The effects of language switching experience and acute stress on bilingual advantages in cognitive flexibility

Aims: This study aimed to investigate how bilingual advantages in cognitive flexibility were modulated by language-use parameters (e.g., language switching experience) and psychological factors (e.g., acute stress). Design/methodology: Chinese-English unbalanced bilinguals with a high or low amount of language switching experience (HLS or LLS bilinguals) performed a cued color-shape switching task in stress-free condition (Experiment 1) or in acute stress condition induced by the Trier Social Stress Test (Experiment 2). Switching and mixing costs were calculated to denote two aspects of cognitive flexibility: transient and sustained switching abilities, respectively. Data and analysis: Differences in switching and mixing costs between HLS and LLS bilinguals were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). The predictive relationship between language switching experience and cognitive flexibility was examined using hierarchical regression models. The role of acute stress in the dynamics was tested by means of independent samples t-tests in a cross-analysis of Experiments 1 and 2. Findings/conclusions: HLS and LLS bilinguals showed similar switching and mixing costs in the stress-free condition, but in the acute stress condition, HLS bilinguals showed lower switching costs than LLS bilinguals. The result of cross-experimental analysis further revealed that higher switching costs were demanded in LLS bilinguals under acute stress. These findings suggest that language switching experience specifically influences transient switching ability under acute stress. Originality: This study was a first attempt to provide evidence that psychological stress may be a crucial determinant in exploring the theoretical implications of cognitive control in bilingualism. Significance: Our findings suggest that bilingual advantages in cognitive flexibility are conditional, shedding light on the ongoing debate about the ambiguous relationship between language experience and cognitive control in bilinguals.

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid and Glutamate Concentrations in the Striatum and Anterior Cingulate Cortex Not Found to Be Associated with Cognitive Flexibility.

Behavioral flexibility and goal-directed behavior heavily depend on fronto-striatal networks. Within these circuits, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate play an important role in (motor) response inhibition, but it has remained largely unclear whether they are also relevant for cognitive inhibition. We hence investigated the functional role of these transmitters for cognitive inhibition during cognitive flexibility. Healthy young adults performed two paradigms assessing different aspects of cognitive flexibility. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was used to quantify GABA+ and total glutamate/glutamine (Glx) levels in the striatum and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) referenced to N-acetylaspartate (NAA). We observed typical task switching and backward inhibition effects, but striatal and ACC concentrations of GABA+/NAA and Glx/NAA were not associated with cognitive flexibility in a functionally relevant manner. The assumption of null effects was underpinned by Bayesian testing. These findings suggest that behavioral and cognitive inhibition are functionally distinct faculties, that depend on (at least partly) different brain structures and neurotransmitter systems. While previous studies consistently demonstrated that motor response inhibition is modulated by ACC and striatal GABA levels, our results suggest that the functionally distinct cognitive inhibition required for successful switching is not, or at least to a much lesser degree, modulated by these factors.

Sex differences in cognitive flexibility are driven by the estrous cycle and stress-dependent.

Stress is associated with psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and panic disorders. Women are more likely to be diagnosed with these stress-related psychiatric disorders than men. A key phenotype in stress-related psychiatric disorders is impairment in cognitive flexibility, which is the ability to develop new strategies to respond to different patterns in the environment. Because gonadal hormones can contribute to sex differences in response to stress, it is important to consider where females are in their cycle when exposed to stress and cognitive flexibility testing. Moreover, identifying neural correlates involved in cognitive flexibility could not only build our understanding of the biological mechanisms behind this crucial skill but also leads to more targeted treatments for psychiatric disorders. Although previous studies have separately examined sex differences in cognitive flexibility, stress effects on cognitive flexibility, and the effect of gonadal hormones on cognitive flexibility, many of the findings were inconsistent, and the role of the estrous cycle in stress-induced impacts on cognitive flexibility is still unknown. This study explored potential sex differences in cognitive flexibility using an operant strategy shifting-paradigm after either control conditions or restraint stress in freely cycling female and male rats (with estrous cycle tracking in the female rats). In addition, we examined potential neural correlates for any sex differences observed. In short, we found that stress impaired certain aspects of cognitive flexibility and that there were sex differences in cognitive flexibility that were driven by the estrous cycle. Specifically, stress increased latency to first press and trials to criterion in particular tasks. The female rats demonstrated more omissions and perseverative errors than the male rats; the sex differences were mostly driven by proestrus female rats. Interestingly, the number of orexinergic neurons was higher in proestrus female rats than in the male rats under control conditions. Moreover, orexin neural count was positively correlated with number of perseverative errors made in cognitive flexibility testing. In sum, there are sex differences in cognitive flexibility that are driven by the estrous cycle and are stress-dependent, and orexin neurons may underlie some of the sex differences observed.

