Impacts of ADHD Symptomatology on the Response to Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy with Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome Patients.

(1) Background: Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common comorbidity of TS that adds further impairment. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) has shown efficacy in treating tics, yet its effectiveness in individuals with TS and comorbid ADHD remains unclear. Also, it is suggested that ADHD characteristics like executive dysfunction and inattention could hinder the response to CBT. This study aims to compare the response to CBT for tics and its maintenance six months post-therapy among TS individuals with and without ADHD symptoms. (2) Methods: In this study, 55 TS participants who completed 14-week CBT for tics were split into high (TS+) or low (TS-) ADHD symptomatology groups. Outcomes were evaluated using the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) regarding global tic severity and motor and vocal tic frequency post-CBT and at a 6-month follow-up. (3) Results: No significant group difference was found regarding improvements post-CBT (n = 55), nor the maintenance six months later (n = 45). (4) Conclusions: ADHD symptoms may not hinder the response to CBT or its maintenance, suggesting that TS individuals with ADHD symptoms may not require specialized CBT interventions.

Raman Spectra of Blood Serum as Holistic Biomarker for Differential Auxiliary Diagnoses of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Adults

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition, impacting approximately 10% of children globally. A significant proportion, around 30–50%, of those diagnosed during childhood continue to manifest ADHD symptoms into adulthood, with 2–5% of adults experiencing the condition. The existing diagnostic framework for ADHD relies on clinical assessments and interviews conducted by healthcare professionals. This diagnostic process is complicated by the disorder’s overlap in symptoms and frequent comorbidities with other neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly bipolar disorder during its manic phase, adding complexity to achieving accurate and timely diagnoses. Despite extensive efforts to identify reliable biomarkers that could enhance the clinical diagnosis, this objective remains elusive. In this study, Raman spectroscopy, combined with multivariate statistical methods, was employed to construct a model based on the analysis of blood serum samples. The developed partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model demonstrated an ability to differentiate between individuals with ADHD, healthy individuals, and those diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the manic phase, with a total accuracy of 97.4%. The innovative approach in this model involves utilizing the entire Raman spectrum, within the 450–1720 cm−1 range, as a comprehensive representation of the biochemical blood serum setting, thus serving as a holistic spectroscopic biomarker. This method circumvents the necessity to pinpoint specific chemical substances associated with the disorders, eliminating the reliance on specific molecular biomarkers. Moreover, the developed model relies on a sensitive and reliable technique that is cost-effective and rapid, presenting itself as a promising complementary diagnostic tool for clinical settings. The potential for Raman spectroscopy to contribute to the diagnostic process suggests a step forward in addressing the challenges associated with accurately identifying and distinguishing ADHD from other related conditions.

Impulsivity and attention deficit-hyperactivity symptoms among patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: a case-control study

ABSTRACT Background and objectives Multiple sclerosis(MS) is a progressive, autoimmune, neurodegenerative disease.Studies have suggested that autoimmune diseases play a role in the pathogenesis of Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).We aim to evaluate ADHD symptoms among patients with RRMS(pwRRMS). Methods The study included 48 RRMS patients and 54 healthy controls. ADHD symptoms were assessed by self-report questionnaires and performance tests.Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Turgay’s Turkish version of Adult-ADD/ADHD (A-ADHD), Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11), and World Health Organization Quality of Life-Short Form (WHOQoL-Bref) were completed by the participants.Stroop Colour and Word Interference Test – TBAG Form (SCWT); was used for assessing cognitive function by a trained psychiatrist. Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) were used to evaluate by pwRRMS. Results PwRRMS had significantly higher attention-deficit scores and poor performance in all SCWT subtests.All SCWT scores were positively correlated with MS duration.A-ADHD-Total scores were negatively correlated with the age of MS diagnosis.A moderate positive correlation was found between falls and A-ADHD-total scores, and psychomotor speed.A moderate negative correlation was found between WHOQoL-Bref scores and BID, FSS, ADHD-Attention Deficit, SCWT-3, SCWT-5, and SCWT-interference.In multivariate linear regression analyzes, attention-deficit predicted EDSS positively, while depressive symptoms, attention-deficit, and psychomotor speed time were negative predictors of physical health quality. Conclusions In pwRRMS, cognitive dysfunctions such as response inhibition and intervention control, which are symptoms of attention deficit and impulsivity, have been shown to reduce the overall QoL. Among the strategies to reduce the impact of RRMS disease on patients’ lives, it is essential to implement programs to prevent depression and increase cognitive reserve.

