A Systematic Investigation of the Kinetic Models Applied to the Transport Behaviors of Aromatic Solvents in Unfilled Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber/Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Composites.

Kinetic models of solvent transport behaviors are widely used in rubber-solvent systems, and some key points are still worthy of attention. In this work, the Korsmeyer-Peppas and Peppas-Sahlin models were chosen to fit the transport behaviors of three aromatic solvents, benzene, toluene and p-xylene, in the hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR)/ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM)-based vulcanizates. The different effects of the various selected transport times (ti) used for fitting on the results of the mathematical models were compared. Moreover, a method to obtain the n parameter for the Korsmeyer-Peppas model and the m parameter for the Peppas-Sahlin model at ti = 0 was discussed. It was found that the differences in values of ti greatly influenced the impact on the fitting results of all the parameters for the two models. In addition, the n parameter for the Korsmeyer-Peppas model along with the m parameter for the Peppas-Sahlin model, which can characterize the transport mechanism, showed differing applicability. But the n and m parameters at ti = 0 obtained by linear fitting showed similar rules with some differences in values. These discussions give important guidance for the application of kinetic transport models in rubber-solvent systems.

A Fractional-order dual-continuum model to capture non-Fickian solute transport in a regional-scale fractured aquifer

Contaminant transport in fractured media exhibits complex dynamics, including multiple peaks in breakthrough curves (BTCs) and non-Fickian diffusion, thereby posing significant challenges to the application of traditional transport models. Here we undertook a detailed study of a natural-gradient tracer test conducted in a regional-scale fractured carbonate aquifer situated in southwestern Germany, where the observed BTCs contained both dual peaks and positive skewness. These BTCs were used to optimize parameters and interpret their physical meanings for several transport models, including the dual-continuum model (DCM) and the fractional derivative equation (FDE) model. Tracer concentration distributions were simulated in both single- and dual-continuum media employing the DCM and FDE models. Our results demonstrated that while the DCM model could reasonably replicate the bimodal BTC, the FDE (which accounts for solute retention) outperformed in capturing the heavy-tailed BTC. This was attributed to the limitations of grid-based numerical models that assume Fickian diffusion and fail to map small-scale medium heterogeneity exhaustively. In contrast, a parsimonious model like the FDE, with upscaled parameters, was found to be more effective in capturing regional-scale non-Fickian transport. To further characterize the multiple BTC peaks the standard FDE missed, we proposed a fractional derivative dual-continuum model (fDCM). This model was found to be adept at capturing both the multi-peak and late-time heavy tail in the BTC. Our study thus opens an alternate pathway for modeling solute transport in regional-scale fractured to partially karstified aquifers.

Festival Induced Air Quality Perturbation over an Urban Center in Eastern Nepal

An attempt has been made to investigate the changes in the characteristics of aerosol optical properties and a columnar load of carbon monoxide (CO) induced during the Dashain celebration 2018 over Birtamode, Nepal. Ground-based measurements of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) were carried out using a Microtops II sun-photometer during 13th to 25th Oct, 2018. AOD values on days before Dashain were in the range of 0.6 which increased above 1 attaining a maximum value of 1.6 on 19th. The AOD values started dropping below 1 on 24th, attaining a daily average of 0.64. The peak values on the respective days were also captured by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) AOD retrievals. A similar pattern was observed with the TROPOspheric Measuring Instrument (TROPOMI) CO column with peak value on the 19th. The air mass trajectories show that the increase in the AOD and CO values is of local origin and the CAMS GFAS wildfire flux of CO and PM2.5 show no change during the study period. However, the spatial analysis of AOD shows that the increased values are of regional nature. The results highlight the necessity of installation of low-cost air quality sensors in the region and utilization of aerosol and trace gaseous products derived from satellite remote sensing instruments at high temporal resolution and the application of chemical transport models.

