History of environmental contamination at Sunny Corner Ag-Pb-Zn mine, eastern Australia: A meta-analysis approach.

Environmental impacts associated with mining can be important even after cessation of ore extraction, particularly where sites are abandoned and unremediated. Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is a common concern in such legacy mines where sulfide ores were extracted. AMD can introduce large concentrations of heavy metals to aquatic systems and contaminate the environment for many kilometres downstream of old mines. Understanding the pattern and history of contamination from legacy mines can help environmental managers make better management decisions. Meta-analysis is a statistical tool that can help determine the significance of changes in metal contamination over the years since cessation of mining. Here we use meta-analysis to examine metal contamination at and downstream of Sunny Corner silver (Ag)-lead (Pb)-zinc (Zn) mine in eastern Australia. Copper (Cu), Zn and Pb concentrations in water increased from 1978 to 2018 within 2km downstream of the main mine adit, whereas for stream sediment, only Zn concentrations increased significantly over the same period. In contrast, Pb concentrations in surface soil decreased over the years from 2000 to 2018.

Effect of organic carbon and metal accumulation on the bacterial communities in sulphidogenic sediments.

A unique geochemical setting in Lake Cadagno, Switzerland, has led to the accumulation of insoluble metal sulphides in the sedimentary record as the result of past airborne pollution. This offers an exceptional opportunity to study the effect of these metals on the bacterial communities in sediments, and in particular to investigate further the link between metal contamination and an increase in the populations of endospore-forming bacteria observed previously in other metal-contaminated sediments. A decrease in organic carbon and total bacterial counts was correlated with an increase in the numbers of endospores in the oldest sediment samples, showing the first environmental evidence of a decrease in nutrient availability as a trigger of sporulation. Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were the two dominant bacterial phyla throughout the sediment, the former in an area with high sulphidogenic activity, and the latter in the oldest samples. Even though the dominant Firmicutes taxa were stable along the sediment core and did not vary with changes in metal contamination, the prevalence of some molecular species like Clostridium sp. was positively correlated with metal sulphide concentration. However, this cannot be generalized to all endospore-forming species. Overall, the community composition supports the hypothesis of sporulation as the main mechanism explaining the dominance of endospore formers in the deepest part of the sediment core, while metal contamination in the form of insoluble metal sulphide deposits appears not to be linked with sporulation as a mechanism of metal tolerance in this sulphidogenic ecosystem.

Spatial and temporal variations of trace metals in sediments from the artificial Saemangeum Lake, Korea

Most of artificial lakes in Korea have suffered from severe eutrophication and/or contamination with various pollutants. The artificial Shihwa Lake that was created by dike construction in 1997 is well known for serious pollution for metals and nonylphenol after dike construction due to the continuous inflow of anthropogenic pollutants from industrial effluents and domestic sewage (Kim et al., 2003, 2009; Hong et al., 2010; Ra et al., 2011a, b). Trace metals persist in the environment and some metals (e.g., Pb, Hg and Cd) are toxic to marine organisms even at low concentration (Duffus, 2002; Jakimska et al., 2011). Thus, they are considered important environmental pollutants. The geochemical records in sediments not only document changes in metal contamination but also reflect changes in sedimentation, diagenetic mobility and change the composition of settling particulates, all of which are important in interpreting sediment distribution. Have the bioavailabilities of trace metals to a suite of biomonitors changed over three decades in SW England estuaries historically affected by mining?

Many estuaries of southwest England were heavily contaminated with toxic metals associated with the mining of copper and other metals, particularly between 1850 and 1900. The question remains whether the passage of time has brought remediation to these estuaries. In 2003 and 2006 we revisited sites in 5 metal-contaminated estuaries sampled in the 1970s and 1980s — Restronguet Creek, Gannel, West Looe, East Looe and Tavy. We evaluate changes in metal contamination in sediments and in metal bioavailabilities in sediments and water to local organisms employed as biomonitors. We find that the decline in contamination in these estuaries is complex. Differences in bioavailable contamination in the water column were detectable, as were significant detectable changes in at least some estuaries in bioavailable metal contamination originating from sediments. However, in the 100years since mining activities declined, bioavailable contamination has not declined to the regional baseline in any estuary affected by the mine wastes. The greatest decline in contamination occurred in the one instance (East Looe) where a previous industrial source of (Ag) contamination was considered. We used the macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum as biomonitors of dissolved metal bioavailabilities and the deposit feeders Nereis diversicolor and Scrobicularia plana as biomonitors of bioavailable metal in sediments. We found no systematic decrease in the atypically high Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations in the estuarine sediments over a 26year period. Accumulated metal (Ag, As, Cu, Pb, and Zn) concentrations in the deposit feeders are similarly still atypically high in at least one estuary for each metal, and there is no consistent evidence for general decreases in sediment metal bioavailabilities over time. We conclude that the legacy of mining in sheltered estuaries of southwest England is the ongoing presence of sediments rich in metals bioavailable to deposit feeders, while dissolved metal bioavailabilities from this historical source alone are no longer atypically high.
