Lions, leopards and muskoxen: a (very) light-hearted look at the ups, downs, ins and outs of a postdoctoral career through the eyes of two zoologists

This paper arose out of a seminar series for the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales' 2006 student forum and workshop, “From the Horse's Mouth: Career Insights from Working Zoologists”.The paper is aimed mainly at honours and postgraduate zoologists, and describes our experiences as postdoctoral researchers, including what postdoctoral research is, how we got to be there (a PhD is essential), whether it was what we hoped it would be (a resounding yes), a brief summary of some postdoctoral highlights (MWH researched lions in Africa and AM muskoxen in Alaska), and of course some lowlights (low income, short-term positions and a lack of employment security). We follow up with a few recommendations on how to attain the lofty heights of a postdoctoral research scientist.

ARE CAREER CENTERS WORTHWHILE? A PROGRAM EVALUATION OF A PUBLIC AGENCY CAREER CENTER.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of career centers by looking at an example of a career center program in a Public Agency. The program consists primarily of two career centers stocked with resource materials. The two centers are located, one in each major city in which Public Agency has offices. A post-test, in the form of an employee survey, was administered to users and nonusers of the career center program, obtaining a response rate of 18.67 % (n = 699). A majority of the respondents viewed lack of awareness, time constraints, and low supervisory support as important barriers to accessing the career center program. Both users and nonusers viewed the program as an important demonstration of management's commitment to employee development. Usage of the career centers was associated with higher career insight and career resilience. Thus, the career center program appears to encourage perceptions of managerial commitment and to be an effective tool in employee career development.

Changes in social support for professional development and retirement preparation as a function of age

Social factors, particularly age norms, are cited as a major influence on retirement and late career decisions; yet research has focused primarily on one feature of norms: shared beliefs. A sample of finance and accounting professionals between the ages of 22 and 70 is used to examine whether support for career development differs as a function of age. The levels of support for professional development, retirement preparation, and personal growth from five sources (family, co-workers, colleagues in other organizations, supervisor, and friends) are examined. Age is not a major factor in the amount of support reported. Support is associated with career-related intentions and beliefs (maintaining professional contacts, hours spent in training, career insight, expected development, and perceived organization support). Family support influences career development. These effects hold regardless of age. The results suggest emphasizing the informational role of social networks rather than the normative role with respect to age.

The relationship between employees' inter‐organizational career orientation and their career strategies

PurposeThe present study has two purposes. One is to investigate the relationship between an Inter‐Organizational Career Orientation (IOCO) of employees and their career strategies. The second is to investigate the effects of the career attitudes that an IOCO has on employee career strategies.Design/methodology/approachThe facts and conclusions presented in this paper were obtained from a study of 365 employees from 16 companies. A multiple regression analysis was adopted for testing hypotheses.FindingsWith regard to the first objective, it was determined that IOCO has a positive effect on inter‐organizational career strategies (career exploration) and a negative one on organizational career strategies (self‐nomination). With regard to the second objective, the moderating effects of career attitudes toward the relationships described as follows became clear: job involvement of employees with regard to the relationship between IOCO and creating career opportunities; job involvement of employees with regard to the relationship between IOCO and self‐nomination; job involvement of employees with regard to the relationship between IOCO and career insight; and career goal commitment of employees with regard to the relationship between IOCO and challenging work behavior.Research limitations/implicationsAn analysis according to demographic factors and the implementation of longitudinal research are suggested as future research subjects.Originality/valueThis paper showed that IOCO contributed not only to the rejection of organizational career strategies but also to that of organizational and inter‐organizational career strategies. “Domain fit hypothesis” was verified in new organizational behavioral concepts between career orientation and a career strategy.

An Evaluation of a Pilot Service‐Learning Course for Criminal Justice Undergraduate Students*

This article focuses on a pilot service‐learning program implemented with undergraduate students enrolled in a juvenile delinquency course. An evaluation of the service‐learning program on students’ attitudes toward diversity, interpersonal skills, personal and intellectual development, and citizenship behavior using qualitative analysis is presented. The results indicate that the majority of students came to view the youth in a positive light, reported learning how to work with youth, experienced a reduction in stereotypes, gained career insights, learned how to apply academic theory to real‐life experiences and developed attitudes about how society addresses delinquency that were sympathetic to the youths’ condition. *We are indebted to our partners David Rogers, program director of the detention center, and Robert Henderson and David Daniels, probation supervisors, who served as the on‐site managers and facilitators, for their dedication and commitment to the program.
