Summary IAA, Eth and Kn at lower concentrations stimulated the betacyanin synthesis and depressed the hypocotyl length of dark grown Celosia argentea var. cristata seedlings, whereas CCC caused a decrease in the seedling growth as well as in the pigment content. ABA was found to be most effective in inducing the synthesis of betacyanin in the dark. GA 3 proved ineffective in altering the betacyanin content, though it showed antagonistic effects with ABA on the pigment level and hypocotyl length. It is concluded from the results of the experiments that IAA, Eth, Kn and ABA at specific concentrations control the synthesis of betacyanin via ethylene production in plant tissues.
