“Better red than dead”: Socialism in British Public Schools, 1900–1918

AbstractThis paper examines socialism in Edwardian public schools. It concentrates on understanding their students’ responses to, and conceptions of, socialism’s core tenets. For, existing scholarship has depicted these Edwardian institutions as almost uniformly conservative and proficient in inculcating students with pro‐social hierarchy, anti‐social innovation views. Any ideological tensions, then, stemmed from the interaction of popular, conservative‐compliant, dogmas within school contexts: social Darwinism, imperialism, athleticism, muscular Christianity and so on. This paper, however, draws on new Eton College archive sources to enhance and complicate this view. It argues socialism captivated the students’ attention and garnered a strong supportive minority that, at times, advocated complete collective ownership. Moreover, the school administration showed tolerance to even the most outspoken socialists, and its non‐hegemonic, semi‐decentralized nature gave rise to local, independent sites of support. Accordingly, this research is important to understanding Edwardian public school ideologies and socialization processes. In wider terms, too, it casts insight on Edwardian socialism’s penetration into secondary education and inter‐class acceptance.

The portrayal of Lyme Disease by a Public Service Broadcaster

ABSTRACT Background The tick-borne condition Lyme borreliosis, commonly known as Lyme Disease, is an emerging problem in the U.K. Thus media coverage highlighting clinical features and measures to prevent tick bites is welcome. How well does the news media provide this information? Here, reports from the British Public Service Broadcaster, the BBC, were examined. Methods BBC coverage of Lyme Disease was classed depending on media type as ‘television’, ‘radio’ or ‘web page’. Keywords related to symptoms and prevention techniques were recorded. Images of ticks or the characteristic EM rashes were also noted. Results More reports occurred in the spring and summer months than autumn and winter (Q2, 31.7%: Q3, 29.1%). Early diagnostic features such as a ‘rash’ (53.3%) and reference to tick bites (68.9%) were frequently mentioned. Other symptoms were well covered; including fever or ‘flu-like’ symptoms (43.6%), malaise (35.9%) and joint pain (43.6%). Less often mentioned were focal symptoms; including arthritis (8.7%) or facial palsy (6.7%). Prevention techniques were mentioned in 32% of all media reports, with tick removal (26.2%) and body checking (20.3%) being most often mentioned. Tick images were frequently provided (40.7%), but those of EM rashes less often (16.5%). Conclusion Overall, coverage of early symptoms was high. However, symptoms indicative of later infection were less well covered. Increased use of EM images, and more appropriate tick images, could aid Lyme Disease identification amongst the general public.

“Germany asks: is it OK to laugh at Hitler?”

Abstract Within imagological approaches, paratexts can provide insights into how the Other of translated literature is presented to a new target audience. So, within a transnational context, such as Germany and Britain’s shared experience of the Second World War, can the source and target-culture paratexts invoke the same images? Through a case study of Er ist wieder da, a novel that satirises Germany’s relationship with its National Socialist past, and the British publication of the English translation Look Who’s Back, this article finds that while the novel’s humour is reframed by the British publisher, the novel’s controversial position within Germany’s Vergangenheitsbewältigung discourse remains intrinsic to the paratexts published in the British press. As such, this article demonstrates the transnational relevance of individual national characteristics to the paratextual framing of translated literature, the value of paratexts as objects of imagological study, and the methodological benefits of distinguishing between production- and reception-side paratexts.

Was Culture a Commodity ‘all’ Victorians Could Afford? – Notes on the First British Public Museums

The etymology of mouseion gave rise to the word ‘museum’ and initially referred to the temple of the Muses. It is noteworthy to recall that the first museum was the Alexandria Museum, set up by Ptolemy in 300 B.C., as a temple, a library, an astronomical observatory, an amphitheatre, a botanical garden and a research venue (Anico 105). The outset of museums can be found later on in private collections, which continued until mid-18th century. Additionally, with the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, museums started being regarded as an ally to combat myths, dogmata and superstitions and thus ‘Curiosity Cabinets’ were gradually replaced by the first public museums, such as the Galleria degli Uffizi (1571), in Florence, the British Museum (1753), in London, and the Louvre Museum (1793), in Paris. Simpson (126–127) considers these new cultural spaces as a means for European powers to re-write their history and exhibit their past deeds, as well as a way to show off the heritage they unlawfully gathered in their colonial periods, in line with the 1851 Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations, in London. Taking these assumptions into account, we aim at describing the birth of the first British public museums and the resources they wished to make available to their visitors (e.g. admission fees, facilities, lighting and guides), so as to reflect on the underlying concept of access to culture in Victorian mindset. Was culture a commodity then? In line with Kelly (Culture as Commodity), cultural products and services may have symbolic or even status-symbolic dimensions and this understanding leads us to a further question related to the target audiences of Victorian museums: Were they supposed to be accessible to everyone? Or were they merely for “the initiated” vs. “the primitive” (Chu)?

