Physical Education in the Al Quran Perspective
 • Mar 16, 2026
 • ETDC: Indonesian Journal of Research and Educational Review
 • Akbar Yusuf + 2 more

Physical education plays a crucial role in shaping human beings holistically, yet in formal educational practice it is often narrowly understood as merely physical activity without the integration of Islamic values. This study aims to examine the concept of physical education from the perspective of the Qur'an, its relationship to physical health and the quality of worship, and its contribution to shaping healthy, strong, and noble individuals. This study uses a qualitative approach of the literature study type with the tafsir mawḍū‘ī method. Data were analyzed from Qur'anic verses, classical and contemporary tafsir literature, hadith, and the views of scholars. The research findings show that the Qur'an views the physical (jasad) and spiritual (rūḥ) dimensions as an inseparable whole. The term "quwwah" is redefined to encompass not only muscular strength but also the aspects of capability (qudrah), moral integrity (wara‘), consistency (wuṣūl), and submission (tawakkul). The Qur'anic narrative about the Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and Thalut emphasizes that the ideal human quality is a combination of physical strength (al-qawiyy) and moral integrity (al-amīn). Quranic-based physical education plays a vital role in shaping individuals capable of optimally fulfilling the role of khalīfah through maintaining health in line with the principles of maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah, particularly hifẓ al-nafs (protecting the soul) for the perfection of worship. Thus, physical education is an integral component in realizing the ideals of insān kāmil.

Prophetic Parenting and the Crisis of Fatherlessness: Lessons from Ibrahim and Jacob in Tafsir al-Kasyaf
 • Mar 9, 2026
 • QiST: Journal of Quran and Tafseer Studies
 • Siti Mukholifah + 1 more

The phenomenon of fatherlessness has emerged as a significant global social issue, influ-encing children's psychological well-being, identity formation, and moral development. While existing scholarship has largely examined fatherlessness through psychological and sociological frameworks, Qur'anic narratives on father-child relationships are often treated primarily within theological discourse. Consequently, there remains limited explo-ration of how classical Qur'anic exegesis can contribute to contemporary discussions on parenting and family crises. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the concept of paternal parenting in the stories of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ya'qub through the in-terpretive lens of Tafsir al-Kashshāf by al-Zamakhsharī and examines its relevance to the modern phenomenon of fatherlessness. This research employs a qualitative library-based approach combined with thematic Qur'anic interpretation (tafsīr mawḍū'ī). The analysis focuses on key Qur'anic passages related to father-son interactions, particularly Q.S. al-Ṣāffāt:102 and Q.S. Yūsuf:4-5, interpreted through the linguistic-rational framework characteristic of Tafsir al-Kashshāf. Data are analyzed descriptively and interpretatively to identify the parenting principles embedded within the exegetical discourse. The find-ings demonstrate that Tafsir al-Kashshāf articulates a prophetic model of paternal parent-ing grounded in three interrelated principles: democratic companionship, dialogical com-munication, and secure emotional attachment. Prophet Ibrahim's interaction with Ismail il-lustrates participatory decision-making and consultative dialogue, while Prophet Ya'qub's relationship with Yusuf reflects emotional attentiveness and psychological protection that foster a secure relational environment. This study contributes to Qur'anic studies by highlighting the contemporary relevance of classical exegesis in addressing modern social challenges. Furthermore, it offers a conceptual framework for integrating Qur'anic parent-ing values into contemporary family discourse, emphasizing the father's emotional pres-ence, communicative engagement, and moral leadership as essential elements in mitigating the fatherlessness crisis in modern societies.

Def. Contemplative Reasoning in the Prophets’ Stories in the Holy Qur’an and its Role in the Call to Islam: The story of Abraham, peace be upon him, is an example.
 • Jan 15, 2026
 • ijhss
 • Dr Walaa Hasan Al-Mathkuri

The Qur’anic narratives of the prophets occupy a distinguished place in the Book of Allah, as they embody profound lessons that transcend mere historical storytelling to serve as a source of reflection and contemplation. The prophets (peace be upon them) employed various methods in calling their people to the oneness and worship of Allah, among which were reflective thinking and rational reasoning—two essential pillars of their prophetic character and fundamental components of their journey toward truth. This study aims to clarify the concept of reflective thinking and its Qur’anic foundations, while examining the applications of this approach in Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) call as depicted in the Qur’an. It further seeks to highlight its features and manifestations, and to explore the potential of employing reflective thinking in contemporary da‘wah (Islamic outreach). The problem addressed in this study lies in the limited use of Qur’anic stories to develop deep thinking skills among preachers, as most approaches tend to focus merely on the narrative or moral aspects. The research concludes that reflective thinking in the story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) served as an effective tool for the success of his mission, enabling him to understand the nature of his people, analyze their behavior, and select appropriate methods of invitation—such as contemplating the universe and extraordinary phenomena, adopting rational dialogue, and deeply considering the divine wisdom behind trials. The study recommends expanding this topic through a broader examination of other prophetic narratives to contribute to the development of the Qur’anic perspective on reflective and intellectual da‘wah.

