On Epistemology in Researching the Teaching and Learning of Literacy, Literature, and the Language Arts

Yonas Mesfun Asfaha is an associate professor at Asmara College of Education in Eritrea, and recently he accepted the role of acting dean of the College of Education. He is a well-known literacy scholar specializing in African literacies as well as multilingual language policy as it relates to education. Lydiah Kiramba is an associate professor at the University of Nebraska and is originally from Kenya. Her areas of expertise include multilingual and ESL education, language and literacy teaching and assessment, and bi/multiliteracy development. Lydiah Kiramba talked with Yonas Asfaha via Zoom during the spring/summer months of 2023 about epistemologies and ontologies that have significantly influenced his work.

A térinformatika rendőrségi alkalmazásának lehetőségei = Applications of Geographical Information Systems in Policing [Recenzió Pődör, A., & Mátyás, Sz. Rendészeti térinformatika című könyvéről

In 2022, the authors Andrea Pődör and Szabolcs Mátyás released their textbook titled Rendészeti térinformatika [Law Enforcement Application of GIS] under the auspices of Ludovika University Press. Andrea Pődör is an associate professor and the director of the Geoinformatics Institute at the Alba Regia Faculty of Technology, University of Óbuda. Szabolcs Mátyás is an associate professor at the National Public Service University and a lecturer at the Department of Investigative Theory. The book was professionally proofread by László Zsigovits. The authors have been involved in policing science for decades, focusing especially on crime mapping. This publication provides a comprehensive overview of the most important knowledge in this field from a practical perspective. Prior to this, no publication of this size had been released in the field of law enforcement dealing with GIS.

With great and successful prestigious history of ICETAC, 2023 4th International Conference on Electrical Technology and Automatic Control (ICETAC 2023) was held in Chongqing, China during 24th–26th, November 2023 via virtual form. It was sponsored by School of Electrical Engineering, Chongqing University and organized by National Key Laboratory of Power Transmission and Transformation Equipment Technology.ICETAC 2023 is a great academic platform and is of great significance for disseminating cutting-edge information in disciplines and industry, promoting the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and condensing academic achievements in the industry at this event.The Conference consisted of three plenary keynote speeches (addressed by Associate Professor Vandana Sharma from CHRIST University, India, Professor Xiaofang Yuan from Hunan University, China, and Associate Professor Qiushi Cui from Chongqing University, China, respectively), several oral and poster presentations, in which a wide range of topics were covered and the most recent significant results were presented. They discussed such topics as Unlocking the Potentials of AI in the domain of Automatic Control, Collaborative Operation Optimization of Processing Equipment and AGVs for Green Discrete Manufacturing, New Power System Modeling, Simulation and Testing Technology, etc. Besides, the attending scholars and experts exchanged deeply on the latest research achievements and advanced experience in the industry development and shared their unique insights into development trends and research directions of the industry.Some selected works presented at the Conference are published in this conference proceedings edition of Journal of Physics: Conference Series., which shows readers the latest research results and application cases of electrical and automatic control technology. Cell scientist to watch – Jakub Sedzinski

ABSTRACT Jakub Sedzinski is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine (reNEW), Denmark. After his undergraduate and Master's degrees in biotechnology at the University of Wroclaw, Poland, he completed his PhD in Prof. Ewa Paluch's lab at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany, where he studied biophysical aspects of fundamental cell behaviours. Next, he moved to the University of Texas at Austin in the USA for a postdoctoral fellowship with Prof. John Wallingford. There, he became interested in how cell-level mechanics influence the complex development and maintenance of tissues like the mucociliary epithelium. In 2017, he started his own lab in Copenhagen where he continues to integrate biophysics with cell biology and developmental models in order to elucidate the relationships between cell and tissue mechanics and cell fate acquisition in epithelial tissue dynamics. We spoke with Jakub over Zoom about his career and how his cross-disciplinary approach to research is driven by his fundamental passion for learning new things.

Determinants of Operations Management Faculty Salary: Is Publishing in “A” Journals the “Bottom Line”?

