Removal of carbendazim by sorption onto a continuous fixed bed hybrid filter of calcined clay and waste derived biochar

This study focused on enhanced Carbendazim (CBZ) removal by using dual filter media of calcined clay (CC) and biochar (WB-BC) in a continuous fixed-bed column. The experiments were carried out using synthetic and real water. In the continuous system with an initial CBZ concentration of 0.2 mmol L−1, a flow rate of 4 mL min−1, a bed depth of biochar 1 cm and a pH of 6.8, the optimal values for the mass transfer zone (0.64 cm) and adsorption capacity (0.38mmolg−1) were observed. Furthermore it was observed that the dual filter media of WB-BC and CC effectively adsorbs CBZ from real water matrix, with an average adsorption capacity of 0.33mmolg−1. Significant reduction in the concentrations of chlorides, sulfates, nitrates, Ca2+, and Mg2+ were also observed in real water samples along with CBZ removal. Analysis using mass-transfer models showed that BDST model effectively described the breakthrough curve data. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed that WB-BC exhibits a stronger interaction and higher adsorption capacity for CBZ compared to CC as evidenced by a shorter vertical distance (2.711 Å) and higher adsorption energy value (−42.95kJmol−1) in case of WB-BC-CBZ complex. Additionally, the larger band gap (ΔE) value (2.881 eV) for WB-BC-CBZ complex indicates superior structural stability and chemical hardness.

Efficient Preparation of S-Scheme Ag/AgBr/BiOBr Heterojunction Photocatalysts and Implications for Degradation of Carbendazim: Mechanism, Pathway, and Toxicology.

Carbendazim (CBZ), as a highly effective benzimidazole fungicide, has a good control effect on various crops caused by fungi. However, excessive use of CBZ in water, atmosphere, soil, and crops has serious effects. The efficient degradation of CBZ is an effective way to reduce its toxic effect. In this work, the type of S-scheme Ag/AgBr/BiOBr heterojunction photocatalyst was effectively prepared by a simple one-step solvothermal in situ method and first applied to the mineralization and degradation of CBZ. The effects of the molar ratio of AgBr to BiOBr, catalyst dosage, CBZ concentration, pH value of the original solution, and inorganic salt ions on the photocatalytic degradation performance of CBZ were comprehensively studied. The results showed that, under visible light irradiation, 0.9-Ag/AgBr/BiOBr (0.9-AAB) exhibited the best photocatalytic degradation performance (88.9%) against the concentration at 10 mg/L of CBZ in original solutions with pH of 10. However, the degradation effect was also good at pH 7. After 90 min, the degradation efficiency reached 86.0%, corresponding to a TOC removal efficiency of 84.0%. The results indicate that the main active species are 1O2 and •O2- free radicals according to the free radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectra. Combined with the XPS characterization results, the electron transfer mechanism of the S-scheme heterojunction was deeply revealed. Additionally, the degradation pathway of CBZ was proposed through both the intermediate identification and the theoretical calculation derived from the DFT Fukui index. Finally, the toxicity of CBZ and the degradation intermediates were predicted based on the T.E.S.T.

Aquatic hazard and risk posed by four pesticides detected in waterways discharging to the Great Barrier Reef, Australia: Part 2. Hazard and risk assessment

Pesticide active ingredients (PAIs) are regularly detected in the rivers, creeks, wetlands, and inshore waterways that discharge to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) lagoon. Pesticide active ingredients detected above ecologically protective concentrations may pose a hazard and risk to aquatic species. The ability to assess this hazard and risk is reliant on the availability of water quality guidelines, which are only available for a limited number of PAIs detected in GBR catchment waterways. Unendorsed guideline values, known as ecotoxicity threshold values (ETVs) were developed in part one of this study for active ingredients in two fungicides (4-hydroxychlorothalonil (fungicide degradate) and carbendazim) and two insecticides (dimethoate and methoxyfenozide) that are commonly detected in GBR catchment waterways. In the current study, the hazard and risk posed by these PAIs was assessed by comparing the ETVs to environmental monitoring data from the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Loads Monitoring Program. Exceedances of the concentrations that should protect 99 % of aquatic species (i.e., PC99) were observed for all four pesticides. Detected concentrations of 4-hydroxychlorothalonil, carbendazim and methoxyfenozide exceeded the PC95 ETV, however no exceedances of the PC95 were observed for dimethoate. The hazard quotient (HQ) method was used to identify high hazard sites across the GBR catchment area. In total, six sites were identified as having concentrations that exceeded the PC95 ETVs. For 4-hydroxychlorothalonil, the risk to aquatic species based on the 95th percentile concentrations ranged from 3 to 13 %, 1 to 8 % for carbendazim and 2 to 8 % for methoxyfenozide. Detected concentrations of carbendazim were two orders of magnitude higher than concentrations that are reported to induce behavioural effects in some fish species. Considering that detected concentrations of three of the four PAIs individually pose a potential risk to aquatic species, their contributions to pesticide mixture toxicity should be further assessed.

