Historiographical Imagination about Savagery and Barbaric Stages of Primitive Human Species

Indeed, Imagination could not work as a valid method for understanding prehistory and pre-historical processes as subjective or objective source. Yet historiographical imagination is only available inductive method for writing prehistory and pre-historical processes. Out of the few significant inherent natural features of the mind of Homo sapiens, a product of evolution memory, imagination, creativity, and power of comprehending complex natural processes are against preceding minds of primitive human species. The naturally evolved primitive human mind also learnt art of making fire, bow and arrows, pottery, stone implements, adobe-brick houses and later plantation by irrigation. The two historical facts transmuted the existing basic instincts making them primitive humans, other than preceding species of humans. 1) The phenomenon of inter-tribal battles, becoming order of the day during savagery because of sneaking clandestinely or openly, from other human tribes women, children, and domestic animals provided four kinds of human in a victorious tribe, “victor male”, “victor female”, “subjugated male” and “subjugated female”, which transfigured the existing sexual behavior in a tribe; and 2) the other phenomenon of “surplus labor” available only to males because of “surplus pregnancy” of females finally became the instigator of distinction between female and male, which in due course during the various stages of savagery and barbarism became susceptible for the origin of patriarchy. The present paper deals with the historiographical imagination as an inductive method for understanding responses of primitive human mind during various stages of savagery and barbarism.

Alberta’s Insurance Amendment Act: Meaningful Change or a Long Arrow with a Short Bow?

A litigator I used to work with had a way with metaphors. He once described a legal argument as being a “long arrow with a really short bow” — the implication being that, while impressive and even intimidating at first instance, the argument really did not “fly” and failed to advance the law in a meaningful way. This description came to mind when the Alberta government announced last year that the major components of the province’s long-awaited Insurance Amendment Act would take effect on 1 July 2012. Are the modifications contained in this statute worth the years of anticipation and consultation, or are the changes implemented by the legislation less significant for insurance contract law than the long reform process would suggest? In other words, does the statutory amendment achieve meaningful change by effectively addressing pressing insurance contract issues, or is this reform just a long arrow with a short bow?

Arrow injuries in North Eastern Nigeria

Background : Arrow injuries are common presentation at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Nguru, North East Nigeria. The injuries are mostly unreported and there is neither a policy nor an action plan to curb their incidence Aim : To establish an accurate data base for this clinical entity in this part of Nigeria and suggest ways to curb it. Methods: A prospective study of all patients presenting with arrow shot injuries at FMC, Nguru, from January 2007 to June 2009. The age, gender, tribe, occupation, motive of assault, perpetrator information, part of body injured, treatment given and outcome were collected in a proforma. The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel. Results : All 57 patients seen were males. Their ages ranged from 13 to 60 years, with the mean age of 32.9±12.2years. The peak age incidence was 21-30years, accounting for 21cases (36.8%). Fighting between herdsmen and farmers over grazing land was the most common cause of arrow shot injuries, accounting for 25 cases (43.9%), followed by armed banditry with 17 cases (29.8%). Fighting over women was the cause in 10 cases (17.5%). Most of the patients had high Revised Trauma Score. Resuscitative and surgical procedures carried out resulted in recovery of 55 patients. Two patients with the highest number of arrow shots (11 and 4 each) and low Revised Trauma Score of 2 and 4 respectively, died pre-operatively. Conclusion : The rate of arrow shot assault injuries in the North East of Nigeria remains high with its attendant morbidity and mortality. It stems mainly from interpersonal conflicts between herdsmen and farmers over grazing land. Mapping out of grazing lands away from farm lands, enlightenment campaigns, improvement of socio-economic conditions as well as enforced legislative control on the use of bow and arrow will go a long way to reduce the incidence of arrow shot injuries in the region.

Initial movement of the maxillary first molars under the application of straight-pull, cervical-pull, and high-pull headgear was measured in human subjects. Facebow deflection can influence molar movement as the relationship of the force vector to the molar's center of resistance changes with an increase of force. The present study proposes using headgear with a combination of variable-pull headcap and short outer bow. A variable-pull headcap allows a great range in force direction. The direction of the headgear force system can be accurately determined using a short outer bow.

Mountain Tribes of New Guinea. Some hitherto un-described tribes of New Guinea are the subject of a communication from Mr. E. W. P. Chinnery (Man, August). They inhabit the great central mountain ranges which are now being examined by administrative officers. Along the Papuan border from Mt. Joseph to Mt. Hagen, and on a wide expanse of grass-covered plateau between the Western Kratke Mountains and Mt. Hagen, are groups of people with methods of garden culture and certain customs not found elsewhere in New Guinea. Of the three groups of these peoples, the western half of the second group and the whole of the third or north-western group have only recently been examined. The so-called Kukukuku groups usually live in small family houses near their gardens; but in the western Tauri there are many large stockaded villages of round houses with conical roofs. Both men and women dress alike. The men are usually clean-shaven and the hair is cut short with a tuft on the top to hold a loop from which is suspended a long cape of tapa cloth for protection against cold and rain. The men use a short bow and arrows, and carry a stone-headed club. They chew betel nut, but do not smoke tobacco. Cannibalism has been reported of the people between the Garfuku River and Kratke Mountains. During inter-tribal warfare the women accompany the men with spare arrows. On the Bena Bena tributary there is a cane-swallowing ritual not previously observed in New Guinea. Some of the adult men wear a long length of thin cane doubled and looped round their necks. They send the women and children away and then push the bent part of the cane down the gullet for several inches, leaving the two ends protruding from the mouth. It is said that a man may have three canes down his throat at the same time. At one performance two important men grasped the ends of the cane and danced around the performer, who still had the rest of the cane down his throat.
