The Effect of Nickel Addition on α-Fe2O3 Synthesis Using NaOH and Application as Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Material

Research has been conducted in the pursuit of developing the performance of batteries. The increasing demand for electronic devices and electric vehicles has driven the development of high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Among the various anode materials, α-Fe2O3 has attracted significant attention due to its high theoretical specific capacity of 1007 mAh/g. However, its low conductivity and poor rate capability limit its practical application. To address these issues, this study investigates the addition of nickel (Ni) into α-Fe2O3 through a co-precipitation method. The synthesized materials were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). The electrochemical performance was evaluated using an LCR meter and charge-discharge cycling. The results showed the addition of Ni improved the conductivity of the α-Fe2O3 material. The optimal Ni content was found as much as 18×10-4 mol which exhibits the highest conductivity and specific capacity. The synthesized α-Fe1.965Ni0.035O3 material demonstrated a specific charging capacity of 1.8433 mAh/g and a specific discharging capacity of 1.8388 mAh/g. These findings suggest that Ni-doped α-Fe2O3 has the potential to be a promising anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Synergistic effect of molybdenum dioxide wrapped nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes in binder-free anodes for enhanced lithium storage properties

Molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) is regarded as a potential anode for lithium-ion batteries due to its highly theoretical specific capacity. However, its further application in lithium-ion battery is largely limited by insufficient practical discharge capacity and cyclic performance. Here, MoO2nanoparticles are in-situ grown on three-dimensional nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) on nickel foam substrate homogeneously using a simple electro-deposition method. The unique structural features are favorable for lithium ions insertion and extraction and charge transfer dynamics at electrode/electrolyte interface. As a proof of concept, the as-synthesized nanocomposites have been employed as anode for lithium-ion battery, exhibiting a reversible and significantly improved discharge capacity of ∼517 mA h g-1at the current density of 150 mA g-1as well as superior cycle and rate performance. The first-principle calculations based on density functional theory and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrate a reduced energy barrier of lithium ions diffusion, improved lithium storage behavior, reduced structure collapse, and significantly enhanced charge transfer kinetics in MoO2/NCNTs nanocomposites with respect to MoO2powder. The excellent performance makes as-prepared MoO2/NCNTs nanocomposites promising binder-free anode for high performance lithium-ion batteries. This work also provides important theoretical insights for other state-of-the-art batteries design.

Formicarium-Like Micron Porous Si Synergistically Adjusted by Surface Hard-Soft Nanoencapsulation as Long-Life Lithium-Ion Battery Anode.

Micron porous silicon (MPSi) is a promising lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode that can provide enough space to effectively alleviate the volume expansion and large number of transmission channels to rapidly transport the Li-ions. However, a long-term stable MPSi anode at high current density is still a great challenge. Herein, a double-regulated formicarium like-MPSi composite using the surface hard-soft titanium dioxide-few layered MXene nanotemplate (FMPSi@TiO2@FMXene) was designed and synthesized via an in situ assembly strategy as long-life LIB anode. Such hard-soft TiO2-FMXene nanoencapsulation can collaboratively tune the internal/external stress, inhibit the volume expansion, reduce the interfacial reactions, and improve the electrical conductivity of MPSi, resulting in the great enhancement of structural stability and electrochemical performance in cycling even at high current density. Especially, this FMPSi@TiO2@FMXene anode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 1254.9 and 970.4 mAh/g after 500 cycles at 0.5 and 1 A/g, respectively. Moreover, a full cell is assembled with the FMPSi@TiO2@FMXene anode and commercial LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode, exhibiting a high capacity retention rate of 91.6% in 100 cycles. This work provides an effective surface nanoengineering tactic to obtain the structurally stable MPSi anodes by hard-soft nanotemplate for large-scale and long-term LIB application.

Liquid metal-enhanced MoS2 nanocomposite for self-healing colloidal anodes in lithium-ion batteries

Energy storage is pivotal in addressing global energy challenges, with lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) at the forefront. However, their longevity is often limited by anode material degradation. Here, we introduce a novel LM/AgNWs@MoS2 nanocomposite anode material, synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, which integrates liquid metal's fluidity with silver nanowires' conductivity and MoS2's rapid lithium-ion diffusion. This composite demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, maintaining 468 mA h g−1 over 2000 cycles at 1 A g−1, and self-heals electrode cracks, offering a significant advancement for LIBs durability and safety. The LM/AgNWs@MoS2 nanocomposite addresses the critical need for durable, self-healing anode materials in LIBs, pushing forward the development of next-generation energy storage solutions.