Species specific kinetics of imidacloprid and carbendazim in mouse and rat and consequences for biomonitoring

This study aimed to develop physiologically based kinetic (PBK) models to predict the blood concentrations of imidacloprid and carbendazim and their primary metabolites 5-hydroxy-imidacloprid and 2-aminobenzimidazole after single or repeated oral exposure in mouse (Mus musculus), and compare this to corresponding kinetic data in rat (Rattus norvegicus). PBK model constants for conversion of imidacloprid and carbendazim and formation and clearance of their selected primary metabolites were quantified by in vitro mouse liver microsomal and S9 incubations. The performance of the newly developed PBK models was evaluated, based on a comparison to available literature data, showing that the models performed well. Predictions made were also compared to results from PBK model simulations for rats reported previously to obtain insight in species dependent differences in kinetics of these pesticides. The results thus obtained revealed substantial species differences in kinetics for these two pesticides between mouse and rat, especially for imidacloprid and to a lesser extent for carbendazim. Repeated dose PBK model simulations revealed that the models can facilitate estimation of external exposure levels under wildlife conditions based on internal blood concentrations of the parent compound. The rate of conversion and liver volume fraction were shown to influence the accuracy of these predictions with lower values providing less variable outcomes. It is concluded that PBK modeling provides a new approach methodology of use for wildlife biomonitoring studies and that results of the present study facilitate benchmarking of the species and compounds for which kinetics enable this with sufficient accuracy.

Advanced electrochemical detection of carbendazim in staple food samples using cobalt hydroxide/titanium dioxide nanocomposite

This research introduces a novel composite material, cobalt hydroxide/titanium dioxide (Co(OH)2/TiO2), engineered for the detection of the fungicide carbendazim (CBZ) in environmental samples. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with Co(OH)2/TiO2 to create an electrochemical sensor capable of highly sensitive CBZ detection. Differential pulse voltammetry was utilized to quantify various CBZ concentrations, revealing that the Co(OH)2/TiO2-GCE sensor provided robust response signals across a concentration range from 0.039 μM to 2630.1 μM, with a detection limit of 0.007 μM. The sensor demonstrated notable stability, reproducibility, and selectivity towards CBZ, attributable to the synergistic effects of Co(OH)2/TiO2. Additionally, the Co(OH)2/TiO2-GCE sensor proved effective for analyzing CBZ in fruit and vegetable samples. Thus, this sensor presents significant potential for widespread application in environmental monitoring and food safety assessments.

Metabolomic profiling of in vitro and in situ grown Nilgiris tea reveals unique signatures for breeding decaffeinated varieties

This study was begun by establishing an in vitro culture in UPASI 9, a Nilgiris tea clone (Camellia sinensis) by optimising various factors. Anatomical studies demonstrated that use of lower carbendazim concentration for sterilisation (0.2%) produced viable and healthy explants for callus initiation. To confirm the genetic consistency of the regenerated plants, gene-specific SSR markers were developed and utilised. GC-MS was employed to analyse volatile metabolites extracted from callus, stem, micro shoots, and leaves of the UPASI 9 tea genotype. The results revealed distinct compositions of metabolites in each sample. More interestingly, caffeine was exclusively detected in leaf samples but absent in all other investigated tissues, despite the presence of Tea Caffeine Synthase (TCS) gene-specific SSRs. Thus, this study provided unique information on the absence of caffeine in in vitro grown Nilgiris tea clone, UPASI 9, as decaffeinated tea has a unique niche in the global market.

Advanced Electrochemical Monitoring of Carbendazim Fungicide in Foods Using Interfacial Superassembly of NRPC/NiMn Frameworks.

