This study investigated the effects of Aromatherapy Massage on chronic pain and quality of life (QOL) in four patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) whose pain was unresponsive to medication. A three-arm crossover trial was conducted, consisting of Inhalation (I), Massage (M), and Aromatherapy Massage (AM), each over three weeks. Pain was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and King's PD Pain Scale (KPPS). Plasma dopamine and β-endorphin levels and electroencephalography (EEG) were used as objective indicators. QOL was measured using the PDQ-39. Data were analyzed with linear mixed models (p < 0.05). Only AM significantly increased plasma dopamine. Both M and AM elevated β-endorphin levels and reduced VAS scores during and after intervention. KPPS scores improved following AM. EEG showed the highest peak alpha frequency during AM. PDQ-39 scores improved by 3.75 points after AM. Aromatherapy massage may offer effective multisensory stimulation for alleviating chronic pain and enhancing QOL in PD patients. It may serve as a useful complementary strategy in pain management.

Environmental issues are important topics that deserve attention, including household waste problems such as used cooking oil. Used cooking oil that is disposed of carelessly has the potential to pollute the environment and cause negative impacts in the future. Utilizing used cooking oil waste can be an alternative way to reduce ongoing environmental pollution. One product with development potential is aromatherapy candles. Aromatherapy candles can be used as a medium for relaxation with natural aromas. However, most aromatherapy candles on the market still use artificial fragrances that are not entirely safe for health. The purpose of this study was to develop aromatherapy candles made from used cooking oil with the addition of pandan leaf extract as a natural fragrance. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, with data collection through 4 stages, namely Input, Process, Output, and Evaluation. The results of the analysis showed that aromatherapy candles with pandan leaf extract produced a soft aroma and provided a natural relaxing effect. This innovation not only utilizes waste productively, but also provides multiple benefits for health, the environment, and the economy.

As women approach perimenopause, aging of the ovaries causes a decrease in estrogen production. The inability to maintain adequate estrogen levels, whether due to low production or other factors, can cause a variety of physical and psychological changes, including irregular periods, hot flashes, and insomnia. The purpose of this study was to find the effectiveness of Surya Namaskar Yoga and Chamomile Essential Oil Aromatherapy on Hot Flashes and Insomnia in Perimenopausal Women. This was a quasi-experimental study with a control group design. The sample size of this study used the Slovin formula to obtain 80 respondents. Bivariate data using the Kolmogorov Smirnov test, if the data is normally distributed then using the paired sample t-test, and to compare between the control group and the treatment group using the ANOVA test. The results for comparing the control and treatment groups obtained p = 0.031, which means that there was a significant difference in the post-test value of insomnia complaints between the control and treatment groups, and p 0.041 < α 0.05. P 0.007 < α 0.005, meaning there was a significant difference in the post-hot Flashes complaint value between the control and treatment groups. The combination of Suryanamaskar yoga and chamomile aromatherapy provides a synergistic effect in improving insomnia and hot Flashes. It is expected that yoga and chamomile aroma therapy can be used to perimenopausal women so that they can prevent the uncontrollable perimenopause syndrome.

This study investigated the pharmacological potential of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) extracted from the leaves of Cornus officinalis, with the aim of elucidating their interactions with human olfactory receptors and transport proteins, and assessing their applicability in functional foods and aroma-based therapies. Using solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS), 22 representative VOCs were identified from age-stratified samples. Seven small bioactive molecules were selected for integrated analysis involving absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) prediction, network pharmacology, molecular docking, and spectroscopic validation. Network pharmacology analysis identified 243 predicted targets, with β-ionone emerging as a key compound interacting with multiple olfactory receptors - olfactory receptor 1A1 (OR1A1), olfactory receptor 2W1 (OR2W1), and olfactory receptor 10S1 (OR10S1) - as well as transport proteins including human serum albumin (HSA), α-lactalbumin (α-La), and β-lactoglobulin (β-LG). Functional enrichment analysis highlighted that β-ionone-related targets were involved significantly in olfactory transduction, cytochrome P450 metabolism, and neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction pathways. Molecular docking demonstrated the highest binding affinities for β-ionone across multiple protein classes, which was further validated by fluorescence and ultraviolet-visible (UV-visible) spectroscopy. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the binding process was spontaneous, mainly driven by hydrophobic and electrostatic forces. The novel contribution of this study lies in its systematic investigation of C. officinalis leaf VOCs and their interactions with human olfactory and transport proteins, an area not previously explored. This study elucidated the mechanisms of VOC-protein interactions and highlighted their potential applications in functional foods and aroma therapies. The integrated computational and experimental approach established a solid scientific basis for future screening of natural bioactive compounds with high bioavailability and sensory modulation potential. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

There is an increasing customer need for stress relief and promoting wellbeing, leading to many innovative stress relief products. Developers claim these products can reduce stress and boost well-being, but do they actually work? This study aims to examine how different products’ effectiveness varies by demographic factors through three selected product categories that are associated with stress relief: Aromatherapy, fidget toys, and mindfulness apps. Research indicates relatively stronger effectiveness of direct inhalation aromatherapy and massage aromatherapy compared to indirect inhalation aromatherapy, while showing its potential as an effective placebo. Fidget toys tend to have low effectiveness in stress relief for typically developing students, but have shown effectiveness in decreasing activity level for students with attention difficulties. Mindfulness apps show higher effectiveness in stress alleviation for adolescents with higher levels of rumination, particularly when used in conjunction with longer or more frequent meditation sessions. Overall, current studies suggest that these products are generally effective, though specific contexts and demographics may make them more or less effective, making them suitable for different users' needs.