Progress in the application of silicon-based materials in lithium-ion batteries anodes

From the battery that powers the remote control to the battery that powers electric cars, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are a crucial component of contemporary energy storage. The large theoretical capacity of silicon anodes provides significant benefits inside LIBs. However, the main issue with the conventional silicon bulk anode is its considerable volume expansion, which forms an unstable Solid Electrolyte Interface (SEI) layer during the charge and discharge process and severely reduces battery performance and lifespan. Therefore, to solve these issues, researchers have explored multiple improved silicon anodes, three of which are mentioned in this essay. Firstly, the researchers delve into the usage of nanotechnology. When manipulating silicon particles at the nano-scale, the nano-silicon can mitigate the volume expansion, improving the reaction kinetics. Then, a composite of carbon and silicon is proposed, combining silicon's high capacitance and carbon's high conductivity. After that is the silicon-metal composite, which utilizes metals' mechanical strength and conductivity to stabilize Si anodes further and improve thermal stability. Overall, the significance of this study lies in the exploration of the application of silicon anodes in LIBs, highlighting the potential of these composite materials and advanced technology, which may help guide the future exploration of better silicon anodes.

Application of nanotechnology in the negative electrode of Si-based lithium-ion batteries

Modern electronics and electric cars frequently employ lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their excellent energy density, safety, and environmental friendliness. The anode of LIBs is typically composed of carbon. Nevertheless, it loses a lot of energy when charging and draining. Lithium metal precipitates quickly from the surface of carbon electrodes and forms dendrites. These can pass through the diaphragm and cause short circuits inside the battery, posing a public safety risk. The advantages of the silicon-based anode are excellent safety, low operating voltage, and high theoretical specific capacity. It is among the most critical potential materials for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, its drawbacks, such as volume expansion and poor electrical conductivity, limit the development of LIBs. In recent years, the emergence of nanotechnology has well solved these problems. This paper first explains how silicon-based lithium-ion batteries work and summarizes the challenges of silicon-based anodes. Then, it explores the application of nanotechnology in silicon-based anode, including different dimensions of silicon nanomaterials. After the group, the paper analyzes the shortcomings of current research and proposes future directions.

Progress of silicon and graphene composites in lithium-ion battery anodes

As society progresses, the need for high-power, long-life energy supply devices gradually increases. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with large energy reserves and high power have recently become the preferred choice. The anode of LIBs plays a crucial role in battery performance, safety, and cycle life. Typically, graphite materials are used for LIBs anodes. Still, they have drawbacks such as low first-time Coulombic efficiency, capacity degradation, safety issues, short cycle life, insufficient gram capacity, and purity and side reactions, which limit the application of LIBs. Therefore, new harmful electrode materials are in demand. Graphene and silicon are both environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. They both have the advantages of high theoretical capacity and high energy density, which are critical materials for developing LIBs. Combining the two can exert a synergistic effect and jointly improve the cycle stability of the battery. In this paper, we review the preparation methods of graphene and silicon composites in recent years, including mechanical ball milling and hydrothermal and thermal reduction methods. In addition, graphene and silicon composites have been explored for LIBs applications.

Graphite Regeneration and NCM Cathode Type Synthesis from Retired LIBs by Closed-Loop Cycle Recycling Technology of Lithium-Ion Batteries

A closed-loop regeneration process for spent LiCoO2 has been successfully designed with prior synthesis of LiNixCoyMnzO2, by the authors. This research applies the methodology to lithium-ion battery anodes, using spent graphite from a decommissioned battery in a leaching process with 1.5 mol∙L−1 malic acid and 3% H2O2 alongside LiCoO2. The filtered graphite was separated, annealed in an argon atmosphere, and the filtrate was used to synthesize NCM cathode material. Characterization involved X-ray diffraction, EDX, and SEM techniques. The regenerated graphite (RG) showed a specific discharge capacity of 340.4 mAh/g at a 0.1C rate in the first cycle, dropping to 338.4 mAh/g after 55 cycles, with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.9%. CV and EIS methods provided further material assessment. In a related study, the SNCM111 synthesized from the leaching solution showed a specific discharge capacity of 131.68 mAh/g initially, decreasing to 115.71 mAh/g after 22 cycles.

Fluorine-Doping Carbon-Modified Si/SiOx to Effectively Achieve High-Performance Anode.

