Clinical Outcomes of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation in Sepsis: A Review

Introduction: Sepsis is a critical condition characterised by systemic infl ammation and immune dysregulation, leading to signifi cant morbidity and mortality worldwide. In 2017, sepsis was associated with approximately 48.9 million cases and 11 million deaths, accounting for nearly 20% of global fatalities. Effective therapeutic interventions are essential to mitigate its impact. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (FAs) are bioactive lipids known for their immunomodulatory and anti-infl ammatory properties, which may infl uence clinical outcomes in sepsis. Aim: This review aims to assess the impact of Omega-3 FAs supplementation on various clinical parameters in sepsis, including infl ammation, haemodynamic, respiratory function, coagulation, and neurological status. Materials and Methods: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar. Relevant studies reporting the effects of Omega-3 FAs administration on clinical outcomes in sepsis were analysed, focusing on infl ammatory markers, metabolic parameters, and patient recovery indicators. Results: Studies indicate that Omega-3 FAs supplementation correlates with improved clinical outcomes in sepsis. Patients receiving Omega-3 FAs exhibited reduced infl ammatory markers, including signifi cantly lower C-reactive protein levels. Haemodynamic parameters showed antiarrhythmic effects and blood pressure reduction, while oxygenation indices and gas exchange parameters improved. Coagulation-related outcomes demonstrated reduced platelet aggregation, and metabolic parameters refl ected positive modulation, including lower triglyceride levels and enhanced liver function. Neurological assessments indicated improved Glasgow Coma Scale scores, while renal function markers suggested a reduced risk of proteinuria. Several studies also reported a reduction in hospital stay length and mechanical ventilation duration. Conclusion: The fi ndings suggest that Omega-3 FAs supplementation may provide benefi cial effects in sepsis by modulating infl ammation, coagulation, haemodynamic, and respiratory function, and neurological status. Further research is needed to develop standardised protocols for its clinical application.

Investigation of the effects of ellagic, vanillic and rosmarinic acid on reperfusion-induced renal injury.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ellagic, vanillic and rosmarinic acid on reperfusion-related kidney damage, developed in an experimental lower-extremity ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) model. Forty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into six groups. A median laparotomy and dissection were performed. In the I/R group, 60 minutes of ischaemia followed by 120 minutes of reperfusion was achieved. In addition one group was given 100 mg/kg ellagic acid, one group was given 12 mg/kg vanillic acid, one group was given 50 mg/kg rosmarinic acid and one group was given all three drugs 15 minutes before clamp removal. Bilateral kidney and blood samples were taken in all groups. Tubular epithelial degeneration, necrosis of the tubule epithelium and vessel wall thickening were significantly higher in the I/R group. Some parameters in the groups that were given drugs were found to be lower than in the I/R group and close to that of the control group. Total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) were significantly higher and total antioxidant status (TAS) was significantly lower in the I/R group. Although not statistically significant in the groups given drugs, TAS was higher, and TOS and OSI were lower than in the I/R group. The antioxidant effect of ellagic, vanillic and rosmarinic acid administration may have beneficial effects on renal damage after reperfusion in acute lower-extremity ischaemia. This study is expected to provide information for future clinical trials.

Emotions in green: unveiling the paradox of green human resource management in shaping employee conduct

This study examines the paradoxical dual effects of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) in the hospitality industry. While prior comparative research has shed light on its positive impacts on organizations, the exploration of its potential adverse effects, particularly the reasons behind its paradoxical effects, is less developed. Grounded in the cognitive appraisal theory of emotion, this research analyze 407 valid survey responses from China to investigate the conditions under which GHRM leads to both benefical and detrimental organizational effects. The findings reveal that for employees with high green personal values, GHRM triggers positive emotions, thereby promoting organizational green advocacy behaviors. Conversely, for employees with lower green values, it induces negative emotions, which in turn increase workplace cheating behaviors. Theoretically, this study advances the understanding of the paradoxical nature of GHRM, particularly within the context of the hospiality sector. Practically, it offers valuable insights for implementing green management in the industry, broadening the comprehension of how corporate green management in the industry, broading the comprehension of how corporate green initiatives interact with employee values. These insights can assist the hospitality sector in adopting GHRM more effectively, enhacing environmental performance, and responding to the growing environmental concerns of customers and stakeholders.

