ATLANTIC DIP, Changing the Landscape for Better Maternal and Infant Health: The 2024 Norbert Freinkel Award Lecture.

The Norbert Freinkel Award recognizes contribution of research, clinical practice, and advocacy to improving pregnancy outcomes for women with diabetes. This award honors a man of outstanding achievements. Norbert was a forward-thinking investigator, a concise and precise writer, and a gifted clinical practitioner. His philosophy stated that a research question should be framed around an unsolved patient problem, a solution should be sought at several levels and across several disciplines, and the solution should be shared and applied to the problem. The Atlantic Diabetes in Pregnancy (ATLANTIC DIP) network has followed this philosophy. Women now achieve better pregnancy preparation and have lower blood glucose and lower glycated hemoglobin with improved pregnancy outcomes. Screening and follow-up for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is consistent. The trial on early metformin in addition to usual care in the reduction of GDM effects (A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial of the Effectiveness of Metformin in Addition to Usual Care in the Reduction of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Effects [EMERGE]) provides evidence for metformin use in pregnancies complicated by GDM as an alternative to insulin. Learnings and evidence from ATLANTIC DIP have shaped national policy and guidelines and have contributed to global knowledge in this area. We continue to strive for excellence and equity of care and normalization of perinatal outcomes.

Frustrated Lewis pairs reactivity across the periodic table: The 2024 Catalysis Award Lecture

This article presents an overview of some of our developments of the chemistry of “frustrated Lewis pairs” (FLPs). We begin with a brief outline of the foundations of this discovery and applications of FLPs in hydrogenations. Recent advances in asymmetric hydrogenations and CO2 reduction are discussed. Early studies of FLPs with alkynes and olefins are introduced and shown to lead to the more recent uncovering of phosphino-phosphination reactions, affording a route to dissymmetric bidentate phosphines, a class of understudied ligands for transition metal catalysis. The concept of FLP is further expanding into alkali metal species, with applications in the chemistry with CO or H2 as well as Fischer–Tropsch chemistry. Efforts to use FLPs to model the reduction of N2 in Haber–Bosch type chemistry are also discussed. The concept of FLPs is applied to xenon difluoride chemistry and the fluorination of electron deficient boranes and borates affording new anions that offer potential applications in catalysis. Finally, the broad scope of chemistry where FLPs are being applied is briefly highlighted, demonstrating the impact of this concept around the world and across the periodic table.

The Barancik award lecture: Multi-disciplinary research will be the key to stop, restore, and end MS

The past 25 years have brought extraordinary advances in our understanding of MS pathogenesis and the subsequent development of effective therapies. Collaborative genetics efforts have uncovered the association of 236 common DNA variants with disease susceptibility and the first association with disease severity, paving the way to more effective therapies, particularly for progressive forms of the disease. In parallel, and in addition to established environmental disease triggers or modifiers, new collaborative work has revealed new associations with components of the gut microbiome. This research opened a new and exciting prospect for exploring the gut–brain axis, with the potential to also provide new pharmacologic targets and diet-based therapies. Finally, with the availability of massive amounts of information and unprecedented computer power, a new wave of artificial intelligence (AI)-based research is sprawling. These investigations will result in statistically powerful predictive models to identify individuals at risk even years before the disease is clinically apparent. Furthermore, using approaches like semantic representation and causal inference, some of these approaches will be explainable in biomedical terms, thus making them trusted and facilitating their implementation in the clinical setting. The common thread that characterizes all of these advances is multi-disciplinary collaboration among scientists in the form of formal consortia, working groups, or ad hoc partnerships. This may be the “secret sauce” of modern science and the best strategy to stop, restore, and end MS.

Lessons Learned From Epidemiology of Type 2 Diabetes in South Asians: Kelly West Award Lecture 2024.

