Spatiotemporal distribution of mangrove along the Egyptian Red Sea coast and analysis of hydrological impact on growth patterns

AbstractThis study presents an in-depth spatiotemporal analysis of mangrove ecosystems along Egypt’s Red Sea coast, utilizing satellite imagery and GIS to examine changes from 2003 to 2022. We evaluate the effects of hydrological factors, specifically rainfall and runoff -presented by Stream Power Index-, on mangrove growth patterns. Results indicate a significant increase in mangrove areas, with a notable annual growth rate, despite a reduction in a specific region. This research highlights the integral role of catchment area runoff (R2 = 0.735, R = 0.857, P-value = 0.003 < 0.05, CV = 70.26%), rather than direct rainfall, in mangrove expansion, contributing to the understanding of mangrove resilience and informing sustainable coastal management strategies. The study bridges a significant research gap by mapping decadal mangrove changes, offering insights into the dynamics affecting these crucial ecosystems.

Lake Surface Water Temperature in high altitude lakes in the Pyrenees: Combining satellite with monitoring data to assess recent trends

Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT) influences critical bio-geological processes in lake ecosystems, and there is growing evidence of rising LSWT over recent decades worldwide and future shifts in thermal patterns are expected to be a major consequence of global warming.At a regional scale, assessing recent trends and anticipating impacts requires data from a number of lakes, but long term in situ monitoring programs are scarce, particularly in mountain areas. In this work, we propose the combined use of satellite-derived temperature with in situ data for a five-year period (2017–2022) from 5 small (<0.5km2) high altitude (1880–2680 masl) Pyrenean lakes. The comparison of in situ and satellite-derived data in a common period (2017–2022) during the summer season showed a notably high (r = 0.94, p < 0.01) correlation coefficient, indicative of a robust relationship between the two data sources. The root mean square errors ranged from 1.8 °C to 3.9 °C, while the mean absolute errors ranged from 1.6 °C to 3.6 °C.We applied the obtained in situ-satellite eq. (2017–2022) to Landsat 5, 7 and 8/9 data since 1985 to reconstruct the summer surface temperature of the five studied lakes with in situ data and to four additional lakes with no in situ monitoring data. Reconstructed LSWT for the 1985–2022 showed an upward trend in all lakes. Moreover, paleolimnological reconstructions based on sediment cores studies demonstrate large changes in the last decades in organic carbon accumulation, sediment fluxes and bioproductivity in the Pyrenean lakes.Our research represents the first comprehensive investigation conducted on high mountain lakes in the Pyrenees that compares field monitoring data with satellite-derived temperature records. The results demonstrate the reliability of satellite-derived LSWT for surface temperatures in small lakes, and provide a tool to improve the LSWT in lakes with no monitoring surveys.

A Decadal Change in Atmospheric Nitrogen Deposition at a Rural Site in Southern China

Elevated atmospheric reactive nitrogen (Nr) emissions and the subsequent nitrogen (N) deposition have negatively impacted the global environment, particularly in China. In order to assess the long-term trends in atmospheric N deposition in the south of China, Taojiang County in Hunan Province was selected as a representative rural area for study. We analyzed interannual variation in atmospheric Nr, including gaseous ammonia (NH3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrate acid (HNO3) vapor, particulate ammonium (NH4+), and nitrate (NO3−) in air and NH4+-N and NO3−-N in precipitation from 2011 to 2020. The 10-year average atmospheric wet-plus-dry N deposition was 41.9 kg N ha−1 yr−1, which decreased by approximately 24% after 2012, indicating that NH3 and NOx emissions were effectively reduced by emission controls introduced in 2013. Wet deposition accounted for approximately 74% of the total N deposition and was significantly influenced by annual precipitation amount. Reduced N (NH3, pNH4+, and NH4+ in rainwater) was the dominant form, comprising approximately 58% of the total N deposition, while oxidized N (pNO3−, NO2, HNO3, and NO3− in rainwater) accounted for 42% of the total N deposition. Atmospheric HNO3, NO2, and NH3 concentrations and deposition declined by 30–80% over the decade, while particulate NH4+ and NO3− concentrations and deposition remained at relatively stable levels, which suggests that ongoing research and policy should focus on rural particulate pollution. Future strategies must concentrate on the integrated control of NH3 and NOx emissions to mitigate air pollution and protect human health, particularly in rural areas because current abatement efforts are primarily directed toward urban areas and the industrial sector, whereas non-point source NH3 pollution, influenced mainly by agricultural activities, dominates in rural regions.