HIV and liver disease.

Liver-related diseases are associated with the high levels of morbidity and mortality in people living with HIV. Between 13% and 18% of all-cause mortality in HIV-infected patients involves a liver-related damage, this being one of the main causes of death not related to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). People living with HIV, even when the disease is under control, are more likely to develop pathologies and complications of a liver-related origin than the general population, both due to common causes such as alcoholism, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatic viral infections and ageing, in addition to specific HIV-related processes such as antiretroviral treatment toxicity and liver damage inherent to HIV infection. On the other hand, some antiretroviral drugs may have a beneficial effect in reversing liver fibrosis in patients with HIV and chronic liver disease. This paper reviews the main risk factors associated with liver disease in people living with HIV and the role of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in this disease.

Innovative methods in evaluating the effects of lipid-lowering medication on bone tissue

The benefic effects of lipid-lowering medication, in terms of reducing cardiovascular risk, should not to lead to ignoring of the potential adverse effects of this medication. Methods. The study used two quantitative, modern methods for analyzing bone tissue: 1D 1H NMR diffusiometry and 2D T2-T2 exchange 1H NMR relaxometry. The effects of simvastatin and fenofibrate on the Albinos Wistar rats’ bone tissue cytoarchitecture have been highlighted, both in terms of pore size and pore connectivity. The evaluations were dynamical, at 14, 16, and 18 weeks, respectively, in order to observe the effect of this medication in correlation with the duration of administration. Both fenofibrate and simvastatin decrease bone strength, and the effect was more significant with the increase of the duration of treatment. The negative effects on bone tissue are more significant with fenofibrate.

The Effect of Brand Image and Brand Trust on Repurchase Intention of Rexona Products in Surabaya

This study is prompted by the reduction in the Rexona brand index in 2024, which coincided with several program-related mistakes that generated consumer dissatisfaction and led to a noticeable erosion of both brand image and brand trust. Such circumstances highlight the vulnerability of even well-established brands when faced with consumer discontent, as missteps in marketing campaigns or product related initiatives can have a lasting impact on how consumers perceive and evaluate a brand. For companies operating in highly competitive industries, these issues raise serious concerns, since negative brand perceptions and diminished trust are likely to undermine consumer loyalty, weaken brand equity, and reduce the likelihood of long-term purchasing behavior. Against this backdrop, the present research seeks to examine more deeply how brand image and brand trust contribute to shaping consumers repurchase intention for Rexona products in Surabaya, a city that represents a dynamic and diverse consumer market. To achieve this objective, the study adopted a quantitative research approach, applying the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method for statistical analysis. Data were obtained through purposive sampling, involving 110 respondents who were identified as active and cosistent user of Rexona products within the city of Surabaya. The findings of the research reveal that brand image shows a benefical effect on repurchase intention, while brand trust demonstrates a significant role in enhancing consumer willingness to engage in repeat purchases. These results emphasize that the synergy between a strong brand image and sustained consumer trust acts as a fundamental determinant for maintaining repurchase intention, particularly within highly competitive market environments.

The purpose of the work is to analyze the eff ect of biologically active substances iodine and selenium on meat productivity and meat quality of broiler chickens. Iodine is a key element in regulating the functioning of the thyroid gland; without this microelement, the synthesis of thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine) necessary for normal growth and development of the body is impossible. In addition, iodine stimulates protein, fat, carbohydrate metabolism, the synthesis of substances in the body, increases immunoreactivity, and also has a benefi cial eff ect on the functional state of the reproductive system of animals. Selenium is an equally important microelement that accelerates oxidation and reduction reactions, increases the intensity of metabolic processes and the digestibility of nutrients. In addition, together with vitamin E the antioxidant prevents excessive formation of free radicals. Selenium also has the property of replacing vitamin E in some cases, aff ecting the processes of tissue respiration and the immunological reactivity of the body. The use of selenium as an antioxidant shows high efficiency in increasing poultry productivity. Selenium is a component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which neutralizes the action of free radicals that damage the structural components of cells. Enrichment of broiler chicken meat with iodine and selenium can help to compensate for their defi ciency in food products for the population, especially in regions where there is a defi ciency of these microelements. The use of organic and inorganic forms of selenium and iodine in feeding broiler chickens helps to increase live weight, preservation, digestibility of nutrients in diets, as well as the coeffi cient of biological completeness of broiler chicken meat.