A simple, sensitive and reliable sensing system based on nitrogen-rich porous carbon (NRPC) and transition metals, NRPC/Ni, NRPC/Mn and NRPC/NiMn was developed and successfully applied as electrode materials for the quantitative determination of carbendazim (CBZ). The synergistic effect of NRPC and bimetals with acceptable pore structure together with flower-like morphology resulted in producing a highly conductive and interconnected network in NRPC/NiMn@GCE, which significantly enhanced the detection performance of CBZ. The electrochemical behavior investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed improved CBZ detection for NRPC/NiMn, due to the controlled adsorption/diffusion process of CBZ by the NRPC/NiMn@GCE electrode. The influences of various factors such as pH, NRPC/NiMn concentration, CBZ concentration and scan rate were studied. Under optimal conditions, 0.1 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) with a pH of 7.0 containing 30 µg/mL NRPC/NiMn, a favourable linear range detection of CBZ from 5 to 50 µM was obtained. Moreover, a chronoamperometric analysis showed excellent repeatability, reproducibility and anti-interfering ability of the fabricated NRPC/NiMn@GCE sensor. Furthermore, the sensor showed satisfactory results for CBZ detection in real samples with acceptable recoveries of 96.40-104.98% and low RSD values of 0.25-3.45%.

Nano-eco catalysis: carbendazim degradation by engineered BiVO4 nanoparticles

This study utilized the solvothermal approach for the effective synthesis of BiVO4 nanoparticles. Morphological examination of BiVO4 was conducted via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the elemental composition was determined using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The crystallinity and functional groups were assessed through x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively.The synthesized material’s efficacy in UV-induced breakdown of carbendazim was investigated. The study explored various factors affecting the photodegradation process, including radiation duration, initial concentration of carbendazim, catalyst dosage, and catalyst regeneration. Interesingly, 97% degradation of carbendazim was observed at optimized conditions. These results emphasise the potential of BiVO4 nanoparticles as catalysts for environmental remediation applications, especially in the degradation of harmful contaminants.

Synthesis of Carbon Dots from Peltophorum Pterocarpum Flowers for Selective Fluorescence Detection of Carbendazim.

In this study, carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized from Peltophorum pterocarpum flowers as the precursor material using the hydrothermal method. The fluorescence emission spectra of the resulting Peltophorum pterocarpum CDs (PP-CDs) exhibited excitation-independent behavior, showing the fluorescence emission peak at 410 nm when excited at 330 nm. This method is simple, rapid and well consistent with the green chemistry and sustainable analytical method development. The as-synthesized PP-CDs acted as a promising fluorescent probe for detecting carbendazim (CBZ) via aggregation-induced emission mechanism, showing a linear response to CBZ concentrations ranging from 1 to 30 μM, with a detection limit of 5.41 nM. This method was successfully applied to quantify CBZ in food samples, achieving excellent recoveries of 99% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 2%.

The investigation of the interaction determination between carbendazim and elastase, using both in vitro and in silico methods

Pesticides, including fungicides, are one of the important groups of environmental toxins that affect human and animal health. Studies have shown that these compounds are considered chemical pollutants. Carbendazim is a systemic fungicide. Unfortunately, excessive use of carbendazim has caused environmental pollution all over the world. In this study, the effect of carbendazim on the enzyme elastase (secreted from the endocrine gland of the pancreas) has been investigated. In a study, the performance and reaction of carbendazim with elastase were investigated using spectroscopic techniques. The stability and structure of elastase enzymes were studied under the influence of carbendazim. The results of fluorescence emission and UV–visible absorption spectrum showed that in the presence of carbendazim, there is an increase in UV–Vis absorption and a decrease in the intensity of the intrinsic fluorescence emission in the protein spectrum. Additionally, a decrease in the thermal stability of elastase was observed in the presence of carbendazim. The stability and structure of elastase enzyme were investigated in the presence of carbendazim. The results revealed that the UV–Vis absorption increased due to the presence of carbendazim, as indicated by the hyperchromic spectrum at 220 and 280 nm peaks. Additionally, the intrinsic fluorescence emission in the protein spectrum decreased with increasing carbendazim concentration at three different temperatures (298, 303, and 313 K). Moreover, the study demonstrated that the TM decreased from 2.59 to 4.58 with the increase of carbendazim, suggesting a decrease in the stability of the elastase structure in response to the elevated carbendazim concentration. According to the results of the research, the interaction between elastase and carbendazim has occurred, and changes have been made in the enzyme under the influence of carbendazim. The formation of the complex between elastase and carbendazim was consistent with the results obtained from molecular simulation and confirmed the thermodynamic data.

