Design and characterization of a hybrid PET detector with DOI capability.

Monolithic or semi-monolithic detectors are attractive for positron emission tomography (PET) scanners with depth-of-interaction (DOI) capability. However, they often require complicated calibrations to determine the interaction positions of gamma photons. We introduce a novel hybrid detector design that combines pixelated and semi-monolithic elements to achieve DOI capability while simplifying the calibrations for positioning. A prototype detector with eight hybrid lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO)layers having dimensions of 25.8×12.9×15mm3 was constructed. The energy-weighted and energy-squared weighted averages were used for estimating the x- (pixelated direction) and y-positions (non-pixelated direction). Pseudo-pixels were defined as discrete areas on the flood image based on the crystal look-up table (LUT). The intrinsic spatial resolutions in the pixelated and non-pixelated directions were measured. The ratio of the maximum to the sum of the multipixel photon counter (MPPC) signals was used to estimate the DOI positions. The coincidence timing resolution (CTR) was measured using the average and energy-weighted average of the earliest n time stamps. Two energy windows of 250-700 and 400-600keV were applied for the measurements. The pattern of the flood images showed discrete event clusters, demonstrating that simple calibrations for determining the x- and y-positions of events could be achieved. Under 400-600keV energy window, the average intrinsic spatial resolutions were 1.15 and 1.34mm for the pixelated and non-pixelated directions; the average DOI resolution of the second row of pseudo-pixels was 5.1mm in full width at half maximum (FWHM); when using the energy-weighted average of the earliest four-time stamps, the best CTR of 350ps was achieved. Applying a broader energy window of 250-700keV only slightly degrades the DOI resolution while maintaining the intrinsic resolution; the best CTR degrades to 410ps. The proposed hybrid detector concept was verified, and a prototype detector showed high performance for 3D positioning and timing resolution. The novel detector concept shows promise for preclinical and clinical PET scanners with DOI capability.

Evaluation of monolithic crystal detector with dual-ended readout utilizing multiplexing method

Objective. Monolithic crystal detectors are increasingly being applied in positron emission tomography (PET) devices owing to their excellent depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution capabilities and high detection efficiency. In this study, we constructed and evaluated a dual-ended readout monolithic crystal detector based on a multiplexing method. Approach. We employed two 12 × 12 silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays for readout, and the signals from the 12 × 12 array were merged into 12 X and 12 Y channels using channel multiplexing. In 2D reconstruction, three methods based on the centre of gravity (COG) were compared, and the concept of thresholds was introduced. Furthermore, a light convolutional neural network (CNN) was employed for testing. To enhance depth localization resolution, we proposed a method by utilizing the mutual information from both ends of the SiPMs. The source width and collimation effect were simulated using GEANT4, and the intrinsic spatial resolution was separated from the measured values. Main results. At an operational voltage of 29 V for the SiPM, an energy resolution of approximately 12.5 % was achieved. By subtracting a 0.8 % threshold from the total energy in every channel, a 2D spatial resolution of approximately 0.90 mm full width at half maximum (FWHM) can be obtained. Furthermore, a higher level of resolution, approximately 0.80 mm FWHM, was achieved using a CNN, with some alleviation of edge effects. With the proposed DOI method, a significant 1.36 mm FWHM average DOI resolution can be achieved. Additionally, it was found that polishing and black coating on the crystal surface yielded smaller edge effects compared to a rough surface with a black coating. Significance. The introduction of a threshold in COG method and a dual-ended readout scheme can lead to excellent spatial resolution for monolithic crystal detectors, which can help to develop PET systems with both high sensitivity and high spatial resolution.

DOI- and TOF-capable PET array detector using double-ended light readout and stripline-based row and column electronic readout.

