The temperature dependence of the mobility of aqueous fluoride ion, and the apparent molar volume of sodium fluoride

Conductances of aqueous sodium fluoride solutions have been measured at 15�, 25� and 45�C to give the limiting mobility of fluoride ion. Apparent molar volumes have been obtained by means of a continuous dilution dilatometer.

Analysis of experimental problems associated with dilute solutions in double-layer studies

A careful study of aqueous sodium fluoride solutions was carried out by the electrocapillary method. Detailed attention was given to the adsorption behaviour in dilute solutions and the results are compared with published work. Causes of discrepancies in interfacial tensions obtained directly and indirectly are examined, and found to be significantly reduced by application of appropriate experimental procedures. Localized hydrolysis and complexation effects of mercurous ions are proposed as sources of inconsistent double-layer results by different experimental approaches.

Molar conductivity of sodium fluoride in aqueous solution at 25°C. Applications of Pitts' conductivity equation

The conductivity of aqueous solutions of sodium fluoride at 25°C has been measured over the concentration range 103c= 0.8–200 mol l.–1 The results for this salt and for five other electrolytes have been analyzed by means of Pitts' full equation, modified to allow for possible incomplete dissociation of the electrolyte. The dissociation constant of a weak electrolyte such as acetic acid can be determined uniquely, independent of the value of the distance parameter a, assigned to it in Pitts' equation. But with less associated electrolytes the dissociation constant KD depends on the value of a which is used; reasonable values of a(3–7 A) give values of KD for iodic acid between 0.165 and 0.155 mol l.–1 Potassium hexafluorophosphate and sodium fluoride, and even hydrochloric acid and potassium chloride, can be treated as associated electrolytes; only for an electrolyte such as hydrochloric acid, for which there is independent evidence of virtually complete dissociation, can an unequivocal assignment to the class of “completely dissociated electrolytes” be made. For potassium fluorophosphate and sodium fluoride, activity coefficient data suggest that treatment as moderately associated salts is to be preferred.

COMPARISON OF THREE TOPICAL FLUORIDE AGENTS

A one-year clinical study was carried out on 181 school children 6 to 11 years old to compare the caries-preventive effect of three commonly used topical fluoride agents: an acid phosphate-fluoride solution (2% NaF, 0.15MH3PO4, pH 3.6), an 8 percent aqueous stannous fluoride solution, and a 2 percent aqueous sodium fluoride solution.Four groups -including the control group- were formed, each group representing as nearly as possible an equal cross section of the entire body of subjects.The most careful procedure of topical application with a tray was used; applications were performed once yearly except in one group. This group was received topical application of a 2 percent aqueous sodium fluoride solution four times in two weeks according to the method of Knutson.Considerable protection was afforded by all three of these agents, and especially by the acid phosphate-fluoride solution.

The group that received the aqueous solution, however, experienced consistently greater reductions in DMF and DF tooth and surface increments and greater protection was afforded newly erupted teeth.

The effect of supervised oral hygiene on the gingiva of children.

The effect of sodium fluoride on the gingiva of children was investigated by regularly applying sodium fluoride to the teeth and gingiva for three years in two different ways:1. In a dentifrice slurry during daily supervised toothbrushing. The concentration of sodium fluoride was approximately 0.05 %.II. As a mouth rinse with 10 ml of an 0.5 % aqueous solution of sodium fluoride once every second week.The study included two control groups. The first, supervised by a dental nurse, brushed their teeth daily, using a dentifrice free from the fluoride component. The second rinsed their mouths once every second week with distilled water.The total number of children was 471 : 236 in the experimental groups and 235 in the control groups. At the time of the clinical examination, all were 12 14 years of age.The gingival state and the oral hygiene were recorded with the indices proposed by Löe and Silness (1963). and Silness and Löe (1964).The investigation revealed that:Sodium fluoride applied by means of a dentifrice slurry did not affect the gingiva.Sodium fluoride in the concentration of 0.5 % in a mouth rinse proved detrimental to the gingiva.The GI of the “fluoride rinsing group” was 0.75, whereas that of the “distilled water rinsing group” was 0.61.These results are discussed in the light of current knowledge of the effect of fluorine in dental plaques and connective tissues.

Further studies of the electrical characteristics of oxide films on aluminium

The change of defect structure, crystal structure and thickness of γ-Al 2O 3 films during immersion in aqueous solutions of sodium chromate, chloride and fluoride were studied by a.c. capacitance and dissipation factor determinations at variable frequency, by electron microscopy and diffraction, by the elliptically polarized light method and by cathodic polarization determinations. Immersion of 260 Å thick γ-Al 2O 3 films on aluminum for eight hours in molar sodium chromate and sodium chloride solutions at pH 6 results in no detectable change of film thickness or crystal structure. However, immersion in sodium chloride results in a substantial decrease in specific resistance of the film with time at frequencies below 100,000 c/s, whereas immersion in sodium chromate maintains the resistivity at higher values which are constant with time. The lowered specific resistance in chloride solutions is considered to be due to the introduction of n type current carriers by exchange of chloride ions from solution with oxide ions. This lowers the ionic rather than the electronic resistance of the film. Similar results were obtained during immersion in sodium fluoride solution at pH 6 except that the oxide films became contaminated with a crystalline second phase which complicates interpretation of the results. It appears that a greater number of n type current carriers are created in fluoride than in chloride solutions. This results in a larger reduction of the ionic resistance of the film than is occasioned by immersion in sodium chloride solution. There is some evidence that the degree of exchange in fluoride solution is sufficient to increase the average dielectric constant of the film.
