Influence of varying oral pH conditions on the material stability of thermoplastic orthodontic aligners: an in vitro study.
 • May 15, 2026
 • BMC oral health
 • Dhruv Ahuja + 8 more

Clear thermoplastic orthodontic aligners are widely used due to their aesthetic appeal and patient comfort; however, exposure to chemically diverse intraoral environments may compromise their physical, aesthetic, and chemical stability. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of acidic, alkaline, and neutral chemical environments on weight variation, pH interaction, colour stability, and leaching behaviour of thermoplastic orthodontic aligner materials. Thirty maxillary thermoplastic orthodontic aligners representing three commercial materials (Erkodur, Duran, and Zendura) were immersed in acidic (lime juice), alkaline (ENO® solution), or neutral (artificial saliva) media for 14 days at 37°C. Assessments were performed at Day 0, Day 7, and Day 14. Weight changes, pH variation, colour stability (ΔE, CIE Lab* using ImageJ and VITA Easyshade), and leaching behaviour (UV-Visible spectrophotometry) were analysed using repeated-measures and one-way ANOVA. Aligners in acidic media exhibited the greatest weight reduction (3.410 ± 0.015g to 3.358 ± 0.025g; p < 0.001), followed by alkaline media. Colour change was highest in acidic conditions (ΔE = 3.08 ± 0.15), moderate in alkaline (1.92 ± 0.12), and minimal in neutral media (0.77 ± 0.08). Leaching absorbance was significantly higher in acidic media at Day 14 (0.083 ± 0.004 AU; p < 0.001). Oral chemical exposures significantly compromise the physicochemical and aesthetic properties of thermoplastic aligners, highlighting the need for careful material selection, patient guidance, and further in vivo studies to confirm clinical impact.

In the modern apparel industry, there is a growing demand for sustainable and high-performance fabrics that combine aesthetic appeal with comfort and durability. Fibre blending has emerged as an effective strategy to enhance textile properties and develop versatile materials suitable for contemporary fashion applications. The present research aimed to develop and evaluate knitted garments from oak tasar/viscose (50:50) blends for sustainable western apparel, focusing on aesthetic appeal, mechanical performance, comfort, and color fastness. Consumer preferences, gathered from interviews with male and female college students from the university, favored column silhouettes, V-necklines, full-length dresses, notched collars, bell-bottom trousers, bust-length coats, and synthetic dyes. Twenty-five designs were shortlisted to five by a 10-expert panel, prototyped on a 34-inch dress form, and rated highly (4.6/5) for appearance by 45 respondents. The optimized blend exhibited superior mechanical properties, including bursting strength (~4.9 kg/cm²), drape coefficient (~35%), and abrasion resistance (>1500 cycles). Comfort metrics showed air permeability (~185 cm³/cm²/s), thermal insulation (~15), and stretch recovery (~29%), while color fastness (AATCC standards) showed excellent wash, light, and rubbing ratings for synthetics, compare to naturals. These results confirm the blend's performance and market viability, with future applications in scalable production of eco-friendly activewear, professional attire, and adaptive clothing lines leveraging its durability and comfort.

MRI Manifestations of Facial Paralysis Following Retroauricular Hyaluronic Acid Injection.
 • May 1, 2026
 • Aesthetic plastic surgery
 • Siwei Qu + 6 more

Retroauricular hyaluronic acid (HA) injection can enhance the cranio-auricular angle, thereby reducing perceived facial width and enhancing aesthetic appeal. Although this is generally a safe procedure, acute facial nerve paralysis is a rare but devastating complication. The aim of this study is to characterize the MRI features of acute facial paralysis following retroauricular HA injection, including manifestations of nerve injury and the distribution of the injected material, and to infer the potential etiology of the facial paralysis based on imaging findings. 15 patients presenting with acute complete unilateral facial paralysis following retroauricular HA filler injection between December 1, 2023, and August 10, 2025 were identified. No perceivable improvement was seen despite non-surgical interventions for 2 weeks. MRI using a 3.0-T scanner was conducted to acquire gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted and T2-weighted images. Each segment of the facial nerve was evaluated, and the diffusion range of the HA injection was observed by examining the contralateral side. MRI demonstrated significant enhancement of the facial nerve on the affected side compared to the unaffected side in the tympanic (P = 0.006), mastoid (P = 0.004), and parotid segments (P < 0.001) on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images. Additionally, the HA filler exhibited extensive diffusion (46.7 ± 12.2 mm horizontally, 53.1 ± 12.2 mm vertically) and infiltrating adjacent tissue spaces. This group of patients showed widespread distribution of HA beyond the injection site. Additionally, persistent facial nerve edema and enhancement were mainly localized to the tympanic segment and its distal end of the facial nerve, indicating a possible need for facial nerve decompression in this cohort. Integrating Green Retail into Urban Tourism Planning: Norm Activation Pathways and Ethical Consumption in an Urban Forest Destination
 • Apr 30, 2026
 • Tourism Planning & Development
 • Noppadol Manosuthi + 1 more