We investigate a highly multiplexing readout for depth-of-interaction (DOI) and time-of-flight PET detector consisting of an N×N crystals whose light outputs at the front and back ends are detected by using silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). The front N×N SiPM array is read by using a stripline (SL) configured to support discrimination of the row position of the signal-producing crystal. The back N×N SiPM array is similarly read by an SL for column discrimination. Hence, the detector has only four outputs. We built 4×4 and 8×8 detector modules (DM) by using 3.0×3.0×20 mm3 lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicates. The outputs were sampled and processed offline. For both DMs, crystal discrimination was successful. For the 4×4 DM, we obtained an average energy resolution (ER) of 14.1%, an average DOI resolution of 2.5 mm, a non DOI-corrected coincidence resolving time (CRT), measured in coincidence with a single-pixel reference detector, of about 495 ps. For the 8×8 DM, the average ER, average DOI resolution and average CRT were 16.4%, 2.9 mm, and 641 ps, respectively. We identified the intercrystal scattering as a probable cause for the CRT deterioration when the DM was increased from 4×4 to 8×8.

A multi-resolution TOF-DOI detector for human brain dedicated PET scanner

Objective. We propose a single-ended readout, multi-resolution detector design that can achieve high spatial, depth-of-interaction (DOI), and time-of-flight (TOF) resolutions, as well as high sensitivity for human brain-dedicated positron emission tomography (PET) scanners. Approach. The detector comprised two layers of LYSO crystal arrays and a lightguide in between. The top (gamma ray entrance) layer consisted of a 16 × 16 array of 1.53 × 1.53 × 6 mm3 LYSO crystals for providing high spatial resolution. The bottom layer consisted of an 8 × 8 array of 3.0 × 3.0 × 15 mm3 LYSO crystals that were one-to-one coupled to an 8 × 8 multipixel photon counter (MPPC) array for providing high TOF resolution. The 2 mm thick lightguide introduces inter-crystal light sharing that causes variations of the light distribution patterns for high DOI resolution. The detector was read out by a PETsys TOFPET2 application-specific integrated circuit. Main result. The top and bottom layers were distinguished by a convolutional neural network with 97% accuracy. All crystals in the top and bottom layers were resolved. The inter-crystal scatter (ICS) events in the bottom layer were identified, and the measured average DOI resolution of the bottom layer was 4.1 mm. The coincidence time resolution (CTR) for the top–top, top-bottom, and bottom–bottom coincidences was 476 ps, 405 ps, and 298 ps, respectively. When ICS events were excluded from the bottom layer, the CTR of the bottom–bottom coincidence was 277 ps. Significance. The top layer of the proposed two-layer detector achieved a high spatial resolution and the bottom layer achieved a high TOF resolution. Together with its high DOI resolution and detection efficiency, the proposed detector is well suited for next-generation high-performance brain-dedicated PET scanners.

Effect of depth of interaction resolution on the spatial resolution of SIAT aPET

Objective. Spatial resolution is a crucial parameter for a positron emission tomography (PET) scanner. The spatial resolution of a high-resolution small animal PET scanner is significantly influenced by the effect of depth of interaction (DOI) uncertainty. The aim of this work is to investigate the impact of DOI resolution on the spatial resolution of a small animal PET scanner called SIAT aPET and determine the required DOI resolution to achieve nearly uniform spatial resolution within the field of view (FOV). Approach. The SIAT aPET detectors utilize 1.0 × 1.0 × 20 mm3 crystals, with an average DOI resolution of ∼2 mm. A default number of 16 DOI bins are used during data acquisition. First, a Na-22 point source was scanned in the center of the axial FOV with different radial offsets. Then, a Derenzo phantom was scanned at radial offsets of 0 and 15 mm in the center axial FOV. The measured DOI information was rebinned to 1, 2, 4 and 8 DOI bins to mimic different DOI resolutions of the detectors during image reconstruction. Main results. Significant artifacts were observed in images obtained from both the point source and Derenzo phantom when using only one DOI bin. When accurate measurement of DOI is not achieved, degradation in spatial resolution is more pronounced in the radial direction compared to tangential and axial directions for large radial offsets. The radial spatial resolutions at a 30 mm radial offset are 5.05, 2.62, 1.24, 0.86 and 0.78 mm when using 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 DOI bins, respectively. The axial spatial resolution improved from ∼1.3 to 0.7 mm as the number of DOI bins increased from 1 to 16 at radial offsets from 0 to 25 mm. Two DOI bins are required to obtain images without significant artifacts. The required DOI resolution is about three times the crystal width of SIAT aPET to achieve a uniform submillimeter spatial resolution within the central 60 mm FOV and resolve the 1 mm rods of the Derenzo phantom at both positions.