Untangling the controls on bedload transport in a wood‐loaded river with RFID tracers and linear mixed modelling

AbstractBedload transport is a fundamental process by which coarse sediment is transferred through landscapes by river networks and may be well described stochastically by distributions of grain step length and rest time obtained through tracer studies. To date, none of these published tracer studies have specifically investigated the influence of large wood in the river channel on sediment transport dynamics, limiting the applicability of stochastic sediment transport models in these settings. Large wood is a major component of many forested rivers and is increasing due to anthropogenic ‘Natural Flood Management’ (NFM) practices. This study aims to investigate and model the influence of large wood on grain‐scale bedload transport.We tagged 957 cobble to pebble sized particles (D50 = 73 mm) and 28 pieces of large wood (> 1 m in length) with radio frequency identification (RFID) tracers in an alpine mountain stream. We monitored the transport distance of tracers annually over 3 years, building distributions of tracer transport distances with which to compare with published distributions from wood free settings. We also applied linear mixed modelling (LMM), to tease out the influence of wood from other controls on likelihood of entrainment, deposition, and the transport distances of sediments.Tracer sediments accumulated both upstream and downstream of large wood pieces, with LMM analysis confirming a reduction in the probability of entrainment of tracers closer to wood in all 3 years. Upon remobilization, tracers entrained from positions closer to large wood had shorter subsequent transport distances in each year. In 2019, large wood also had a trapping effect, significantly reducing the transport distances of tracer particles entrained from upstream, that is forcing premature deposition of tracers. This study demonstrates the role of large wood in influencing bedload transport in alpine stream environments, with implications for both natural and anthropogenic addition of wood debris in fluvial environments.

Discrete Element Simulation on Sand-Bed Collision Considering Surface Moisture Content

The process of aeolian sand transport is an important mechanism leading to the formation and evolution of local landforms in coastal areas and desert lakes. For a long time, the role of surface moisture in incipient motion of sand grains by wind stress has been extensively studied but, in fact, sand-bed collision is the main mechanism in steady aeolian sand flow. At present, the lack of understanding of surface moisture content on sand-bed collision limits the application of aeolian sand transport models in wet coastal areas. In this paper, we adopt numerical simulations to discuss and analyze the effect of cohesive forces formed by surface moisture content on the sand-bed collision process based on discrete element method. High density contact forces appear with the surface moisture increasing, and form a closed structure around the edge of crater to resist the avulsion in horizontal direction. Under high moisture condition, even though the ejected sand grains saltate away from the surface, the tension forces will prevent from leaving. The ejected number trend with incident velocity shows some nonlinear characteristics due to the unequally distributed force chains and liquid bridges in the unsaturated sand bed surface.

Extension of a gaseous dry deposition algorithm to oxidized volatile organic compounds and hydrogen cyanide for application in chemistry transport models.

The dry deposition process refers to flux loss of an atmospheric pollutant due to uptake of the pollutant by the Earth’s surfaces, including vegetation, underlying soil, and any other surface types. In chemistry transport models (CTMs), the dry deposition flux of a chemical species is typically calculated as the product of its surface layer concentration and its dry deposition velocity (Vd); the latter is a variable that needs to be highly empirically parameterized due to too many meteorological, biological, and chemical factors affecting this process. The gaseous dry deposition scheme of Zhang et al. (2003) parameterizes Vd for 31 inorganic and organic gaseous species. The present study extends the scheme of Zhang et al. (2003) to include an additional 12 oxidized volatile organic compounds (oVOCs) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN), while keeping the original model structure and formulas, to meet the demand of CTMs with increasing complexity. Model parameters for these additional chemical species are empirically chosen based on their physicochemical properties, namely the effective Henry’s law constants and oxidizing capacities. Modeled Vd values are compared against field flux measurements over a mixed forest in the southeastern US during June 2013. The model captures the basic features of the diel cycles of the observed Vd. Modeled Vd values are comparable to the measurements for most of the oVOCs at night. However, modeled Vd values are mostly around 1 cm s−1 during daytime, which is much smaller than the observed daytime maxima of 2–5 cm s−1. Analysis of the individual resistance terms and uptake pathways suggests that flux divergence due to fast atmospheric chemical reactions near the canopy was likely the main cause of the large model–measurement discrepancies during daytime. The extended dry deposition scheme likely provides conservative Vd values for many oVOCs. While higher Vd values and bidirectional fluxes can be simulated by coupling key atmospheric chemical processes into the dry deposition scheme, we suggest that more experimental evidence of high oVOC Vd values at additional sites is required to confirm the broader applicability of the high values studied here. The underlying processes leading to high measured oVOC Vd values require further investigation.

