Indigenous Economic and Human Development in Northern Australia

Don Fuller and Eileen Cummings argue that in Australia the destruction of the previously productive Indigenous economic system has led, since the 1970s in particular, to a dependence on government services and programmes. A number of researchers and practitioners have begun to question the implications of such dependence for the economic and human condition of Indigenous Australians. The authors maintain that a higher degree of economic equality needs to be achieved before many of the severe social problems, which also confront Indigenous Australians, can be properly addressed. An important constraint to improved economic equality lies in the unacceptably low educational outcomes and opportunities for business skills development for Indigenous Australians.

Narrowing Skill Development Gaps in Marketing and MBA Programs: The Role of Innovative Technologies for Distance Learning

Increasingly, universities are offering a marketing education to a diverse, international student population through formats including both full-time and distance-learning MBA programs. At the same time, universities are increasing their reliance on technology innovations to enhance students’ global learning experience. Ultimately, a key measure of success of such programs and technological approaches is the extent that participant needs for business skill development are being met. This article proposes that the role of technological innovation in facilitating or hindering business skill development in a distance-learning MBA program can be better understood by (1) understanding how and why student needs for marketing and business skill development can differ within and across MBA programs and (2) how technological innovations can contribute to—or potentially limit—the development of specific skills desired by marketing and business students.

Marketing Education in the Year 2000: Changes Observed and Challenges Anticipated

This article reports results of a study undertaken with 107 of the marketing discipline™s most well-regarded educators. Asked to both reflect on the changes they had made over the past 10 years in their teaching and to identify the challenges that await in the new millennium, these faculty provide an insightful picture of the evolving marketing education landscape. Study results indicate that faculty are working harder to develop discussion-oriented class cultures, making increased use of emerging technologies, and placing a greater emphasis on helping students strengthen their communication and decision-making skills than 10 years ago. Asked to identify challenges they see as the year 2000 approaches, respondents noted that the marketing discipline must increase its relevancy and value to students and their prospective employers. Also, marketing educators need to stay in front of technological change and take a true leadership role in helping students develop business skills necessary for success.

Developing Business and Enterprise Skills Through Vocational Training in Schools and FE Institutions: the European model?

Business and enterprise skills are essential for the future economic prosperity of any country, and many schools and colleges of Further Education in the UK run programmes or courses which specifically develop such skills. This article considers the current practices in the training of business awareness in some European countries and discusses an example of good practice — the Young Enterprise Europe scheme. The article concludes that there are a range of different methods for ensuring the development of business skills used within European countries, but there is no standard practice. The article argues that the Young Enterprise Europe programme could be launched throughout Europe to address such educational business development and proposes a model which is adapted from the Personal Effectiveness Model (Fennell, 1994). However, it concedes that further empirical research should be undertaken to draw more reliable conclusions.

Personal and business skills development: A project-based approach at the University of Salford

ABSTRACT An innovatory project-based programme is described which has been developed and refined over a period of 5 years. The programme aims to improve the personal and business skills of students during the second year of one particular undergraduate course at the University of Salford. The vehicle used to develop these skills is a business start-up simulation in which students work in teams. They take part in a range of activities which are related to their business venture. The paper describes the programme objective and methodology, team selection, choice of business venture, the support which is provided, the activities which are involved and assessment. It discusses the numerous modifications that have been made in the light of experience and reflects on a number of issues that arise before going on to consider programme evaluation and transferability. The paper concludes with an examination of programme outcomes.