Understanding self-report and neurocognitive assessments of cognitive flexibility in people with and without lifetime anorexia nervosa

ABSTRACT Objective: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious eating disorder associated with several cognitive difficulties including poor cognitive flexibility (i.e. difficulties in effectively adapting to changes in the environment and/or changing task demands). AN research has primarily assessed cognitive flexibility using neurocognitive tests, and little is known about the differences or similarities between self-report and neurocognitive assessments of cognitive flexibility. This study investigated the relationship between self-report and neurocognitive assessments of cognitive flexibility in people with no history of an eating disorder (n = 207) and people with a self-reported lifetime diagnosis of AN (n = 19). Methods: Participants completed self-report and neurocognitive assessments of cognitive flexibility through an online study. Results: No significant correlations were found between self-report and neurocognitive assessments of cognitive flexibility for either group of the sample, suggesting that these assessments may evaluate different aspects of cognitive flexibility. Further, negative mood and self-reported eating disorder symptoms were found to significantly relate to self-reported cognitive flexibility, but were not associated with performance on neurocognitive tests of cognitive flexibility. Conclusions: To provide a comprehensive understanding of perceived and objective cognitive flexibility in AN, future research and clinical assessments should include both self-report and neurocognitive assessments.

Cognitive Inflexibility in OCD and Related Disorders.

Cognitive inflexibility is suggested by the hallmark symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), namely the occurrence of repetitive thoughts and/or behaviours that persist despite being functionally impairing and egodystonic to the individual. As well as being implied by the top-level symptoms, cognitive inflexibility in OCD, and some related conditions, has also been objectively quantified in case-control studies using computerised cognitive tasks. This chapter begins by considering the objective measurement of different aspects of cognitive flexibility using neuropsychological paradigms, with a focus on neural and neurochemical substrates. It moves on to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of findings from a widely deployed flexibility task: the Intra-Dimensional/Extra-Dimensional Set-Shift Task (IDED). By pooling data from 11 studies (335 OCD patients and 311 controls), we show that Extra-Dimensional (ED) shift deficits are a robust and reproducible finding (effect size medium-large) in OCD across the literature, and that this deficit is not attributable to group differences in age or IQ. The OCD ED deficit is then discussed in terms of dysfunction of fronto-striatal pathways (as exemplified, for example, by functional connectivity data), and the putative role of different neurotransmitters. We consider evidence that impaired ED shifting constitutes a candidate vulnerability marker (or 'endophenotype') for OCD. Theavailable literature is then surveyed as to ED findings in other obsessive-compulsive (OC) related disorders (e.g. hoarding, body-dysmorphic disorder, and trichotillomania), as well as in non-OC disorders (schizophrenia and anxiety symptoms in general). Lastly, we consider more recent, emerging developments in the quantification of compulsivity using cognitive tasks and questionnaires, as well as key directions for future research, including the need to refine compulsivity and its composite cognitive processes.

The level of a person’s activity in the labour market mainly depends on the development of cognitive flexibility – mental ability characterizing the skill of an individual to transform cognitive attitudes adapting to new requirements of the present. The paper presents the results of measuring the cognitive flexibility of labour market members (on a sample of 380 professionally active residents of Novosibirsk). The authors measured cognitive flexibility using the Dennis & Vander Wal Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI) questionnaire adapted for the Kurginyan & Osavolyuk Russian-speaking sample. The respondents were interviewed using the Google Forms anonymous survey tool. The paper aims at the study of special aspects of cognitive flexibility of Novosibirsk labour market participants. The authors studied the relations between the personal data of labour market participants (gender, age, education, marital status, financial situation, degree of activity in professional self-development) and cognitive flexibility (integral indicator and Alternatives and Control scales. The study identified that the respondents of the senior generation had a higher degree of activity in professional self-development and family people had the lower one. The Cognitive Flexibility integral indicator is most positively associated with the level of material well-being of the respondents, their involvement in the professional self-development. The authors mention gender dependence of the respondents’ cognitive flexibility indicators: the integral cognitive flexibility indicator and the Alternative scale indicator are higher in women, and the Control scale indicator is higher in men.