Depth-of-interaction positron emission tomography detector with 45° tilted silicon photomultipliers using dual-ended signal readout.

Small-animal positron emission tomography (PET) systems are widely used in molecular imaging research and drug development. There is also growing interest in organ-dedicated clinical PET systems. In these small-diameter PET systems, the measurement of the depth-of-interaction (DOI) of annihilation photons in scintillation crystals allows for the correction of parallax error in PET system, leading to an improvement on the spatial resolution uniformity. The DOI information is also useful for improving the timing resolution of PET system as it enables the correction of DOI-dependent time walk in the arrival time difference measurement of annihilation photon pairs. The dual-ended readout scheme is one of the most widely investigated DOI measurement methods, which collects visible photons using a pair of photosensors located at both ends of the scintillation crystal. Although the dual-ended readout allows for simple and accurate DOI estimation, it requires twice the number of photosensors compared to the single-ended readout scheme. To effectively reduce the number of photosensors in a dual-ended readout scheme, we propose a novel PET detector configuration that employs 45° tilted and sparsely arranged silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). In this configuration, the angle between the scintillation crystal and SiPM is 45°. Therefore, and thus, the diagonal of the scintillation crystal matches one of the lateral sides of the SiPM. Accordingly, it allows for the use of SiPM device larger than the scintillation crystal, thereby improving light collection efficiency with a higher fill factor and reducing SiPM quantity. In addition, all scintillation crystals can achieve more uniform performance than other dual-ended readout methods with a sparse SiPM arrangement because 50% of the scintillation crystal cross section is commonly in contact with the SiPM. To demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed concept, we implemented a PET detector that employs a 4 4 LSO block with a single crystal dimension of 3.03 × 3.03 × 20 mm3 and a 45° tilted SiPM array. The 45° tilted SiPM array consists of 2 × 3 SiPM elements at the top ("Top SiPM") and 3 × 2 SiPM elements at the bottom ("Bottom SiPM"). Each crystal element of the 4 × 4 LSO block is optically coupled with each quarter section of the Top SiPM and Bottom SiPM pair. To characterize the performance of the PET detector, the energy, DOI, and timing resolution were measured for all 16 crystals. The energy data was obtained by summing all the charges from the Top SiPMs and Bottom SiPMs, and the DOI resolution was measured by irradiating the side of the crystal block at five different depths (2, 6, 10, 14, and 18mm). The timing was estimated by averaging the arrival time of the annihilation photons measured at the Top SiPMs and Bottom SiPMs (Method 1). The DOI-dependent time-walk effect was further corrected by using DOI information and statistical variations in the trigger times at the Top SiPMs and Bottom SiPMs (Method 2). The average DOI resolution of the proposed PET detector was 2.5mm, thereby resolving the DOI at five different depths, and the average energy resolution was 16% full width at half maximum (FWHM). When Methods 1 and 2 were applied, the coincidence timing resolutions were 448 and 411ps FWHM, respectively. We expect that our novel low-cost PET detector design with 45° tilted SiPMs and a dual-ended readout scheme would be a suitable solution for constructing a high-resolution PET system with DOI encoding capability.

Performance Characteristics of a Dual-Sided Position-Sensitive Sparse-Sensor Detector for Gamma-ray Imaging.