This study investigates the determinants of salary for operations management scholars. Is it as some opine that the only thing that matters is the publication count in “A” journals? How do the full range of activities: research, teaching, service, and administration, affect salary? The present research seeks to shed light on these questions and is predicated on a data set that consists of the research, teaching, and service outcomes, along with salary, for a full census of operations management faculty at 22 public universities (227 faculty) for base, 9-month salary and a subset of 15 universities (150 faculty) for total annual compensation. The results demonstrate partial support for the hypotheses that only “A” publications are financially rewarded, with publications in Production and Operations Management having the highest correlation with salary. The salary reward for publishing in “A” journals is unaffected by number of coauthors. Publications in other academic journals, top-tier practitioner journals, and top journals in sister-fields, and measures of impact, such as citations, H-index, and research awards provide no additional explanatory value of salary. Likewise, service and teaching awards do not add explanatory value. Female Full Professors are paid roughly $23,000 less in base salary than their male counterparts. Non-publishing factors that significantly contribute to salary include changing university affiliations (only for Associate and Full Professors), taking on administrative duties, as well as certain qualitative measures such as achieving Fellow status at the Production and Operations Management Society.

Asymmetric cell divisions can produce daughter cells of different sizes, but it is unclear whether unequal cell cleavage is important for cell fate decisions. A new paper in Development explores the role of unequal cleavages in Caenorhabditis elegans embryos. To learn more about the story behind the paper, we caught up with first author Thomas Mullan and corresponding author Richard Poole, Associate Professor of Developmental Biology at University College London, UK.

Peng Du is Associate Professor at Peking University College of Life Sciences, where he started his own lab in 2018. Peng's research focusses on post-transcriptional RNA regulatory pathways in early mammalian embryonic development and disease. We spoke to Peng over Zoom to find out more about his career path, his transition from plant to mammalian research and his experience becoming a group leader.

The Level of Interest in the Fields of Philosophy of Science and History of Science among Academicians at Four Universities in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey

Aim: Determination of the level of interest in the fields of history of science and philosophy of science among academicians will contribute to the identification of the steps to be taken towards a solution to identify the problems that prevent producing knowledge and contributing to science and creating a more suitable scientific environment. The aim of this research is to reveal the level of interest in the fields of philosophy of science and history of science among academicians.
 Methods: In this research, conducted with the voluntary participation of 682 academicians from four different universities in the Central Anatolia Region, data were collected through face-to-face interviews between December 2019 and March 2020. 
 Findings: It was found that 52.3% of the academics were interested in the field of philosophy of science, while 10.1% were very interested in it. While the rate of academics who were interested in the history of science was 63.5%, the rate of those who were very interested in it was 10.7%. Katarina Leão: Links between the auditory and limbic systems, with a focus on the effects of unconventional novel treatment options, such as psychedelics and cannabis extract

Katarina E. Leão, PhD, is an associate professor at the Brain Institute at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, Brazil. She is vice-coordinator of the postgraduate program in neuroscience (2013–2017 and 2023 – current) and spent 2020 as a visiting professor at the Karolinska Institute/Uppsala University, Sweden. She is head of the Hearing and Neuronal activity lab researching neuronal mechanisms of noise-induced tinnitus and tinnitus-related anxiety. Dr. Leão recently joined the ongoing interview series by Genomic Press, discussing her professional endeavors and personal experiences.

Ruth M. Barrientos: Vulnerabilities associated with the aging brain that make it more susceptible to inflammatory challenges leading to memory dysfunction

Dr. Ruth Barrientos is an associate professor (with tenure) in the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health in the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University. She currently serves as associate editor of Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, the flagship journal for the Psychoneuroimmunology Research Society. Her research aims to uncover the vulnerabilities associated with the aging brain that make it more susceptible to inflammatory challenges resulting in memory dysfunction, ranging from mild cognitive impairments to Alzheimer's Disease; and to discover interventions to improve these vulnerabilities and prevent memory degradation. We conducted an interview with Dr. Barrientos, asking questions about her life and scientific career and finished up with selected questions from the Proust Questionnaire.

Associate Professor of the Department of Civil Procedure and Entrepreneurial Law of the Samara National Research University, PhD (Law)

This article is devoted to certain aspects of the protection of inheritance rights in courts of general jurisdiction. Currently, the judiciary is considering a large number of inheritance disputes through claims and special proceedings. Their distinction is primarily based on the presence or absence of a legal dispute. An analysis of judicial practice shows that the vast majority of inheritance cases are considered within the framework of claim proceedings, and within the framework of special proceedings, cases of establishing facts of legal significance, cases of notarial acts performed or refusal to perform them, and others are considered. However, in the author’s opinion, cases of challenging notarial acts or refusing to perform them are more likely to be cases of claim proceedings due to the presence of a dispute about the law, two warring parties, etc., and therefore it seems advisable to consider these cases within the framework claim proceedings and their possible exclusion from the categories of cases of special proceedings.