In vitro immunotoxicity effects of carbendazim were inhibited by n-acetylcysteine in microglial BV-2 cells

Carbendazim (CBZ) is a benzimidazole fungicide widely used worldwide in industrial, agricultural, and veterinary practices. Although, CBZ was found in all brain tissues causing serious neurotoxicity, its impact on brain immune cells remain scarcely understood. Our study investigated the in vitro effects of CBZ on activated microglial BV-2 cells. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 cells were exposed to increasing concentrations of CBZ and cytokine release was measured by ELISA, and Cytometric Bead Array (CBA) assays. Mitochondrial superoxide anion (O2·-) generation was evaluated by Dihydroethidium (DHE) and nitric oxide (NO) was assessed by Griess reagent. Lipid peroxidation was evaluated by measuring the malonaldehyde (MDA) levels. The transmembrane mitochondrial potential (ΔΨm) was detected by cytometry analysis with dihexyloxacarbocyanine iodide (DiOC6(3)) assay. CBZ concentration-dependently increased IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and MCP-1 by LPS-activated BV-2 cells. CBZ significantly promoted oxidative stress by increasing NO, O2·- generation, and MDA levels. In contrast, CBZ significantly decreased ΔΨm. Pre-treatment of BV-2 cells with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) reversed all the above mentioned immunotoxic parameters, suggesting a potential protective role of NAC against CBZ-induced immunotoxicity via its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on activated BV-2 cells. Therefore, microglial proinflammatory over-activation by CBZ may be a potential mechanism by which CBZ could induce neurotoxicity and neurodegenerative disorders.

Fluorescence spectroscopy detection of carbendazim residue in cucumber juice based on BC

Excessive residues of the carbendazim pesticide in food will cause food safety issues. Particularly, cucumber is one of the common vegetables with carbendazim residues. This study, using fluorescence spectroscopy technology, explored the residues of carbendazim in cucumbers. First, a fluorescence spectrophotometer was used to scan and obtain the three-dimensional fluorescence spectra of carbendazim standard and four carbendazim formulations. Analyzing and comparing their respective fluorescence characteristics, fluorescence peak 1: Ex/Em=245/300–320 nm and fluorescence peak 2: Ex/Em=280/300–320 nm have been identified as the fluorescence characteristic peaks of carbendazim, and the optimal excitation wavelengths Ex=245 nm and Ex=280 nm with carbendazim specificity was screened. Subsequently, two-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy was performed on the carbendazim and cucumber-carbendazim mixed solutions using the optimal excitation wavelength. In order to obtain more effective two-dimensional spectral data, the original fluorescence spectrum of the cucumber-carbendazim mixed solution was subjected to Blank Correction (BC), significantly reducing the impact of cucumber's own fluorescent characteristics on the carbendazim fluorescent peak in the mixed solution. Polynomial models and linear prediction models were developed based on the concentration of carbendazim and the fluorescence peak intensity values obtained after BC. The detection limit value of carbendazim residues in the cucumber-carbendazim mixed system included the maximum pesticide residue limit specified by national food safety regulations. This research provides valuable data and technical support for efficient detection of pesticide residues in cucumbers.

Simple Fabrication of Mesoporous Praseodymium Cerate via an Eco-Friendly Route for Development of Carbendazim Electrochemical Sensor

This study introduces an easy and efficient ultrasonic-assisted approach for the preparation of mesoporous praseodymium cerate (MS-Pr2Ce2O7) by employing maltose as a novel and eco-friendly capping agent. Some techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for the characterization of nanoparticles. For the detection of carbendazim (CBZ), a new electrochemical sensor based on the modified screen-printed electrode (SPE) has been presented. The modification of the electrode surface was made using praseodymium cerate. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) has been utilized to study the electrochemical behavior of the MS-Pr2Ce2O7/SPE and better electrochemical performance was observed compared to bare SPE for the oxidation of CBZ. The optimization of pH and accumulation time was done. Under optimized conditions (pH = 7 and accumulation time:160 s), the oxidation peak currents that responded to CBZ concentration between 0.01 and 175.0 μM exhibited a linear relationship (R2 = 0.9977), and the detection limit was calculated 4.6 nM. In addition, MS-Pr2Ce2O7/SPE showed high stability and repeatability. At last, real sample tests of the MS-Pr2Ce2O7/SPE were validated by applying them to the detection of CBZ in vegetable samples, which were promising in our preliminary experiments.