Executive functions and drawing in young children with cerebral palsy: Comparisons with typical development

ABSTRACT There is evidence that school-aged children with cerebral palsy (CP) may present deficits in executive functions (EF) greater than would be expected considering their intellectual ability. However, no studies have focused on characterizing EF in this group at an earlier critical period – the preschool years. Furthermore, and given evidence from typically-developing (TD) children, deficits in EF are associated with potential detrimental effects on social and educational development – which can include drawing. Our aim was to compare preschool children with CP, matched in chronological age and intellectual ability with a group of TD children, regarding their executive functioning and drawing abilities. In addition, we examined the relationships between these variables in each of the groups. Twenty-eight children were evaluated in executive functions and drawing tasks. Differences were found in some aspects of cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control, but not in working memory. Additionally, the quality of the drawings was significantly poorer in the CP group. In the TD group, there was an association between greater inhibitory control (but not cognitive flexibility or working memory) and drawing quality. In the CP group, although non-significant, medium-sized correlations were observed between drawing and several aspects of executive functioning. Overall, our results suggest more similarities than differences in the executive functioning of children with CP (and preserved cognitive ability) and TD children. However, there were still important between-group differences in their drawing abilities. There was also a distinct pattern of associations between drawing and executive functions in the clinical group.

Cognitive Training through mHealth for Individuals with Substance Use Disorder.

Heroin addiction has a negative impact on cognitive functions, and even recovering addicts suffer from cognitive impairment. Recent approaches to cognitive intervention have been taking advantage of what new technologies have to offer. We report a study testing the efficacy of a serious games approach using tablets to stimulate and rehabilitate cognitive functions in recovering addicts. A small-scale cognitive training program with serious games was run with a sample of 14 male heroin addicts undergoing a rehabilitation program. We found consistent improvements in cognitive functioning between baseline and follow-up assessments for frontal lobe functions, verbal memory and sustained attention, as well as in some aspects of cognitive flexibility, decision-making and in depression levels. More than two thirds of patients in cognitive training had positive outcomes related to indicators of verbal memory cognitive flexibility, which contrasts to patients not in training, in which only one patient improved between baseline and follow-up. The results are promising but still require randomized control trials to determine the efficiency of this approach to cognitive rehabilitation programs for the cognitive recovery of heroin addicts.

Skin picking disorder with co-occurring body dysmorphic disorder

There is clinical overlap between skin picking disorder (SPD) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), but little research has examined clinical and cognitive correlates of the two disorders when they co-occur. Of 55 participants with SPD recruited for a neurocognitive study and two pharmacological studies, 16 (29.1%) had co-occurring BDD. SPD participants with and without BDD were compared to each other and to 40 healthy volunteers on measures of symptom severity, social functioning, and cognitive assessments using the Stop-signal task (assessing response impulsivity) and the Intra-dimensional/Extra-dimensional Set Shift task (assessing cognitive flexibility). Individuals with SPD and BDD exhibited significantly worse picking, significantly worse overall psychosocial functioning, and significantly greater dysfunction on aspects of cognitive flexibility. These results indicate that when SPD co-occurs with BDD unique clinical and cognitive aspects of SPD may be more pronounced. Future work should explore possible subgroups in SPD and whether these predict different treatment outcomes.

Reliability and validity of two self-report measures of cognitive flexibility.

Neuropsychological testing currently represents the gold standard in assessing cognitive flexibility. However, this format presents some challenges in terms of time and skills required for administration, scoring, and interpretation. Two self-report measures of cognitive flexibility have been developed to measure aspects of cognitive flexibility in everyday settings, although neither has been validated in an older sample. In this study, we investigated the psychometric properties of 2 self-report measures of cognitive flexibility, the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI; Dennis & Vander Wal, 2010) and the Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFS; Martin & Rubin, 1995), against neuropsychological measures of cognitive flexibility in a clinical sample of 47 older adults with comorbid anxiety and depression and a nonclinical sample of 53 community-dwelling older adults. Internal consistency was good for the CFS and CFI in all samples. The clinical sample reported poorer cognitive flexibility than did the nonclinical sample on self-report measures and performed more poorly on some neuropsychological measures. There was evidence of convergent validity between the 2 self-report measures but little relationship between the self-report and neuropsychological measures of cognitive flexibility, suggesting that self-report measures assess a different aspect of cognitive flexibility than does neuropsychological testing. Divergent validity was weak from measures of anxiety and depression in the combined and nonclinical samples but acceptable in the clinical sample. Results suggest that these measures are suitable for use with an older adult sample but do not assess the same aspects of cognitive flexibility as are assessed by neuropsychological assessment.

