Successful transfer of a fertilized bovine egg by non-surgical techniques.

Summary. Two fertilized eggs, recovered from two gonadotrophintreated Holstein heifers 4 and 6 days after ovulation, were transferred to the uteri of two synchronized recipient heifers by means of non-surgical techniques. A specially designed apparatus was used for the transfer. Both recipients became pregnant and one gave birth to a normal bull calf after 268 days. It was established by blood-typing that the calf had developed from a transferred embryo. The other recipient aborted on the 80th day of pregnancy.

The Freezing of Dog Spermatozoa to —79°C

SUMMARY In experiments on the survival of dog spermatozoa during deep-freezing to — 79°C. and thawing, 8 per cent v/v glycerol in the diluent gave better revival rates than 4 per cent, but it was necessary to centrifuge and resuspend all samples of the spermatozoa in a diluent free of glycerol before strong motility was seen. The basic diluent, composed of Ringer solution and phosphate buffer, was improved by the addition of fructose and bovine plasma albumin or egg lecithin. Very few spermatozoa survived deep-freezing after a 50-fold dilution in Ringer-phosphate containing glycerol and fructose.