Adsorption of the fungicide carbendazim on activated carbon: analysis of isotherms, kinetics, rapid small-scale column tests, and impacts of the presence of organic matter

Abstract The adsorption of the fungicide carbendazim (CBZ) on granular activated carbon (GAC) made from bovine bone was investigated in deionized water (DW) and DW with the addition of natural organic matter (DWNOM). The study included tests of isotherms, kinetics, and rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCT). The Freundlich model represented better the adsorption of the fungicide in both matrices, while the pseudo-second-order model fitted better in DW. The isotherm and kinetic studies showed the interference of NOM in the adsorption of CBZ through changes in the parameters of the applied models. In RSSCT, the breakthrough time was faster in DWNOM than in DW. Nevertheless, the CBZ concentrations of both matrices were considered statistically similar for most contact times in RSSCT. In the fixed-bed experiments, the organic matter did not cause significant changes in the adsorption of CBZ in GAC. The NOM presence may have improved the efficiency of GAC in adsorbing CBZ in kinetic and RSSCT tests. There is no knowledge of a similar approach to studying the adsorption of CBZ on GAC in Brazil, mainly using fixed-bed studies. In this way, the present work contributes to a better understanding of the adsorption of carbendazim through the methods used.

Label-free, liquid crystal-based aptasensor for detecting carbendazim at picomolar levels

We describe a simple and sensitive liquid–crystal (LC)-based method for quantifying carbendazim (CBZ) by exploiting aptamer-specific recognition at the aqueous-LC interface. The method relies on the interfacial interaction between an aptamer and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB); this interaction varies depending on the amount of CBZ. In the absence of CBZ, the aptamer disrupts the CTAB monolayer through electrostatic attraction, leading to a transition from homeotropic to tilted ordering of the LCs. As CBZ concentrations rise, the formation of aptamer-CBZ complexes increases, preserving the vertical alignment of the LCs by reducing collapse of the CTAB layer caused by electrostatic interactions. Using these methods, we achieved a CBZ detection limit of 3.12 pM (0.000597 μg/L) over a linear range of 0.05–5 nM. Moreover, we quantified CBZ levels in peach, soil, and tap water samples. Our LC-based detection method has significant research potential, offering sensitive, and straightforward detection of CBZ.

Fabrication of novel Ag3PO4/LiFe5O8 nanocomposites for dual applications in sustainable photocatalytic removal of harmful antibiotics and ratiometric electrochemical detection of hazardous carbendazim insecticide

Herein, for the first time bi-functional magnetic nanocomposites based on Ag3PO4 (SP) and LiFe5O8 (LF) were prepared with different ratio of LF (xLFSP, x = 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt% of LF) and synergy between the individual components of the nanocomposite were studied for dual applications. Different analytical techniques were employed to examine the physicochemical features of the synthesized materials. In the presence of H2O2 and visible light, 10LFSP nanocomposite possess superior photocatalytic activity towards levofloxacin (LFX, 98% removal) and tetracycline (TC, 95% removal) drugs. Further, 10LFSP was employed to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and fabricate a ratiometric electrochemical sensor for the detection of the pernicious insecticide carbendazim (CBM). Under optimized conditions, ratiometric signal is linear to the CBM concentration in the range of 0.05 to 10 μM with a detection limit of 20 nM. Moreover, the proposed sensor 10LFSP/GCE was successfully validated in the detection of CBM in real water samples. Thus, the present work provides a venue for the design of multifunctional nanomaterial that could solve the dual purpose of detection and removal of water contaminants.

Simultaneous detection of acetamiprid and carbendazim based on Raman-silent spectral window tags-mediated surface-enhanced Raman scattering aptasensor coupled with magnetic separation

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely used for detecting pesticide residues. Nevertheless, the spectral interference of sample matrix still exists, and the simultaneous detection of multiple pesticides is challenging. In this work, specific simultaneous detection of acetamiprid (ACE) and carbendazim (CBZ) in complex sample matrix was achieved by using two Raman tag molecules (prussian blue, PB; 4-(mercaptomethyl) benzonitrile, MBN) whose peaks were in the Raman-silent spectral window. Two Raman nanoprobes were synthesized by adding MBN and PB into the Au and Ag core-shell gap and coupled with two complementary DNA (cDNA), respectively. Meanwhile, two aptamer-incubated Fe3O4/Au nanoparticles were used as capture molecules. Results showed that the Raman intensity at 2077 cm−1 and 2228 cm−1 had an inverse tendency with ACE and CBZ concentrations, respectively. Under the optimal conditions of aptamer, cDNA concentration, and reaction volume ratio, the SERS aptasensor showed a wide linear range of 0.01 ∼ 1 mg/kg with limit of detection of 9.43 μg/kg to ACE and 9.17 μg/kg to CBZ. The result of recovery experiment showed that there was no significant difference between SERS method and HPLC method (p > 0.05). It turned out that the SERS aptasensor had a good resistance to spectral interference of matrix and easy separation, which can specifically detect ACE and CBZ in complex matrix simultaneously. SERS combined with nano-sensor elements will be conducive to the on-site detection of various hazardous substances in food safety.

