Research trends of neoadjuvant therapy in lung cancer: a bibliometric analysis

BackgroundLung cancer is the most prevalent malignancy worldwide. Only a fraction of early-stage patients undergo radical surgery; however, many still experience recurrence and metastasis within 5 years postoperatively (approximately 30–75%). Neoadjuvant therapy has revolutionized the treatment approach for lung cancer, with a growing number of clinical trials investigating this modality. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of neoadjuvant therapy in lung cancer, intending to guide future research.MethodTo extract literature on neoadjuvant therapy for lung cancer published in the Web of Science Core Collection, spanning January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2023. Utilizing software tools including VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and GraphPad Prism to conduct bibliometric analysis and visualization studies on countries, institutions, journals, authors, co-cited references, and keywords in this field.ResultsA sum of 6,085 research publications from 84 countries were analyzed, with the United States leading in publications on neoadjuvant therapy for lung cancer. The institution that publishes the most articles is the University of Texas System. The most published journal is Annals of Thoracic Surgery, while the most frequently co-cited journal is Journal of Clinical Oncology. Eight of the top ten co-cited references concern immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs). Keyword burst analysis indicates that the current research focuses and trends mainly center around four areas: ICIs, clinical trials, efficacy, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).ConclusionsThis is the first bibliometric study of neoadjuvant therapy in lung cancer. Over the past two decades, interest in this field has steadily increased, particularly since 2017. The United States is the largest contributor and has the highest number of publications in this field. Immune checkpoint inhibitors, clinical trials, efficacy, and NSCLC are hotspots in neoadjuvant therapy for lung cancer, both now and in the foreseeable future.

Abstract 4136398: Gender Disparities Absent in Citation Metrics and Online Attention Across Thoracic Surgery Publications

Introduction: A recent study by Women As One highlighted the prevalence of “MANuscripts” (publications authored solely by men) and their potential impact on equity in academic promotions within cardiology. The study revealed notable differences in citation rates and online attention between publications in cardiology journals led by male and female authors. To further explore these disparities, we examined publications in prominent thoracic surgery journals. Hypothesis: Thoracic surgery publications where women hold key authorship roles (primary and senior) receive lower citations and online attention compared to those with men as leading authors. Methods: We analyzed data from peer-reviewed publications in 2019 from two high-impact thoracic surgery journals: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Citation metrics and Altmetric Attention Scores (AAS) were sourced from Google Scholar paired with the Altmetric Google Chrome extension. Citation rates, AAS, and names of primary and senior authors were manually collected between September 22, 2023 and December 21, 2023. The genders of key authors were determined using Genderize, a gender-determination software, supplemented by manual searches for authors not detected by the software. A minimal number of publications were excluded if either their AAS or citation metrics were unavailable. Significant differences in the data were analyzed using one-sided Mann-Whitney U-tests. Results: Of the 1,482 authors included in the analysis, 18.4% were females in primary or senior roles. Our analysis found no significant differences in citation rates or AAS between male and female primary authors (p=0.09 and p=0.31, respectively), or between male and female senior authors (p=0.48 and p=0.38, respectively). Furthermore, after combining the data of male primary and senior authors and comparing it to the combined data of female primary and senior authors, no significant discrepancies were found for both citations (p=0.13) and AAS (p=0.28). Conclusion: Contrary to analyses of cardiology journals, our data from thoracic surgery articles does not indicate a gender disparity between male and female authors in terms of citations and online attention. While this does not definitively rule out the presence of inequity in thoracic surgery research, it suggests that male-authored manuscripts may not be a primary source of gender disparity in this field.

Top 50 most influential publications in robotic-assisted pulmonary lobectomy

BackgroundSince the early 2000s, robotic-assisted surgery has evolved in the field of thoracic surgery, and robotic-assisted pulmonary lobectomy (RAPL) has become a popular and safe treatment method for patients seeking removal of lung cancer. The purpose of the current study was to identify and examine the top-50 most influential articles in RAPL from 2003 to 2021 using bibliometric analysis. Hypothesis, materials, and methodsThe Clarivate Web of Science Core Collection was systematically searched to gather data on RAPL. Descriptive information for each article was collected and reported using descriptive statistics. The terms “robotic” AND “pulmonary” AND “lobectomy” were used to search this database and returned 468 articles published since 2003. ResultsBibliometric analysis of the top-50 most influential manuscripts concluded that these articles were published between the years 2003 and 2021 and were collectively cited 2476 times. Mean number of total citations per article was 49.5 (95% confidence interval [37.8, 61.2]). The most influential articles experienced greatest increase in citations in 2020 with 450 total citations and an average of 9.0 citations per article. Our analysis demonstrated an increase in total number of citations for RAPL from 2003 to 2021, and 68% of the most cited articles were published after 2016. All 50 articles were published in English, and the United States (32) and the People's Republic of China (6) had the top number of publications. The top affiliation was the University of Michigan with 6 publications. The most popular journals were Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, with 7 and 6, respectively, of the top 50 manuscripts. ConclusionGiven the rising popularity of RAPL since 2003, a current list of the most influential articles in RAPL can provide a reference point to guide better practice and address future areas of thoracic research.

