Study on the effects of a novel imidazoline siliconophilic collector in the desilication process of magnesite: Separation experiments, adsorption mechanisms, and separation model

This study innovatively introduced heptadecenyl amine ethyl imidazoline quaternary ammonium salt (ODD) as a siliconophilic flotation collector, effectively facilitating the achievement of high-efficiency separation of magnesite from quartz. ODD exhibits unique properties such as high selectivity and environmental friendliness. Through a comprehensive series of experiments, including flotation tests, zeta potential characterization, atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), the flotation performance and selective adsorption mechanisms of ODD were thoroughly investigated. The experiments demonstrated that at a pH of 7.00 and an ODD concentration of 40 mg/L, quartz achieved a flotation recovery rate of 95.16 %, while magnesite was only 2.99 %, underscoring the high selectivity of ODD in mineral separation. Zeta potential measurements indicated that ODD exhibits strong adsorption interactions with quartz over magnesite. AFM observations confirmed that ODD forms significant adsorption structures on quartz surfaces, in contrast to weaker interactions with magnesite. FTIR analysis further revealed the robust interactions between ODD and quartz through hydrogen bonds and electrostatic forces, which were significantly diminished on magnesite surfaces. ToF-SIMS analysis provided direct evidence of ODD’s selective adsorption on quartz, contributing to a better understanding of the flotation mechanisms involved. This research not only offers a novel approach for the purification of magnesite and effective removal of quartz but also demonstrates the potential of ODD as an eco-friendly collector in mineral processing, potentially advancing a green transformation in the industry. The findings provide a solid theoretical and experimental basis for future industrial applications and innovative development of flotation collectors.

Improvement in optical nonlinearity of spiral square Mn-based nanostructures with increasing the number of square sides

Spiral square Mn-based nanostructures with different numbers of square sides were grown on glass substrate using the glancing angle deposition method. The crystallinity of the products was determined by X-ray diffraction. The surface properties of the synthesized nanostructures were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). 2D AFM images have been used for more detail on grain growth evolution and height distribution. The band gaps of the nanostructures were determined using the Tauc formula in the range of 2.72–3.06 eV. It was observed a decrease in band gap energy of spiral square Mn-based nanostructures with increasing the number of square sides. Nonlinear optical measurements of synthesized samples were performed using a Z-scan setup under a CW laser irradiated at 532 nm. Values of the order of 10−4 cm W−1 and 10−7 cm2 W−1 were calculated for nonlinear absorption coefficients and refraction indices of spiral square nanostructures, respectively. This investigation revealed an increase of about 1.7 times for nonlinear optical parameters of Mn-based nanostructures with increasing the number of square sides from 8 up to 10 that is significant increment. These results suggest spiral square Mn-based nanostructures as a potential material for application in optics.

Terahertz s-SNOM Imaging of a Single Cell with Nanoscale Resolution.

Terahertz scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy is a robust spectral detection technique with a nanoscale resolution. However, there are still major challenges in investigating the heterogeneity of cell membrane components in individual cells. Here, we present a novel and comprehensive analytical approach for detecting and investigating heterogeneity in cell membrane components at the single-cell level. In comparison to the resolution of the topographical atomic force microscopy image, the spatial resolution of the terahertz near-field amplitude image is 3 times that of the former. This ultrafine resolution enables the compositional distribution in the cell membrane, such as the distribution of extracellular vesicles, to be finely characterized. Furthermore, via extraction of the near-field absorption images at specific frequencies, the visualization and compositional difference analysis of cell membrane components can be presented in detail. These findings have significant implications for the intuitive and visual analysis of cell development and disease evolutionary pathways.

Template bacteria-free fabrication of surface imprinted polymer-based biosensor for E. coli detection using photolithographic mimics: Hacking bacterial adhesion

As one class of molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs), surface imprinted polymer (SIP)-based biosensors show great potential in direct whole-bacteria detection. Micro-contact imprinting, that involves stamping the template bacteria immobilized on a substrate into a pre-polymerized polymer matrix, is the most straightforward and prominent method to obtain SIP-based biosensors. However, the major drawbacks of the method arise from the requirement for fresh template bacteria and often non-reproducible bacteria distribution on the stamp substrate. Herein, we developed a positive master stamp containing photolithographic mimics of the template bacteria (E. coli) enabling reproducible fabrication of biomimetic SIP-based biosensors without the need for the “real” bacteria cells. By using atomic force and scanning electron microscopy imaging techniques, respectively, the E. coli-capturing ability of the SIP samples was tested, and compared with non-imprinted polymer (NIP)-based samples and control SIP samples, in which the cavity geometry does not match with E. coli cells. It was revealed that the presence of the biomimetic E. coli imprints with a specifically designed geometry increases the sensor E. coli-capturing ability by an “imprinting factor” of about 3. These findings show the importance of geometry-guided physical recognition in bacterial detection using SIP-based biosensors. In addition, this imprinting strategy was employed to interdigitated electrodes and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) chips. E. coli detection performance of the sensors was demonstrated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and QCM measurements with dissipation monitoring technique (QCM-D).