Does attention deficit hyperactivity disorder worsen family functioning and parenting styles? A case control study

Objective A bidirectional relationship between family functioning and parenting styles and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is proposed. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of ADHD symptoms on parenting styles and the general functionality of the family as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety. Methods 73 children with ADHD (56%) and 56 controls (43%) (a total of 129 participants, 31% female, 69% male) with a mean age of 11.3 (7–17, n: 129) were included in the study, which was conducted in Gaziantep University Hospital Child Psychiatry Department in 2022. The participants completed psychometric scales. Results Parents of children with ADHD showed higher positive parenting scores than the control group (p < 0.05). Inconsistent discipline scores were substantially higher in the ADHD combined subtype (14.38 ± 5.2) than in the attention deficit dominant group (17.59 ± 3.96) In addition, a strong correlation was found between familial functionality scores and ADHD severity in the ADHD attention deficit dominant subtype (r:0.601; p:0.027) and as ADHD severity increased, family functionality decreased. Conclusions This study shows that parents of children with ADHD have different parenting styles and ADHD affects the overall functionality of the family in the Turkish sample.

Relationship between hair cortisol concentrations and cognitive functioning in adolescents with ADHD

ABSTRACT Background: Our study aimed to explore whether the hair cortisol concentration (HCC), a measure of long-term cortisol output, is associated with poorer cognitive functioning in adolescents with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We further aimed to test the potential moderating effects of sex and childhood maltreatment. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, fifty-three adolescents with ADHD were studied. The ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD-RS) and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) were administered. Seven cognitive tasks from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) were administered, and two cognitive factors (attention and memory and executive functioning) were identified by confirmatory factor analysis. A 3-cm hair sample from the posterior vertex region of the head was obtained. HCCs were determined by a high-sensitivity enzyme immunoassay kit. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to explore the association between HCCs and either cognitive performance or ADHD severity while adjusting for sex, childhood maltreatment and the ADHD-RS total score. Results: Sex moderated the relationship between HCCs and attention/memory confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) scores, with better performance in boys with higher HCCs. HCCs were not associated with executive functioning or ADHD symptoms. Childhood maltreatment was associated with inattention symptoms in adolescents with ADHD. Conclusions: Our study suggests that HCCs are positively associated with attention and memory performance in adolescents with ADHD, with a moderating effect of sex (the relationship is strongest in boys).

Electrophysiological evidence for increased auditory crossmodal activity in adult ADHD.

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by core symptoms of inattention, and/or impulsivity and hyperactivity. In order to understand the basis for this multifaceted disorder, the investigation of sensory processing aberrancies recently reaches more interest. For example, during the processing of auditory stimuli comparable low sensory thresholds account for symptoms like higher distractibility and auditory hypersensitivity in patients with ADHD. It has further been shown that deficiencies not only exist on an intramodal, but also on a multimodal level. There is evidence that the visual cortex shows more activation during a focused auditory task in adults with ADHD than in healthy controls. This crossmodal activation is interpreted as the reallocation of more attentional resources to the visual domain as well as deficient sensory inhibition. In this study, we used, for the first time, electroencephalography to identify a potential abnormal regulated crossmodal activation in adult ADHD. 15 adult subjects with clinically diagnosed ADHD and 14 healthy controls comparable in age and gender were included. ERP components P50, P100, N100, P200 and N200 were measured during the performance of a unimodal auditory and visual discrimination task in a block design. Sensory profiles and ADHD symptoms were assessed with inattention as well as childhood ADHD scores. For evaluating intramodal and crossmodal activations, we chose four EEG channels for statistical analysis and group-wise comparison. At the occipital channel O2 that reflects possible crossmodal activations, a significantly enhanced P200 amplitude was measured in the patient group. At the intramodal channels, a significantly enhanced N200 amplitude was observed in the control group. Statistical analysis of behavioral data showed poorer performance of subjects with ADHD as well as higher discrimination thresholds. Further, the correlation of the assessed sensory profiles with the EEG parameters revealed a negative correlation between the P200 component and sensation seeking behavior. Our findings show increased auditory crossmodal activity that might reflect an altered stimulus processing resource allocation in ADHD. This might induce consequences for later, higher order attentional deployment. Further, the enhanced P200 amplitude might reflect more sensory registration and therefore deficient inhibition mechanisms in adults with ADHD.

