TREATMENT of the dimeric dianionic iron and cobalt dithiolenes, [MS4C4R4]2−2, [Fe(S2C6H3Me)2]2−2 and [Fe (S2C6Cl4)2]2−2, where R is CN, or CF3, with Lewis bases such as pyridines, phosphines, stibines, CN− or N3−, results in the dissociation of the dimers and formation of five co-ordinate adducts, [M(L)−S4]−1 or [M(L′)−S4]−2, where L is a neutral and L′ is a monoanionic Lewis base. With bidentate bases such as α,α′-dipyridyl and o-phenanthroline, six-co-ordinate complexes, [M(N–N)−S4]−1, were formed, and similar adducts of the cobalt dithiolenes with ethylenediamine and dimethylglyoxime were also prepared.