Enhancing Bovine Embryo Development In Vitro Using Oil-in-Water Nanoemulsions as Specific Carriers for Essential Lipids.

Worldwide meat consumption and production have nearly quintupled in the last 60 years. In this context, research and the application of new technologies related to animal reproduction have evolved in an accelerated way. The objective of the present study was to apply nanoemulsions (NEs) as carriers of lipids to feed bovine embryos in culture media and verify their impact on the development of embryos produced in vitro. The NEs were characterized by particle size, polydispersity, size distribution, physical stability, morphology using atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface tension, density, pH, and rheological behavior. The NEs were prepared by the emulsification/evaporation technique. A central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was used to optimize the NE fabrication parameters. The three optimized formulations used in the embryo application showed an emulsion stability index (ESI) between 0.046 and 0.086, which reflects high stability. The mean droplet diameter analyzed by laser diffraction was approximately 70-80 nm, suggesting a possible transit across the embryonic zona pellucida with pores of an average 90 nm in diameter. AFM images clearly confirm the morphology of spherical droplets with a mean droplet diameter of less than 100 nm. The optimized formulations added during the higher embryonic genome activation phase in bovine embryos enhanced early embryonic development.

Role of Substrate on the Fractal Characteristics of Nanostructure Surfaces of Electrodeposited Nickel Thin Films

This study investigates the structure, morphological, and roughness properties of electrodeposited nickel thin films grown on different substrates, that is, silicon, copper, and gold. X‐ray diffraction analysis reveals that the Ni coatings exhibit a face‐centered‐cubic phase, regardless of the substrate used, although the texture is mainly influenced by the substrate. Atomic force microscopy images show that larger grains are obtained with gold substrates, while smaller ones are observed with copper and silicon substrates, in agreement with scanning electron microscopy. The results demonstrate that both topological and fractal characteristics of the Ni thin films are significantly influenced by the type of substrate. Statistical parameters are quantified to compare the surface morphology of the different samples. Fractal analysis reveals that the fractal dimensions of all surfaces range between 2 and 3, indicating self‐affinity. Fractal succolarity and lacunarity are measured to assess the penetration of a liquid into the surface and the distribution of gaps in the Ni film surfaces, respectively. Minkowski functionals are utilized for topological analysis to characterize the internal structure of the Ni thin films. The observed differences in roughness characteristics provide evidence that the type of substrate affects the nucleation and growth of surface features during electrodeposition.

Green, simple, and rapid construction of coating on aramid fiber surfaces and their effects on the mechanical properties of aramid fiber/rubber composite interfaces

First, the surface of aramid fibers (AF) was etched using plasma to enhance the roughness of the AF. The coating was then formed on the surface of the AF by solution dip-coating using a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES) and in-situ UV cured for 10 s. The study examined the impact of varying etching times on the interfacial properties between AF and natural rubber (NR). The atomic force microscopy images showed that the surface roughness gradually increased with the increase of etching time, and the interphase width gradually increased. A modulus interfacial layer with a platform role was established between high-modulus aramid fibers and low-modulus rubber. And when the etching time was 4 s/cm, the H pull-out force increased by 193.51% compared to the original AF and reached 18.08 N of the maximum strength. Comprehensively comparing the single fiber tensile strength, composite tensile strength and composite fatigue resistance, the AF-reinforced NR composites can be optimized when the treatment time is 3 s/cm. In sum up, this method of constructing a coating on the AF surface by etching first will lead to a great improvement in the interfacial properties between AF and NR, this method enables simple, green and continuous construction of coating on AF surfaces, making them have great application prospects in the field of aviation tires.