Efficacy of repeated pronations in patients affected by COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome: think it twice!

Prone position is widely used to ameliorate gas exchange in severe COVID-19-related ARDS (CARDS), through its beneficial effects on shunt and dead space. However, the effectiveness of repeated pronation has never been explored in this category of patients. We then retrospectively analyzed the changes of the alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient (A-aO2grad), as shunt index, and the ratio EtCO2/paCO2 ratio, as dead space index, during repeated pronation cycles in 7 patients with CARDS admitted to our Intensive Care Unit. The A-aO2grad decreased significantly more during the first pronation than the second (-43.6% vs. -12.2% - p0.008) and, similarly, the improvement was maintained only after the first supination (-26.2% vs. +9% - p0.04). The EtCO2/paCO2 ratio showed similar behavior but did not achieve statistical significance. Considering our findings, with the inherent limitations of the study, since pronation entails risks for the patient, as well as requiring a lot of effort from the nursing staff, further caution appears to be necessary in indicating pronation.

Violent Conflict and Informal Institutions: Evidence from a Civil Conflict in Pakistan

Conflicts have a variety of economic, social, and institutional consequences. In this study, we analyse the institutional legacies of violent conflicts by providing evidence from a civil conflict which occurred in the district Swat of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan. We consider three dimensions, i.e. Trust, Participation, and Cooperation, of informal institutions. District Buner—the neighboring district, is taken as the control district. A random sample of 500 households from each district is selected and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Spatial Regression Discontinuity Design (SRDD) are employed for estimation. We find that exposure to violence undermines out-group trust and trust in governmental organisations; however, it promotes within-group trust and trust in Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). Likewise, conflicts stimulate participation in social organisations, political activities, and nongovernment structures but discourage participation in formal government structures. With regard to cooperation, conflicts have beneficial effects on within-group cooperation, collective problem solution, and cooperation with NGOs. However, they retard cooperation with formal government structures. The intensity of these effects is influenced by the location of the individuals as is shown by the results of SRDD. Alternatively, highly exposed areas exhibit comparatively higher changes in trust, participation, and cooperation as compared to the moderately and least affected areas.

Antilipidemic and Nephro-Hepatoprotective activities of Rosmarinus officinalis Ethanolic extract in Wistar rats

Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis, from the vernacular name Azir, is medicinal plant used by Moroccan population, it contains chemical compounds with great nutritional value and multiple phytotherapeutic virtues. The study aims to assess the effect of ethanolic extract of Rosmarinus officinalis on lipidic status and blood parameters in rats. Male rats of Wistar strain were divided into 3 groups: control groups and two groups receiving the R. officinalis extract, one fed a standard diet and the other receiving a fat-enriched diet. The ethanolic extract of the Rosmarinus officinalis leaves was administered orally at a rate of 300mg/Kg for the group 2 and 1000mg/Kg for the group 3 for 4 weeks. Serum parameters were measured using a spectrophotometer including: alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) and aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) at 340nm, creatinine (Cr), cholesterol, glucose, total cholesterol (CHO), triglycerides (TG) at 500nm and urea at 600nm. The results show that EERO administration for 28 days decreases the levels of ALT and AST urea and glucose (P<0.05), indicating a nephron-hepatoprotective activities, and without effect on cholesterol levels in treated rats with 300mg/Kg and 1000 mg/Kg in comparison with control rats however, the triglyceride level was decreased in rats treated by EERO indicating a antilipidemic propriety of rosemary. These findings show that EERO has a benefic effect on lipidemic, hepatic and nephrotic parameters.