ABSTRACT Drawing on the Attitude-Behavior-Context (ABC) theory, this study investigates how green retail spaces activate ethical consumption among tourists in an urban forest destination. Integrating Generalized Structured Component Analysis with measurement error (GSCAM) and Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA), we test a model linking designable retail attributes to the Norm Activation Model (NAM). On-site surveys show that eco-friendly assortments, circular practices, education initiatives, and aesthetic appeal significantly strengthen attitudes, which, in turn, sequentially elevate NAM variables and ethical consumption behavior. NCA reveals that all nine retail attributes function as non-substitutable prerequisites for high attitudes. The findings extend ABC theory by operationalizing green retail environments as contexts, NAM as attitudes, and ethical tourism consumption as behavior. Destination managers should embed education initiatives, aesthetic experience cues, eco-friendly assortments, and circular practices as core retail standards, while ensuring the full set of green attributes meets baseline thresholds needed to unlock high attitudes and ethical purchasing.

 • Marina Wardaya + 1 more

The integration of local cultural values into visual design remains a challenge for many Indonesian creators, despite the growing global influence of comics, games, and animation. This gap highlights the need for structured educational resources that guide students in embedding cultural identity within contemporary visual narratives. The purpose of this study is to develop a local culture-based character design module that supports design education and creative industry practices. The method used in this study is the ADDIE instructional design model, which includes five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Data were collected through literature studies on cultural identity, visual semiotics, and mythology, complemented by in-depth interviews with local creators and design educators. The module was designed to balance aesthetic appeal with the representation of cultural values and symbolic meaning. The results of this study are a prototype module that integrates local cultural narratives and visual semiotic principles into character design processes. The prototype was validated through expert feedback and limited trials with design students, which demonstrated that the module is both pedagogically relevant and adaptable to diverse media contexts. The conclusion of this study is that the integration of cultural identity into design education through a structured module can enhance students’ creative sensitivity and cultural awareness, enabling them to create character designs that are not only visually appealing but also contextually meaningful and globally competitive.

The Effect of Value-Signaling Message Framing on Consumer Reactions: The Roles of Aesthetic Appeal and Status Consumption Orientation
 • Apr 21, 2026
 • Journal of Global Marketing
 • Andrea Sestino + 2 more

Value signaling has emerged as a crucial mechanism in shaping consumer evaluations, with prior research highlighting how scarcity-based cues convey exclusivity and enhance perceived value. In this vein, scarcity operates not merely as a supply constraint but as a symbolic signal that shapes consumers’ perceptions of exclusivity and desirability. By reinforcing identity-relevant meanings, scarcity enhances perceived brand value and strengthens consumers’ affective and behavioral responses. This paper advances a meaning-based perspective by examining how scarcity, framed in marketing communication, influences consumers’ willingness to buy luxury products through perceived aesthetic appeal. Across two experimental studies involving fictitious luxury collectibles and fashion products (Study 1, N = 139; Study 2, N = 169), findings show that high (vs. low) scarcity message framing increases purchase intention by enhancing perceived aesthetic appeal. However, such a mechanism is not uniform across consumers: Drawing on status consumption theory, the results demonstrate that the positive effect of aesthetic appeal on willingness to buy is significantly stronger among consumers with a high (vs. lower) status consumption orientation, while scarcity cues may even dampen purchase intentions among low-status-oriented consumers.

