Carbon Nanoparticle Oxidation by NO2and O2: Chemical Kinetics andReaction Pathways.

Carbon nanoparticle interactions with gases are central to many environmental and technical processes, but the underlying reaction kinetics and mechanisms are not well understood. Here, we investigate the oxidation and gasification of carbon nanoparticles by NO2and O2under combustion exhaust conditions. We build on a comprehensive experimental data set and use a kinetic multilayer model (KM-GAP-CARBON) to trace the uptake and release of gas molecules alongside the temporal evolution of particle size and surface composition. The experimental results are captured by a model mechanism that involves different types of carbon atoms (edge/plane-like) and the formation of a reactive oxygen intermediate (activated CO complex) as the rate-limiting step. A transition between distinct chemical regimes driven by NO2at lower temperatures and O2at higher temperatures is reflected by an increase in the observable activation energy from ~60 kJ/mol to ~130 kJ/mol. We derive energy profiles for three alternative reaction pathways that involve uni- or bimolecular decomposition of reactive oxygen intermediates.

Single and dual-atom catalysts towards electrosynthesis of ammonia and urea: a review.

Ammonia and urea represent two important chemicals that have contributed to the rapid development of humanity. However, their industrial production requires harsh conditions, consuming excessive energy and resulting in significant greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, there is growing interest in the electrocatalytic synthesis of ammonia and urea as it can be carried out under ambient conditions. Recently, atomic catalysts (ACs) have gained increased attention for their superior catalytic properties, being able to outperform their micro and nano counterparts. This review examines the advantages and disadvantages of ACs and summarises the advancement of ACs in the electrocatalytic synthesis of ammonia and urea. The focus is on two types of AC - single-atom catalysts (SACs) and diatom catalysts (DACs). SACs offer various advantages, including the 100% atom utilization that allows for low material mass loading, suppression of competitive reactions such as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and alternative reaction pathways allowing for efficient synthesis of ammonia and urea. DACs inherit these advantages, possessing further benefits of synergistic effects between the two catalytic centers at close proximity, particularly matching the NN bond for N2 reduction and boosting C-N coupling for urea synthesis. DACs also possess the ability to break the linear scaling relation of adsorption energy of reactants and intermediates, allowing for tuning of intermediate adsorption energies. Finally, possible future research directions using ACs are proposed.

Advances in Functional Organosulfur-Based Mediators for Regulating Performance of Lithium Metal Batteries.

Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are promising next-generation energy storage systems due to their high theoretical energy density. However, their practical applications are hindered by lithium dendrite growth and various intricate issues associated with the cathodes. These challenges can be mitigated by using organosulfur-based mediators (OSMs), which offer the advantages of abundance, tailorable structures, and unique functional adaptability. These features enable the rational design of targeted functionalities, enhance the interfacial stability of the lithium anode and cathode, and accelerate the redox kinetics of electrodes via alternative reaction pathways, thereby effectively improving the performance of LMBs. Unlike the extensively explored field of organosulfur cathode materials, OSMs have garnered little attention. This review systematically summarizes recent advancements in OSMs for various LMB systems, including lithium-sulfur, lithium-selenium, lithium-oxygen, lithium-intercalation cathode batteries, and other LMB systems. It briefly elucidates the operating principles of these LMB systems, the regulatory mechanisms of the corresponding OSMs, and the fundamentals of OSMs activity. Ultimately, strategic optimizations are proposed for designing novel OSMs, advanced mechanism investigation, expanded applications, and the development of safe battery systems, thereby providing directions to narrow the gap between rational modulation of organosulfur compounds and their practical implementation in batteries.