Application of Nanotechnology to Develop Carrageenan-based Films and Coatings as Carriers for Essential Oils.

This review highlights the effect of combining bioactive agents, especially nanoparticles, in carrageenan coating to increase the quality and stability of foods. This study is designed based on a review of previous studies. Biopolymer coatings and films are suitable for food and non-food packaging due to their degradability, renewable and edible nature. Edible coatings and films are based on polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids. They confer some beneficial effects on foods, such as improvement of appearance and texture, reducing the amount of moisture loss and oxidation, prevention of the release of gases and control of microbial growth, delaying ripening and adverse changes in color and taste, improvement of nutritional value, and increasing the shelf life of the product. These improvements lead to the prevention of food spoilage and increase the shelf life of various foods. In addition, nanomaterials and food additives such as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents, flavorings, and colors can be incorporated into food coatings and films to expand their applications. Nanotechnology can be applied in coatings and food films using nanoparticles. However, more research is still needed to gather information about coating formulations, especially when new materials are incorporated into them.

Multifaceted Nature of HuR in Atherosclerosis Development.

HuR (Human antigen R) is an RNA binding protein (RBP) that specifically binds to certain RNA sequences, influencing post-transcriptional regulation. HuR is primarily involved in tumor regulation, as well as cell growth, proliferation, inflammation, and angiogenesis. HuR is implicated in endothelial activation, smooth muscle proliferation, inflammatory response, macrophage apoptosis, lipid regulation, and autophagy, playing a crucial regulatory role in atherosclerosis. Accumulating evidence suggests that HuR has dual roles in AS. On the one hand, HuR expedites the development of AS by facilitating endothelial activation, smooth muscle proliferation, and inflammation. On the contrary, it exerts beneficial effects by reducing macrophage apoptosis, regulating lipid efflux, and increasing autophagy. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive summary of the role of HuR in the development of AS by examining its involvement in cellular mechanisms, inflammation, autophagy, and apoptosis. Additionally, we discuss the mechanisms of drugs that target HuR, with the goal of offering new perspectives for the treatment of AS.

: Micro-hydraulic components and key technologies are important directions of fluid transmission and control, which are widely used in the national defense industry, production line conveying equipment, exoskeleton robot, and more. : The current development status of miniature hydraulic components and key technologies is summarized, and the existing advantages of hydraulic components and technology are pointed out, and the research object is focused on relevant papers and patents. : We study the beneficial effects of the existing microcomponents and technologies, the performance indexes of typical products, and the latest progress in their structure innovation, material replacement, testing methods, and processing technology are summarized. : Typical achievements, core components, and manufacturing aspects are studied in-depth. They become smaller with increased output power and find more diverse scenarios with advancing technology maturity. : By improving the hardware structure of the existing miniature hydraulic component, and constantly innovating the processing technology, miniature hydraulic components will improve their efficiency and power density and will focus on further miniaturization in the future.

Conditioned Medium Treatment for the Improvement of Functional Recovery after Spinal Cord Injury: A Meta-Analysis Study.

While there is no certain treatment for spinal cord injury (SCI), stem cellbased therapy may be an attractive alternative, but the survival and differentiation of cells in the host tissue are poor. Conditioned medium (CM) has several beneficial effects on cells. In this meta-analysis study, we examined the effect of CM on SCI treatment. After searching on MEDLINE, SCOPUS, EMBASE, and Web of Science, first and secondary screening were performed based on title, abstract, and full text. The data were extracted from the included studies, and meta-analysis was performed using STATA.14 software. A standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval was used to report findings. Quality control and subgroup analysis were also performed. The results from 52 articles and 61 separate experiments showed that CM had a significantly strong effect on improving motor function after SCI (SMD = 2.58; 95% CI: 2.17 to 2.98; p < 0.001) and also analysis of data from 12 articles demonstrated that CM reduced the expression of GFAP marker (SMD = -4.16; p < 0.0001) compared to SCI group without any treatment. Subgroup analysis showed that treatment with CM of neural stem cells was better than CM of mesenchymal stem cells. It was more effective after a mild lesion than a moderate or severe one. The improvement was more pronounced with <4 weeks than >4 weeks follow-up. CM had a significant effect in improving motor function after SCI, especially in cases of mild lesions. It has been observed that if CM originates from the neural stem cells, it has a more significant effect than mesenchymal cells.