High Sugar Intake Increases ADHD Symptoms

Attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs in 5–12% of children in the world. ADHD has the characteristics of difficulty concentrating (focusing), being easily distracted, not being easily tired, excessive activity, impulsiveness, decreased executive function, fidgeting, excessive talking, difficulty waiting for one's turn, and often disturbing others. External factors that play an important role in the treatment of ADHD are nutrition and diet. Various nutrition experts have stated that nutrition plays an important role in neurodevelopment. Increased consumption of sugar calories is associated with decreased activity in areas associated with dopamine (posterior midbrain, dorsolateral/orbitofrontal cortices) and taste processing areas (postcentral gyrus) during sugar consumption. The method used in this study uses study literature collected from various reference journal articles from 2007–2023 and international journal articles that are interconnected. All the articles obtained state that sugar can disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters in the body of people with ADHD, namely dopamine and norepinephrine, which will increase the symptoms of ADHD. The significance value obtained is below p 0.05, which means that there is an effect of sugar on the symptoms of ADHD. Based on several sources of journal articles, it can be concluded that consuming sugar in children with ADHD will increase the symptoms of ADHD, such as inattentiveness and impulsivity. However, sugar consumption in normal children does not cause ADHD, but it is possible to experience other diseases.

Background/Aims: We aimed to examine the relationship between attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and bedtime procrastination.&#x0D; Materials and Methods: Five hundred fifty-three university students participated in our study. All participants, in turn, answered the sociodemographic data form, The Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS v1.1), Bedtime Procrastination Scale (BPS), Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS), and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). All participants were divided into two groups, probable ADHD and non-ADHD, according to the ASRS score. We compared sociodemographic data, sleep routines, and psychometric scales between these two groups. Finally, we analyzed the factors that could predict bedtime procrastination by hierarchical regression analysis.&#x0D; Results: The mean age of the participants was 20.55 ± 2.17. Most participants were female and unmarried (69.6% and 98.2%, respectively). BPS, ISI, and ASRS scores were significantly higher in the ADHD group than in the non-ADHD group (p &lt; 0.01). BSCS score was significantly lower in the ADHD group than in the non-ADHD group (p &lt; 0.01). Sleep duration was significantly lower in the ADHD group than in the non-ADHD group (p &lt; 0.01). The correlation coefficients between ASRS and ISI, BPS, and BSCS were 0.461, 0.268, and -0.442, respectively (p &lt; 0.01). Self-control and ADHD symptoms separately predicted bedtime procrastination with approximately the same variance (%4 vs. %3.9).&#x0D; Conclusions: Clinicians should evaluate bedtime procrastination in individuals with adult ADHD by clinical interview or BPS. Individuals with adult ADHD with bedtime procrastination should be assisted with cognitive behavioral therapy-insomnia and sleep hygiene.

Genetic background to attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder symptoms at the age of 5 years: the role of sleep duration.