South Asia has high prevalence rates of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Until the 1990s, the prevalence of T2D within South Asia was low but much higher in the South Asian diaspora living abroad. Today, high prevalence rates of T2D are reported among those living in South Asia. T2D in South Asians presents with unique clinical features described as the "South Asian phenotype" that include younger age at onset of diabetes than in White Europeans, much lower BMI, hyperinsulinemia and greater insulin resistance, rapid decline in β-cell function resulting in low insulin reserve, low muscle mass, and greater ectopic fat deposition, especially in the liver. Also, prevalence of impaired fasting glucose is higher among South Asians than prevalence of impaired glucose tolerance. Genetic predisposition combined with intrauterine fetal programming (low vitamin B12 intake and high folate intake) increases susceptibility to T2D, from birth. In later life, overnutrition, especially a high carbohydrate intake with refined grains of higher glycemic index, coupled with low physical activity likely triggers the T2D epidemic in South Asians. Additionally, there are emerging risk factors like air pollution. Preventing T2D in South Asians requires a multifactorial approach, including improvements in maternal and fetal nutrition with special reference to vitamin B12 and folate intake, decreasing refined carbohydrate and increasing protein and fiber intake in the diet, increasing physical activity, and control of air pollution. Lessons learned from epidemiology of T2D in South Asians could be useful to other developing countries that are in earlier stages of epidemiological transition.

Kleemeier Award lecture will feature an address by the 2023 Kleemeier Award recipient David M. Almeida, PhD, FGSA of Pennsylvania State University. The Kent Award is given annually to a member of The Gerontological Society of America who best exemplifies the highest standards of professional leadership in gerontology through teaching, service, and interpretation of gerontology to the larger society. The Kleemeier Award is given annually to a member of The Gerontological Society of America in recognition for outstanding research in the field of gerontology.

THE CLARK TIBBITTS AWARD AND HIRAM J. FRIEDSAM AWARD LECTURES AND PRESENTATIONS

Abstract The Clark Tibbitts Award Lecture will feature an address by the 2024 award recipient Joann M. Motepare, PhD, FGSA, FAGHE, of Lasell University. The Hiram J. Friedsam Award Lecture will feature an address by the 2024 award recipient Dana Burr Bradley, PhD, FGSA, FAGHE, of the University of Maryland Baltimore County. AGHE’s Clark Tibbitts Award was established in 1980 and named for an architect of the field of gerontological education. The award is given each year to an individual or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of gerontology and geriatrics education. Hiram J. Friedsam was the professor, co-founder, and director of the Center for Studies in Aging and dean of the School of Community Service at the University of Northern Texas. Dr. Friedsam was an outstanding teacher, researcher, colleague, and mentor to students, faculty, and administrators, as well as a past president of AGHE. The purpose of this award is to recognize those who emulate Dr. Friedsam’s excellence in mentorship.

THE MARGRET M. AND PAUL B. BALTES AWARD LECTURE AND PRESENTATION

JOSEPH T. FREEMAN AWARD AND EXCELLENCE IN REHABILITATION OF AGING PERSONS AWARD PRESENTATIONS AND LECTURES

Abstract The Joseph T. Freeman Award lecture will feature an address by the 2024 Freeman Award recipient Ali Ahmed, MD, FGSA of the Washing DC VA Medical Center and the 2024 Excellence in Rehabilitation of Aging Persons Award recipient Roger A. Fielding, PhD, FGSA of Tufts University. The Joseph T. Freeman Award is a lectureship in geriatrics awarded to a prominent clinician in the field of aging, both in research and practice. The award was established in 1977 through a bequest from a patient’s estate as a tribute to Dr. Joseph T. Freeman. The Excellence in Rehabilitation of Aging Persons Award is designed to acknowledge outstanding contributions in the field of the rehabilitation of aging individuals.

The enduring importance of the "fine cuts" approach to psychology: EPS Mid-Career Award Lecture 2024.

In this article, I take a selective review of work undertaken by my colleagues and me in an attempt to show the enduring importance of the "fine cuts" approach to psychology. This approach highlights the importance of causal, specific, and falsifiable psychological models, and the rigorous experimental designs needed to test them. I hope the review shows that it is still necessary to consider cognition, despite the exciting advances in Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and computational modelling characterising our field.

ACE2, From the Kidney to SARS-CoV-2: Donald Seldin Award Lecture 2023.