Direct methane utilization through benzene dehydroalkylation catalyzed by Co2+ sites in ZSM-5 intersections

Cobalt cations exchanged in ZSM-5 are active for the direct dehydromethylation of benzene with CH4. While toluene is the primary product, an alternate reaction pathway leads also to the formation of biphenyl and phenyltoluene. This not only diminishes the selectivity but also contributes to the deactivation of the catalyst. Temperature-programmed surface reactions show that benzene adsorbs strongly on the exchanged Co2+ cations, essentially blocking the sites for alkylation below 400 °C. At temperatures exceeding 400 °C, the partial desorption of benzene enables its reaction with CH4, leading to the formation of toluene. The formation of biphenyl is kinetically hindered, and its onset is only observed at temperatures above 450 °C. When CH4 is allowed to chemisorb on Co2+ sites prior to exposure to benzene, the formation of toluene is detected at temperatures below 400 °C. By infrared spectroscopy of benzene adsorption and UV–Vis spectroscopic characterization, we identified the existence of intersections in ZSM-5 where three H+ are in proximity. The ion exchange of a zeolite lattice Al3+ pair in such positions leads to the formation of a Co2+ site near a free Brønsted acid site. We observed a correlation between the concentration of this type of Co2+ sites and the catalytic activity of Co-ZSM-5 in benzene alkylation with CH4. This is further supported by the catalytic tests of Co-ZSM-5 materials with specifically a larger proportion of Co sites in sinusoidal channels, as a result of acidic conditions during ion exchange. Based on this, we propose that toluene formation takes place via heterolytic dissociation of CH4 on a Co2+ site at intersections followed by reaction with benzene strongly interacting with an adjacent BAS.

Redox mediator enabling fast reaction kinetics and high utilization of iodine in aqueous iodine redox flow battery

Aqueous iodine redox flow batteries (AIRFBs) have been identified as a promising technology for large-scale energy storage. However, practical capacity of AIRFBs is limited by the relatively low utilization of iodine caused by the low reaction kinetics. Here, we report an electrode modified by cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF), which supports a redox-mediating process developing alternative redox reaction pathways of iodine with reduced redox activation energies. Contributed by the strong adsorption of iodine by CoHCF, redox reaction kinetics of iodine species is accelerated, and the utilization of iodine in batteries is increased. Applying the CoHCF modified carbon felt as cathode electrode, the constructed zinc-iodine redox flow battery exhibits a high iodine utilization reaching 95.59% of the theoretical capacity at a current density of 20 mA cm−2, which enhances 139.89% comparing to the battery without electrode modification. The redox mediator-based electrode enabling fast reaction kinetics and high utilization of iodine species offers a promising strategy enhancing the battery performance thereby advancing the development of AIRFBs.

In Situ Ambient Pressure Photoelectron Spectroscopy Study of the Plasma-Surface Interaction on Metal Foils.

The plasma-surface interface has sparked interest due to its potential of creating alternative reaction pathways not available in typical gas-surface reactions. Currently, there are a limited number of in situ studies investigating the plasma-surface interface, restricting the development of its application. Here, we report the use of in situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in tandem with an optical spectrometer to characterize the hydrogen plasma's interaction with metal surfaces. Our results demonstrate the possibility to monitor changes on the metal foil surface in situ in a plasma environment. We observed an intermediate state from the metal oxide to an -OH species during the plasma environment, indicative of reactive hydrogen radicals at room temperature. Furthermore, the formation of metal-carbides in the hydrogen plasma environment was detected, a characteristic absent in gas and vacuum environments. These findings illustrate the significance of performing in situ investigations of the plasma-surface interface to better understand and utilize its ability to create reactive environments at low temperature.

Mechanism study of H2-plasma assisted Si3N4 layered etch

The cyclic two-step process, comprised of energetic H2 plasma followed by HF wet clean or in situ NF3 plasma, demonstrates Si3N4 layer-by-layer removal capability exceeding 10 nm per cycle, surpassing typical atomic layer etch methods by an order of magnitude. In this paper, we investigated the surface reaction mechanisms via first principle density functional theory simulations and surface analysis. The results unveiled that energetic H2 plasma, in the first step, selectively removes nitrogen (N) in preference to silicon (Si), generating ammonia (NHx) and transforming Si3N4 into SiON upon exposure to air, which becomes removable by HF wet clean in the second step. For the second step employing in situ NF3 plasma, it further leverages H-passivated surfaces to enhance NF3 dissociation and provide alternative reaction pathways to yield volatile byproducts such as SiHF3 and SiFx, thereby significantly improving nitride removal efficiency.