Reconstruction of long-term hydrologic change and typhoon-induced flood events over the entire island of Taiwan

Study focusThis study presents long-term and high-resolution modeling of flood occurrence, interdecadal patterns of river-floodplain dynamics, and analysis of flooding during two typhoon events—Nari and Morakot over Taiwan. The modeling system combines a hydrological model (HiGW-MAT) and a river hydrodynamics model (CaMa-Flood), simulating hydrologic-hydrodynamic processes at ∼ 5 km resolution with flood occurrences downscaled to ∼ 90 m. New hydrological insights for the regionAs the first investigation to conduct spatially comprehensive and temporally continuous modeling in Taiwan, this study presents important advances on the application of large-scale hydrological-hydrodynamic models in settings like that of Taiwan with important implications on flood prediction under climate change. The assessment of interdecadal changes in streamflow indicates no consistent trends over the past four decades; however, the variabilities in monthly-scale streamflow are significant and regionally diverse across Taiwan. Decadal changes in flood occurrence are also minimal at the island-scale, but the changes vary substantially across different regions and exhibit an increased variability over time. Furthermore, the simulated flood patterns in response to Typhoons Nari and Morakot suggest that the modeling framework can be used to reproduce the spatial dynamics and temporal progression of flooding under extreme events in relatively small regions like Taiwan.

Fluviomorphic trajectories for dryland ephemeral stream channels following extreme flash floods

AbstractEphemeral alluvial streams pose globally significant flood hazards to human habitation in drylands, but sparse data for these regions limit understanding of the character and impacts of extreme flooding. In this study, we document decadal changes in dryland ephemeral channel patterns at two sites in the lower Colorado River Basin (southwestern United States) that were ravaged by extraordinary flash floods in the 1970s: Bronco Creek, Arizona (1971), and Eldorado Canyon, Nevada (1974). We refer to these two floods as ‘fluviomorphic erasure events’, because they produced blank slates for the channels that were gradually moulded by more frequent but much smaller flood events. We studied georectified aerial photos that span ~60 years at each site to show that both study sites recovered to their pre‐flood condition after ~25 years. We employ channel network metrics: stream‐link area (SLA), geometric braiding index and junction‐node density. Each metric decreased during the short‐duration extreme flood erasure events. Subsequently, a fluviomorphic trajectory at a decadal tempo returned the channels to pre‐flood values. The SLA decreased at rates of 3.6%–4.1% per year in the decade following the floods. The extreme flood events decreased the pre‐flood geometric braiding index at the two sites by 56%–68%, and it took 15–24 years for this index to recover to pre‐flood values. In contrast, it took 30–35 years for the channels to recover to a uniform pre‐flood channel form, as indicated by the spatial distribution of bars and junction nodes. Our results document baseline examples of ephemeral stream channel evolution trajectories, as future climatic change will likely accelerate increases in the magnitudes and frequencies of extreme floods and geomorphic erasure events.

Quantifying Contributions of External Forcing and Internal Variability to Arctic Warming During 1900–2021

AbstractArctic warming has significant environmental and social impacts. Arctic long‐term warming trend is modulated by decadal‐to‐multidecadal variations. Improved understanding of how different external forcings and internal variability affect Arctic surface air temperature (SAT) is crucial for explaining and predicting Arctic climate changes. We analyze multiple observational data sets and large ensembles of climate model simulations to quantify the contributions of specific external forcings and various modes of internal variability to Arctic SAT changes during 1900–2021. We find that the long‐term trend and total variance in Arctic‐mean SAT since 1900 are largely forced responses, including warming due to greenhouse gases and natural forcings and cooling due to anthropogenic aerosols. In contrast, internal variability dominates the early 20th century Arctic warming and mid‐20th century Arctic cooling. Internal variability also explains ∼40% of the recent Arctic warming from 1979 to 2021. Unforced changes in Arctic SAT are largely attributed to two leading modes. The first is pan‐Arctic warming with stronger loading over the Eurasian sector, accounting for 70% of the unforced variance and closely related to the positive phase of the unforced Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). The second mode exhibits relatively weak warming averaged over the entire Arctic with warming over the North American‐Pacific sector and cooling over the Atlantic sector, explaining 10% of the unforced variance and likely caused by the positive phase of the unforced Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO). The AMO‐related changes dominate the unforced Arctic warming since 1979, while the IPO‐related changes contribute to the decadal SAT changes over the North American‐Pacific Arctic.