To address the significant challenges encountered by silicon-based anodes in high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), including poor cycling stability, low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), and insufficient interface compatibility, this work innovatively prepares high-performance Si/SiOx@F-C composites via in situ coating fluorine-doping carbon layer on Si/SiOx surface through high-temperature pyrolysis. The Si/SiOx@F-C electrodes exhibit superior LIB performance with a high ICE of 79%, exceeding the 71% and 43% demonstrated by Si/SiOx@C and Si/SiOx, respectively. These electrodes also show excellent rate performance, maintaining a capacity of 603 mAhg-1 even under a high current density of 5000 mAg-1. Notably, the Si/SiOx@F-C electrode sustains a high reversible capacity of 829 mAh g-1 at 1000mA g-1 over 1400 cycles, and 588 mAhg-1 at 3000 mAg-1 even over 2400 cycles, capacity retention of up to 82.12%. Comprehensive characterization and analysis of the fluorine-doped carbon layer reveal its role in enhancing electrical conductivity and preventing structural degradation of the material. The abundant fluorine in the coating layer significantly increases the LiF concentration in the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film, improving interfacial compatibility and overall lithium storage performance. This method is both straightforward and effective, providing a promising blueprint for the broader application of Si-based anodes in advanced lithium batteries.

N, P co-Doped Hard Carbon Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries with Enhanced Capacity Retention and Cycle Stability.

Compared to the traditional graphite anode, heteroatom-doped polymer carbon materials have high capacity retention due to their high porosity and porous structure. Therefore, they have great potential for application in lithium-ion battery (LIB) anodes. In this work,an N, P co-doped precursor polymer material (MBPp), synthesized via a one-pot method using bisphenol-A (C-source), melamine (N-source), and 9,10-Dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (P-source). The resulting N, P-co-doped hard carbon materials (MBPs) were prepared at various pyrolysis temperatures, yielding microporous, mesoporous, and macroporous structures. MBP materials demonstrated excellent electrochemical performance as LIB anodes. Notably, MBP-900 achieved a reversible capacity of 262 mAh g-1 at 1000 mA g-1 (in 0.005-2.0 V voltage range) with a capacity retention rate of 97.2% after 1000 cycles. These findings highlight the significance of MBP materials, which possess numerous defects, large layer gaps, and excellent cycle stability, in advancing the development of polymer anode materials for LIBs.

Cross-linking γ-Polyglutamic Acid as a Multifunctional Binder for High-Performance SiOx Anode in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

SiOx is a highly promising anode material for realizing high-capacity lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity. However, the large volume change during cycling limits its practical application. The development of a binder has been demonstrated as one of the most economical and efficient strategies for enhancing the SiOx anode's electrochemical performance. In this work, a multifunctional binder (T-PGA) is fabricated by cross-linking γ-polyglutamic acid (PGA) and tannic acid (TA) for SiOx anodes. The introduction of TA into PGA helps to buffer the volume changes of the SiOx anodes, facilitate diffusion of Li+, and construct stable SEI layers. Benefiting from this proposed binder, the SiOx anode maintains a reversible capacity of 973.0 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 500 mA g-1 and the full cell, pairing with LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode, delivers a reversible capacity of 133 mA h g-1 (73.2% retention) after 100 cycles. This study offers valuable insights into advanced binders that are used in high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Elucidating the Chemical Pre-Lithiation Mechanism of Hard Carbon Anodes for Ultra-high Stability Lithium-Ion Batteries.

The hard carbon (HC) anode materials demonstrate high capacity and excellent rate performance in lithium-ion batteries. However, HC anodes suffer from excessive loss of Li+ ions during the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film, leading to poor cycling stability, which hinders their large-scale applications. Herein, a facile pre-lithiation strategy is proposed to achieve multi-functional precompensation of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) anodes. Both experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results revealed that the strategy compensated for the loss of Li+ ions and reacted with four structures of CNFs during pre-lithiation, including tiny graphite domains, CO-containing functional groups, defects, and micropores. Furthermore, the lithium in pre-lithiated carbon nanofibers (pCNFs) existed in various forms, consisting of LiC24 and LiC18, Li─O─C, quasi-metallic lithium, and Li+ ions. Moreover, the uniformly distributed lithium on the surface of pCNFs induced the formation of denser and more robust LiF/Li2CO3-rich SEI film, which promoted Li+ ions transport. As a result, pCNFs showed more stable cycling performance (369.8mAhg-1, almost no decay for 1500 cycles). This work provides deeper insight into chemical pre-lithiation and offers a simple and mild strategy for highly stable batteries.

