Geothermal energy is an attractive alternative to fossil fuels because it is sustainable, supplied continuously, and has a minimal carbon footprint. Where subsurface temperatures are significantly warmer than surface temperatures, heat from the subsurface can be extracted for use on the earth's surface. In some areas, water carries heat to the surface in the form of thermal springs that support recreation and tourism. An unanswered question is whether larger scale geothermal development will lead to cooling of the recreational thermal springs or a reduction in flow rate, negatively impacting the industry. This work uses groundwater flow and heat transport modeling to evaluate the potential impact of geothermal energy production on hot springs. The modeled system is loosely based on the geologic and thermal regimes near Mt. Princeton in central Colorado, USA. The results show that the extraction of deep thermal water for geothermal energy production and the subsequent reinjection of cooled water has the potential to reduce the water temperature of surface springs.

Electrochemical cathodic reductions offer promising approaches for the green synthesis of value-added chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ammonia (NH3). Compared with traditional processes, the decentralized electro-synthesis enables on-site production with minimal carbon footprint. In these systems, cathodic catalysts critically govern the overall activity and selectivity of these multi-step reactions. Among the various reported catalysts, carbon-based metal-free electrocatalysts (C-MFECs) have attracted extensive attention, owing to their high conductivity, structural tunability, chemical stability, and eco-friendliness. Given the shared principles in material design and synthesis, this review systematically summarizes recent advances in C-MFECs for H2O2 and NH3 electro-synthesis via oxygen, nitrogen, and nitrate reduction reactions. Special focus is placed on the design strategies for C-MFECs, demonstrating universal understandings of non-metal doping and defect construction in these important reactions. In addition, innovations in electrode architecture and reactor configuration are highlighted to address challenges in achieving high current densities and efficient product separation. Finally, major challenges and perspectives specific to C-MFECs in oxygen, nitrogen, and nitrate electroreductions are highlighted to inform future advances in H2O2 and NH3 electro-synthesis.

The rapid transition toward cleaner energy requires microgrid models that are not only technically feasible but also economically and environmentally compelling for local contexts. This work develops and evaluates a hybrid renewable microgrid tailored for a residential building in Nazipur, Patnitala Thana, Naogaon District, Bangladesh. Using HOMER Pro (v3.14.2), the system integrates solar photovoltaic (PV), wind turbines (WT), an electrolyzer-hydrogen tank-fuel cell chain ("power-to-gas-to-power"), and a grid connection. The optimized design achieves a remarkably low cost of energy (COE) $0.0396/kWh and a net present cost (NPC) of $145,664 with minimal annual operating expenses ($1,100). The total carbon footprint is limited to 11,158kg/yr, reflecting a 95.8% reduction compared with conventional supply, while hydrogen is generated at $3.32/kg, reinforcing its role as a viable long-term storage medium. Beyond techno-economics, the study examines system stability through dynamic voltage and frequency response modelling in MATLAB, and explores resilience under uncertainty via sensitivity analysis of solar radiation, wind speed, hub height, temperature, and financial variables. The findings highlight that integrating hydrogen into renewable-based microgrids offers a scalable pathway for decarbonizing residential sectors in Bangladesh and similar developing regions. This research thus advances the discourse on hydrogen-augmented microgrids, underscoring their potential to bridge the gap between sustainability targets and local energy security. This study uniquely integrates a correlation-based sensitivity analysis with MATLAB dynamic validation to establish the reliability and feasibility of a hydrogen-augmented hybrid microgrid for residential applications.