OfERF106-OfACS2 regulatory module helps accelerate the aging process of Osmanthus fragrans petals.
 • Apr 15, 2026
 • Plant cell reports
 • Heng Gu + 9 more

OfERF106 protein binds to the promoter region of the ethylene biosynthesis geneOfACS2and activates its expression, thereby accelerating the aging process of Osmanthus fragrans petals. Osmanthus fragrans is a multipurpose ornamental plant that combines landscaping utility, aesthetic appeal, and aromatic fragrance, granting it considerable economic and horticultural value. However, its value is substantially constrained by the short overall flowering period and the brief longevity of individual petals. The key regulatory genes, their functions, and the molecular mechanisms underlying petal senescence in O. fragrans remain largely unknown. Here, we identified a critical gene, OfERF106, from transcriptomic data. The expression level of OfERF106 peaked at the flower fading stage and was significantly higher than that observed during the primary and full blooming stages. The full-length sequence of OfERF106 contains a 675bp open reading frame encoding 225 amino acids. Subcellular localization analysis confirmed that OfERF106 protein is localized in the nucleus. Overexpression of OfERF106 in Arabidopsis thaliana resulted in a flowering period shortened by 3-4days compared to the control, indicating its role in promoting petal senescence. The functional validation of OfERF106 through rapid overexpression and silencing in O. fragrans petals further supported this result. Moreover, the expression levels of two ethylene biosynthesis-related genes (OfACS1 and OfACS2) were also significantly altered. Further analysis using yeast one-hybrid (Y1H) and dual luciferase (DLR) assays demonstrated that OfERF106 protein binds to the promoter of OfACS2 and activates its expression. These results suggest that OfERF106 accelerates petal senescence in O. fragrans by enhancing OfACS2 expression, which in turn promotes ethylene biosynthesis. Our study provides preliminary insights into the molecular mechanism regulating petal senescence in O. fragrans and highlights the functional role of OfERF106 in this process.

 • Althaf Muhammed + 5 more

Introduction Clear aligner therapy has gained popularity because of its esthetic appeal and patient-friendly nature. The impression-making process plays a crucial role in shaping a patient's experience and treatment acceptance. With the increasing use of digital technologies, it is important to evaluate whether digital impressions improve patient satisfaction compared with conventional techniques. The aim of this study was to compare patient satisfaction between digital and conventional impression techniques and to evaluate patient-reported comfort and fit of aligners fabricated using these methods. Materials and methods This prospective questionnaire-based study included 50 patients aged 13-30 years who required mild orthodontic correction. Each participant underwent both digital impressions using an intraoral scanner and conventional impressions using polyvinyl siloxane on separate occasions. Clear aligners were fabricated using both techniques, and patient satisfaction was assessed using a validated self-designed questionnaire. The evaluated parameters included comfort, breathing difficulty, gag reflex, anxiety, perceived duration, aligner fit, distortion, and ease of speech. Data were analyzed using non-parametric tests, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results Digital impression techniques demonstrated significantly higher patient satisfaction across all evaluated parameters, including comfort, pleasantness, breathing ease, absence of gag reflex, and overall experience (p = 0.001 for most comparisons). Patients also showed greater willingness for repetition with digital methods (p = 0.005). Digitally fabricated aligners were associated with significantly better tray comfort, fit, and reduced distortion (p = 0.001). However, no statistically significant difference was observed between digital and conventional techniques in terms of ease of speech (p = 0.062). Overall satisfaction scores were significantly higher for the digital workflow (p = 0.001). Conclusion Digital impression techniques significantly enhanced patient satisfaction and acceptance of clear aligner therapy. Improved comfort during impression-making and a better perceived aligner fit may contribute to increased compliance. Incorporating digital workflows into orthodontic practice can optimize patient-centered outcomes and improve the overall treatment experience.