INDIAN HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM: ASCENDANCY OF HEGEMONIC CULTURE AND INTERNATIONAL MULTICULTURALISM

Through this study researcher wants to find relationship between two dependent variables, i.e., hegemonic culture and international multiculturalism with that of independent variable, i.e. Indian higher education system. Since it becomes very important to know what effect multiculturalism and hegemonic culture have on our higher education system so that we can have more culturally responsive classroom practices in place. For this research, data was collected from university level teachers working at various positions like Professors, Associate professors, and Assistant professors. Full-time college faculty members made up the bulk of the data collecting samples. The information was gathered using a survey. 
 All dependent variables i.e., hegemonic culture (0.010), international multiculturalism (0.02) have significant positive impact on the independent variable i.e., Indian Higher Education system, it was also observed that hegemonic culture (0.010) have the least impact on Indian higher education system. 
 We see CRT in educational environments as all about leveraging diverse ethnic groups’ culture and experiences to educate more effectively. A culturally responsive classroom must allow children to keep maintaining both their academic success and their cultural identity. This research contributes towards a theoretical framework which is based on CFA Modelling of construct variables. In this we try to find out relationship between dependent variables like hegemonic culture, what is the role of an experienced teacher in facilitating culturally diverse classrooms and international multiculturalism on independent variable i.e., Indian higher education system.

Purple non-sulfur bacteria and the circular economy Arpita Bose, Associate Professor at Washington University in St. Louis, discusses the potential of microbial solutions in supporting sustainable and environmentally responsible alternatives to the traditional linear economy. Earth’s climate is undergoing unprecedented changes due to human activities, primarily the emission of greenhouse gases. Widespread petroleum-based production of fuels and plastics releases large amounts of pollution, contributing to rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and ecosystem disruptions. Finding feasible solutions to the climate crisis is crucial to preserve essential resources and protect human and environmental health. Harnessing and strengthening the natural capabilities of microorganisms and microbial communities with synthetic biology will be the key to reducing and upcycling waste for a greener global economy.

Addressing ageism in healthcare through gerontological nursing

Addressing ageism in healthcare through gerontological nursing Sherry Dahlke, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, discusses the impact of ageism in healthcare and why gerontological nursing education is vital for improving awareness and patient care. The World Health Organization’s (WHO, 2021) global report on ageism reports that one in every two people is ageist towards older people. Ageism includes stereotypes about aging and older adults (beliefs), prejudice (feelings) and/or discrimination through actions (WHO, 2021). Ageism can occur between people, be institutionalized, and/or self-directed. For example, ageism occurs in healthcare when older people who often have complex health and social needs are expected to fit into systems designed for younger people with one health concern (Kojima, 2018), resulting in adverse health outcomes (Chang et al., 2020). Exposure to negative stereotypes of aging can lead people to internalize negative beliefs of inevitable decline, resulting in them experiencing adverse effects of ageism as they age (Levy, 2009; Steward, 2022).

Flexible thickness control of hydroforming by forced lubrication method in arbitrary region and time

The elastic and plastic properties of metal can be used in various applications. Junior Associate Professor Hiroaki Kubota is working to improve manufacturing design through the application of elasto-plastic mechanics. He is particularly interested in hydroforming; a process in which steel tubes are inflated by water pressure. This can be used to produce hollow, lightweight automobile parts. Kubota previously worked in the body design and advanced development department of a car manufacturing company, learning of the importance of thickness distribution of vehicle components. It was this that inspired his current work. At the Department of Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering, Tokai University, Japan, where Kubota is based, he is conducting research on hydroforming technology and applied research on the optimisation of plastic working using finite element analysis (FEM) and artificial intelligence (AI). Through their research on lubrication hydroforming, the team developed a forced lubrication technology that supplies high-pressure lubricant between a die and a tube during tube hydroforming, leading to even distribution and uniform wall thickness. The researchers want to expand the application of high-strength steel tubes to contribute to more lightweight and rigid cars. In their work the team confirmed that when a high-pressure lubricant was injected between the die and the steel tube, uniform wall thickness was achieved and cracking prevented. This was the very first time that forced lubrication was found to be effective in hydroforming. The team also discovered that by managing the forced lubrication, the thickness of parts can be freely controlled.