Impact of Ambient Particulate Matter and Ozone Exposure of Heart Transplant Recipients on All-Cause Mortality after Heart Transplant

Purpose There is limited evidence on role of air quality on chronic rejection after heart transplant (HT). We investigated the impact of particulate matter concentration (PM≥2.5 μm/m3) and ozone (O3) exposure of recipients on all-cause mortality after HT in the US. Methods UNOS Standard Transplant Analysis and Research (STAR) database (June 30, 2017) identified adult HT recipients between 2005 and 2015, and their zip code of residence at HT. Average ambient PM and daily maximum 8-hour average O3 associated with recipient residencies 1 year after HT were estimated by mapping each zip code to a census tract, using a crosswalk from HUD, downscaled from a 12 × 12-km sq grid resolution detailed chemistry - transport model application using a Bayesian space-time downscaler, and then fused with surface observations. PM concentration was classified into low ( 12 μg/m3); O3 was similarly categorized (low: 42 ppb). Inverse-probability of treatment weighted Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier curves assessed the impact of PM and O3 on 1-year and long-term incidence of all-cause mortality. Results Overall, 17,893 HT patients were included; Median follow-up was 1529 days (IQR 737-2586). 21% of HT recipients had high PM exposure and 20% had high O3 exposure. While estimates were imprecise, both high exposure levels of PM and O3, compared to low exposure, appeared to increase long-term mortality (Table). High PM exposure may also increase 1-year mortality; O3 had no impact on 1-year mortality. Conclusion PM2.5 and O3 conc are only 2 aspects of air quality and appear to increase long term risk of death after HT. Additional research on other air quality measures including isolating primary and secondary components of PM2.5 and focusing on traffic-related air pollutants is warranted for all transplant recipients.

Mixed substituent ether‐containing polyphosphazene/poly(bis‐phenoxyphosphazene) blends as membranes for CO2 separation from N2

AbstractPolyphosphazenes gain much of their physical and chemical properties from the substituents attached to the phosphorus atoms in the backbone. Poly(phosphazenes) that have short‐chain polyether containing substituents, such as, 2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethanol, have high CO2 permeability and selectivity over N2 as well as resistance to degradation under humidification at 60°C. However, the principal shortcomings of this polymer are the poor mechanical and surface characteristics. Blending of an example of this polyphosphazene (MEEP‐80) with poly(bis‐phenoxyphosphazene) (PPOP) has yielded more durable materials that have a non‐adhesive surface. In this work, the blended polymer membranes were found to have increased CO2 permeability with higher selectivity over N2. Thermal analysis and the application of transport models support a structure of the blends that is not either an intimate blend or phase separated bulk structure, but one where PPOP domains retain their crystallinity and are dispersed within an amorphous MEEP‐80 phase.

Analytical solution of reactive hybrid cells in series (HCIS) model for pollution transport through the rivers

ABSTRACT The application of accurate transport models is critical in tracer routing through river reaches. Reactive models are widely used because of the reaction and degradation properties of some pollutants with bed and bank materials, and cell-based theoretical models are among the most popular for contaminant transport simulation. This study investigates the reactive form of cells in a series model. A new analytical equation is proposed that includes a degradation term for sudden mass release in a river reach. To consider the inaccuracy of previously proposed equations, we attempted to rearrange separate transport actions such as advection, dispersion and degradation through the cells of a length unit. The cell residence times of mixed cells were equated, and the degradation action was only forced to the second cell. The parameter number of the solution was lower than in previously proposed models. Synthetic datasets of the advection–dispersion–degradation equation were used to examine model performance. The model was found to work well in the first and later units. The numerical convolution method was used in the second to fourth units, and it also fitted synthetic data. The previously proposed equation of reactive HCISD was imprecise in the convolution method.