Oxidative hydrolysis of aliphatic bromoalkenes: scope study and reactivity insights.

We have developed an operationally simple method for the synthesis of dialkyl α-bromoketones from bromoalkenes by utilizing a hypervalent iodine-catalyzed oxidative hydrolysis reaction. This catalytic process provides both symmetrical and unsymmetrical dialkyl bromoketones with moderate yields across a broad range of bromoalkene substrates. Our studies also reveal the formation of Ritter-type side products by an alternative reaction pathway.

Pressure-Induced Amidine Formation via Side-Chain Polymerization in a Charge-Transfer Cocrystal.

Compression of small molecules can induce solid-state reactions that are difficult or impossible under conventional, solution-phase conditions. Of particular interest is the topochemical-like reaction of arenes to produce polymeric nanomaterials. However, high reaction onset pressures and poor selectivity remain significant challenges. Herein, the incorporation of electron-withdrawing and -donating groups into π-stacked arenes is proposed as a strategy to reduce reaction barriers to cycloaddition and onset pressures. Nevertheless, competing side-chain reactions between functional groups represent alternative viable pathways. For the case of a diaminobenzene:tetracyanobenzene cocrystal, amidine formation between amine and cyano groups occurs prior to cycloaddition with an onset pressure near 9 GPa, as determined using vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and first-principles calculations. This work demonstrates that reduced-barrier cycloaddition reactions are theoretically possible via strategic functionalization; however, the incorporation of pendant groups may enable alternative reaction pathways. Controlled reactions between pendant groups represent an additional strategy for producing unique polymeric nanomaterials.

Pseudo Four-Component Synthesis of 5,6-Dihydroindolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines.

An easy synthesis of novel highly functionalized 5,6-dihydroindolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines was developed via a pseudo four-component domino reaction of 1-aroyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolines, terminal α,β-ynones, and malononitrile. The selective formation of this biologically relevant heterocyclic core was achieved using a one-pot approach under microwave irradiation. The formation of the same skeleton through the reaction of 5,6-dihydropyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines with malonic acid dinitrile supports the proposed mechanism, involving the intermediate product of the three-component reaction. Furthermore, the disproval of an alternative reaction pathway, which involved the dimerization of malononitrile followed by three-component transformation, was demonstrated. Introducing the malononitrile dimer as a CH acid resulted in the formation of a different pyrido[3',4':4,5]pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline core. Additionally, the synthesized 5,6-dihydroindolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines were examined for their photophysical properties, revealing their attractive luminescent characteristics.

Modeling Interfacial Dynamics on Single Atom Electrocatalysts: Explicit Solvation and Potential Dependence.

ConspectusSingle atom electrocatalysts, with noble metal-free composition, maximal atom efficiency, and exceptional reactivity toward various energy and environmental applications, have become a research hot spot in the recent decade. Their simplicity and the isolated nature of the atomic structure of their active site have also made them an ideal model catalyst system for studying reaction mechanisms and activity trends. However, the state of the single atom active sites during electrochemical reactions may not be as simple as is usually assumed. To the contrary, the single atom electrocatalysts have been reported to be under greater influence from interfacial dynamics, with solvent and electrolyte ions perpetually interacting with the electrified active center under an applied electrode potential. These complexities render the activity trends and reaction mechanisms derived from simplistic models dubious.In this Account, with a few popular single atom electrocatalysis systems, we show how the change in electrochemical potential induces nontrivial variation in the free energy profile of elemental electrochemical reaction steps, demonstrate how the active centers with different electronic structure features can induce different solvation structures at the interface even for the same reaction intermediate of the simplest electrochemical reaction, and discuss the implication of the complexities on the kinetics and thermodynamics of the reaction system to better address the activity and selectivity trends. We also venture into more intriguing interfacial phenomena, such as alternative reaction pathways and intermediates that are favored and stabilized by solvation and polarization effects, long-range interfacial dynamics across the region far beyond the contact layer, and the dynamic activation or deactivation of single atom sites under operation conditions. We show the necessity of including realistic aspects (explicit solvent, electrolyte, and electrode potential) into the model to correctly capture the physics and chemistry at the electrochemical interface and to understand the reaction mechanisms and reactivity trends. We also demonstrate how the popular simplistic design principles fail and how they can be revised by including the kinetics and interfacial factors in the model. All of these rich dynamics and chemistry would remain hidden or overlooked otherwise. We believe that the complexity at an electrochemical interface is not a curse but a blessing in that it enables deeper understanding and finer control of the potential-dependent free energy landscape of electrochemical reactions, which opens up new dimensions for further design and optimization of single atom electrocatalysts and beyond. Limitations of current methods and challenges faced by the theoretical and experimental communities are discussed, along with the possible solutions awaiting development in the future.