 • Dec 31, 2025
 • TAJDID: Jurnal Ilmu Ushuluddin
 • Zakiyatun Najwa + 3 more

This article examines the recontextualization of Isrā’īliyyāt in Felix Siauw’s interpretations of the Qur’anic narratives of the Prophets Joseph and Moses. As a popular religious figure among converts in digital media, Felix Siauw’s discourse constitutes a strategic arena for examining the negotiation of Isrā’īliyyāt within contemporary Indonesian social, cultural, and ideological contexts. This study employs a qualitative approach, integrating netnography and content analysis, to analyze Felix’s strategies of contextualization, patterns of audience interaction with the narratives presented, and the hermeneutical constructions underlying his interpretations. The findings indicate that Isrā’īliyyāt are recontextualized by linking prophetic stories to contemporary socio-political issues and popular cultural references, including global conflicts, critiques of state food governance, transnational Muslim concerns, and popular media narratives. Audience responses demonstrate a spectrum of religious literacy, ranging from passive acceptance to critical engagement through practices of verification, critique, and correction. The construction of meaning in Felix’s interpretation of Isrā’īliyyāt draws on the principles of munāsabah, narrative reconstruction, and cultural analogy. Social, artistic, and educational backgrounds, along with post-HTI Islamist ideological orientations, shape variations in prophetic narratives, positioning Qur’anic stories as ideal models for contemporary life. Academically, this study contributes to the theoretical and methodological development of Isrā’īliyyāt studies in the digital age by highlighting how these narratives are negotiated, adapted, and interpreted within contemporary Indonesian digital religious discourse.

One form of divine education for humans is realized through the stories told in the Koran. The story of Ashabul Kahf is part of the Qur'anic narrative which is full of values of faith, steadfast principles, and divine protection for a group of young people who maintain monotheism amidst the pressures of an infidel environment. This research aims to reveal the thematic meaning of the story of Ashabul Kahf through a maudhu'i (thematic) tafsir approach, by tracing the verses of the QS. Al-Kahf: 9–26 and examines various interpretations from classical and contemporary scholars such as Ibn Kathir, Al-Maraghi, and M. Quraish Shihab. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive method, with data collection techniques through literature studies that examine various relevant academic literature sources. The research results show that the story of Ashabul Kahf contains the main message about steadfastness of faith (tsabat al-iman), moral courage, and total surrender to Allah as a form of pure monotheism. This story also affirms God's power over time and human life, while also reflecting that God's protection and help will always accompany His faithful and consistent servants. The story's relevance in the contemporary context is evident in efforts to foster the character of the younger generation of Muslims, ensuring they remain steadfast in the values of faith and integrity amidst the challenges of modernity

A Qur'anic Approach to Family Communication: The Example of Noah's Dialogue with His Son
 • Oct 15, 2025
 • Şırnak Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi
 • Mustafa Yıldız

The family is not only the primary social institution that meets individuals’ basic needs, but also the oldest structured unit in which ongoing communication between parents and children is sustained. It plays a vital role in the transmission of religious, moral, and cultural values, as well as in the socialization of individuals. Accordingly, the presence of a healthy family structure is a prerequisite for a healthy society. While parents bear significant responsibilities in transmitting tradition, flawed methods and inappropriate wording may harm communication, particularly with individuals susceptible to modern ideologies. The frequent generational conflicts observed today often originate from such communication problems. In this context, Qur’anic narratives—especially the dialogue between Prophet Noah and his son—offer valuable insights into the principles of intra-family communication. The incident that took place during the Flood is described in the Qur’an as follows: “And [the Ark] sailed with them through waves like mountains. And Noah called out to his son, who stood apart: ‘O my dear son! Embark with us and do not be among the disbelievers.’ He replied: ‘I shall take refuge on a mountain that will protect me from the water.’ Noah said: ‘There is no protection today from the decree of God, except for those to whom He grants mercy.’ Then a wave came between them, and he was among the drowned” (Hūd 11:42–43). The aim of this study is to offer reflections on family communication in light of this brief yet profoundly meaningful dialogue, in which Noah’s son ultimately rejects his father’s plea. The central objective is to identify the core principles of family communication exemplified in this exchange. This study employs both descriptive and analytical methods, with the analytical approach being the predominant one. While Noah’s son is portrayed as bold, determined, and defiant, Noah himself is presented as a hopeful and compassionate father and prophet who persistently uses a gentle and persuasive tone. Ultimately, this Qur’anic narrative underscores the significance of compassion, patience, hope, and persuasion as fundamental elements in effective family communication.