Application of Atmospheric Chemical Transport Models to Validation of Pollutant Emissions in Moscow

Data of multiyear observations from Mosecomonitoring network stations were used to calculate the CO, NO, NO2, SO2, and PM10 emissions from urban sources, their spatial distribution, and time variations. The emission matrix thus obtained was used in the SILAM chemical transport model to estimate the air quality in the Moscow megacity. The comparisons of the calculations with the observations, performed by applying correlation relations and Student’s test, were used to correct the emission matrix. To optimize the spatial distribution of sources and the magnitude of emissions in the Moscow megacity, air pollutant fields for the summer and winter months were calculated applying chemical transport models SILAM and COSMO-ART using emissions both calculated and available from the TNO emission inventory database. Comparison of these calculations made it possible to reduce the uncertainties of estimating the air quality in the Moscow region.

CAPRAM reduction towards an operational multiphase halogen and dimethyl sulfide chemistry treatment in the chemistry transport model COSMO-MUSCAT(5.04e)

Abstract. A condensed multiphase halogen and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) chemistry mechanism for application in chemistry transport models is developed by reducing the CAPRAM DMS module 1.0 (CAPRAM-DM1.0) and the CAPRAM halogen module 3.0 (CAPRAM-HM3.0). The reduction is achieved by determining the main oxidation pathways from analysing the mass fluxes of complex multiphase chemistry simulations with the air parcel model SPACCIM (SPectral Aerosol Cloud Chemistry Interaction Model). These simulations are designed to cover both pristine and polluted marine boundary layer conditions. Overall, the reduced CAPRAM-DM1.0 contains 32 gas-phase reactions, 5 phase transfers, and 12 aqueous-phase reactions, of which two processes are described as equilibrium reactions. The reduced CAPRAM-HM3.0 contains 199 gas-phase reactions, 23 phase transfers, and 87 aqueous-phase reactions. For the aqueous-phase chemistry, 39 processes are described as chemical equilibrium reactions. A comparison of simulations using the complete CAPRAM-DM1.0 and CAPRAM-HM3.0 mechanisms against the reduced ones indicates that the relative deviations are below 5 % for important inorganic and organic air pollutants and key reactive species under pristine ocean and polluted conditions. The reduced mechanism has been implemented into the chemical transport model COSMO-MUSCAT and tested by performing 2D simulations under prescribed meteorological conditions that investigate the effect of stable (stratiform cloud) and more unstable meteorological conditions (convective clouds) on marine multiphase chemistry. The simulated maximum concentration of HCl is of the order of 109 molecules cm−3 and that of BrO is around 1×107 molecules cm−3, reproducing the range of ambient measurements. Afterwards, the oxidation pathways of DMS in a cloudy marine atmosphere have been investigated in detail. The simulations demonstrate that clouds have both a direct and an indirect photochemical effect on the multiphase processing of DMS and its oxidation products. The direct photochemical effect is related to in-cloud chemistry that leads to high dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) oxidation rates and a subsequently enhanced formation of methane sulfonic acid compared to aerosol chemistry. The indirect photochemical effect is characterized by cloud shading, which occurs particularly in the case of stratiform clouds. The lower photolysis rate affects the activation of Br atoms and consequently lowers the formation of BrO radicals. The corresponding DMS oxidation flux is lowered by up to 30 % under thick optical clouds. Moreover, high updraught velocities lead to a strong vertical mixing of DMS into the free troposphere predominately under cloudy conditions. The photolysis of hypohalous acids (HOX, X = Cl, Br, or I) is reduced as well, resulting in higher HOX-driven sulfite-to-sulfate oxidation in aerosol particles below stratiform clouds. Altogether, the present model simulations have demonstrated the ability of the reduced mechanism to be applied in studying marine aerosol–cloud processing effects in regional models such as COSMO-MUSCAT. The reduced mechanism can be used also by other regional models for more adequate interpretations of complex marine field measurement data.