Nanocellulose extraction from acai bagasse through mixed acid hydrolysis and oxidative techniques

Exploring new biomass sources for nanocellulose (NC) extraction is crucial in elevating the economic value of readily available renewable resources. This study compares NC extracted from acai (Euterpe oleracea) bagasse using different methods: mixed acid hydrolysis, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxy (TEMPO) mediation, and ammonium persulfate (APS) oxidations. A comprehensive analysis investigates the impact of each treatment on the physical-chemical properties of the nanoparticles, including chemical structure, crystallinity, morphology, and thermal and suspension stability. NCs obtained through mixed acid hydrolysis exhibit the highest crystallinity (62 %) and low sulfate groups on their surfaces. Consequently, they demonstrate excellent thermal stability but poor colloidal stability in water. Oxidized NCs undergo chemical modification, converting alcoholic groups into carboxyl, resulting in NCs with zeta potentials ranging between −25.30 ± 0.81 and − 27.49 ± 1.07 mV. APS oxidation produces nanoparticles with superior thermal stability compared to TEMPO oxidation. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) images reveal that all nanocelluloses share characteristics of nanofibers (CNFs). This comprehensive characterization highlights the potential of acai bagasse for yielding high-added-value bioproducts suitable for versatile applications.

Evaluation in mice of cell-free produced CT584 as a Chlamydia vaccine antigen.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent bacterial sexually transmitted pathogen worldwide. Since chlamydial infection is largely asymptomatic with the potential for serious complications, a preventative vaccine is likely the most viable long-term answer to this public health threat. Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) utilizes the cellular protein manufacturing machinery decoupled from the requirement for maintaining cellular viability, offering the potential for flexible, rapid, and de-centralized production of recombinant protein vaccine antigens. Here, we use CFPS to produce the putative chlamydial type three secretion system (T3SS) needle-tip protein, CT584, for use as a vaccine antigen in mouse models. High-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) imaging and computer simulations confirm that CFPS-produced CT584 retains a native-like structure prior to immunization. Female mice were primed with CT584 adjuvanted with CpG-1826 intranasally (i.n.) or CpG-1826 + Montanide ISA 720 intramuscularly (i.m.), followed four-weeks later by an i.m. boost before respiratory challenge with 104 inclusion forming units (IFU) of Chlamydia muridarum. Immunization with CT584 generated robust antibody responses but weak cell mediated immunity and failed to protect against i.n. challenge as demonstrated by body weight loss, increased lungs' weights and the presence of high numbers of IFUs in the lungs. While CT584 alone may not be the ideal vaccine candidate, the speed and flexibility with which CFPS can be used to produce other potential chlamydial antigens makes it an attractive technique for antigen production.

Statistical analysis of aging micro-characteristics for asphalt binder AFM images based on neural network classification

To further evaluate the effect of aging behavior on microstructure for asphalt binder, the atomic force microscope (AFM) images of asphalt binder were studied by neural network classification technology, and its aging micro-characteristics were analyzed statistically. Firstly, AFM equipment was used to test 90# virgin asphalt binder and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) modified asphalt binder commonly used in engineering, and the typical micromorphology AFM images of asphalt binders were obtained. Subsequently, the asphalt binder AFM images were preliminatively analyzed, and the micro-characteristics of AFM images before and after aging were compared, including the “bee structure” characteristics, distribution law and surface structure roughness. Finally, the asphalt binder AFM images were further analyzed by neural network classification, and the change of “bee structure” was statistically calculated and analyzed, and its aging micro-characteristics were quantitatively evaluated. The results show that it is feasible for neural network classification to be applied to the statistical analysis of asphalt binder AFM images, and it can further describe and evaluate the aging micro-characteristics of asphalt binder. Aging behavior reduces the proportion of intermediate category areas in asphalt binder AFM images and increases the “bee structure” areas. The cumulative percentage curve of asphalt binder AFM images is smoother (each category is more uniform), indicating that the asphalt binder performance tended to be stable after aging. The results further enrich the description of asphalt binder AFM images, and provide a new way to explore the micro-morphology of asphalt binder.

Evidences support that dengue virus can impart broad-spectrum immunity against betacoronaviruses in dengue endemic regions.