Effect of Microstructure on Chemo-Mechanical Damage Evolution in Aluminum Foil Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Aluminum-based foil anodes could enable lithium-ion batteries with high energy density comparable to silicon and lithium metal. However, mechanical pulverization and lithium trapping within aluminum tend to cause capacity fading. The complex interplay between these damage modes is not well understood, as well as the role of microstructure on reaction front evolution. Here, we investigate aluminum foils with different compositions and processing conditions to understand how microstructure influences chemo-mechanical degradation. Backscattered electron imaging of ion-milled foil cross sections is used to visualize reaction front evolution and chemo-mechanical degradation. We find that the shape of the reaction front during lithiation is strongly affected by foil composition, defect distribution, and grain size, which, in turn, affects the evolution of chemo-mechanical damage within the foils. Furthermore, a key finding is that the extent of fracture upon delithiation is inversely related to lithium trapping, with foil compositions that exhibit uniform lithiation, and therefore, less fracturing showing greater lithium trapping. Nonreactive precipitate inclusions within alloy foils are also found to induce void formation. This work shows that material design strategies designed to overcome the inverse fracture-lithium trapping relationship could be useful for improving performance. Energy Storage in Carbon Fiber-Based Batteries: Trends and Future Perspectives

Carbon fiber-based batteries, integrating energy storage with structural functionality, are emerging as a key innovation in the transition toward energy sustainability. Offering significant potential for lighter and more efficient designs, these advanced battery systems are increasingly gaining ground. Through a bibliometric analysis of scientific literature, the study identifies three primary research areas: (i) the development of anodes for lithium-ion batteries, tackling challenges such as dendrite formation and performance degradation; (ii) the creation of new carbon fiber-based cathodes with coatings of LiFePO4, LiCoO2, or other nanoparticles, alongside efforts to develop cobalt-free alternatives; and (iii) the advancement of solid electrolytes that achieve a balance between ionic conductivity and mechanical strength. These advancements position carbon fiber-based batteries as promising solutions for seamless integration into various structural applications. The analysis of publication trends, citation patterns, and collaboration networks provides critical insights into the ongoing technological developments, current research challenges, and emerging trends in this field. Moreover, the study highlights potential research directions, underscoring the importance of continuous innovation to fully realize the potential of carbon fiber-based energy storage technologies.

Rational design of alginate-derived network binder for high-performance silicon-based anodes in Li-ion batteries

This study developed a novel alginate-derived network binder, SAH, to enhance the performance and stability of silicon-based anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Integrating acrylic acid and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate with sodium alginate through a one-pot polymerization and in-situ cross-linking method, SAH effectively addresses the volumetric expansion challenges associated with silicon anodes. This innovative binder maintains the structural integrity of the silicon anode through its rigid acrylic acid component, while the flexible acrylic-2-hydroxyethyl ester serves as a dynamic buffer to enhance flexibility. Sodium alginate contributes its intrinsic beneficial properties and imparts a robust three-dimensional network structure through effective coupling, allowing the binder to accommodate silicon volume changes during battery operation. Consequently, lithium-ion batteries incorporating this binder exhibited improved stability and extended cycle life, achieving an impressive capacity retention rate of 87.3 % after 100 cycles at 0.5C. This study highlights the potential of biopolymeric materials in enhancing the functionality of silicon-based anodes, contributing to the ongoing development of high-performance energy storage technologies.

Multilayer-coating process for the synthesis of nickel-silicate composite with high Ni loading as high-rate performance lithium-ion anode material

BackgroundMetal silicates possess several important advantages as electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), including straightforward synthesis, low cost, and high thermal stability. A green synthesis routes that are capable of increasing metal loading and reducing the impact on the environment are required. MethodsA Ni-silicate with a multilayer structure and a Ni/Si molar ratio of 0.25 is first prepared using the co-precipitation method. The as-synthesized product is then repeatedly immersed in a Ni2+ solution to obtain Ni-silicate with the desired Ni contents (Ni/Si molar ratio: 0.50–2.00). Finally, the resulting Ni-silicate is reconstructed by hydrothermal treatment under various temperatures (70 °C, 100 °C, 150 °C) and durations (3 h and 24 h) to obtain Ni-phyllosilicate. The effects of the hydrothermal treatment temperature, hydrothermal time, and Ni/Si ratio on the structure, morphology, and surface area of the Ni-silicate composites are examined. Significant FindingsThe Ni-silicate with a Ni/Si ratio of 1.5 has a reversible capacity of 729 mAhg-1, which exceeds traditional graphite anodes (372 mAhg-1). Furthermore, the material exhibits a capacity retention of up to 80 % as the current density is increased from 0.025 Ag-1 to 0.5 Ag-1. Thus, the synthesized Ni-silicate composite is a promising candidate material for LIB anode.