Turmoil in the Capital: British Publication Alarmed the Hamidian Regime

During the early years of Abdülhamid II’s reign, there were several attempts to reinstate ex-Sultan Murad V to the throne. One of these was the initiative of Ali Suâvi, which has come to be known as the Çırağan Incident. Although the Ottoman press had to be very circumspect in reporting Suâvi’s attempt and its aftermath, the British newspaper of the Ottoman Empire, The Levant Herald, was instead able to carry the news about the incident for several days by framing its reportage in pro-government terms. The situation changed, however, when a letter from a reader praising Ali Suâvi and supporting the claim of Murad V to the throne was published by the paper and spurred the Sublime Porte into action. Although the authorship of the letter remains unknown, it is doubtful that it was actually written by an average reader of the paper; some sources instead point to Cleanthi Scalieri, the Master of the Prodoos Masonic Lodge. After publication, the proprietor of The Levant Herald, Edgar Whitaker, took refuge in the British Embassy, resulting in the confiscation of the printing house and the remaining copies of the newspaper on the order of the Sublime Porte. Whitaker protested that he had informed the Marshal of the Palace, Said Pasha, regarding the letter’s contents, and that he was now the subject of death threats and harassment; Said Pasha responded by denying any knowledge of the matter. The dismissal and exile of Said Pasha brought only further tension. The British Foreign Ministry claiming that the Sublime Porte had acted beyond its jurisdiction according to the capitulations. In the midst of negotiations between the British and Ottoman governments over the transfer of Cyprus, the furor over the letter and the newspaper provoked major discussion in the European press, and caused negative public reaction in Britain towards the actions of the Ottoman government. This article focuses on the anonymous letter published in The Levant Herald, and examines the course of these developments primarily through their representation in the British press.

Publishing in the UK

The UK publishing industry is one of the most powerful in the world. Our intelligence has shown that the global status of the industry is determined by the leadership of the English language in the world stage, heritage, historical ties and the force of copyright law.&#x0D; The article proves that the United Kingdom is a leader in many areas of publishing, such as the publication in English of works from other cultures: African, Caribbean and Indian literature. British publishers are also competitive in areas such as textbooks, various reference books, English Language Guides (ELTs) and textbooks for international schools.&#x0D; An analysis of the Global Publishers' Rating in 2017 showed how British publishing companies are constantly succeeding on the world stage. For example, according to the Global Publishers' Rating in 2017, five British companies earned a quarter of the combined revenue of the world's 50 most powerful firms. (For comparison: eight US publishers together earned 27% and together — more than half.) The printing industry in the UK is large, developed and thriving. The United Kingdom is the fifth largest producer of printed matter in the world, employing around 116 000 people and accounting for £ 5,8 billion in GDP.&#x0D; The performance of the UK book publishing industry is the printing of new titles and new publications. According to this indicator of publishing productivity, the British book industry is a world leader. In 2014, the American book publishing industry estimated that 335 000 new titles and publications were published, followed by China with 448 000, the United Kingdom with 220 000, well ahead of Japan, Germany, and Russia, as well as France, Italy, and Spain. If we use a different method of counting and find out the number of new names printed per million population, it turns out that the UK produces the most new names in the world — more than 2900 per million population against 1000 to 1500 for other large developed markets.&#x0D; An analysis of the book industry in the United Kingdom shows that it is constantly evolving. Modern digital technologies allow publishing companies to reorganize and improve technological processes. New features include: integration with supply chain partners, online distribution, dynamic pricing, on-demand printing, e-book publishing.

A Matter of Public Importance? The ‘Europe Open for Business’ Campaign, British Public Opinion and the Single Market

AbstractThis article offers a historical assessment of the ‘Europe Open for Business’ campaign, launched in 1988 by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government and related to the programme to complete the single market. The campaign, which greatly increased business awareness of the 1992 programme, was a unique propaganda exercise that emphasized the importance that the Conservatives attached to the single market. However, the campaign was undermined by Thatcher's September 1988 Bruges speech. Using contemporary public opinion data related to the single market, the article also argues that it was limited by the decision to target solely a business, rather than a public, audience. Through its assessment of the Europe Open for Business campaign, the article thus contributes to four areas of inquiry: British government propaganda over European integration; Conservative Party European policy; the growing literature on the Bruges speech; and broader debates on the role of publics in the European integration process.