COVID-19 tended to be less aggressive in dengue endemic regions. Conversely, dengue cases plummeted in dengue endemic zones during the active years of the pandemic (2020-2021). We and others have demonstrated serological cross-reactivity between these two viruses of different families. We further demonstrated that COVID-19 serum samples that were cross-reactive in dengue virus (DV) serological tests, "cross-neutralized" all DV serotypes in Huh7 cells. Here we showed by co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging that severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-coronavirus (CoV)-2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike (S) protein subunit S1 and S2 monoclonal antibodies can indeed, bind to DV particles. Likewise, DV envelope antibodies (DV E Abs) showed high docking frequency with other human pathogenic beta-CoVs and murine hepatitis virus-1 (MHV-1). SARS-CoV-2 Ab didn't show docking or Co-IP with MHV-1 supporting poor cross-protection among CoVs. DV E Abs showed binding to MHV-1 (AFM, Co-IP, and immunofluorescence) and prepandemic dengue patients'serum samples even "cross-neutralized" MHV-1 plaques in cell culture. Furthermore, dengue serum samples showed marked inhibition potential in a surrogate virus-based competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, used for determining neutralizing Abs against SARS-CoV-2 S protein receptor-binding domain in COVID-19 serum samples. We therefore, provide multiple evidence as to why CoVs are epidemiologically less prevalent in highly dengue endemic regions globally.

Thickness measurement of thin films using atomic force microscopy based scratching

Thin-film thickness measurements using atomic force microscopy (AFM) comprise two steps: 1. AFM scratching in order to produce an exposed film edge, and 2. subsequent AFM measurement of the corresponding step height across the exposed edge. Although the technique is known, many open questions have limited its wider applications. In order to clarify the open questions, here we first demonstrate how to determine the normal force applied during the scratching in contact mode needed to completely remove films from substrates. In order to determine film thickness from processed AFM images, we discuss two procedures based on the histogram method and polynomial step-function fitting. Mechanisms of the scratching process are elucidated by the analysis of lateral forces and their enhancement during the film peeling. Phase maps of scratched domains recorded in amplitude modulation AFM (tapping) mode display a clear contrast compared to pristine films. Therefore, we suggest their utilization as simple indicators of spatial domains with completely removed films. As an example, here the measurements were done on polymer films fabricated by layer-by-layer deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes composed of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate), while the applicability of the presented method on other materials is discussed in detail.

Temperature modulation enables in situ growth of gallium oxide nanostructures on thin films exhibiting diverse morphologies

In this study, we successfully synthesized three gallium oxide thin films on (0001)-faceted Al2O3 substrates using hydrogen-reduced chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at different deposition temperatures, resulting in distinct morphologies and crystalline phases. These films consist of two pure-phase β-Ga2O3 films and one mixed-phase film comprising both β- and ε-Ga2O3 phases. The mixed-phase samples were subsequently annealed at high temperatures to obtain pure-phase β-Ga2O3 thin films. Furthermore, by precisely controlling the growth temperature, we achieved in-situ formation of Ga2O3 nanostructures (nanowires and nanoribbons) on the surface of the β-Ga2O3 thin films. The presence of different dominant crystal planes in the samples was confirmed through X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) for verification purposes. In directly grown β-Ga2O3 films, the (−201) plane emerged as the primary crystallographic plane, while both the (−201) and (401) planes dominated in β-Ga2O3 films obtained via ε-Ga2O3 film annealing. Raman spectroscopy findings further supported these observations regarding the crystalline phase of the films as observed through XRD analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed distinct film morphologies resulting from variations in deposition temperatures. A flatter surface was observed when a higher proportion of ε-Ga2O3 was present in the film, however, regular cracking occurred after annealing. Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) images demonstrated that at a deposition temperature of 800 °C, regular steps were present on the film's surface. Mixed-phase films exhibited hillock morphology that disappeared after annealing, leading to a decrease in the surface roughness in root mean square (RMS) value. By elevating the growth temperature, a significantly enhanced density of gallium oxide nanoribbons can be seamlessly integrated onto the film surface. The transferred nanoribbons exhibit an ultra-thin profile with a minimum thickness of merely 12 nm, rendering them more slender and economically advantageous in comparison to conventional mechanical stripping methods. This study presents a CVD-based approach for growing gallium oxide thin films with varying morphologies by employing temperature modulation and demonstrates an innovative one-step method for growing nanostructures on gallium oxide films in situ, providing valuable insights for future device development involving gallium oxide.