Dynamic changes and impacts of accumulated temperature on the Tibetan plateau from 1980 to 2018 based on the fusion of simulation and observation data

In the context of global warming, the thermal conditions of the Tibetan Plateau have changed significantly in recent decades. In the present study, we analysed the spatiotemporal variation in T ≥ 0 °C accumulated temperature (AT0) on the Tibetan Plateau from 1980 to 2018 and its effect on normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) changes by fusing climate model outputs and ground observations using the High Accuracy Surface Modeling (HASM). Cross-validation revealed that the root mean square error (RMSE) and R2 of the fused data from HASM were 1.593 °C and 0.719, respectively, which were greater than the 5.864 °C and 0.385, respectively, before fusion, indicating that HASM fusion improved the accuracy and that a more accurate AT0 could be obtained. Over the past 39 years, AT0 on the Tibetan Plateau had increased at a rate of 7.53 °C/year. The growth period was extended by 0.46 days/year, while the start and end of the growth period were 0.27 days/year earlier and 0.18 days/year later, respectively. Analysis of the decadal change in AT0 revealed that the areas with AT0 < 500 °C decreased by 5 % and that the areas with AT0 > 2000 °C increased by 6.2 %. However, a slower warming trend appeared after 2010 because of the decreasing rate of the daily mean temperature increase during the growth period. Increasing AT0 also promoted vegetation growth, especially in parts of the southern and eastern plateau regions, with a Pearson's correlation coefficient of 0.46 on the entire plateau between AT0 and the average NDVI during the growth periods. However, there was a significant negative correlation with a coefficient lower than −0.4 in the Qaidam Basin, and partial correlation analysis showed that the extension of the growth period was the main factor influencing the decrease in the NDVI in the Qaidam Basin.

Anthropogenic influence on seasonal extreme temperatures in eastern China at century scale

Due to the scarcity of observational data in the early 20th century, very limited research has explored the impact of human activities on temperature extremes at the regional scale. Here we used a newly developed homogenized near-surface air temperature dataset from the beginning of the 20th century to estimate the frequency and intensity of extreme temperatures in eastern China and evaluate their anthropogenic influence based on models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). We found clear increases in warm extremes and decreases in cold extremes since 1901 for both annual and seasonal mean temperatures, with more pronounced changes in recent decades. The most significant warming occurred in spring and winter, approximately double the smallest warming observed in autumn. The CMIP6 models generally replicated the century-scale warming in annual and seasonal temperature extremes, showing increases in the frequency and intensity of warm extremes and corresponding decreases in cold extremes. The optimal fingerprinting detections suggest that the century-scale warming can be clearly attributed to anthropogenic forcing, including changes in seasonal extreme temperatures. Most observed changes in extreme temperatures were attributable to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, partially offset by a smaller negative impact from anthropogenic aerosol forcing, whereas natural forcing has played a minor role. These results provide important information for accurately projecting future changes in temperature extremes.

Vietnam tourism at the crossroads of socialism and market economy

ObjetivoVietnam ha pasado de ser un país devastado por la guerra a convertirse en un popular destino turístico. Aunque la investigación sobre el turismo en Vietnam ha crecido en número, ha faltado en gran medida un macroanálisis de la gobernanza y las políticas turísticas nacionales. Nuestra investigación ha enriquecido la literatura tanto de la economía política como del turismo tendiendo un puente entre ambas disciplinas al presentar las pautas de la gobernanza del turismo en la economía de transición de Vietnam.Diseño/metodología/enfoqueEste documento de síntesis ofrece un análisis sistemático del turismo de Vietnam que abarca la intensificación de la intervención gubernamental y los drásticos cambios del mercado en las últimas décadas. Los autores ofrecen un análisis cronológico del desarrollo del turismo junto con los principales giros políticos y económicos del país. Además, el análisis del contenido de los documentos políticos y el análisis del mercado turístico ilustran mejor las repercusiones de los sistemas político-económicos en la gobernanza y las políticas turísticas.ResultadosLas políticas turísticas y el análisis del mercado revelan un compromiso entre la centralización y la descentralización del sistema de gobernanza y un compromiso entre los objetivos económicos y sociales del desarrollo. Al equilibrar estos opuestos, la fuerza interna del mercado nacional y la resistencia de las comunidades y las empresas se convierten en activos clave para el crecimiento en unas circunstancias en las que la economía de mercado socialista sigue informando el desarrollo actual y futuro de la industria. LAND USE LAND COVER (LULC) CHANGE ANALYSIS IN BAGUIO CITY USING GIS-BASED TRANSITION POTENTIAL MODELING