A Belgian study found proximity to a motorway increased risk of BOS after LT. Using zip codes as a surrogate for habitat location we investigated the impact of PM2.5 concentration (conc) (PM≥ 2.5 μm/m3) exposure of donors and recipients on BOS and mortality after LT in the US. UNOS Standard Transplant Analysis and Research (STAR) database (June 30, 2017) identified adult LT recipients and their donors between 2005 and 2015, and their zip code of residence at LT. Average ambient PM2.5 conc (PM≥ 2.5 μm/m3) associated with donor and recipient residencies 1 year prior to LT were estimated by mapping each zip code to a census tract, using a crosswalk from HUD, downscaled from a 12 × 12-km sq grid resolution detailed chemistry - transport model application using a Bayesian space-time downscaler, and then fused with surface observations. PM2.5 conc was classified into low (<8 μg/m3), medium (8-12 μg/m3) and high (>12 μg/m3) exposure categories. Cox proportional hazards regression and Kaplan-Meier curves assessed the impact of PM2.5 on 1 year and long term incidence of BOS and all cause mortality. 17,760 LT were analyzed. Median followup was 1101 days (IQR 511-2073, range 1-4448). 25% of LT had high donor exposure and 24% had high recipient exposure. Recipient exposure to PM2.5 had no impact on 1-year survival. However, higher PM2.5 donor exposure appeared to increase risk of early death, although estimates were imprecise (Table). Higher concentration of recipient or donor PM2.5 did not increase long-term mortality risk, and curiously higher recipient PM reduced BOS incidence (Table). PM2.5 is only one aspect of air quality and does not appear to increase long term risk of BOS or death after LT. Donor PM. exposure may have a small impact on 1 year survival after LT. Additional research on other air quality measures including isolating primary and secondary components of PM2.5 and focusing on traffic-related air pollutants is needed.

The contribution of Sir Alan Wilson to spatial interaction and transport modelling

ABSTRACTIn a series of papers in the mid-1960s and early 70s, building on his key 1967 paper, Alan Wilson made a series of fundamental contributions to the specification and application of land-use transport models. In this paper the basis of his entropy-maximizing approach to spatial distribution models is outlined with a demonstration that the methods have applications very much beyond its transport roots. The entropy maximization method laid the foundations for the development of a range of multinomial logit share models. He expanded the core transport ideas to the whole range of comprehensive models, initially building on, and extending, Lowry's iconic Pittsburgh model. The factors that have sustained the longevity of Wilson's models are explored and articulated.

Biodegradation kinetics of dichlorvos and chlorpyrifos by enriched bacterial cultures from an agricultural soil

The study focuses on the biodegradation kinetics of organophosphate pesticides (OPs), chlorpyrifos and dichlorvos by enriched cultures and its application in pesticide transport models. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Taonella mepensis were the species identified in dichlorvos enriched culture (DEC) while Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Methylobacterium zatmanii were present in chlorpyrifos enriched culture (CPEC). DEC readily degraded dichlorvos as the sole carbon source at higher concentrations up to 1000 mg/L while CPEC rapidly degraded chlorpyrifos up to 100 mg/L. On addition of 1 g/L C of dextrose, dichlorvos degradation efficiency significantly increased only at higher pesticide concentrations while there was no effect on chlorpyrifos degradation. Cross-feed and mixed-feed studies highlighted that, CPEC degraded dichlorvos as a sole substrate and a mixture of both the pesticides effectively when compared to DEC. Edward inhibition and Haldane inhibition models satisfactorily simulated the biodegradation kinetics of dichlorvos and chlorpyrifos by DEC and CPEC respectively. The biokinetic parameters; maximum specific growth rate (µmax), half saturation constant (KC), yield coefficient (Y) and inhibition concentration (Ki) for the selected pesticides were thus estimated from the best fit biokinetic models. Further, batch determined biokinetic parameters were successfully applied to pesticide transport model and used to simulate breakthrough curves (BTCs) from flow-through pesticide soil column studies. The results indicated that the enriched microbes are promising candidates for insitu bioremediation of contaminated waters and soils. In addition, the estimated biokinetic constants can be used to assess the biodegradation capabilities of the enriched cultures and act as input parameters for transport models.

