This issue of Departures in Critical Qualitative Research ( DCQR ) takes up the theme and issue of travel in complex and compelling forms. The pieces in the collection take us on the American Expedition travel-study course in Yosemite National Park, CA; a series of Voodoo Tours in the heart of New Orleans, LA; a Youth Experience Tour in Masada National Park, Israel; to, through, and into roadside and digital tourism in the Irish Hills of Michigan; and an electronic dance music festival on the beaches of Goa, India. The authors use scrapbooking, performative autoethnography, touring and curation, and experimental writing to suggest the affective experience, texture, and dialogic critique generated by encounters in and through each of these sites. Characteristics, seasonal distribution and surface degradation features of microplastic pellets along the Goa coast, India

Microplastic pellets (MPPs) are ubiquitous contaminants, recognised as a serious threat to the biota in coastal, estuarine and marine environment. The distribution, abundance, weathering and chemical characteristics of MPPs on the beaches of Goa, and their transport to the coast during the southwest (SW) monsoon are discussed in this paper. MPP samples collected from six sandy beaches were categorised based on colour and polymer types using Stereoscope microscope and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, respectively. White colour MPPs were the most abundant, and Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP) were the dominant polymer types of MPPs deposited on all the beaches. Carbonyl index values showed that MPPs collected in June 2015 (representing SW monsoon) were ‘new’, whereas the MPPs collected in January 2015 were ‘aged’, showing that MPPs are arriving at Goa coast only during SW monsoon due to conducive hydrodynamic conditions. Characteristics of MPPs suggest that they could be originated primarily from ocean-based sources. The winds and surface currents during SW monsoon are the driving forces for the transportation and deposition of MPPs on the Goa beaches. The results of this study will be useful to the National ‘Clean India’ program for effective plastic debris removal management.

A case study on effects of oil spills and tar-ball pollution on beaches of Goa (India)

This paper reports the impact of oil spills and tar-ball pollution on the coastal ecosystem of Goa. The factors responsible for degrading the marine ecosystem of the Goan coastline are analyzed. Uncontrolled activities were found to degrade the marine and coastal biodiversity, in turn polluting all beaches. This had a direct impact on the Goan economy through a decline in tourism. The government must adopt the necessary control measures to restore Goan beaches and the surrounding coastal areas.

Basic Facilities Of Tourism Industry On Economic Growth Of India (since 2001–2013)

India has over the years become a more open economy. It is a beautiful and exotic country with colorful traditions and centuries of history. It still has unique beauty and charm. However, India has many more places to visit that foreign tourists may not know about. Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, is a popular travel destination for Indians and foreigners. The beaches of Goa are a tropical paradise but are also relatively unknown to the rest of the world. India needs to market itself to the world as a unique country with much to offer the visiting tourist. The India travel and tourism industry ranked 5th in the long-term (10-year) growth and is expected to be the second largest employer in the world by 2019. The 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi significantly have improved tourism in India. Tourism can significantly contribute to environmental protection, conservation and renewal of biological variety and supportable use of natural resources. Because of their attraction, fresh sites and natural areas are identified as valuable and the need to keep the attraction alive can lead to creation of national parks and wildlife parks.

Identification of sources of tar balls deposited along the Goa coast, India, using fingerprinting techniques

Deposition of tar balls along the coast of Goa, India is a common phenomenon during the southwest monsoon. Representative tar ball samples collected from various beaches of Goa and one Bombay High (BH) crude oil sample were subjected to fingerprint analysis based on diagnostic ratios of n-alkane, biomarkers of pentacyclic tri-terpanes and compound specific stable carbon isotope (δ13C) analysis to confirm the source. The results were compared with the published data of Middle East Crude Oil (MECO) and South East Asian Crude Oil (SEACO). The results revealed that the tar balls were from tanker-wash derived spills. The study also confirmed that the source is not the BH, but SEACO. The present study suggests that the biomarkers of alkanes and hopanes coupled with stable carbon isotope analysis act as a powerful tool for tracing the source of tar balls, particularly when the source specific biomarkers fail to distinguish the source.

Goa Hippy Tribe: Theorising Documentary Content on a Social Network Site

In the 1970s, a wave of young Western hippies descended on the beaches of Goa in India. Forty years later, some of them reconnected on the social network site Facebook and planned a reunion. This event, and the Goan hippy community then and now, are the subjects of a documentary called Goa Hippy Tribe, produced by Australian documentary maker Darius Devas. Funded by Screen Australia, SBS and Screen New South Wales, Goa Hippy Tribe is the first Australian documentary to be produced for the social network site Facebook. In this article, I consider how documentary in a social network context might be theorised. While the concept of the database narrative is most often invoked to explain user interactivity in online documentary, social networks such as Facebook invite different forms of interaction, and therefore raise distinct theoretical questions. In particular, Goa Hippy Tribe demonstrates the potential for the audience to engage creatively and communally with documentary.

Some aspects of geomorphic processes along the Goa coast through remote sensing

This paper deals with the processes operating on the beaches of Goa, interpreted from imagery, followed by ground-truth collection and field checks. Studies on Landsat imagery bring out two distinct coastal geomorphological features, one north and the other south of Vasco-da-Gama. The beaches to the south indicate the prograding shoreline with deposition being the dominant phenomenon. The beaches to the north of Vasco-da-Gama reveal a retrograding shoreline where erosion is dominant.