Bibliometric analysis of the top 100 highly cited articles on sublobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer

ObjectivesThe goal of this research is to pinpoint the top 100 most frequently referenced studies on sublobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer.MethodsWe identified the top 100 most frequently referenced studies on sublobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer by searching the Web of Science database. We extracted key information from the selected studies, including the author, journal, impact factor, type of article, year of publication, country, organization, and keyword.ResultsTo the best of our understanding, this is the inaugural bibliometric study on sublobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer. The publication years of the top 100 most frequently referenced studies span from 1994 to 2022, with citation counts ranging from 51 to 795. The majority of the included studies are original (93/100) and primarily retrospective studies (82/93). The United States leads in terms of published articles and citations, with the Annals of Thoracic Surgery being the most frequently sourced journal (n = 27). High-density keywords primarily originate from limited resection, lobectomy, survival, carcinoma, recurrence, randomized trial, radiotherapy, lung cancer, outcome, 2 cm, as revealed by CiteSpace analysis.ConclusionsOur research compiles and analyzes the top 100 most frequently referenced studies in the field of sublobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer. The United States has the most published and cited works on this topic. Currently, the hot keywords for sublobectomy research are gradually shifting towards prognosis and obtaining better evidence-based medical evidence to demonstrate its value in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer.

A bibliometric analysis of myocardial bridge combined with myocardial infarction.

The aim of this study is to analyze the process and frontiers of research in myocardial bridges (MB) to identify future research directions in the last 3 decades. Relevant literature on MB combined with myocardial infarction (MI) was searched from 1991 to 2023 in the Web of Science database, and was analyzed by bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the R package "bibliometrix." A total of 1233 English articles were included in this study. The number of published articles showed an increasing trend yearly. From 2017 to 2022, the annual publication volume rose rapidly, and in 2021 the publication volume even reached 95 articles, which was the highest in all years. These publications were from 68 countries and 1854 institutions, with the leading country being the U.S. and the leading institution being Columbia University. Myoho Clinical International has a close collaborative relationship with Columbia University, while in recent years, the Harvard Medical School has explored the study of MB combined with MI. Annals of Thoracic Surgery was the journal with the highest number of publications, and Takayama Hiroo and Naka Yoshifumi were the authors with the highest number of publications. The most common keywords were MI, cardiogenic shock, and MB. Our findings can help researchers explore the current status of MB combined with MI research and choose new survey routes for upcoming studies. Prevalence and prognosis, mechanism of MB combined with MI and molecular mechanism may become the focus of future research. In addition, more research and cooperation are needed worldwide.

Insight into the research history and trends of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection: a bibliometric analysis

BackgroundTotal anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is a rare congenital heart disease characterized by the inability of all pulmonary veins to connect to the left atrium. Our previous bibliometric article summarized the characteristics of only the 100 most cited papers in TAPVC research. The purpose of this study was to use comprehensive bibliometric analysis to examine the development history, current status, and future trends in the field of TAPVC.MethodsAll publications on TAPVC published between 2000 and 2023 were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection. The publication and citation data were quantitatively analyzed by publication year, country, institution, author, and journal. Co-authorship and co-occurrence analyses were performed using VOSviewer, and keyword and reference bursts were identified using CiteSpace. Pearson’s test was used to examine the correlations between two continuous variables.ResultsAs of July 20, 2023, we identified 368 publications with 3320 citations. These publications were published in 132 journals and authored by 1835 researchers from 457 institutions in 47 countries. For the number of publications, the top country, top institution, top author, and top journals were the United States (n = 82), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (n = 13), Huiwen Chen (n = 9), and Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Pediatric Cardiology (n = 29 each), respectively. For the number of citations, the top country, top affiliation, top author, and top journal were the United States (n = 1348), University of Toronto (n = 250), Christopher A. Caldarone (n = 315), and Annals of Thoracic Surgery (n = 746), respectively. The number of national publications significantly correlated with GDP (R = 0.887, P < 0.001), research & development (R&D) expenditure (R = 0.375, P = 0.013), population (R = 0.694, P < 0.001), and journals (R = 0.751, P < 0.001). The number of national citations significantly correlated with GDP (R = 0.881, P < 0.001), R&D expenditure (R = 0.446, P = 0.003), population (R = 0.305, P = 0.037), and journals (R = 0.917, P < 0.001). International collaboration in the field of TAPVC was not well developed. The most commonly cited publication discussed era changes in mortality and reoperation rate in TAPVC patients. The most common keywords were “total anomalous pulmonary venous connection” and “congenital heart disease”. The keyword “case report” appeared most recently, with an average occurrence year of 2021.8. The co-occurrence analysis grouped 26 keywords into six themes: surgical repair of TAPVC, postoperative pulmonary vein stenosis, surgical repair of TAPVC patients with heterotaxy, application of echocardiography in diagnosing TAPVC, application of echocardiography in the prenatal diagnosis of TAPVC, and application of the sutureless technique in the surgical repair of TAPVC patients with right atrial isomerism or a single ventricle. Citation burst detection identified 32 references with citation bursts, seven of which had ongoing citation bursts until 2023.ConclusionsThis study conducted a bibliometric analysis to provide a comprehensive overview of TAPVC research. We hope to offer new ideas for promoting development in the field of TAPVC.