We characterize the performance of a dualsided position-sensitive sparse sensor (DS-PS3) array detector for positron emission tomography (PET). The DS-PS3 detector is designed as a high performance, cost effective PET detector for organ-specific imaging systems (e.g., brain, breast, etc.). Two sparse 4-by-4 arrays of silicon photomultipliers (18.5% SiPM fill-factor) coupled through segmented light guide are used to readout a 15-by-15 array of 2-mm-pitch, 20-mm-long LSYO crystals. Uniform flood data were used for crystal identification, depth determination, and position-dependent energy resolution. Intrinsic-spatial and depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolutions were determined by stepping a collimated gamma-ray source over the front and side, respectively. We measured an average intrinsic spatial resolution of 2.14 ± 0.07 mm full width at half maximum (FWHM). DOI FWHM resolution varied from 2.2 mm for crystals over sensors to 5.3 mm for crystals between sensors. Average DOI resolution was 3.6 ± 0.8 mm FHWM. Average energy resolution for the detector module was 16.6% with a range of 11.3% to 25.8%. We have demonstrated use of a dual-sided sparse sensor arrays to enable low-cost high-performance decoding of three-dimensional positioning within a PET detector using an 18.5% sensor fill-factor.

A high resolution and high detection efficiency depth-encoding detector for brain positron emission tomography based on a 0.75 mm pitch scintillator array

The quantitative accuracy and precision of brain positron emission tomography (PET) studies can be considerably improved using dedicated brain PET scanners with a uniform high resolution and a high sensitivity across the brain volume. One approach to building such a system is to construct the PET scanner using depth-of-interaction (DOI) encoding detectors with finely segmented and thick crystal arrays. In this paper, the performance of a DOI PET detector based on two 16 × 16 arrays of 2 × 2 mm^2 SiPMs coupled to both ends of a 44 × 44 array of 0.69 × 0.69 × 30 mm3 polished LYSO crystals was evaluated at different temperatures (-9∘C, 0∘C, 10∘C, and 20∘C) for brain PET applications. The pitch size of the LYSO array is 0.75 mm. The flood histograms show that all the crystal elements in the LYSO array can be resolved except some edge crystals, due to the limited light sharing. The average energy resolution, average DOI resolution, and average timing resolution across crystal elements are 21.1 ± 3.0%, 3.47 ± 0.17 mm, and 1.38 ± 0.09 ns, respectively, which were obtained at a bias voltage of 56.5 V and a temperature of 0∘C.

Sub-2 mm depth of interaction localization in PET detectors with prismatoid light guide arrays and single-ended readout using convolutional neural networks.

Depth of interaction (DOI) readout in PET imaging has been researched in efforts to mitigate parallax error, which would enable the development of small diameter, high-resolution PET scanners. However, DOI PET has not yet been commercialized due to the lack of practical, cost-effective, and data efficient DOI readout methods. The rationale for this study was to develop a supervised machine learning algorithm for DOI estimation in PET that can be trained and deployed on unique sets of crystals. Depth collimated flood data was experimentally acquired using a Na-22 source with a depth-encoding single-ended readout Prism-PET module consisting of lutetium yttrium orthosilicate (LYSO) crystals coupled 4-to-1 to 3×3 silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) pixels on one end and a segmented prismatoid light guide array on the other end. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained to perform DOI estimation on data from center, edge and corner crystals in the Prism-PET module using (a) all non-zero readout pixels and (b) only the 4 highest readout signals per event. CNN testing was performed on data from crystals not included in CNN training. An average DOI resolution of 1.84mm full width at half maximum (FWHM) across all crystals was achieved when using all readout signals per event with the CNN compared to 3.04mm FWHM DOI resolution using classical estimation. When using only the 4 highest signals per event, an average DOI resolution of 1.92mm FWHM was achieved, representing only a 4% dropoff in CNN performance compared to using all non-zero pixels per event. Our CNN-based DOI estimation algorithm provides the best reported DOI resolution in a single-ended readout module and can be readily deployed on crystals not used for model training.