Systematising clustering techniques through cross-disciplinary research, leading to the development of new methods

Clustering algorithms can help scientists gain valuable insights from data. Thereâ–™s a variety of clustering methods in use, which means there are gaps between the methods used in different fields. Associate Professor Kohei Inoue, Department of Media Design, Kyushu University, Japan, wants to bridge these gaps by investigating the relationships among various clustering methods developed in different fields, in order to systematise the world of clustering. He is bringing two decades of research activities in pattern recognition and image processing to this work. In order to clarify the relationships between different clustering methods, Inoue and the team are conducting an interdisciplinary survey. First, the researchers are working to clarify the relationship between the technologies used across different fields. So far, they have successfully clarified the relationship between the rolling guidance filter and the local mode filter. In a previous study, Inoue and his collaborators proposed a robust K-means clustering al-algorithm. The researchers demonstrated the effectiveness of their technique utilising a BBC dataset originating from BBC News. In their work, the team is collaborating with a laboratory at a university in Japan that is studying non-photorealistic rendering. They have so far published several co-authored papers, as well as having obtained results from their joint research. Ultimately, by systemising clustering technology, Inoue believes that the characteristics of each method, as well as the interrelationships between each method, can be explained and clustering technology enhanced, as well as new clustering techniques developed.

Research on optical computing system architecture for simple recurrent neural networks

Moore’s Law, relating to the speed and capabilities of computers is becoming less applicable. In this ‘post-Moore’ era, a cross-disciplinary team based in the Constructive Electronics Laboratory, Kyushu University, Japan, is investigating optical computing system infrastructures, with a view to driving computing technology forward in a way that negates the need to comply with Moore’s Law. Associate Professor Satoshi Kawakami is an expert in electric circuits and computer architecture who is part of the team. The team’s expertise covers materials, devices, circuits, architectures and algorithms and is geared towards pioneering new computing technologies in the post-Moore era. Kawakami believes that the continuous improvement of computer systems with higher performance and lower power consumption/energy consumption will be essential to realise a sustainable advanced information society and wants to maximise the advantages of devices and hide their disadvantages at the system level, which will necessitate collaboration with higher system layers. Another important goal is reducing power consumption by improving the efficiency of computers. In one current project, the researchers are exploring optical computing system infrastructure for simple recurrent neural networks. The team is keen to re-examine the ideal state of optical circuits from the perspective of the entire system, including electrical memory and interfaces.

Research on the formation of weathering substances as reserve materials for collapse and climatic conditions

Heavy rainfall or natural disasters such as earthquakes can lead to slope failure, which is when a slope weakens and rapidly collapses without warning. The speed of slope failure means there is little chance for people to escape and so there can be significant numbers of injuries and deaths. Warnings of slope failures from authorities tend to be inaccurate due to myriad factors, including the different properties of soils, as well as factors such as temperature and annual rainfall. Researchers at Saitama University and the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience in Japan, including Associate Professor Chiaki Oguchi and Principal Researcher of the project, Tsuyoshi Wakatsuki, are working to address knowledge gaps about sediment-related disasters, particularly slope failure. A key focus for the researchers is on estimating formation rates of slope materials that are waiting to collapse. The team is working to reduce unpredictability and improve the accuracy of disaster prevention measures. Currently, the researchers are investigating the formation of weathering substances as reserve materials for collapse and climatic conditions and, so far, they have ascertained that in areas with annual high temperatures, the slow failure materials tend to be those that are composed of a thick slope which contains a greater amount of fine soil particles. They have also confirmed that these materials show a higher potential for greater weathering, thereby exacerbating the issue and exponentially increasing the possibility of slope failure.

Next-generation healthcare infrastructure based on cross-layer optimization of biosignal sensing and communication

The human body already uses electric signals to transmit information to and from the brain and the rest of the body but is there potential to harness the complex interactions between living organisms and electromagnetic waves to advance scientific disciplines? Associate Professor Dairoku Muramatsu is the head of the Muramatsu Laboratory. He leads the Bioelectromagnetics Research Group, Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering Mechanical and Intelligent Systems, University of Electro-Communications, Japan. He is a specialist in bioelectromagnetic engineering that spans engineering and medicine interested in the interactions between living organisms and electromagnetic waves and how improved understanding of these interactions could lead to practical, real-world impacts. A key principle behind Muramatsu's research is that by passing a weak electric current through the human body and using the body itself as a path for electric signals, it is possible to exchange information between people and objects that come into contact with them. He is working to create innovative and highly usable technology by making full use of simulation and manufacturing. As research on human body communication, which is wireless communication that uses the human body itself as a transmission path for high-frequency signals, findings will play a key role in the spread of wearable devices. Muramatsu has already proposed bioelectromagnetic models that serve as a tool for a wide range of bioelectronics and sensor designs, including non-invasive blood glucose monitoring using bioelectromagnetic response as an evaluation criterion.