Motor inhibition and cognitive flexibility in pathologic skin picking

Individuals with pathologic skin picking (PSP) often report significant difficulty resisting the urges and drive to engage in picking behavior. Studies have shown significant inhibitory deficiencies (i.e. increased impulsivity) in subjects with other putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, such as trichotillomania, using objective tests. This study sought to assess motor inhibitory control and aspects of cognitive flexibility in a sample of individuals with PSP. Twenty subjects with PSP (mean age 33.1+/-14.3 years; 85% female) and 20 healthy controls (mean age 31.6+/-9.1 years; 85% female) underwent cognitive assessments using the Stop-signal and Intra-dimensional/Extra-dimensional (ID/ED) set-shift tasks. Groups were matched for age, gender, and education. PSP was associated with significantly impaired stop-signal reaction times but intact ID/ED cognitive flexibility compared to controls. Measures of disease severity in the PSP subjects did not covary significantly with stop-signal performance. The finding of impaired inhibitory control but intact set-shift cognitive flexibility draws remarkable parallels with findings in trichotillomania but differs from obsessive compulsive disorder. These findings have important implications for understanding potential neurobiological dysfunction in PSP, how the disorder should be classified, and suggest new potential treatment directions.

The Cognitive Flexibility Inventory: Instrument Development and Estimates of Reliability and Validity

The cognitive flexibility inventory (CFI) was developed to be a brief self-report measure of the type of cognitive flexibility necessary for individuals to successfully challenge and replace maladaptive thoughts with more balanced and adaptive thinking. It was designed to measure three aspects of cognitive flexibility: (a) the tendency to perceive difficult situations as controllable; (b) the ability to perceive multiple alternative explanations for life occurrences and human behavior; and (c) the ability to generate multiple alternative solutions to difficult situations. The two studies presented in this manuscript describe the initial development of the CFI and a 7-week longitudinal study. Results from these studies indicate the CFI has a reliable two-factor structure, excellent internal consistency, and high 7-week test–retest reliability. Preliminary evidence was obtained for the CFI’s convergent construct validity via the CFI’s correlations with other measures of cognitive flexibility (Cognitive Flexibility Scale) and coping (Ways of Coping Checklist-Revised), respectively. Support was also demonstrated for the concurrent construct validity of the CFI via its correlation with the BDI-II. Further research is needed to investigate the reliability and validity of the CFI among clinical populations.

The Effect of Propranolol on Cognitive Flexibility and Memory in Acute Cocaine Withdrawal

Upregulated noradrenergic activity occurs early in cocaine withdrawal. Our previous work revealed impaired cognitive flexibility in acute cocaine withdrawal, a cognitive domain that appears to be modulated by noradrenergic activity. Therefore, we wished to determine the effect of beta-adrenergic antagonists on cognitive performance in acute cocaine withdrawal. Eleven subjects acutely withdrawing from cocaine were tested in this pilot study on tasks of cognitive flexibility as well as word fluency, attention, verbal memory, and spatial memory, off and on propranolol in a double-blinded manner. Propranolol significantly benefited certain aspects of cognitive flexibility in acute cocaine withdrawal, and improved some measures of verbal fluency and verbal recall. Cocaine withdrawal treatment is characterized by high failure rates. Further research is needed to determine the role this finding of a reversible cognitive impairment in cocaine withdrawal has in treatment.

Lesions to the nucleus basalis magnocellularis lower performance but do not block the retention of a previously acquired learning set

Rats were first trained to acquire an olfactory discrimination learning set (ODLS) on 40 olfactory-unique discrimination problems. Following acquisition of ODLS, animals were lesioned bilaterally in the nucleus basalis magnocellularis (nBM) using either quisqualic acid (QUIS) or 192 IgG-saporin (SAP). QUIS animals performed significantly worse than control animals following surgery and SAP animals performed transiently worse than control animals. Despite lowered performances, both QUIS and SAP animals performed significantly better than expected by chance on trial 2 indicating retention of the ODLS previously acquired. Implications for the role of the nBM in aspects of cognitive flexibility and its role in acquisition versus retention are discussed.