Development and initial characterization of a high-resolution PET detector module with DOI

Organ-dedicated PET scanners are becoming more prevalent because of their advantages in higher sensitivity, improved image quality, and lower cost. Detectors utilized in these scanners have finer pixel size with depth of interaction (DOI) capability. This work presents a LYSO(Ce) detector module with DOI capability which has the potential to be scaled up to a high-resolution small animal or organ-dedicated PET system. For DOI capability, a submodule with one LYSO block detector utilizing PETsys TOFPET2 application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) was previously developed in our lab. We scaled up the submodule and optimized the configuration to allow for a compact housing of the dual-readout boards in one side of the blocks by designing a high-speed dual-readout cable to maintain the original pin-to-pin relationship between the Samtec connectors. The module size is 53.8 × 57.8 mm2. Each module has 2 × 2 LYSO blocks, each LYSO block consists of 4 × 4 LYSO units, and each LYSO unit contains a 6 × 6 array of 1 × 1 × 20 mm3 LYSO crystals. The four lateral surfaces of LYSO crystal were mechanically ground to W14, and the two end surfaces were polished. Two ends of the LYSO crystal are optically connected to SiPM for DOI measurement. Eight LYSO blocks performance including energy, timing, and DOI resolution is characterized with a single LYSO slab. The in-panel and orthogonal-panel spatial resolution of the two modules with 107.4 mm distance between each other are measured at 9 positions within the field of view (FOV) with a 22Na source. Results show that the average energy, timing, and DOI resolution of all LYSO blocks are 16.13% ± 1.01% at 511 keV, 658.03 ± 15.18 ps, and 2.62 ± 0.06 mm, respectively. The energy and timing resolution of two modules are 16.35% and 0.86 ns, respectively. The in-panel and orthogonal-panel spatial resolution of the two modules at the FOV center are 1.9 and 4.4 mm respectively.

Improving depth-of-interaction resolution in pixellated PET detectors using neural networks

Parallax error is a common issue in high-resolution preclinical positron emission tomography (PET) scanners as well as in clinical scanners that have a long axial field of view (FOV), which increases estimation uncertainty of the annihilation position and therefore degrades the spatial resolution. A way to address this issue is depth-of-interaction (DOI) estimation. In this work we propose two machine learning-based algorithms, a dense and a convolutional neural network (NN), as well as a multiple linear regression (MLR)-based method to estimate DOI in depolished PET detector arrays with single-sided readout. The algorithms were tested on an 8× 8 array of 1.53× 1.53× 15 mm3 crystals and a 4× 4 array of 3.1× 3.1× 15 mm3 crystals, both made of Ce:LYSO scintillators and coupled to a 4× 4 array of 3× 3 mm3 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). Using the conventional linear DOI estimation method resulted in an average DOI resolution of 3.76 mm and 3.51 mm FWHM for the 8× 8 and the 4× 4 arrays, respectively. Application of MLR outperformed the conventional method with average DOI resolutions of 3.25 mm and 3.33 mm FWHM, respectively. Using the machine learning approaches further improved the DOI resolution, to an average DOI resolution of 2.99 mm and 3.14 mm FWHM, respectively, and additionally improved the uniformity of the DOI resolution in both arrays. Lastly, preliminary results obtained by using only a section of the crystal array for training showed that the NN-based methods could be used to reduce the number of calibration steps required for each detector array.

Performance of a depth encoding PET detector module using light sharing and single-ended readout with SiPMs

Detectors with depth encoding capability, good energy resolution and good timing resolution are required to develop high performance whole body and total body PET scanners. In this work, an 8 × 8 LYSO array with crystal size of 3 × 3 × 20 mm3 was fabricated by using coupling materials that included 5 mm optical glue, 9 mm triangle ESR reflector and 6 mm rectangle ESR reflector from the top to the bottom in between adjacent crystals in one direction. The LYSO array was single-ended read out by an 8 × 8 SiPM array with one-to-one coupling. Row and column summing circuit was used to read out the SiPM signals. The depth of interaction (DOI) of the detector was measured with the depth dependent light sharing between adjacent crystals while maintaining acceptable energy resolution and timing resolution. The performance of the detector module was evaluated. All crystals can be clearly resolved from the measured flood histogram. An average DOI resolution of 4.62 mm and an average timing resolution of 518 ps are obtained for events with E > 400 keV. The average energy resolution of the detector is 13.5%. This work provides a cost-effective depth encoding detector module that can be used to build high performance whole body and total body PET scanners in the future.