DLPNO-CCSD(T) and DFT study of the acetate-assisted C-H activation of benzaldimine at [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2: the relevance of ligand exchange processes at ruthenium(II) complexes in polar protic media.

To gain mechanistic insights into the acetate-assisted cyclometallations of arylimines promoted by [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 in polar protic media, DFT geometry optimizations (with M06 and ωB97X-D3 functionals and the cc-pVDZ-PP[Ru] basis set) followed by DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS energy evaluations were performed using benzaldimine as a model substrate and methanol as the solvent (with CPCM or SMD models). The calculation results show that coordination of the imine to an acetate ruthenium precursor is followed by anion (chloride or acetate) dissociation as the rate-determining step of the process. H-Bonding of two explicit MeOH to the anion reduces the calculated activation energy to ca. 23 kcal mol-1, in good agreement with the experimental half-life at room temperature. Subsequent AMLA/CMD C-H activation of the intermediate cationic complexes is a faster, reversible process. Alternative reaction pathways involving neutral diacetate ruthenium complexes offer AMLA/CMD transition state structures of lower energy but are precluded due to higher energy barriers for the initial ligand exchange processes at ruthenium. Solvent assistance accelerates the final chloride/acetate exchange processes on the cycloruthenate intermediates, particularly when compression in the condensed phase is taken into consideration. The performance of six DFT functionals (with the aug-pVTZ-PP[Ru] basis set) was assessed using the DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS reference energies. Neutral diacetate ruthenium complexes were incorrectly predicted as being kinetically relevant when using hybrid DFT methods (PBE0-D3(BJ), M06-2X or ωB97M-V). Good agreement between the calculated barrier heights and our benchmark energy results was obtained by using double-hybrid DFT methods. PWPB95 with D3(BJ) or D4 dispersion energy corrections was found to be the most accurate (ΔG≠ MUE of ca. 1 kcal mol-1). This study may aid our understanding of and help with further experimental investigations of synthetically useful carboxylate-assisted C-H bond functionalizations involving (N,C)-cyclometallated (p-cymene)Ru(II) intermediate complexes in sustainable polar protic solvents.

Brønsted Acid-Catalyzed Synthesis of 4-Functionalized Tetrahydrocarbazol-1-ones from 1,4-Dicarbonylindole Derivatives.

A p-toluenesulfonic acid-catalyzed cascade reaction is reported for the synthesis of 4-functionalized tetrahydrocarbazolones via the reaction of 4-(indol-2-yl)-4-oxobutanal derivatives with a variety of nucleophiles in acetonitrile or hexafluoroisopropanol. After the initial intramolecular Friedel-Crafts hydroxyalkylation, the 3-indolylmethanol intermediate is subsequently activated and reacted with the external nucleophile. The reaction conditions are crucial to avoid alternative reaction pathways, allowing direct substitution reaction with thiols, (hetero)arenes, alkenes, or sulfinates. The procedure features high overall yields to access a diverse family of compounds bearing the tetrahydrocarbazole core.

Exploring the Mechanism of the Intramolecular Diels-Alder Reaction of (2E,4Z,6Z)-2(allyloxy)cycloocta-2,4,6-trien-1-one Using Bonding Evolution Theory.