AUGMENTED REALITY MUSHAF: MENGHIDUPKAN KEMBALI SENI TAFSIR VISUAL
 • Aug 16, 2025
 • NIHAYAH: Journal of Islamic Studies
 • Muhammad Syauqi

This article explores the potential of the Augmented Reality Mushaf (AR Mushaf) as a contemporary medium to revitalize the visual exegesis of the Qur'an, a tradition that has diminished in the face of modernization. The study adopts a development research approach, involving interdisciplinary collaboration among Qur'anic scholars, calligraphers, and AR developers. A prototype of the AR Mushaf was developed and tested with three user groups—traditional Islamic boarding school students, Muslim university students, and converts to evaluate user responses regarding the reading experience and understanding of Qur'anic verses. The findings reveal that AR enables thematic exegesis through infographic animations, vocabulary clarification via augmented notes, and three-dimensional visualization of Qur'anic narratives. Approximately 78% of participants reported improved contextual comprehension of verses, and 62% felt a deeper reading experience, though 15% expressed concern about distraction from the sacred text. The discussion highlights the continuity between classical manuscript illumination and modern visual technology as a renewed form of Islamic artistic heritage. Additionally, the article addresses ethical and pedagogical considerations in the development of religious technologies, particularly the limits of sacred visualization and developers’ responsibilities in preserving Qur'anic integrity. The study concludes that AR Mushaf offers a promising bridge between tradition and innovation, provided it is guided by culturally and theologically sensitive development frameworks.

Dialectical engagement with biblical narratives in Ibn ‘Ashur's Tafsīr Al-Taḥrīr wa Al-Tanwīr: Study of Aaron, Jesus, and Noah's Wife narratives
 • Aug 2, 2025
 • Research Journal in Advanced Humanities
 • Hurnawijaya + 10 more

The historical marginalization of direct engagement with Biblical texts within Islamic exegetical traditions has contributed to an ahistorical perception of the Qur'ān's narrative relationship with Judeo-Christian traditions. While classical mufassirūn (exegetes) predominantly relied on orally transmitted Isrā'īliyyāt narratives rather than engaging directly with Biblical texts, this methodological limitation began to shift significantly in the colonial era. This article examines the critical dialectic methodology employed by Muhammad al-Tahir Ibn 'Ashur (1879-1973) in his magnum opus, al-Taḥrīr wa al-Tanwīr, as a pivotal epistemological intervention in modernist Qur'anic hermeneutics. Operating within the complex socio-intellectual landscape of French colonial Tunisia, Ibn ‘Āshūr developed a sophisticated hermeneutical framework that directly engaged Biblical texts while simultaneously challenging their narratological authority. Through comparative textual analysis of three paradigmatic narratives—the Golden Calf episode (QS. Ṭāhā), the Christology of Jesus/'Isa (QS. Maryam), and the status of Noah's wife (QS. Taḥrīm)—this study reveals how Ibn 'Ashur's critical dialectic represents an epistemological negotiation between traditional Islamic exegetical principles and modern text-critical methodologies. The findings demonstrate that Ibn 'Ashur's approach transcends mere apologetics by constructing a multi-layered hermeneutical framework that simultaneously validates the Qur'anic narrative through rational argumentation, historical contextualization, and linguistic analysis while positioning it as an epistemologically superior corrective to perceived Biblical inconsistencies. This research contributes to the evolving understanding of Muslim intellectual responses to modernity and colonialism through textual engagement, revealing how comparative scriptural hermeneutics functioned as both intellectual resistance and epistemological restructuring in early 20th century Islamic reformism

Qur’anic Models for Social Welfare Policy: Insights from Prophet Yusuf and Zulkarnain in Addressing Indonesian Social Justice Challenges
 • Jul 30, 2025
 • Jurnal Sosiologi Agama Indonesia (JSAI)
 • Alif Hibatullah + 1 more