Performance of a high-resolution depth encoding PET detector using barium sulfate reflector

Small animal positron emission tomography (PET) is a well-established imaging modality in preclinical biomedical research. The performance of current small animal PET scanners is mainly limited by the detector performance and depth-encoding detectors are required to simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. In this work, the performance of a high-resolution dual-ended readout lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) array using barium sulfate powder (BaSO4) as the inter-crystal reflector was measured for the first time and compared to that of a LYSO array using the most commonly used enhanced specular reflector (ESR). Both LYSO arrays have 18 × 18 crystals and the crystal size is about 0.62 × 0.62 × 20 mm3. The LYSO arrays are readout by two position-sensitive photomultiplier tubes (PSPMTs) from both ends. The flood histograms, energy resolution, depth of interaction (DOI) resolution and timing resolution were measured. The flood histograms of the LYSO array with BaSO4 reflector is much better than that of the LYSO array with ESR reflector. For the BaSO4 array, all crystals can be clearly resolved. For the ESR array, all crystals in one direction can be clearly resolved, but the edge 2–3 columns of the crystals in the other direction cannot be resolved. The average energy resolution of the BaSO4 and ESR arrays are 15.2% and 15.3%, respectively. The average DOI resolution of the BaSO4 array is 2.19 mm, which is 24% worse than the 1.76 mm DOI resolution of the ESR array. The timing resolution of both arrays is ~1.6 ns. The LYSO array with the new BaSO4 reflector provided an much better flood histogram in a high resolution dual-ended readout PET detectors as compared to the ESR array, and will be used to develop a small animal PET scanner that can simultaneously achieve uniform high spatial resolution, high sensitivity and low cost.

A Novel Method for <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\gamma - \text{photons}$</tex-math> </inline-formula> Depth-of-Interaction Detection in Monolithic Scintillation Crystals

Achieved spatial resolution of the PET systems is often limited by the parallax error due to the lack of information about the Depth of Interaction (DoI) inside the crystal of the incoming 511 keV annihilation photons. The smaller the diameter of the PET ring and the thicker the scintillator are, the more this error affects imaging performance. In this work, a DoI calculator suitable for monolithic scintillation crystals and based on the shape of the scintillation light distribution at the photodetector surface has been proposed. To test the estimator performance, a test PET module with a $50 \times 50 \times 20\; \hbox{mm}$ monolithic LYSO crystal coupled to a $12 \times 12$ SiPM array has been employed. In addition, for calibration and validation of the method, Geant4 simulations have been also used. The key result of the application of the proposed DoI estimator is obtaining a continuous DoI estimation with an average DoI resolution of about 5 mm in the 20 mm-thick crystal. Benefiting from the DoI estimation capabilities of the method, it has been also possible to achieve additional important goals, first of all reducing the parallax error. First, because the scintillation light collection varies as a function of the 3D position of the interaction of the annihilation photon inside the crystal, a method to correct this response variation via a proper 3D look-up-table is proposed. This has led to an improvement of about 35% in energy resolution. Moreover, a DoI-dependent position algorithm has been proposed, allowing an improvement of both planar (X-Y) position linearity and planar spatial resolution. This algorithm is specifically developed for the rows/columns multi-channel readout logic, that reduces the number of independent channels from ${\rm N} \times {\rm N}$ to ${\rm N} + {\rm N}$ , where N is the number of SiPM photodetection elements (12 in our case) in each row and column. This development was performed in the framework of the MindView PET/MRI brain imaging project.

Towards monolithic scintillator based TOF-PET systems: practical methods for detector calibration and operation