The role of physical exercise in the rehabilitation of children with surgically treated unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis

Slipped capital femoral epiphysiolysis (SCFE) is a multifactorial pathology; the major predisposing factor is obesity. The main objective of our study is to underline the im-portance of early rehabilitation in functional recovery of children with operated unilateral SCFE. 30 patients with unilateral SCFE treated by in situ fixation with a percutaneous screw have been evaluated using the Harris Hip Score (HHS) before surgery, 7 days post-op and three months post-operatively. The 30 patients participating were divided into two groups: group 1 (15 patients who followed a physical exercise program: aerobic cycling, strength training, proprioceptive exercises) and group 2 (15 patients who did not undergo rehabilitation). There were no significant differences between the two groups before sur-gery and after one week evaluations. After 3 months, the HHS was significantly higher for group 1. The group that followed a physical exercise program after surgery (group 1) had better functional outcomes after 3 months in comparison to the group without a physical exercise program (group 2) (mean difference of HHS: 49.26 for group 1, 36.17 for group 2). Regarding body mass index (BMI) we noticed that patients in group 1 had statistically significant lower values at 3-month assessment when compared to before surgery (24.26 ± 2.21 vs. 26.03 ± 3.41, p=0.0003). For group 2 patients there were no differences of BMI be-tween the two evaluations (26.83 ± 2.54 vs. 26.95 ± 2.66, p=0.15). There were statistically significant differences between the two groups at 3-month assessment, with patients in group 1 having a decreased BMI. Early postoperative physical therapy after SCFE surgery improves functionality and hip range of motion, reducing pain and having a beneficial ef-fect on weight loss.

Background and Aims: Previous studies indicated the usual dose heparin(5000 IU bolus followed by 500~1250 IU/h) during mechanical thrombectomy(MT) is associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic conversion without beneficial effect. East Asians are known to have a higher risk of bleeding compared to other races, and they often take lower doses of antithrombotics. However, role of minimal-dose heparin as an adjuvant treatment during MT in East Asians remains unclear. Methods: We enrolled the patients who underwent MT from the Inha University Hospital Stroke Prospective Registry and compared clinical findings between patients who received heparin during MT and those who did not. Results: From January 2016 to March 2024, 460 patients (68.8 years, 270 men) were included, and 70(15.2%) subjects received intravenous heparin, dose 500-1000 IU bolus, followed by 500 IU per hour. There were no differences in baseline characteristics or procedural parameter including procedural time, device, and TICI grade between two groups. However, intravenous thrombolysis was performed more frequently in the non-user group than in the heparin group, and the apTT value after the procedure was higher in the heparin group than in the other groups(75.9±12.5 vs 40.8±10.1 sec). The risk of hemorrhagic conversion on image was significantly higher in heparin group than non user group(31.4% vs 21.3%, p=0.04). This trend also seemed to be seen in patients who did not undergo intravenous thrombolysis group. This Early distal migration of embolus, defined as difference location of embolus between initial CT angiography and initial conventional angiographym was observed more frequently in heparin group, compared with non-user group. However, there was no difference in mRS at 90 days and early neurological deficit between the two groups. Conclusions: Even minimal dose of intravenous heparin injection around MT was associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic conversion and distal migration without significant change in functional outcome or recanalization status.

Protective Role of Electroacupuncture Against Cognitive Impairment in Neurological Diseases.