Intertidal boulder-based wave hindcasting can underestimate wave size: Evidence from Yorkshire, UK

Large boulder-size clasts can represent important archives of high energy erosional wave activity at the coast. From tropical coral reefs to high-latitude eroding cliffs, boulders have been used to hindcast the frequency and magnitude (height) of waves produced by both storms and tsunami. Such reconstructions are based on the balance between the hydrodynamic forces acting on individual boulders and the counteracting resistive forces of friction and gravity. We test published models on over 900 intertidal boulders on the coast at Staithes in North Yorkshire, U.K., using repeat high-resolution topographic survey data. We quantified the predicted versus actual rates of boulder movement in the field over a 7-year period (2007–2014). We assessed the degree to which local geomorphology and biology may affect the resistive forces inhibiting transport. We found that 84% of intertidal boulders predicted to be mobile remained stationary over 7 years, suggesting that in some contexts boulder movement may be significantly less than predicted, regardless of boulder volume, shape or location. In situ cementation of boulders to the substrate by marine organisms appears to play a key role in retarding or preventing boulder transport. The implication is that boulder characteristics may not always provide a reliable estimation of wave height on the coast and reliance solely on hindcasting relationships may result in under prediction of the frequency and magnitude of past storm wave activity. We suggest here that more field studies that consider boulder movement are needed, set within specific site contexts, and that these data are used to improve the applicability and robustness of boulder transport models.

Thermoelectric effect in superlattices; applicability of coherent and incoherent transport models

Calculations of thermoelectric transport coefficients including quantum effects are performed on superlattices using the Buttiker approximation. The results are compared to the Boltzmann transport equation with minibands present, and to an incoherent transport model. Comparisons are performed in the linear regime for the electrical conductivity, Seebeck and Lorenz coefficients. We show that at superlattice periods smaller than the typical electron mean free path, the former model and the calculations including quantum effects are in agreement. However, for longer superlattices the incoherent model is shown to be more correct.

Generating false negatives and false positives for As and Mo concentrations in groundwater due to well installation

Groundwater monitoring relies on the acquisition of ‘representative’ groundwater samples, which should reflect the ambient water quality at a given location. However, drilling of a monitoring well for sample acquisition has the potential to perturb groundwater conditions to a point that may prove to be detrimental to the monitoring objective. Following installation of 20 monitoring wells in close geographic proximity in central Florida, opposing concentration trends for As and Mo were observed. In the first year after well installation As and Mo concentrations increased in some wells by a factor of 2, while in others As and Mo concentrations decreased by a factor of up to 100. Given this relatively short period of time, a natural change in groundwater composition of such magnitude is not expected, leaving well installation itself as the likely cause for the observed concentration changes. Hence, initial concentrations were identified as ‘false negatives’ if concentrations increased with time or as ‘false positives’ if concentrations decreased. False negatives were observed if concentrations were already high, i.e., the As or Mo were present at the time of drilling. False positives were observed if concentrations were relatively lower, i.e., As or Mo were present at low concentrations of approximately 1 to 2μg/L before drilling, but then released from the aquifer matrix as a result of drilling. Generally, As and Mo were present in the aquifer matrix in either pyrite or organic matter, both of which are susceptible to dissolution if redox conditions change due to the addition of oxygen. Thus, introduction of an oxidant into an anoxic aquifer through use of an oxygen saturated drilling fluid served as the conceptual model for the trends where concentrations decreased with time. Mixing between drilling fluid and groundwater (i.e., dilution) was used as the conceptual model for scenarios where increasing trends were observed. Conceptual models were successfully tested through formulation and application of data-driven reactive transport models, using the USGS code MODFLOW in conjunction with the reactive multicomponent transport code PHT3D.