Efficiency of TiO2 particle-coated filter using different binders in carbendazim degradation from Chinese chives.

Dip-coating TiO2 (Degussa P25) onto the glass-fiber pre-filter using different binders (PEG1000, 2000, 4000, 6000, and Duramax B1000) for carbendazim degradation in Chinese chives was studied. To investigate the effects of binder types, TiO2 concentration was fixed at 1 % w/v, and amounts of binders were varied in a range of 0.3 to 1 wt% based on the TiO2 content. Then, effects of TiO2 and binder concentrations were further studied on the most effective binder type (PEG6000). It was revealed that 2 wt% of PEG6000 yielded the highest carbendazim degradation efficiency. The efficiency increased with the increased concentration of TiO2. At the best condition of coating, i.e., 1-1.5 % w/v of TiO2 and 2 wt% of PEG6000, more than 90% degradation efficiency was obtained although the initial carbendazim concentration in the chives was as high as 168.4 mg/kg.

A dual action electrochemical molecularly imprinted aptasensor for ultra-trace detection of carbendazim

Carbendazim is often used in agriculture to prevent crop diseases, even though it has been associated with health concerns. To ensure the safety of food products and comply with environmental regulations, an ultrasensitive method for carbendazim determination must be developed. In this study, a new electrochemical molecularly imprinted polymer-aptasensor based on hemin-Al-metal organic framework@gold nanoparticles (H-Al-MOF@AuNPs) was developed for sensitive and selective carbendazim detection. Hemin linked to the surface of the Al-metal organic framework also possesses outstanding peroxidase-like qualities that can electrocatalyse the reduction of H2O2. Thus, H-Al-MOF functions as an in-situ probe. Additionally, AuNPs offer many binding sites to load carbendazim aptamers and create an imprinted polymer-aptasensing interface. Dopamine is the chemical functional monomer in the electropolymerised film, while carbendazim is the template molecule. Thus, compared to the molecularly imprinted polymer or aptasensor alone, the molecularly imprinted polymer-aptasensor showed greater selectivity due to the synergistic action of the polymer and carbendazim aptamer towards carbendazim. A decrease in peak current was observed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and chronoamperometry (CA) as the concentration of carbendazim increased. This possibly resulted from carbendazim connecting to the carbendazim aptamer and simultaneously blocking the imprinted polymer cavities on the surface of the modified electrode, which reduced the transfer of electrons. Signals were observed for hemin DPV and H2O2 catalytic reduction CA. DPV and CA showed that the linear ranges for carbendazim were 0.3 fmol L-1-10 pmol L-1 and 0.7 fmol L-1-10 pmol L-1, respectively, with limits of detection of 80 and 300 amol L-1. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained with tap water, apple juice, and tomato juice samples, demonstrating that the proposed sensor has potential for food and environmental analysis.

Selective and sensitive colorimetric detection of endocrine disrupter fungicide carbendazim through secnidazole capped silver nanoparticles

Pesticides and fungicides are extremely useful to hinder the attacks of pests and fungi to secure crops, vegetables, fruits and other plants but due to their endocrine disrupting and carcinogenic risks in humans and animals through their continued addition in water resources they are extremely important to monitor carefully. In this investigation we synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via the reducing action of sodium borohydride in the presence of secnidazole (SEC) as capping agent under various optimized parameters such as the concentration of NaBH4, silver nitrate (AgNO3), SEC and pH. These SEC-AgNPs were characterized through various techniques including ultra-violet visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta-potential analysis (ZPA) in order to investigate their diverse properties. As prepared SEC-AgNPs were proved as extremely sensitive for trace level sensing of fungicide carbendazim (CARB) in the range of 0.5–22 µM with limit of detection (LOD) equal to 0.021 µM and R2 value of 0.9964. SEC-AgNPs were tested for CARB sensing under the presence of several pesticides with negligible interference thus verifying its exclusive selectivity for the targeted analyte. This SEC-AgNPs was further applied to find out the concentration of CARB in real samples of tap water and human blood plasma with reference to standard addition method.