Indonesia’s diverse society faces persistent challenges from environmental uncertainty and social conflict, which threaten both economic security and social cohesion. Existing welfare initiatives, such as the bantuan sosial (bansos) program and food estate projects, have achieved limited success due to structural weaknesses, inaccurate targeting, and the risk of long-term dependency. These issues point to the need for an ethically grounded and contextually relevant welfare policy framework. This study introduces a normative model of social welfare based on Qur’anic narratives—specifically the stories of Prophet Yusuf and Zulkarnain—interpreted through Paul Spicker’s social welfare theory. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach and content analysis of Qur’anic verses, the research identifies core principles aligned with Spicker’s framework: basic needs fulfillment, rights protection, and equitable resource access. This integration of Qur’anic ethics with modern welfare theory offers a novel policy perspective for Indonesia. Key findings show that Prophet Yusuf’s approach to social assistance relied on barter systems to foster independence, complemented by strategies emphasizing job creation, sustainable land use, and active collaboration between government and society. The involvement of social workers as strategic partners strengthens policy implementation and community empowerment. While the conceptual model advances theoretical understanding, further empirical validation in real policy contexts is needed. This research demonstrates that social policies rooted in Qur’anic values and contemporary welfare theory can provide a viable pathway toward a more just and prosperous Indonesian society.

Pragmatic Violations of the Cooperative Principle in the Narrative of Prophet Ibrahim: Implications for Islamic Da'wah
 • Jul 16, 2025
 • Al-Irfan : Journal of Arabic Literature and Islamic Studies
 • Salma Nur Istiqomah + 2 more

This study aims to examine violations of Grice’s Cooperative Principle in the story of Prophet Ibrahim based on QS. Al-Anbiya: 51–70, and to explore its relevance to contemporary da'wah strategies. The focus of the research is directed at prophetic dialogues involving Ibrahim that contain maxim violations—quantity, quality, relevance, and manner—not merely as linguistic deviations but as rhetorical strategies to convey the message of monotheism persuasively and contextually. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive method with a pragmatic content analysis approach. Data were collected through documentation of Qur’anic verses containing dialogical narratives, particularly from Surah Al-Anbiya, and were analyzed based on the Cooperative Principle and Conversational Implicature theory developed by H. P. Grice. The findings reveal four key verses that strategically demonstrate maxim violations: QS 21:53 (relevance), QS 21:56 (quantity), QS 21:63 (quality), and QS 21:66 (manner). These violations do not hinder communication; rather, they serve as rhetorical devices to provoke the audience’s awareness of the irrationality of idol worship and the importance of monotheism. In conclusion, maxim violations in the story of Prophet Ibrahim reflect communicative wisdom in prophetic da'wah. This approach is relevant to modern da'wah contexts, as it shows that non-literal yet reflective and rhetorical communication strategies can enhance the effectiveness of Islamic preaching. This study offers a novel integration of pragmatic analysis and Qur’anic narrative interpretation, revealing how violations of the Cooperative Principle inform effective strategies for contemporary Islamic da'wah communication.

 • Maha Sourani + 4 more

Semiotics, as an analytical framework, is predicated on its foundation on examining signs within the fabric of social existence. Employing an inductive, descriptive, and analytical methodology, this study undertook the task of delineating the semiotic nuances inherent in Qur'anic verses related to the phenomenon of homosexuality and its associated references in the narrative of Lot and his community. The following semiotic features structured the analysis of this work: warning hāʾa/ in these /Hā'uulā'/, exemption manifested in /ạim̊rāảtuka/ (your wife) in addition to the signified and functional meanings of each of the following signifiers: Unidentified subject for the verb rush – verb to do, evil deeds vs. lewdness, /B/ Transitivity in /Biha/, standardized definite article /EL/ = the, and reason and sagacity. Data were compiled from specific Surahs within the Qur'an: Hud (11:78–81), An-Naml (27:54), Al-Ankabut (29:28–29,33), and Saba (34:13). The analysis focused on a spectrum of linguistic features in these verses, incorporating an examination of pronouns, linguistic variations, and syntactic structures. The findings substantiate the influential role of women in the propagation of homosexuality, thereby refuting assertions of its genetic or hereditary etiology. Instead, it elucidates the harmful impact of homosexuality on cognitive function, precipitating adverse consequences on mental well-being and engendering socio-interpersonal discord within partnerships. Ultimately, recommendations are put forward as a foundation for future research endeavors.