“This unfortunate book”: Bram Stoker and the Edwardian publishing industry

ABSTRACT This article considers the later career of the Irish Gothic author, Bram Stoker (1847–1912), and interrogates the publishing history of his penultimate work, the non-fictional study, Famous Impostors (1910). Making use of the unpublished correspondence of Stoker’s British and US publishers, it charts the development of the work from its inception (where Stoker was actually paid the same amount as his agent), through the period of its writing, when Stoker was seriously ill, to its revision and final publication. To date, Famous Impostors remains probably the least studied of the author’s works. This article will address that gap in critical knowledge, as well as presenting new biographical materials associated with the author and his experience of publishing in the early twentieth century.

Towards a professional identity: Translators in the Victorian publisher’s archive

This essay situates itself at the intersection of book history and translation studies, and inquires how the archive, in this instance, those of British publishers, can help us chart the development of the professional literary translator in the nineteenth century. A key period in print culture, during which many cultural, technological and social shifts occurred, the Victorian era saw the rise of the literary profession, the relevance and impact of which on literary translation can be even better understood in the light of developments in British publishing practices. Using hitherto largely untapped primary sources and uncovering a number of significant processes in the publishing history of literary translation, the discussion offers fresh insights into the production of English-language translations in nineteenth-century Britain. Drawing on the archival records of Richard Bentley’s publishing house, including translators’ correspondence and the contractual agreements that underpinned the production and publication of translations, this study inquires into what may be termed the “proto-professionalization” of literary translators in the nineteenth century.

Continuity and Change in British Public Service Television’s Engagement with Mental Health

This article explores factual television coverage of mental health by British public service broadcasters (PSB) from the post-war period, examining continuity and change by highlighting the range of voices given airtime, the variety of programme formats and stylistic presentation. It argues that British television has had a long commitment to educating the public about mental health, periodically examining mental health policies, and providing air-time for a range of perspectives. In addition, mental health conditions are now featured more widely, however newer factual genres emphasise experiential accounts and self-accountability over critical investigation. By situating televisual representations of mental health within a historical framework of UK broadcasting and mental health policy, it contributes to the history of health and television, demonstrating the ways in which policy, broadcasting practices and cultural constructions of mental health are interrelated.

Narratives on the Beginning of the 1875-1878 Uprising in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the British Public Discourse

: In his noteworthy book Against Massacre, Humanitarian Interventions in the&#x0D; Ottoman Empire 1815-1914 (2012), Davide Rodogno states that even prior to the Eastern&#x0D; Crisis (1875-1878), the Ottoman Empire and Turks had been excluded from civilised&#x0D; states and nations for several reasons (despotism, Islam, polygamy, slavery, impossibility&#x0D; of reformation). Thereby, the Europeans have secured the position of being the only&#x0D; ones determining the standards of civilisation: they decide how, where and when a nonEuropean country will access the family of civilised people. As a supplementary part of&#x0D; orientalism, balkanism and ottomanism, as well as a justification to the implementation of&#x0D; the “western” double standard, it was stereotypical to construct a negative image of Turks&#x0D; that also included Muslims from Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the period of crisis, such was&#x0D; the 1875-1878 Eastern Crisis, the British and other European public and political elite,&#x0D; including Russia, had developed considerable anti-Turkish sentiments. In this paper, I&#x0D; analysed and synthesised discourses about Bosnia and Herzegovina in the British public&#x0D; space, from the beginning of the uprising in 1875, to the anti-Turkish campaign following&#x0D; the Turkish crimes in Bulgaria in May 1876. The discourse on the uprising of the British&#x0D; Consulate in Bosnia and the anti-Ottoman discourse of the British press in relation to&#x0D; the uprising in Bosnia and Herzegovina appeared as especially important. The last one&#x0D; appeared through several narratives: oppression as a way of rule, oppression as the cause&#x0D; of the uprising, oppression and the Turkish crimes over Christians as an argument for a&#x0D; humanitarian intervention and western (Austrian) occupational right.

British Public Opinion Towards the Vietnam War and UK-US Relations During the 1964-70 Labour Governments

The historiography of the 1964-70 Wilson governments has provided in depth analysis of the Vietnam War within the context of transatlantic relations, while other studies have examined the anti-war movement within British society. But there has been relatively little focus on British public opinion towards the Vietnam War and UK-US relations in the 1960s. To address this gap in scholarship, this article undertakes secondary analysis of opinion poll datasets covering the period 1960-69. It provides new insights into the patterning of public opinion. First, it finds that views supportive of the US war effort and of British government policy were more prevalent amongst men, younger people, and Conservative Party voters. Second, critical appraisals of Wilson as prime minister were not linked with a tendency to hold more negative views of the Vietnam War, either within the general public or Labour voters in particular. Third, a strongly favourable climate of opinion towards broader transatlantic relations deteriorated to some extent in the mid-to-late-1960s, and this shift occurred across societal groups, including supporters of the main parties. Growing opposition to the Vietnam War may have contributed to this shift.