In the present work, the bond breaking/forming events along the intramolecular Diels-Alder (IMDA) reaction of (2E,4Z,6Z)-2(allyloxy)cycloocta-2,4,6-trien-1-one have been revealed within bonding evolution theory (BET) at the density functional theory level, using the M05-2X functional with the cc-pVTZ basis set. Prior to achieving this task, the energy profiles and stationary points at the potential energy surface (PES) have been characterized. The analysis of the results finds that this rearrangement can proceed along three alternative reaction pathways (a-c). Paths a and b involve two steps, while path c is a one-step process. The first step in path b is kinetically favored, and leads to the formation of an intermediate step, Int-b. Further evolution from Int-b leads mainly to 3-b1. However, 2 is the thermodynamically preferred product and is obtained at high temperatures, in agreement with the experimental observations. Regarding the BET analysis along path b, the breaking/forming process is described by four structural stability domains (SSDs) during the first step, which can be summarized as follows: (1) the breaking of the C-O bond with the transfer of its population to the lone pair (V(O)), (2) the reorganization of the electron density with the creation of two V(C) basins, and (3) the formation of a new C-C single bond via the merger of the two previous V(C) basins. Finally, the conversion of Int-b (via TS2-b1) occurs via the reorganization of the electron density during the first stage (the creation of different pseudoradical centers on the carbon atoms as a result of the depopulation of the C-C double bond involved in the formation of new single bonds), while the last stage corresponds to the non-concerted formation of the two new C-C bonds via the disappearance of the population of the four pseudoradical centers formed in the previous stage. On the other hand, along path a, the first step displays three SSDs, associated with the depopulation of the V(C2,C3) and V(C6,C7) basins, the appearance of the new monosynaptic basins V(C2) and V(C7), and finally the merging of these new monosynaptic basins through the creation of the C2-C7 single bond. The second step is described by a series of five SSDs, that account for the reorganization of the electron density within Int-a via the creation of four pseudoradical centers on the C12, C13, C3 and C6 carbon atoms. The last two SSDs deal with the formation of two C-C bonds via the merging of the monosynaptic basins formed in the previous domains.

Staightforward Synthesis of Halopyridine Aldehydes via Diaminomethylation.

A novel two-step method for formylation of fluoropyridines with silylformamidine 1 under catalyst-free conditions was developed. A series of possible 18 fluoropyridines featuring one to four fluorine atoms were subjected to the reaction with 1 existing in equilibrium with its carbenic form 1'.12 Fluoropyridines were shown to react via C-H insertion. The reaction proceeded either at β- or γ-positions affording the corresponding aminals. The more fluorine atoms in pyridines, the easier the reaction proceeded. We also hypothesized that the pyridines in which the fluorine was substituted by other halogens would react in a similar manner. To test the hypothesis, a set of 3,5-disubstituted pyridines with various combination of halogen atoms was prepared. 3,5-Difluoropyridine was taken as a compound for comparison. All the pyridines in the series also reacted likewise. In most cases, hydrolysis of the aminals afforded the corresponding aldehydes. As DFT calculations indicate, the reaction mechanism includes deprotonation of pyridine by 1' as a strong base and the following rearrangement of the formed tight ionic pair to the final product. An alternative reaction pathway involving addition of 1' to the pyridine carbon with the following hydrogen transfer via a three-membered transition state structure required much higher activation energy.

Discovery of extended product structural space of the fungal dioxygenase AsqJ

The fungal dioxygenase AsqJ catalyses the conversion of benzo[1,4]diazepine-2,5-diones into quinolone antibiotics. A second, alternative reaction pathway leads to a different biomedically important product class, the quinazolinones. Within this work, we explore the catalytic promiscuity of AsqJ by screening its activity across a broad range of functionalized substrates made accessible by solid-/liquid-phase peptide synthetic routes. These systematic investigations map the substrate tolerance of AsqJ within its two established pathways, revealing significant promiscuity, especially in the quinolone pathway. Most importantly, two further reactivities leading to new AsqJ product classes are discovered, thus significantly expanding the structural space accessible by this biosynthetic enzyme. Switching AsqJ product selectivity is achieved by subtle structural changes on the substrate, revealing a remarkable substrate-controlled product selectivity in enzyme catalysis. Our work paves the way for the biocatalytic synthesis of diverse biomedically important heterocyclic structural frameworks.