Surface pretreatment of scheelite and cassiterite by gallic acid to achieve high efficiency flotation separation

Scheelite and cassiterite are common tungsten and tin oxide minerals that often coexist in nature. However, the similar oxidation degrees and solution and surface chemical properties of scheelite and cassiterite pose challenges to their flotation separation. Moreover, research in this area is currently limited. This study investigated the selective depression mechanism of gallic acid (GA) in the flotation separation of scheelite and cassiterite and successfully achieved the effective separation of the two minerals. Single mineral and artificially mixed mineral experiments were performed to analyze the flotation separation behavior of scheelite and cassiterite. The results revealed that in the absence of a depressant, scheelite and cassiterite exhibited recovery of 93.43 % and 89.72 %, respectively. After the addition of 5 × 10−4 mol/L GA to the mineral slurry, the grades of WO3 and Sn in the flotation concentrates were 48.93 % and 18.13 %, with recovery of 82.50 % and 31.62 %, respectively. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta potential, adsorption amount, contact angle, and atomic force microscopy imaging analyses were conducted to examine the selective depression mechanism of GA in the flotation separation of scheelite and cassiterite. In the slurry, the cassiterite surface provided active Sn sites for the chemical adsorption of GA. Moreover, the phenolate O- donor atoms of the deprotonated polar groups of GA will undergo coordination with metal ions and then adsorb on the mineral surface. GA forms metal gallate through adsorption of its –COOH and –OH groups on mineral surface and produces textured oxide layer rich in OH groups, thus reducing the surface hydrophobicity of cassiterite and then depressing cassiterite. The selective adsorption of GA on the cassiterite surface hindered the further adsorption of NaOL, thereby reducing its surface hydrophobicity. Therefore, GA finally realized the flotation separation of the two minerals.

Nonclassical solid-state organic crystallization via particle migration and disintegration

Crystallization processes of organic molecules remain inadequately understood compared to their inorganic counterparts. Recent discoveries challenging classical theories of crystallization underscore the complexity of organic crystallization mechanism. We herein report the growth of rod-shaped diethyl 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate (DDT) crystals at room temperature. Utilizing in-situ atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging, we observed multifaceted crystal growth which includes coalescence, ripening, and the long-range migration of micro-sized DDT particles. Additionally, we noted their simultaneous disintegration into nanoclusters before integrating into larger crystals. This study offers fresh insights into the non-classical crystallization processes of organic molecules.

Optimization, characterization and evaluation of sodium alginate nanoparticles for Ganoderic acid DM encapsulation: Inhibitory activity on tyrosinase activity and melanin formation

The efficacy of nanoencapsulation as a technology for enhancing the solubility of active substances has been demonstrated. In this particular investigation, Ganoderic acid DM (GA-DM) was encapsulated within sodium alginate nanoparticles (NPs) using the ionic crosslinking method. The confirmation of the successful loading of GA-DM was ascertained through the analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR). Empirical evidence derived from the examination of scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, transmission electron microscope (TEM) images, atomic force microscope (AFM) images, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) demonstrated a regular distribution and spherical morphology, with an average particle size of approximately 133 nm. The investigation yielded an encapsulation efficiency of 95.27 ± 0.11 % and a drug loading efficiency of 21.17 ± 0.02 % for the prepared sample. The release kinetics of SGPN was fitted with the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model corresponding to diffusion-controlled release. The incorporation of GA-DM into sodium alginate nanocarriers exhibited a mitigating effect on the cytotoxicity of HaCat and B16, while also demonstrating inhibitory properties against tyrosinase activity and melanin formation.

Rheological, thermal, and structural properties of heat-induced gluten gel: Effects of starch with varying degrees of debranching

This study evaluated the effects of starch with varying degree of debranching on the rheological, thermal, and structural properties of heat-induced gluten gel. As the duration of starch debranching treatment increased from 0 to 8 h, the viscoelasticity of the gel containing debranched starch (DBS) improved. Compared with the gluten gel (G), the gel strength of the G + DBS (8 h) sample increased by 65.2 %. The degradation temperature of gluten was minimally affected by DBS, while the weight loss rate increased by 4.4 %. Furthermore, the α-helical structure of gluten decreased, concomitant with an increase in β-sheet content. Notably, DBS treated for 8 h exhibited more hydrogen bonds with the tyrosine of gluten and triggered disulfide bridge conformation to transition from g-g-g to t-g-g, thereby reducing the stability of the molecular conformation of gluten proteins, as evidenced by the decreased height and width of the molecular chains observed in atomic force microscopy images. Overall, the composite gel structure induced by DBS exhibited a more continuous and homogeneous owing to the improved compatibility between DBS and gluten proteins, favoring the formation of a robust gel. These findings provide valuable insights for utilizing DBS to enhance gluten gel properties.