Gamma-ray detectors based on thick monolithic scintillator crystals can achieve spatial resolutions <2 mm full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) and coincidence resolving times (CRTs) better than 200 ps FWHM. Moreover, they provide high sensitivity and depth-of-interaction (DOI) information. While these are excellent characteristics for clinical time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET), the application of monolithic scintillators has so far been hampered by the lengthy and complex procedures needed for position- and time-of-interaction estimation. Here, the algorithms previously developed in our group are revised to make the calibration and operation of a large number of monolithic scintillator detectors in a TOF-PET system practical. In particular, the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) classification method for x,y-position estimation is accelerated with an algorithm that quickly preselects only the most useful reference events, reducing the computation time for position estimation by a factor of ~200 compared to the previously published k-NN 1D method. Also, the procedures for estimating the DOI and time of interaction are revised to enable full detector calibration by means of fan-beam or flood irradiations only. Moreover, a new technique is presented to allow the use of events in which some of the photosensor pixel values and/or timestamps are missing (e.g. due to dead time), so as to further increase system sensitivity. The accelerated methods were tested on a monolithic scintillator detector specifically developed for clinical PET applications, consisting of a 32 mm × 32 mm × 22 mm LYSO : Ce crystal coupled to a digital photon counter (DPC) array. This resulted in a spatial resolution of 1.7 mm FWHM, an average DOI resolution of 3.7 mm FWHM, and a CRT of 214 ps. Moreover, the possibility of using events missing the information of up to 16 out of 64 photosensor pixels is shown. This results in only a small deterioration of the detector performance.

Development of high-resolution detector module with depth of interaction identification for positron emission tomography

We have developed a Time-of-flight high resolution and commercially viable detector module for the application in small PET scanners. A new approach to depth of interaction (DOI) encoding with low complexity for a pixelated crystal array using a single side readout and 4-to-1 coupling between scintillators and photodetectors was investigated. In this method the DOI information is estimated using the light sharing technique. The detector module is a 1.53×1.53×15mm3 matrix of 8×8 LYSO scintillator with lateral surfaces optically depolished separated by reflective foils. The crystal array is optically coupled to 4×4 silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) array and readout by a high performance front-end ASIC with TDC capability (50ps time binning). The results show an excellent crystal identification for all the scintillators in the matrix, a timing resolution of 530ps, an average DOI resolution of 5.17mm FWHM and an average energy resolution of 18.29% FWHM.

Continuous depth-of-interaction measurement in a single-layer pixelated crystal array using a single-ended readout

We propose a depth-of-interaction (DOI)-encoding method to extract continuous DOI information using a single-layer scintillation crystal array with single-ended readout for cost-effective high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET). DOI information is estimated by different light dispersions along the x- and y-directions tailored by the geometric shape of reflectors around the crystals. The detector module comprised a 22 × 22 array of unpolished LGSO crystals (2.0 × 2.0 × 20 mm3). A multi-anode photomultiplier tube with 64 anodes measured light dispersion in the crystal array. Gain non-uniformity of each anode was corrected by an analogue gain compensation circuit. DOI information was determined from peaks in the x and y anode-signal distributions normalized by the total energy of the distribution. Average DOI resolution (full width at half maximum, FWHM) over all crystals and depths was estimated to be 4.2 mm. Average energy resolution from the 2 to 18 mm DOI positions was 11.3% ± 0.79%, with 13% difference in photo-peak positions. Average time resolutions (FWHM) were 320–356 ps. Energy, time and DOI resolutions were uniform over all crystal positions except at the array's edge. This DOI-PET detector shows promise for applications that require high resolution and sensitivity at low cost.

Characterization of a high-resolution hybrid DOI detector for a dedicated breast PET/CT scanner

The aim of this study is to design and test a new high-resolution hybrid depth of interaction (DOI) detector for a dedicated breast PET/CT scanner. Two detectors have been designed and built. The completed detectors are based on a 14 × 14 array of 1.5 × 1.5 × 20 mm3 unpolished lutetium orthosilicate scintillation crystals, with each element coated in a 50 μm layer of reflective material. The detector is read out from both ends using a position-sensitive photomultiplier tube (PSPMT) and a large active area (20 × 20 mm2) avalanche photodiode (APD) to enable acquisition of DOI information. Nuclear instrumentation modules were used to characterize the detectors’ performances in terms of timing, intrinsic spatial resolution (ISR) and energy resolution, as well as DOI resolution with a dual-ended readout configuration. Measurements with the APD were performed at a temperature of 10 °C. All crystals were identified at all depths, even though the signal amplitude from the PSPMT decreases with depth away from it. We measured a timing resolution of 2.4 ns, and an average energy resolution of 19%. The mean ISR was measured to be 1.2 mm for crystals in the central row of the array for detectors in the face-to-face position. Two off-center positions were measured corresponding to 26° and 51° oblique photon incidence, and the mean ISR at these positions was 1.5 and 1.7 mm, respectively. The average DOI resolution across all crystals and depths was measured to be 2.9 mm (including the beam width of 0.6 mm). This detector design shows good promise as a high-resolution detector for a dedicated breast PET/CT scanner.