We studied the associations between polygenic risk score (PRS) for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and (1) ADHD symptoms in 5-year-old children, (2) sleep duration throughout childhood, and (3) the interaction between PRS for ADHD and short sleep duration relative to ADHD symptoms at 5 years. This study is based on the population-based CHILD-SLEEP birth cohort (N = 1420 children). PRS was used to quantitate the genetic risk for ADHD. Parent-reported ADHD symptoms at 5 years were obtained from 714 children, using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Five-to-Fifteen (FTF). Our primary outcomes were SDQ-hyperactivity and FTF-ADHD total scores. Parent-reported sleep duration was measured at 3, 8, 18, 24 months, and 5 years in the whole sample and actigraphy-based sleep duration at 2 and 24 months in a subsample. PRS for ADHD associated with SDQ-hyperactivity (β = 0.214, p = .012) and FTF-ADHD total (β = 0.639, p = .011), and FTF-inattention and hyperactivity subscale scores (β = 0.315, p = .017 and β = 0.324, p = .030), but not with sleep duration at any time point. Significant interactions were found between high PRS for ADHD and parent-reported short sleep throughout childhood in FTF-ADHD total score (F = 4.28, p = .039) and FTF-inattention subscale (F = 4.66, p = .031). We did not find any significant interaction between high PRS for ADHD and actigraphy-based short sleep. Parent-reported short sleep moderates the association between genetic risk of ADHD and ADHD symptoms in early childhood in the general population, so that children with short sleep, in combination with high genetic risk for ADHD, could be at highest risk for ADHD symptoms.

Non-pharmacological Treatment of ADHD in preschoolers, a systematic review Objective: Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be diagnosed from the age of 36 months. The Superior Health Council recommends a parent training program to be offered for children from the age of three when they exhibit behavioral problems suggestive of ADHD. This systematic review investigates the evidence for non-pharmacological interventions. It also investigates if there is a preferential choice. Methods: A search was performed in Pubmed and Web of Science. Randomized controlled trials since 2013 investigating non-pharmacological interventions for ADHD in children under six years of age were included. Exclusion criteria were language and articles in which the effect on ADHD symptoms was not described. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized trials. Results: Eighteen articles were included, most of which described parent training. Parent training had a moderate to large effect on ADHD symptoms reported by parents (non blinded). The observed effects persisted for up to 12 months. A preferential choice in specific parent training program was not found. Other interventions included teacher training, cognitive training and yoga. Conclusion: Despite limited evidence from blinded raters, parent training is recommended as a treatment for preschoolers with ADHD. Alternatives have not yet been sufficiently researched.

The role of inflammation in the prospective associations between early childhood sleep problems and ADHD at 10 years: findings from a UK birth cohort study.

Several underlying mechanisms potentially account for the link between sleep and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), including inflammation. However, studies so far have been cross sectional. We investigate (a) the association between early childhood sleep and probable ADHD diagnosis in childhood and (b) whether childhood circulating inflammatory markers mediate these prospective associations. Data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children were available for 7,658 10-year-old children. Parent-reported sleep duration, night awakening frequency and regular sleep routines were collected at 3.5 years. The Development and Wellbeing Assessment was administered to capture children with clinically relevant ADHD symptoms, or probable ADHD diagnosis. Blood samples were collected at 9 years, from which two inflammatory markers were obtained [interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP)]. Logistic regression analyses were applied to investigate the associations between sleep variables at 3.5 years and probable ADHD diagnosis at 10 years. Further, path analysis was applied to examine the potential mediating role of inflammation at 9 years (as measured by CRP and IL-6) in the associations between early sleep and ADHD at 10 years. Less regular sleep routines (OR=0.51, 95% CI=0.28-0.93, p=.029), shorter nighttime sleep (OR=0.70, 95% CI=0.56-0.89, p=.004) and higher night awakening frequency (OR=1.27, 95% CI=1.06-1.52, p=.009) at 3.5 years were associated with higher odds of ADHD at 10 years. Further, IL-6 at 9 years, but not CRP, mediated the association between irregular sleep routines and ADHD (bias-corrected estimate, -0.002; p=.005) and between night awakening and ADHD (bias-corrected estimate, 0.002; p=.003). Several sleep problems in early childhood constitute a risk factor for probable ADHD diagnosis at 10 years. Further, these associations are partially mediated by IL-6 at 9 years. These results open a new research vista to the pathophysiology of ADHD and highlight sleep and inflammation as potential preventative targets for ADHD.