Insights into the writing process of the mask-free nanoprinting fluid force microscopy technology

Platelets are activated immediately when contacting with non-physiological surfaces. Minimization of surface-induced platelet activation is important not only for platelet storage but also for other blood-contacting devices and implants. Chemical surface modification tunes the response of cells to contacting surfaces, but it requires a long process involving many regulatory challenges to transfer into a marketable product. Biophysical modification overcomes these limitations by modifying only the surface topography of already approved materials. The available large and random structures on platelet storage bags do not cause a significant impact on platelets because of their smallest size (only 1–3 μm) compared to other cells. We have recently demonstrated the feasibility of the mask-free nanoprint fluid force microscope (FluidFM) technology for writing dot-grid and hexanol structures. Here, we demonstrated that the technique allows the fabrication of nanostructures of varying features including grid, circle, triangle, and Pacman-like structures. Characteristics of nanostructures including height, width, and cross-line were analyzed and compared using atomic force microscopy imaging. Based on the results, we identified several technical issues, such as the printing direction and shape of structures that directly altered nanofeatures during printing. Importantly, both geometry and interspace governed the degree of platelet adhesion, especially, the structures with triangular shapes and small interspaces prevent platelet adhesion better than others. We confirmed that FluidFM is a powerful technique to precisely fabricate a variety of desired nanostructures for the development of platelet/blood-contacting devices if technical issues during printing are well controlled.

Exploring the physicochemical traits, antifungal capabilities, and 3D spatial complexity of hydroxyapatite with Ag+[sbnd]Mg2+ substitution in the biocomposite thin films

The silver/magnesium doped hydroxyapatite (AgMgHAp, Ca10−x-yAgxMgy(PO4)6(OH)2, xAg=0.05 and yMg=0.02) nanocomposites coatings were deposited on Si substrate using the dip coating technique. The resulting coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The EDS analysis highlighted the presence of the constitutive elements of the silver/magnesium doped hydroxyapatite (AgMgHAp) nanocomposites coatings. The surface microtexture of the AgMgHAp was assessed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. The AFM data suggested the obtaining of a uniform deposited layer comprised of equally distributed nanoconglomerates. FT-IR studies highlighted the presence of vibrational modes associated with the phosphate and hydroxyl groups. No bands associated with silver or magnesium were observed. The XPS analysis highlighted the presence of the constituent elements of hydroxyapatite (Ca 2p, P 2 s, O 1 s), as well as dopants (Ag 3d, Mg 1 s and Mg 2p). The antifungal evaluation of AgMgHAp coatings was carried out using the Candida albicans ATCC 10231 fungal strain. The results of the antifungal assay revealed that the AgMgHAp coatings exhibited a strong inhibitory antifungal activity. Furthermore, the data highlighted that the AgMgHAp inhibited the development of biofilm on their surface. The results revealed that the antifungal activity of the coating varied based on the duration of incubation. On the other hand, the data also showed that AgMgHAp nanocomposites coatings inhibited the fungal cell adhesion and development from the early stages of the incubation. In addition to morphological analysis, we additionally take advantage of AFM images to investigate and explore the domain of fractal and multifractal analysis applied to the films under evaluation. Our studies indicates that nanocomposite coatings made from AgMgHAp demonstrate strong antifungal properties. Effect of enzymatic modification on the structure and rheological properties of diluted alkali-soluble pectin fraction rich in RG-I

This study focuses on pectin covalently linked in cell walls from two sources, apples and carrots, that was extracted using diluted alkali, and it describes changes in the rheological properties of diluted alkali-soluble pectin (DASP) due to enzymatic treatment. Given DASP’s richness of rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I), RG-I acetyl esterase (RGAE), rhamnogalacturonan endolyase (RGL), and arabinofuranosidase (ABF) were employed in various combinations for targeted degradation of RG-I pectin chains. Enzymatic degradations were followed by structural studies of pectin molecules using atomic force microscopy (AFM) as well as measurements of rheological and spectral properties. AFM imaging revealed a significant increase in the length of branched molecules after incubation with ABF, suggesting that arabinose side chains limit RG-I aggregation. Structural modifications were confirmed by changes in the intensity of bands in the pectin fingerprint and anomeric region on Fourier transform infrared spectra. ABF treatment led to a decrease in the stability of pectic gels, while the simultaneous use of ABF, RGAE, and RGL enzymes did not increase the degree of aggregation compared to the control sample. These findings suggest that the association of pectin chains within the DASP fraction may rely significantly on intermolecular interactions. Two mechanisms are proposed, which involve side chains as short-range attachment points or an extended linear homogalacturonan conformation favoring inter-chain interactions over self-association.