Abstract. Baguio City experienced rapid LULC changes in the past decades due to rising population resulting in increasing demand in residential and commercial areas. The LULC change from 2003 to 2011 was quantified through a transition potential model using Artificial Neural Network and Cellular Automata. Potential driving factors considered in this study were barangay population and population density, land category, elevation, slope, soil type, and distances from the Central Business District, roads, and sinkholes. Multilayer Perceptron with Backpropagation technique was employed in the modeling simulations where various value combinations for the five hyperparameters were tested. Among the combinations of hyperparameter values tested, the combination that achieved the highest simulation accuracy was 1, 0.001, 1000, 10, and 0.01 for Neighborhood, Learning Rate, Iterations, Hidden Layers, and Momentum respectively. The prediction results for the year 2035 show that built-up areas in Baguio City will increase by 760.79 hectares while vegetation and bare soil will decrease by 347.64 hectares and 413.26 hectares, respectively. Built-up areas are expected to form mostly in Alienable and Disposable lands, barangays with high population density, and areas near roads and pre-existing development. On the other hand, minimal built-up expansion is expected in vacant forests, forest reserves, and areas near sinkholes. These findings are in line with the city government's expectations. With an accuracy of 72.80% and a Kappa statistic of 0.61, it can be concluded that the model is capable of predicting future LULC change and may serve as a viable guide for future land use development plans.

A Chinese survey of clinical practice on the management of thyroid eye disease.

The management of thyroid eye disease (TED) has undergone significant changes for decades. The study sought to investigate current clinical practice on the management of TED in China. An online questionnaire survey was conducted from April to May 2023. The questionnaire involved diagnostic criteria for TED, multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) collaboration, and treatment preference for mild, moderate, and severe TED. A total of 289 questionnaires were collected, with 165 from endocrinologists and 124 from ophthalmologists. Only 36.7% of participants claimed there was an MDT clinical pattern for TED in their institutions. The coverage of biological agents was around 10% or lower. These were distinctly lower than in Western countries. About 62.6% of participants believed the incidence of TED has increased in recent years. Imaging techniques were used widely to assist in the diagnosis of TED. However, there was still controversy regarding the definition of proptosis in the Chinese population. Most doctors managed risk factors and provided orbital supportive treatments of artificial tears and glasses. For mild active TED, endocrinologists (39.4%) were inclined to recommend therapy for hyperthyroidism alone, while ophthalmologists (43.6%) preferred orbital corticosteroid injections. Currently, the most widely used treatment for moderate to severe active TED was high-dose intravenous corticosteroid (94.8%), while orbital radiotherapy combined with immunosuppressive agents was the most recognized second-line therapy (43.6%). The study documented the consistency and differences between current clinical practices in the management of TED in China and the recently updated guidelines. There was a remarkable difference between ophthalmology and endocrinology departments, warranting management optimization.

Inlet-adjacent beach and shoreline variability at decadal scales

Beaches provide storm protection and economic benefit for coastal communities and also host important habitats for keystone species, especially in the state of Florida. However, sea level rise, coastal construction, and intensifying storms are resulting in coastal erosion, which often requires informed mitigation and management strategies. This study aims to explore decadal-scale trends in morphology change and shoreline variability of inlet-adjacent beaches in Jupiter, Florida. Data from three locations over a period of three decades were analyzed to determine volumetric and contour changes above the shoreline (0 m elevation) and across the entire profile. The largest variability in decadal morphology change was measured at beaches closest to Jupiter Inlet. Substantial shoreline and beach changes were also associated with periods of higher storm activity. Variability in storm events, nourishment trends, and longshore sediment transport also influenced decadal morphologic change. To best adapt to coastal change and develop comprehensive beach-inlet management plans, it is imperative to understand past trends of shoreline variability and beach-nearshore erosion and accretion patterns. Results of this study demonstrate an approach to elucidate decadal patterns in morphology changes and drivers of change.