Many neurological diseases can lead to cognitive impairment in patients, which includes dementia and mild cognitive impairment and thus create a heavy burden both to their families and public health. Due to the limited effectiveness of medications in treating cognitive impairment, it is imperative to develop alternative treatments. Electroacupuncture (EA), a required method for Traditional Chinese Medicine, has the potential treatment of cognitive impairment. However, the molecular mechanisms involved have not been fully elucidated. Considering the current research status, preclinical literature published within the ten years until October 2022 was systematically searched through PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Ovid, and Embase. By reading the titles and abstracts, a total of 56 studies were initially included. It is concluded that EA can effectively ameliorate cognitive impairment in preclinical research of neurological diseases and induce potentially beneficial changes in molecular pathways, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular cognitive impairment, chronic pain, and Parkinson's disease. Moreover, EA exerts beneficial effects through the same or diverse mechanisms for different disease types, including but not limited to neuroinflammation, neuronal apoptosis, neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity, and autophagy. However, these findings raise further questions that need to be elucidated. Overall, EA therapy for cognitive impairment is an area with great promise, even though more research regarding its detailed mechanisms is warranted.

Assessing the Impact of Stem Cell-based Therapy on Periodontal Health: A Meta-analysis of Clinical Studies.

While clinical trials exploring stem cells for regenerating periodontal tissues have demonstrated positive results, there is a limited availability of systematic literature reviews on this subject. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of stem cell interventions in periodontal regeneration, this meta-analysis is undertaken to assess the beneficial effects of stem cells in human periodontal regeneration. "PubMed," "PubMed Central," "Web of Science," "Embase Scopus" "Wanfang," and "CNKI," were used to extract clinical studies related to the utilization of stem cells in repairing periodontal tissue defects. This search included studies published up until October 5, 2023. The inclusion criteria required the studies to compare the efficacy of stem cell-based therapy with stem cell-free therapy for regenerating periodontal tissues. Meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager software (version 5.4). This meta-analysis synthesized findings from 15 selected studies investigating the impact of stem cell interventions on periodontal tissue regeneration. The "stem cell" group displayed a substantial reduction in clinical attachment level (CAL) compared to the "control" group within 3 to 12 months post-surgery. However, no significant differences in CAL gain were found between groups. Probing pocket depth (PPD) significantly decreased in the "stem cell" group compared to the "control" group, particularly for follow-up periods exceeding 6 months, and dental stem cell treatment exhibited notable improvements. Conversely, no significant differences were observed in PPD reduction. Gingival recession (GR) significantly decreased in the "stem cell" group compared to the "control" group at 3 to 12 months post-surgery. No significant differences were observed in GR reduction between groups. No significant differences were identified in cementoenamel junction-bone distance reduction, infrabony defect reduction, or bone mineral density increase between the two groups. Furthermore, no significant changes were observed in the gingival index, plaque index, or width of keratinized gingiva. In conclusion, while stem cell-based therapy offers promising prospects for periodontal defect treatment, there are notable limitations in the current body of research. Larger, multicenter, double-blind RCTs with robust methodologies are needed to provide more reliable evidence for stem cell-based intervention in periodontitis.

EXPLORING THE INFLUENCE OF YOGA PRACTICES ON SLEEP HEALTH PARAMETERS AMONG INSOMNIA PATIENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Background: Insomnia is a common sleep problem. change in life style has played role for rising in cases of insomnia. Day time work is disturbed by sleep problems. It can have adverse effects on physical and mental health in the long run. Yoga promotes physical, mental, and emotional health. It seems that yoga can be considered as a tool for the management of insomnia. Aim: To study role of yoga activities for parameters related to sleep health in people with insomnia. Methods: Researchers used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta- Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Researchers searched articles on PubMed, Google scholar and by manual search. Searched articles were screened for relevancy. By use of inclusion and exclusion criteria potential articles were selected. Results: Out of 232 articles, fi nally 4 studies included in current systematic review. The age of participants ranged from 25−70 years. Overall, included studies found benefi cial effect on parameter related to sleep health by yoga activities in people with insomnia. Conclusion: Yoga activities can be advantageous for sleep health in people with insomnia. Y oga activities can be useful as a part of therapy in people with insomnia. There is wide scope for further studies to assess benefi cial effects of yoga activities.