From bathing standards to lived waterscapes: Why we need to rethink inland blue space quality.
 • Apr 13, 2026
 • Ambio
 • David M Oliver + 5 more

Currently, the main way that recreational blue space quality is monitored and communicated to potential users is through designated bathing water status, which is evaluated via microbiological standards and epidemiological evidence; however, our experiences of blue spaces extend beyond bathing and microbiology. Interactions across sensory and ecological dynamics are central to recreation in blue spaces where perceived cleanliness, aesthetic appeal, and multisensory richness influence patterns of use, enjoyment and wellbeing outcomes. We propose a need to reconceptualise what we mean by recreational water quality, to better reflect the diversity of 'qualities' associated with inland blue space and their influence on health-related outcomes. In this perspective, we outline why a reconceptualisation of recreational water quality classifications is needed, suggest what could be done to work towards a reconceptualised approach of classifying and communicating recreational inland water quality and consider which institutional mechanisms could support such a shift in approach.

QUANTUM-INSPIRED ALGORITHMS FOR ENHANCING CREATIVITY IN GENERATIVE DIGITAL ART MODELS
 • Apr 11, 2026
 • ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts
 • Mary Gladence L + 6 more

The current speed in generative artificial intelligence has brought major development to the creation of digital art, but the current models are in most cases incapable of producing true creativity because of their dependence on learned data distributions. This article introduces a new model, which includes quantum-inspired algorithms into the generative digital art models to foster creativity, diversity, and originality. Based on the ideas of superposition, probabilistic representation, and quantum-inspired optimization, the suggested solution refuses the latent space definition as a high-dimensional probabilistic landscape, which allows exploring various artistic options at the same time. The architecture has quantum-inspired encoding, annealing-like optimization and stochastic sampling sequences in traditional architectures of GANs and diffusion models. Test on experimental evaluation was done based on benchmark datasets such as WikiArt and large-scale art corpora. The suggested model was evaluated on the basis of not only quantitative measures like Fréchet Inception Distance (FID), Inception Score (IS), and a complex Creativity Index (CI), but also qualitative human evaluations. Findings prove that quantum-inspired model outcompares classical generative models in terms of lower FID scores, greater diversity, and much better novelty. User studies also conclude aesthetic appeal and originality of generated art works. The results suggest the prospect of quantum-inspired computation being a viable and realistic scalable method of further development of computational creativity. The research is valuable as it helps to develop a more expressive and innovative form of generative systems through the application of the ideas of quantum theory and artificial intelligence. In the future, it will be integrated with actual quantum hardware and multimodal creative uses.

Fabrication of tannic acid-metal ion complex-dyed oak veneer and elucidation of its weathering resistance mechanism
 • Apr 1, 2026
 • Industrial Crops and Products
 • Huachun Qi + 5 more

The color of wood is a critical factor in determining its aesthetic appeal and commercial value. However, extended exposure to light has been shown to induce a range of undesirable effects, including gloss loss, color deterioration, and an increase in surface roughness. These effects can limit the application of the material in high-end contexts. In order to develop an eco-friendly strategy for enhancing the photostability of dyed wood, this study fabricated Russian oak (Xylosma Racemosum) veneers colored with complexes formed between tannic acid (TA) and metal ions (Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Cu²⁺). The color fastness to water and ultraviolet (UV) light was comprehensively assessed. The dyed veneers demonstrated superior water resistance, exhibiting a negligible color difference (ΔE* < 2) after immersion. However, they showed inadequate UV light fastness, undergoing substantial color fading (ΔE* up to 4.10) after 288 h of aging. The characterization results indicated that the UV-induced fading was accompanied by severe surface roughening and micro-cracking (SEM observation). In addition, the degradation of lignin's aromatic structure and the formation of hydrophilic oxygenated groups were evident through FTIR analysis. The application of a 5% color-fixing agent (UV-1130) significantly enhanced the photostability, reducing the ΔE* value by 41%, 63%, and 53% for the TA-Fe²⁺, TA-Mn²⁺, and TA-Cu²⁺ systems, respectively. The microstructural analysis confirmed that the color-fixing agent contributed to preserving surface integrity following UV exposure. This work provides a viable and sustainable approach to achieving durable coloration for wood veneers by combining green TA-metal complex dyeing with an effective protective post-treatment. • Novel eco-friendly dyeing of oak veneer via tannic acid-metal complexation. • Color fastness to water and UV light of dyed veneer is systematically evaluated. • Analysis of wood interface coordination structures reveals color stabilization mechanisms. • Enhances weather resistance for exterior and architectural uses. • Achieves deep dyeing and protective treatment in one efficient process.