A STUDY ON REPRODUCTIVE LIFE OF THE BENGALEE HINDU FEMALES: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Reproduction is the process by which new individuals of a species are produced and the genetic materials are passed through generation after generation (Tortora, 2003). The existence of a species is maintained through the urge for the reproduction. Pearl (1939) accounted the urge for reproduction as basic attribute of all living organisms. The expressive form of this urge for the reproduction could be accounted as reproductivity or fertility. The urge for the reproduction in human could not be expressed in its full strength due to several restrictive factors work on it. Demographically observed fertility or infertility is the result of a well-defined number of both biological and behavioural factors, which serve to mediate the influence of culture, society, economic conditions, living standards, and other similar background determinants on individual reproductive behavior (Frank et al., 1994). The hedonistic attitude of human for the reduction of fertility would be described through the "Demographic Transition Model" (DTM) which defines the transition from high birth rates and high death rates to low birth rates and low death rates as part of the economic development of a country from a pre-industrial to an industrialized economy (Thompson, 1929). In the present study an attempt has been made to understand the current status of the reproductive life of the contemporary Bengalee females and the effect of demographic transition as well as fertility transition on the same. Materials of the present cross sectional study comprises with 200 adult married Bengalee females belonging to different caste group lived in a semi urban region of west Bengal. Mean age of the population was 32.63 ± 10.64. The result shows a remarkable decadal change in the reproductive life of the population. Age at menarche seems to follow the secular trend to being decreasing when comparing with a data (mean age 12.79 ± 41.37 and 13.41 ± 1.48 respectively). Comparison with a previous work revealed that the rate of literate women, employed women, the family income etc have been increased noticeable. The number of contraceptive used or adopt family planning families has also been increased remarkably in comparison with the earlier data (64.5 % and 56% respectively). Accordingly the rate of live birth has been decreased. The present study also differs from the age at marriage and marriage conception interval (MCI). Thus the present work revealed that the females (mothers) as well as the couples are more conscious about their reproductive life and adopt different family planning methods. Sharp decadal changes on their reproductive life could also be noticed which may be the ultimate result of the demographic transition.

Seasonal variability and long-term winter shoaling of the upper mixed layer in the southern Baltic Sea

The upper ocean mixed layer plays a crucial role in regulating the exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere. The Mixed Layer Depth (MLD) is a key parameter affecting the air-sea exchanges of momentum and heat and determining the upper ocean temperature. Numerous previous studies have investigated MLD variability in the global ocean or regional seas but no such studies were carried in the Baltic Sea. In this study, we present the first observational assessment of the MLD and its properties in the Southern Baltic Sea including quantification of its seasonal and long-term changes and identification of the multi-year winter shoaling. We calculated monthly maps of MLD in the southern Baltic Sea using a large number of historical CTD profiles collected in 1995–2021 from a combination of different data sets. To test the robustness of the results we compared the MLDs calculated using different threshold methods. Throughout the southern Baltic Sea, across its three basins, a distinct seasonality is evident in the MLD, with values varying from 12 m in July to 60 m in December–March. During winter the water column is well mixed down to the upper halocline depth and the MLD reaches about 45 m in the Bornholm Basin, 50 m in the Slupsk Furrow, and 60 m in the Gdansk Basin. The observed global warming and decadal changes in the salty inflows from the North Sea to the Baltic have had an impact on stratification by increasing water densities in the intermediate and deep layers. Consequently, density gradients have strengthened with depth while the upper ocean mixing has weakened during the winter season. The results reveal a significant winter shoaling of the mixed layer by 4 m per decade, driven by the increased stratification due to rising temperatures and salinity. These changes could have significant impacts on the dynamics and productivity of marine ecosystems.

Spatial and temporal variation in long-term sediment accumulation in a back-barrier salt marsh

In situ persistence of salt marshes in the face of sea-level rise relies on their ability to maintain substrate elevation through sufficient vertical accretion of sediment. However, sedimentation rates in salt marshes vary spatially and temporally, which complicates the assessment of their ability to keep up with sea-level rise. Here, we explore the spatial and temporal variation in sediment accumulation in a single back-barrier salt marsh site. Using one-time in situ measurements at the landscape scale, we obtained synoptic information of elevation and sediment thickness over the entire salt marsh in a chronosequence over centuries. Repeated measurements along short elevation transects (0.3–0.9 m +MHT) revealed decadal changes, complementing the broader marsh data with detailed information on elevation, thickness of the marsh deposits and accumulation rates. Thickness of the deposits was largely related to the elevation gradient: the sediment layer was thinner at the higher marsh (near the dunes and far away from the intertidal flats), and thicker at the lower marsh (near the intertidal flats). Moreover, the thickness of the layer increased with salt marsh age along the chronosequence, and age accounted for 72 % of variability in sediment accumulation. The rate of sediment accumulation was higher than the local rate of sea-level rise in the younger marsh, whereas it was equal to the rate of sea-level rise in the older marsh. In the older salt marsh, sediment accumulation was lower, possibly due to autocompaction in the thicker, older layers. Both at the landscape scale and along short elevation transects within individual drainage basins, sediment accumulation decreased with distance to sediment supply routes. However, their relative importance depended on the scale of observation. Distance to creeks accounted for 17 % of the variability in sediment accumulation at the landscape scale, compared to 4 % at the smaller scale. Similarly, the influence of distance to intertidal flats varied from 1 % at the landscape scale to 13 % at the smaller scale. Our main findings indicate that lower-elevation older marshes and higher-elevation younger marshes far away from sediment sources are at risk of not keeping pace with the local rate of sea-level rise and are potentially vulnerable to increased flooding.