Optimizing PET DOI Resolution With Crystal Coating and Length

In the last few years, one of the main research programs for PET systems has been the improvement of spatial resolution using Depth Of Interaction (DOI) information. In the context of developing a new PET system dedicated to small animals with axially oriented LYSO crystals and DOI capability, we have investigated the influence of the crystal coating and its length on the DOI resolution. The proposed PET system is composed of four detection modules arranged around the animal. Each module consists in 768 LYSO crystals read at both ends by multichannel plate photodetectors. The particular geometry combined with an inner diameter of 61.2 mm, lead to high detection efficiency close to the system solid angle. The LYSO crystal is chosen for its light yield of 33 ph/keV and its attenuation length of 11.2 mm at 511 keV. To obtain a transverse spatial resolution of 1 mm, the section of the crystal was fixed to 1.5 mm. To achieve a DOI resolution close to 1 mm, measurements have been performed on different LYSO crystal coatings with a length ranging from 25 mm to 35 mm. Each crystal is positioned on an xy translation stage and read out at both ends by H3164-10 Hamamatsu PMTs. The DOI information is then derived every 0.5 mm along the crystal extent. The use of an electronic collimation leads to a <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">22</sup> Na source beam size of (1.58 ± 0.04) mm reaching the crystal. The optimized coating in terms of packing fraction and DOI resolution is found to be a mixture made with 30% TiO <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sub> powder in a PMMA binder. With this appropriate coating, an average DOI resolution of (0.82 ± 0.13) mm can be achieved with a 25 mm crystal length using a 20% photopeak energy window. The resolution degrades to (1.39 ± 0.16) mm when a wide-open energy window is used. Those values are corrected for the source beam size. Using this experimental proposal, a matrix of LYSO crystals has been built reaching a packing fraction of 93%. In this study, we demonstrate that using a 1.5 × 1.5 × 25 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</sup> LYSO crystal, a DOI resolution of less than a millimeter can be achieved while keeping a high packing fraction for a system detection efficiency close to 15%.

New Continuous Miniature Crystal Element (cMiCE) Detector Geometries.

Continuous miniature crystal element (cMiCE) detectors are a potentially lower cost alternative to high resolution discrete crystal designs. We report on the intrinsic spatial resolution performance for two cMiCE PET detector designs with depth of interaction (DOI) positioning capability. The first detector utilizes a 50 mm by 50 mm by 8 mm LYSO crystal coupled to a 64 channel, multi-anode PMT. It provides 4 layers of DOI information. The crystal has beveled edges along two of its sides to improve the detector packing when placed in a ring geometry. The second detector utilizes a 50 mm by 50 mm by 15 mm, rectangular LYSO crystal coupled to a 64 channel, multi-anode PMT. It provides up to 15 layers of DOI information. The average intrinsic X, Y spatial resolution for the 8 mm thick, truncated crystal detector was 1.33 +/- 0.31 mm FWHM (45.6 mm by 46.6 mm useful imaging area). The average DOI resolution was 3.5 +/- 0.22 mm. The average intrinsic X, Y spatial resolution for the 15 mm thick crystal detector was 1.74 +/- 0.35 mm FWHM (44.6 mm by 44.6 mm useful imaging area). In addition, the average DOI spatial resolution for 56 test points spanning a 26.4 mm by 12.2 mm region of the crystal was 4.80 +/- 0.36 mm. We believe the 8 mm thick truncated crystal design is suitable for mouse imaging while the 15 mm thick crystal design is more suited for human organ specific imaging systems (e.g., breast and brain).