The 100 most cited papers on total anomalous pulmonary venous connection: a bibliometric analysis

BackgroundThe number of citations a paper receives reflects its impact on the scientific community. We aimed to identify and explore the characteristics of the most cited papers on total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC).MethodsWeb of Science Core Collection Expanded Science Citation Index (1900 to present) was searched and papers on TAPVC were reviewed. Articles were ranked by the number of citations and the 100 most cited papers were analyzed.ResultsThe 100 most cited papers were published between 1952 and 2018 with a mean number of citations of 52 (range 26 to 148). The 1990s was the most productive decade. All articles except one were written in English. The 100 most cited articles were published in 24 journals, led by Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (21 articles), followed by Annals of Thoracic Surgery (20 articles), and Circulation (16 articles). The United States of America contributed most of the 100 most cited papers (60 articles). Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto led the list of citation classics with six papers. Christopher A. Caldarone, John W. Kirklin, and P. E. F. Daubeney were the most productive authors with 3 articles each. More than half of the papers were cohort studies (51 articles). Surgery, radiology and etiology were the main topics. Thirty-one articles were funded by public foundations, and none received support from commercial companies.ConclusionsThe bibliometric analysis gives a historical perspective on scientific progress in the field of TAPVC and lays the foundation for future research.

Visual analysis based on CiteSpace software: a bibliometric study of atrial myxoma.

To use CiteSpace and VOSviewer visual metrology to analyze the research status, frontier hotspots, and trends in research on atrial myxoma. The Web of Science core collection database was used to retrieve relevant literature on atrial myxoma from 2001 to 2022. CiteSpace software was used to analyze keywords with a co-occurrence network, co-polymerization class, and burst terms, and a corresponding visual atlas was drawn for analysis. A total of 893 valid articles were included. The country with the highest number of articles was the United States (n = 186). The organization with the highest number of articles was the Mayo Clinic (n = 15). The author with the highest number of articles was Yuan SM (n = 12). The highest cited author was Reynen K (n = 312). The highest cited journal was Annals of Thoracic Surgery (n = 1,067). The most frequently cited literature was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1995, which was cited 233 times. The keywords co-occurrence, copolymerization analysis, and Burst analysis revealed that the main research focuses were surgical methods, case reports, and genetic and molecular level studies on the pathogenesis of myxoma. This bibliometric analysis revealed that the main research topics and hotspots in atrial myxoma included surgical methods, case reports, genetic and molecular studies.

The 100 most cited papers on thymoma: a bibliometric analysis

ObjectivesThe aim of this bibliometric analysis was twofold: to identify the 100 most cited research articles on thymoma and to highlight future research opportunities in light of past and current research efforts.MethodsThe Web of Science database was queried to identify the 100 most cited articles on thymoma. Imformations relevant to scientific research were extracted and analyzed: first author, journal, impact factor, type of article, year of publication, country, organization and keywords.ResultsThe publication year of the top 100 most cited articles ranged from 1981 to 2018, and the number of citations ranged from 97 to 1182. Most of the included articles are original (75/100) and are mainly retrospective studies (52/75). The United States has the most published articles and citations, and the Annals of Thoracic Surgery is the most sourced journal (n = 16). Through VOSviewer analysis, high-density keywords mainly come from thymic carcinoma/invasive thymoma management, immune-related diseases, and laboratory research.ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first bibliometric study on thymoma. We found most of the top 100 most cited articles are original and retrospective research. The United States has the published and cited works. Presently, the hot keywords for thymoma research has gradually tilted towards immune-related diseases and laboratory research.