Curriculum vitae of the LOTOS–EUROS (v2.0) chemistry transport model

Abstract. The development and application of chemistry transport models has a long tradition. Within the Netherlands the LOTOS–EUROS model has been developed by a consortium of institutes, after combining its independently developed predecessors in 2005. Recently, version 2.0 of the model was released as an open-source version. This paper presents the curriculum vitae of the model system, describing the model's history, model philosophy, basic features and a validation with EMEP stations for the new benchmark year 2012, and presents cases with the model's most recent and key developments. By setting the model developments in context and providing an outlook for directions for further development, the paper goes beyond the common model description.With an origin in ozone and sulfur modelling for the models LOTOS and EUROS, the application areas were gradually extended with persistent organic pollutants, reactive nitrogen, and primary and secondary particulate matter. After the combination of the models to LOTOS–EUROS in 2005, the model was further developed to include new source parametrizations (e.g. road resuspension, desert dust, wildfires), applied for operational smog forecasts in the Netherlands and Europe, and has been used for emission scenarios, source apportionment, and long-term hindcast and climate change scenarios. LOTOS–EUROS has been a front-runner in data assimilation of ground-based and satellite observations and has participated in many model intercomparison studies. The model is no longer confined to applications over Europe but is also applied to other regions of the world, e.g. China. The increasing interaction with emission experts has also contributed to the improvement of the model's performance. The philosophy for model development has always been to use knowledge that is state of the art and proven, to keep a good balance in the level of detail of process description and accuracy of input and output, and to keep a good record on the effect of model changes using benchmarking and validation. The performance of v2.0 with respect to EMEP observations is good, with spatial correlations around 0.8 or higher for concentrations and wet deposition. Temporal correlations are around 0.5 or higher. Recent innovative applications include source apportionment and data assimilation, particle number modelling, and energy transition scenarios including corresponding land use changes as well as Saharan dust forecasting. Future developments would enable more flexibility with respect to model horizontal and vertical resolution and further detailing of model input data. This includes the use of different sources of land use characterization (roughness length and vegetation), detailing of emissions in space and time, and efficient coupling to meteorology from different meteorological models.

Modelling of Sediment Transport of the Mehadica River, Caras Severin County, Romania

Study case is situated in Caras-Severin County. Every sediment transport model application is different both in terms of time and space scale, study objectives, required accuracy, allocated resources, background of the study team etc. For sediment transport modelling, it is necessary to know the characteristics of the sediment in the river bed. Therefore, it is recommended to collect a number of bed sediment grap samples. These samples should be analysing in terms of grain size distribution. To solve theoretical problems of movement of water in the river Mehadica, it requires modelling of water flow in this case. Numerical modelling was performed using the program MIKE11. MIKE 11 is a user-friendly, fully dynamic, one-dimensional modelling tool for the detailed analysis, design, management and operation of both simple and complex river and channel systems. With its exceptional flexibility, speed and user friendly environment, MIKE 11 provides a complete and effective design environment for engineering, water resources, water quality management and planning applications. The Hydrodynamic (HD) module is the nucleus of the MIKE 11 modelling system and forms the basis for most modules including Flood Forecasting, Advection- Dispersion, Water Quality and Non-cohesive sediment transport modules. The MIKE 11 HD module solves the vertically integrated equations for the conservation of mass and momentum, i.e. the Saint-Venant equations. The input data are: area plan with location of cross sections; cross sections topographical data and roughness of river bed; flood discharge hydrograph. Advanced computational modules are included for description of flow over hydraulic structures, including possibilities to describe structure operation.