This paper delves into the Qur’an’s guidance on establishing justice among people of different faiths, presenting it as a universal standard rooted in compassion and moral responsibility. The Qur’anic narrative promotes fairness and goodwill beyond religious boundaries, encouraging equitable treatment of all humans. The life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ serves as a living model of these ideals. Core verses from Surahs Al-Mumtahanah, Al-Ma'idah, and Al-Baqarah are closely analyzed to highlight this framework. Instances such as the Treaty of Madinah, the support of the Abyssinian king, and the assistance of Mut’im ibn ‘Adi are discussed as practical illustrations. The paper further draws a comparative link with recent global academic responses, notably those from Oxford and Harvard universities, during the Gaza conflict. These institutions publicly supported the rights of the oppressed, reflecting a commitment to truth and justice. Their stance, though secular, resonates with the Qur’anic spirit of upholding fairness regardless of identity. The study ultimately reflects on how the Qur’anic approach to interfaith justice can inspire ethical discourse and global solidarity in modern times.

This study presents a psycho-phonetic analysis of the story of Solomon (peace be upon him) and the hoopoe, as narrated in the Holy Qur’an. It draws upon the field of psycholinguistics, which explores the connection between language and human emotions, and examines how sounds contribute to the expression of feelings and psychological connotations. The research aims to analyze the phonetic structure of the Qur’anic narrative in this particular episode by classifying consonant sounds, tracing their frequency and significance in context, and seeking to understand the psychological impact they produce in terms of meaning and emotional resonance. The study highlights how Qur’anic discourse employs sound as both an aesthetic and psychological tool to convey emotions such as anger, astonishment, affirmation, warning, mercy, and monotheism, along with other interwoven feelings masterfully expressed through a rich soundscape. The study further emphasizes the strong link between phonetic structure and psychological meaning, asserting that the Qur’an possesses unique linguistic features that render it exceptional in its psychological and spiritual impact. Understanding this effect requires a deep dive into the linguistic field from a psychological and contemplative perspective.

This study offers an interpretive, semantic, and educational analysis of the story of Moses and al-Khidr in Surah al-Kahf (verses 60–82). It focuses on the symbolic and geographical dimensions of place and its role in shaping the educational and epistemological experience of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). The research adopts an integrative approach that combines classical Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic mysticism, and theories of symbolic space in religious and philosophical thought. The story is analyzed as a sequence of transitional phases in a geographical space that goes beyond physical description, carrying spiritual and pedagogical implications. These stages include the symbolic starting point at the "junction of the two seas," the loss of the fish, the meeting with al-Khidr, and the three events (the scuttling of the ship, the killing of the boy, and the building of the wall). The research shows how Qur’anic geography transforms into a multi-layered semantic space, where each place represents a stage in Moses’ inner transformation, from acquired knowledge to divinely inspired knowledge, and from the logic of appearance to the insight of the unseen. The study reveals that the setting in this story is not merely a background for events, but rather an active educational element that contributes to shaping major concepts such as knowledge, submission, spiritual excellence (ihsan), and epistemic humility. The research concludes that Qur’anic pedagogy is deeply intertwined with its symbolic and emotional contexts and relies on them to form the ideal human being.

The Qur'anic narrative of the Companions of the Cave (Cave Sleepers, inArabic "Ashab al-Kahf") describes young believers who experienced a prolonged, divinely induced sleep in a cave, as recounted in verses 18:9-26 of Sūrah Al-Kahf. This account, while spiritual in nature, presents details that parallel modern scientific concepts in sleep physiology, particularly regarding environmental influences and bodily preservation during extended immobility. To explore scientific parallels between theQur'anic description of the Cave Sleepers' prolonged sleep and contemporary sleep physiology, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue. A comparative analytical descriptive approach was employed, incorporating historical context and established principles for the scientific interpretation of the Qur'an. A comprehensive literature review covered publications from 1970 to July 2024, focusing on sleep physiology, circadian rhythms, and relevant Qur'anic exegesis. The analysis revealed notable correspondences between the Qur'anic narrative and modern sleep science. The emphasis on noise reduction and controlled light exposure aligns with the current understanding of optimal sleep environments and circadian regulation. The narrative's mention of bodily preservation and periodic turning during sleep reflects modern practices to prevent complications from prolonged immobility, such as pressure ulcers and muscle atrophy. Additionally, the described cave environment mirrors conditions known to support hypometabolic states and sleep consolidation. The Qur'anic account of the Cave Sleepers resonates with contemporary sleep physiology, particularly in environmental optimization and bodily maintenance during extended sleep. This interdisciplinary exploration encourages new scientific questions and research directions in sleep biology and human physiology.