Adult Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms and Internet Addiction in College Students: Prevalence and Differential Associations

&lt;p style="text-align:justify"&gt;This paper presents an investigation that aims to: 1) explore the relations between core symptoms of adult Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and several typical Internet activities, and 2) compare the predictive power of two core symptoms of ADHD- inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity- in predicting Internet addiction. Methods: A total of 2016 Chinese college students participated in this study. The ADHD symptoms were assessed using Conners self-rating scales and DSM-5 semi-structured interviews. Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (SCID-5) was used to exclude other psychiatric disorders. Chen’s Internet addiction scale (CIAS) was used to evaluate Internet addiction. Information about Internet activities (e.g., online gaming) was collected through a self-constructed questionnaire. Results: The ratio of Internet addiction problems among individuals with ADHD symptoms is significantly higher than in ordinary individuals (48.9% vs. 14.3%). Further, each core ADHD symptom has unique relations with different types of Internet activities. Specifically, both core ADHD symptoms are negatively associated with information downloading and online learning, and positively associated with online gaming, while online shopping is only associated with hyperactivity/impulsivity. Furthermore, both core ADHD symptoms are significant predictors of Internet addiction, especially inattention. Conclusion: College students with ADHD symptoms are at a higher risk of having Internet addiction than peers without ADHD symptoms. For individuals with ADHD symptoms and excessive online gaming and/or online shopping behaviors, the probability of having Internet addiction is even higher. These findings have important implications for identifying risk factors of Internet addiction and preventing Internet addiction in Higher Education settings.&lt;/p&gt;

Third-generation cognitive behavioral therapy versus treatment-as-usual for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder: a multicenter randomized controlled trial

BackgroundThis study aims to compare improvements in attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom severity between a group of ADHD children and parents undergoing a new therapeutic program based on third-generation cognitive behavioral therapy (Hyper-mCBT) and a similar group undergoing treatment-as-usual with the Barkley program.MethodsTwo hundred forty-eight children diagnosed with ADHD will be randomly assigned to either a Hyper-mCBT program or a Barkley program. This is a multicenter randomized (1:1), 2 parallel-group, superiority trial with evaluator blinding and stratification according to center and methylphenidate treatment. The Hyper-mCBT program consists in a series of 16 simultaneous-but-separate therapy sessions for parents and for children.DiscussionMore effective psychotherapeutic approaches are needed for ADHD children. Pharmacotherapy seems to be more effective in reducing ADHD symptoms but it is not always helpful, it carries side effects, and it is rejected by many parents/professionals. Results for psychotherapy programs for ADHD are inconsistent although several studies have shown clinical improvements. This trial will substantiate encouraging preliminary results of an innovative psychotherapy program for both parents and children.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT03437772. ADHD symptoms persist even when PTSD symptoms progress: An EMDR case report

Although many studies report that attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms will improve after eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), it is thought that the symptoms of ADHD, which is an organic disease, will not improve with psychotherapy. In this case report, significant improvements were reported in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms with EMDR therapy in a 9-year-old boy, who was previously followed up with the diagnosis of ADHD and who was sexually abused by his cousin at the age of 7 years. A total of 5 EMDR sessions that lasted for an average of 45 min were applied to the patient. The symptoms of the case were followed up with Atilla Turgay Screening and Evaluation Scale that is based on the DSM-IV and with Post-traumatic Stress Index for Conduct Disorders in Children and Adolescents. At the end of the therapy and after the 4-week follow-up, the ADHD symptoms continued at the same level as they were before the traumatic event, and the symptoms of the oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) improved more when compared with the period before the event, and significant improvements were also detected in PTSD symptoms. However, ODD symptoms can mimic PTSD symptoms; EMDR may therefore be good. It was also observed that the bilateral stimulation types that were employed during EMDR should be changed more frequently than normal. As a conclusion, it was found that EMDR can be used as an effective psychotherapy method in children with ADHD and PTSD for PTSD and ODD symptoms except for ADHD symptoms.