Sustainable Human Resource Management in the Hospital Sector: A Review of Literature

During the initial phases of sustainable practices—organisations seem to be responsible towards their society and environment along with a focus on financial profits. Building on sustainable management theory, ‘sustainable human resource management’ concept receives significant interest from management, academicians and scholars. Studies related to this area are limited and are still emerging in the developing country context. In this article, the literature review suggests that sustainability could be the driver of the hospital sector in the system. Sustainability in the hospital sector through sustainable human resource management practices is necessary to build and adapt a concrete sustainable practices structure. The various service sectors are focusing on embedding environmental sustainability and lesser focus has been given to the other three elements of sustainability that is the strategic, social and humanistic approach. The present article approaches headed for the full range implementation of sustainable human resource management practices in the hospital sector. In light of this, we proposed a model (SHRM—layout). We offer recommendations for the managing the hospital sector to implement these practices and influence others to maximise sustainable performance from the findings. The framework acts as a guide to organisations for incorporating sustainability practices in their management development plans.

Decadal Evolution of Ice‐Ocean Interactions at a Large East Greenland Glacier Resolved at Fjord Scale With Downscaled Ocean Models and Observations

AbstractIn recent decades, the Greenland ice sheet has been losing mass through glacier retreat and ice flow acceleration. This mass loss is linked with variations in submarine melt, yet existing ocean models are either coarse global simulations focused on decadal‐scale variability or fine‐scale simulations for process‐based investigations. Here, we unite these scales with a framework to downscale from a global state estimate (15 km) into a regional model (3 km) that resolves circulation on the continental shelf. We further downscale into a fjord‐scale model (500 m) that resolves circulation inside fjords and quantifies melt. We demonstrate this approach in Scoresby Sund, East Greenland, and find that interannual variations in submarine melt at Daugaard‐Jensen glacier induced by ocean temperature variability are consistent with the decadal changes in glacier ice dynamics. This study provides a framework by which coarse‐resolution models can be refined to quantify glacier submarine melt for future ice sheet projections.

Classifying and quantifying decadal changes in wet deposition over Southeast and East Asia using EANET, OMI, and GPCP

South East and East Asia are regions which have undergone rapid economic development, contributing a significant amount of urban and biomass burning emissions. While the connections between emissions, deposition, and impacts on the Earth System are theoretically understood, they are observationally and ill-constrained, especially with respect to the effects of a changing climate and the Monsoon. This work shows the results of a new classification scheme and Asian-Wide monthly wet deposition product based upon 16 years of surface wet deposition observations and remotely sensed trace gas and precipitation measurements throughout South East and East Asia. Specific information corresponding to underlying driving and physical processes including in-situ processing, long-range transport, and local emission sources are all considered. Scientific findings are made specifically with respect to the increased impacts of urban-scale change, long-range transport, and enhanced deposition under moderate to low precipitation conditions. Previously accepted definitions of clean and polluted areas are challenged and updated based upon more detailed analysis of the observed physical and chemical relationships and simple models. The spatial and temporal distribution of the resulting modeled wet deposition is shown to impact the oceans more significantly, and regions of land not previously thought to be heavily impacted.

Confirmation – a Space for Human and Divine Action. Traditional Ritual in the Process of Changes in Secular Czechia

Abstract Work with confirmands and the concept of confirmation have undergone a number of changes in recent decades. This study explores the changes that have taken place in the largest Protestant church in Czechia, the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. With the help of empirical research, it attempts to trace general trends and confronts them with the proposal of a new confirmation liturgy of the ECCB (2023), current theories of confirmation, and the results of European research on confirmation. It concludes by showing the difficulties inherent in trying to reduce confirmation to one core meaning, and recommends that a balance is sought between the subjective and objective as well as theological and anthropological dimensions. Confirmation is both an opportunity to accompany adolescents with intercession and blessing on the journey of faith that began with baptism, and a space where they can respond to it and assume their own religious responsibility.