ACE2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) is a monocarboxypeptidase that cleaves Ang II (angiotensin II) among other substrates. ACE2 is present in the cell membrane of many organs, most abundantly in epithelial cells of kidney proximal tubules and the small intestine, and also exists in soluble forms in plasma and body fluids. Membrane-bound ACE2 exerts a renoprotective action by metabolizing Ang II and therefore attenuating the undesirable actions of excess Ang II. Therefore, soluble ACE2, by downregulating this peptide, may exert a therapeutic action. Our laboratory has designed ACE2 truncates that pass the glomerular filtration barrier to target the kidney renin-angiotensin system directly and, therefore, compensate for loss of kidney membrane-bound ACE2. Membrane-bound ACE2 is also the essential receptor for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Soluble ACE2 proteins have been studied as a way to intercept SARS-CoV-2 from binding to membrane-bound ACE2 and prevent cell entry of SARS-CoV-2 altogether. We bioengineered a soluble ACE2 protein, termed ACE2 618-DDC-ABD, with increased binding affinity for SARS-CoV-2 and prolonged duration of action, which, when administered intranasally, provides near-complete protection from lethality in k18hACE2 mice infected with different SARS-CoV-2 variants. The main advantage of soluble ACE2 proteins for the neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 is their immediate onset of action and universality for current and future emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. It is notable that ACE2 is critically involved in 2 dissimilar functions: as a receptor for cell entry of many coronaviruses and as an enzyme in the metabolism of Ang II, and yet in both cases, it is a therapeutic target.

2024 Charles F. Prentice Medal award lecture: Moments of inspiration.

In this Prentice Medal Award lecture, I shall recount my career in vision science in the context of three types of inspiration-"being inspired," "personal inspiration," and "inspiring others." My research has derived inspiration from a variety of sources, such as contemporary and historical research doyens in the ophthalmic field and beyond, artists, Greek philosophers, and abstract constructs such as principles and adages. A given moment of inspiration can range from being a profound experience to a subtle realization during a quiet moment of reflection. Here I shall recount the primary research domains of vision science that have defined my academic career in the context of the three types of inspiration defined above. These research domains are ophthalmic markers of diabetic neuropathy, ocular response to contact lens wear, contact lens-induced parainflammation, contact lens-associated microbial keratitis, grading scales for contact lens complications, contact lens prescribing surveys, material properties of contact lenses, contact lens compliance, history of contact lenses, ocular thermography, and ophthalmic bibliometrics. The notions of "being inspired" and "personal inspiration" are necessarily subjective, although I have endeavored to present them here in a scientific context. Conversely, the notion of "inspiring others" can be objectively gauged, at least in part, by counting article citations or the number of times articles are read online or downloaded from a journal website. In conclusion, my research in the vision sciences has been inspired by others, derived from personal ideas, and perhaps in turn has inspired others.

Building open scholarly infrastructure: A journey of collaboration and diplomacy

This article expands on the Miles Conrad Award lecture delivered at the NISO Plus 2024 conference. Drawing from over three decades in scholarly publishing, including twenty-four years at Crossref, Edward Pentz, the Executive Director of Crossref, explores the critical role of collaboration and diplomacy in developing open scholarly infrastructure. The piece examines key inflection points in scholarly communication, lessons learned from collaborative initiatives, and future challenges and opportunities in the field. It also reflects on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in shaping the future of open scholarly infrastructure.

Nancy Elinor Adler (1946-2024).

Nancy was born in Manhattan in 1946. As a young girl, she was charmed by books about the teenage detective Nancy Drew and felt the books gave her an indelible enthusiasm for solving mysteries. Nancy graduated from Wellesley College (1968) and received her PhD from Harvard (1973) in social psychology. An APA Fellow, Nancy is one of the most cited scientists (top 0.1%) in the world (2022, Clarivate). She was a pioneer who shaped several key movements, including defining the field of Health Psychology, and deepening global recognition of social determinants of health. She won numerous honors and awards, including the David Rall Medal from the National Academy of Medicine. Nancy died at 77 at her home, on January 4, 2024, surrounded by loving family. The UCSF Center for Health and Community is establishing an annual Nancy Elinor Adler Endowed Lectureship Award for scholars who "illuminate the field of social and health disparities and conduct meaningful interventions.
