Theoretical analysis of Barkhausen noise in carbon steels

This paper describes the theoretical analysis of Barkhausen noises initiated in two different microstructures of carbon steels, being consisted of ferrite grains with or without dispersed cementites. The Barkhausen noise is generally evaluated by its RMS value, which is the sum of induced voltage pulses caused by the magnetic flux change in each microregion. In this paper an induced voltage pulse is approximated by a gaussian pulse. The theoretical relationships between RMS values of Barkhausen noises and the microstructures of carbon steels are as follows, (RMS)=Cg.dg <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">1/2</sup> in ferrite grains and (RMS)=Cp.dp <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> in cementite-dispersed ferrite grains, where dg and dp are ferrite grain size and cementite particle diameter, respectively. Cg and Cp are constant.

Comparison of three residual-stress measurement methods on a mild steel bar

The objective of this investigation was to ascertain the surface residual-stress condition of a specially thermal-mechanically treated mild steel bar. Three methods of residual-stress measurement were used—two of them accurate, well-verified approaches and the third an experimental one. The first two were stress-relief blind-hole drilling (SRT) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the third was Barkhausen noise analysis (BNA).

A review of selected non-destructive methods for residual stress measurement

The roll of residual stresses in the failure of metallic components has long been recognized. However, the most commonly employed methods for its measurement are destructive or at least partially so. This has led to an active interest in non-destructive methods for residual stress measurement. This review describes the essence of the principles of a semi-destructive (hole drilling) and three non-destructive (X-ray diffraction, ultrasonic velocity, and Barkhausen noise analysis) residual stress measurement methods. The review also describes selected applications of these four methods to residual stress and related property measurements, as well as discussing their limitations and some sources of measurement errors. Conclusions as to the general applicability of the methods to practical residual stress measurements are drawn and a prognosis for the future development of each is offered.

Detection of plastic deformation during fatigue of mild steel by the measurement of Barkhausen noise

In order to determine the potential of Barkhausen noise measurement as an ndt method, the effect of plastic deformation on the true RMS value of Barkhausen noise has been studied in a fine-grained mild steel. Due to cyclic straining, distinct changes in noise levels, the degree depending on the strain amplitude, occur even below the fatigue limit, indicating plastic deformation. It seems that by detecting the amount and variation during cycling, Barkhausen noise analysis could be used as an ndt method to predict the fatigue life of real steel structures without knowing their load levels.

Residual Stresses in Gas Turbine Engine Components From Barkhausen Noise Analysis

Abstract The Barkhausen noise analysis method for nondestructive residual stress measurement in ferromagnetic steels is described. Photographs showing the influence of stress on magnetic domain walls are presented; qualitative and quantitative calibration results are summarized. Results of exploratory measurements on a variety of jet engine components: compressor blades, compressor disks, diffuser cases and ball bearings, are presented and discussed.