Reductive Hydrogenation of Sulfido-Bridged Tantalum Alkyl Complexes: A Mechanistic Insight.

Hydrogenolysis of a series of alkyl sulfido-bridged tantalum(IV) dinuclear complexes [Ta(η5-C5Me5)R(μ-S)]2 [R = Me, nBu (1), Et, CH2SiMe3, C3H5, Ph, CH2Ph (2), p-MeC6H4CH2 (3)] has led quantitatively to the Ta(III) tetrametallic sulfide cluster [Ta(η5-C5Me5)(μ3-S)]4 (4) along with the corresponding alkane. Mechanistic information for the formation of the unique low-valent tetrametallic compound 4 was gathered by hydrogenation of the phenyl-substituted precursor [Ta(η5-C5Me5)Ph(μ-S)]2, which proceeds through a stepwise hydrogenation process, disclosing the formation of the intermediate tetranuclear hydride sulfide [Ta2(η5-C5Me5)2(H)Ph(μ-S)(μ3-S)]2 (5). Extending our studies toward tantalum alkyl precursors containing functional groups susceptible to hydrogenation, such as the allyl-and benzyl-substituted compounds [Ta(η5-C5Me5)(η3-C3H5)(μ-S)]2 and [Ta(η5-C5Me5)(CH2Ph)(μ-S)]2 (2), enables alternative reaction pathways en route to the formation of 4. In the former case, the dimetallic system undergoes selective hydrogenation of the unsaturated allyl moiety, forming the asymmetric complex [{Ta(η5-C5Me5)(η3-C3H5)}(μ-S)2{Ta(η5-C5Me5)(C3H7)}] (6) with only one propyl fragment. Species 2, in addition to the hydrogenation of one benzyl fragment and concomitant toluene release, also undergoes partial hydrogenation and dearomatization of the phenyl ring on the vicinal benzyl unity to give a η5-cyclohexadienyl complex [Ta2(η5-C5Me5)2(μ-CH2C6H6)(μ-S)2] (7). The mechanistic implications of the latter hydrogenation process are discussed by means of DFT calculations.

Synthesis of Nitrogen-Containing Heterocyclic Scaffolds through Sequential Reactions of Aminoalkynes with Carbonyls.

Sequential reactions of aminoalkynes represent a powerful tool to easily assembly biologically important polyfunctionalized nitrogen heterocyclic scaffolds. Metal catalysis often plays a key role in terms of selectivity, efficiency, atom economy, and green chemistry of these sequential approaches. This review examines the existing literature on the applications of reactions of aminoalkynes with carbonyls, which are emerging for their synthetic potential. Aspects concerning the features of the starting reagents, the catalytic systems, alternative reaction conditions, pathways and possible intermediates are provided.

On energetics of proton and electron transfer of selected phenol derivatives: Theoretical investigation of radical and oxonium cations

AbstractIn this paper, the systematic theoretical study of phenol and 36 compounds representing various ortho, meta and para‐substituted (R‐PhOH) phenols is presented. The hydroxyl group acidity is a characteristic feature of phenol which can be modified using substitution of phenyl ring. The proton‐coupled electron transfer was investigated for parent neutral phenols, R‐PhOH, their cation radicals, R‐PhOH+•, and oxonium cations, R‐PhOH2+. Density functional theory calculations were combined with solvent continuum model for water and dimethyl sulfoxide environment. For aqueous solution, the Pourbaix diagrams (electrochemical potential vs. pH) were constructed from the theoretically predicted acidity constants and electrochemical standard potentials. From the thermodynamic point of view, the obtained theoretical results allow the estimation of the thermodynamically preferred process and alternative reaction pathways of phenolic derivatives in very acidic media.
