Side-on Coordination in Molecular Alkaline Earth Metal Hypofluorites FM(η2-OF) (M = Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba).

Side-on coordinated molecular hypofluorites FM(η2-OF) (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) were prepared by co-deposition of laser-ablated alkaline earth metal atoms with diluted OF2 in cryogenic matrices. The structures parallel the non-VESPR structures of alkaline earth metal difluorides and dihydrides, such that FMg(η2-OF) is planar, FCa(η2-OF) is planar but with a shallow bending-potential curve, while FSr(η2-OF) and FBa(η2-OF) are non-planar. Bonding analyses show that the interactions between the metal center M2+ and the negatively charged ligands F- and OF- are mainly electrostatic. Moreover, for FMg(η2-OF), donation of electron density from OF- to empty s and p orbitals of magnesium is involved. However, for the heavier alkaline earth metal compounds, the donation to empty d orbitals of the metal center becomes dominant in orbital interactions, which contributes to their non-planar structures.

Features of using INSTEEL®modifiers. Industrial testing.

Producing metal with low non-metallic inclusion contamination remains a pressing challenge for metallurgical engineers. One key area for improving steel refining technology is selecting optimal compositions of refining alloys to enhance secondary metallurgy efficiency. This study presents results from using cored wire containing alkaline earth metals (Ca, Ba) at large-scale steelmaking plants. The research highlights the mechanism of non-metallic inclusion removal when using alkaline earth metal complexes compared to conventional calcium-based materials. Notably, the SiCaBa modifier demonstrated significantly improved calcium yield stability, enabling more reliable prediction of residual calcium content in molten steel. This helps prevent calcium overmodification and reduces risks of additional non-metallic inclusion formation. Industrial trials of INSTEEL® cored wire under various production conditions showed consistent trends: reduced non-metallic inclusion contamination; increased calcium yield efficiency (29.9% at Ural Steel JSC, 14.6% at KSP Steel LLP, and 23.5% at EVRAZ NTMK JSC); improved cleanliness ratings: at Ural Steel JSC (17G1SU grade): Brittle silicate max score decreased from 4.0 to 2.5; non-deformable silicates from 4.0 to 3.0; at EVRAZ NTMK JSC (OS grade). Non-deformable silicate contamination reduced from 2.75 to 2.47; 12.9% reduction in refining treatment costs. The findings demonstrate that complex alkaline earth metal alloys offer measurable advantages in secondary metallurgy processing compared to standard calcium treatments

Ultrahigh Storage Capacity of Alkali Metal Ions in Hexagonal Metal Borides with Orderly Multilayered Growth Mechanism

The global energy shortage and the gradual depletion of lithium resources have become increasingly prominent. Improving the energy density of lithium-based secondary batteries and developing other high-performance alkali-metal secondary batteries have become the research focus. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal metal borides (h-MBenes) are investigated as ordered alkali metal adsorption substrates for alkali-metal-based battery anode materials using density functional theory (DFT). Twelve thermodynamically stable h-MBenes are screened out from thirty-three structures, and their excellent stability and metallic electronic characteristics are confirmed. The ordered multilayered growth in alkali metal adsorption is found to depend on two factors: low lattice mismatching and dynamic matching of the work function. In particular, Mg/Al/V-based h-MBenes exhibit excellent lithium lattice matching (<3.35% mismatch), enabling layer-by-layer hexagonal (001) Li growth for ≥5 layers. They have ultrahigh lithium capacities (2170–3818 mAh·g−1), low migration barriers (0.01–0.05 eV), and low voltages (0.003–0.714 V). Mg/Y-based h-MBenes enable three Na layers’ adsorption with a capacity of 1717/605 mAh·g−1, and Al2B2 achieves a 472 mAh·g−1 potassium storage capacity, respectively. Due to the orderly multilayered growth mechanism, Mg/Al/V-based h-MBenes show great potential as high-safety and ultrahigh-capacity alkali-metal battery anode materials.

Hydrochemical Evaluation and Assessment Groundwater Quality through Water Quality Index Around Chandrapur Industrial Area, Maharashtra, India

Abstract: The present study focuses on assessing the current status of Groundwater quality for drinking purpose around Padoli MIDC of Chandrapur region. Stratigraphically, the area is comprising Archean granite and gneiss at base and overlain by Kamathi and Barakar sandstone of Gondwana group of rocks. For assessment of groundwater quality, total fifty-two (52) groundwater samples were collected from dug well and bore well during the post monsoon season 2022. The physico-chemical parameter like pH, EC, TDS, TA, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ , K+ , HCO3 - , SO4 2-, Cl- , NO3 - and F-were analysed and compared with the BIS 2012 standards. it shows that most of the well samples are within the allowable limit set by BIS, except TDS, TA, Ca and Mg. The dominance of cations and anions of the study region shows increasing abundance as Ca2+> Na+ > Mg2+> K+ and Cl- > HCO3 - >SO4 2-> NO3 respectively. Suitability of groundwater for drinking purpose is also evaluated on the basis of water quality index and hydrochemical characteristics through Piper and Gibbs plot. Based on water quality index, 64% of the well samples are favourable for drinking status. The hydrochemical facies of study area is of Mixed type and alkaline earth in nature. Gibbs diagram reveal that Evaporation is the major process for controlling the groundwater chemistry of the region.