Disinhibition of Primitive Reflexes in Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder: Insight Into Specific Mechanisms in Girls and Boys.

Objective: Cognitive and motor disintegration and other functional disturbances in various neuropsychiatric disorders may be related to inhibitory deficits that may manifest as a persistence or re-expression of primitive reflexes and few recent data suggest that these deficits may occur in Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).Methods: We have tested a hypothesis to which extent ADHD symptoms and balance deficits are related to persisting primitive reflexes, such as Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) and Symmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR) in 80 medication-naïve children with ADHD (40 boys and 40 girls) in the school age (8–11 years) and compared these data with a control group of 60 children (30 boys and 30 girls).Results: These data show new finding that ADHD symptoms and balance deficits are strongly and specifically associated with persistent ATNR in girls and STNR in boys.Conclusions: These results provide first evidence in medical literature that ADHD in girls and boys is specifically related to distinguished neurological developmental mechanisms related to disinhibition of primitive reflexes.

Increased prevalence of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptomatology in patients with familial Mediterranean fever.

Previous studies suggest that exposure to inflammation in infancy may increase the risk for attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We studied the ADHD manifestations among 124 familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) patients and examined the relationship between FMF patient characteristics and ADHD. Clinical, demographic, and genetic data were abstracted from patients' medical records and supplemented by information obtained during clinic visits. ADHD manifestations were assessed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) questionnaire. ADHD was diagnosed in 42 (32.8%) FMF patients, a rate significantly higher than in unselected populations (∼8%). A majority (n = 27, 64.3%) had combined inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive manifestations. Eight (19%) had predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and seven (16.6%) had predominantly inattentive symptoms. FMF patients with severe manifestations reported more ADHD symptoms. FMF patients with ADHD symptoms were less adherent to their treatment regimen, with only 61.9% of the patients with ADHD symptoms adhering to colchicine therapy compared to 92.7% of the patients without ADHD symptoms. The high prevalence of ADHD characteristics in children with FMF may support the neuroimmune hypothesis that chronic inflammation increases the risk for ADHD. Children with FMF should be screened for ADHD as its presence may adversely affect adherence to treatment.

Examining the roles of cognitive flexibility, emotion recognition, and metacognitions in adult Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder with predominantly inattentive presentation.

The evaluation of cognitive functions in Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is fundamental to improve the efficacy of therapeutic interventions. However, the role of specific higher-order cognitive functions in adult ADHD, including cognitive flexibility, emotion recognition, and metacognitions, remains unclear. Therefore, in the current study, we aimed to examine these three distinct higher-order cognitive functions among adult ADHD individuals. Forty patients with ADHD with predominantly inattentive presentation and 42 healthy controls participated in the study. The Adult Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder Scale (AADHDS), the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET), and the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) were administered. Results indicated that patients with ADHD had worse metacognitions scores, in specific subdimensions, relative to healthy controls. However, cognitive flexibility and emotion recognition did not differ between the groups. Moreover, the cognitive confidence subdimension of the MCQ-30 was found to be sole significant predictor in the attention deficit subdimension of the AADHDS. Our findings suggest that lack of cognitive confidence may contribute to ADHD symptomatology despite regularly functioning cognitive flexibility and emotion recognition. Therefore, metacognitions could be a suitable target to alleviate the severity of ADHD symptoms.

PLS-DA Model for the Evaluation of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents through Blood Serum FTIR Spectra.

