5, 10, and 15% by weight of cement. The experimental results show that the compressive strengths of mortars with NS were all higher than those of mortars containing silica fume at 7 and 28 days. It was demonstrated that the nano-particles were more valuable in enhancing strength than silica fume. This paper also analyzes some available examinations to monitor the hydration progress continuously, such as SEM observation, residual quantity test for Ca(OH) 2 , and the rate of heat evolution. The results of the examinations indicate that the SiO 2 in nano scale behave not only as a filler to improve the microstructure, but also as an activator to promote pozzolanic reactions.

Admixtures of irradiated nuclei of crystals and their influence upon the hardening of plain cement

Laboratory researches on and theoretical considerations of the influence of simple crystal nuclei and irradiated ones by ionizing penetrating radiation, on various characteristics of cement mortars, are discussed in the paper. Investigations of nucleation permitted a deeper explanation of the mechanism of radiation influence on acceleration of cement mortar hardening.