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood. It affects ~10% of the world’s population of children, and about 30–50% of those diagnosed in childhood continue to show ADHD symptoms later, with 2–5% of adults having the condition. Current diagnosis of ADHD is based on the clinical evaluation of the patient, and on interviews performed by clinicians with parents and teachers of the children, which, together with the fact that it shares common symptoms and frequent comorbidities with other neurodevelopmental disorders, makes the accurate and timely diagnosis of the disorder a difficult task. Despite the large effort to identify reliable biomarkers that can be used in a clinical environment to support clinical diagnosis, this goal has never been achieved hitherto. In the present study, infrared spectroscopy was used together with multivariate statistical methods (hierarchical clustering and partial least-squares discriminant analysis) to develop a model based on the spectra of blood serum samples that is able to distinguish ADHD patients from healthy individuals. The developed model used an approach where the whole infrared spectrum (in the 3700–900 cm−1 range) was taken as a holistic imprint of the biochemical blood serum environment (spectroscopic biomarker), overcoming the need for the search of any particular chemical substance associated with the disorder (molecular biomarker). The developed model is based on a sensitive and reliable technique, which is cheap and fast, thus appearing promising to use as a complementary diagnostic tool in the clinical environment.

Association of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder symptoms with visual functioning difficulties in Grade 1 learners

Background. Children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can experience visual motor control difficulties. Therefore, early identification of such difficulties is important. Objective. To determine whether ADHD symptoms are associated with visual motor control difficulties in Grade 1 learners. Method. In total, 382 children participated in the study. To determine the presence of ADHD symptoms, the educators completed the Strength and Weaknesses of ADHD symptoms Normal behaviour scale (SWAN) for each learner after six months of observing their class behaviour. Two kinderkineticists applied two tests, namely the Pyfer Sensory Input Systems Screening test and one subtest of the Quick Neurological Screening Test-II (QNST-II). Fisher’s exact test was used to determine if ADHD symptoms were associated with visual functioning difficulties. Results. ADHD symptoms were found to be significantly associated with 10 out of 21 visual functioning difficulties. These skills included fixation with both eyes ( p =0.0491), fixation with the right eye ( p =0.0003), fixation with the left eye ( p =0.0042), ocular alignment of the right eye ( p =0.0029), visual tracking with both eyes on X shape ( p =0.0284), visual tracking with the right eye ( p =0.0301), and visual tacking with the left eye on a circle ( p =0.0032). Furthermore, ADHD symptoms were significantly associated with the QNST-II tracking test normal range ( p =0.0028), moderate discrepancy ( p =0.0028) and severe discrepancy ( p =0.0075). Conclusion. ADHD symptoms are significantly associated with approximately half of the tested visual functioning of Grade 1 learners. Appropriate interventions should be implemented by professionals to assist these learners.

Screening for adult attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder among military parents: A pilot study

IntroductionThe prevalence of adult Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been investigated in the general population by multiple studies. However, few studies have focused on identifying its prevalence in the military population, particularly among military parents of children with ADHD.ObjectivesThe aim of our study was to screen for adult ADHD among military parents of ADHD children followed-up at the child and adolescent psychiatry department in the Military Hospital of Instruction of Tunis, Tunisia.MethodsThis prospective study was carried among military parents (one or both parents belonging to the national army) of ADHD children. Children were diagnosed with ADHD based on the 5th Diagnostic and Statistical Manual ADHD criteria and the Conners Comprehensive Behavior Rating Scale. Whereas adult ADHD was screened for using the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale-V1.1.ResultsFifteen children and twenty-nine parents were included in the study: sixteen of the parents were military members and thirteen were civilian spouses. Eight (50%) of the sixteen military parents, and four (30,7%) of the civilian spouses were screened positive for ADHD. Whereas 73% of these children had at least one parent screened positive for ADHD, and 53% had at least one military parent screened positive for ADHD. These results suggest a high prevalence of adult ADHD among this population.ConclusionsADHD occurs in childhood and may persist into adulthood. The findings of this study indicate that ADHD symptoms are not limited to the youth and are common in military population. Implications on screening, management, preventive measures and research should be discussed.
