Large fluxes of continental-shelf-borne dissolved organic carbon in the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea

Fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from continental shelves to the ocean may play a critical role in marine carbon cycling and budget. However, these fluxes have been poorly constrained because complicated biogeochemical reactions of riverine, atmospheric, and marine organic carbon occur in continental shelf-waters. We used multiple tracers of DOC such as stable- and radiocarbon isotope ratios of DOC, fluorescent properties of dissolved organic matter (FDOM), and 228Ra as a water age tracer to investigate the sources and fluxes of DOC in the northwest Pacific continental margin of the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea. Here, we show that there are significant additional (excess) supplies of DOC in the central Yellow Sea relative to the Changjiang (Yangtze River) source, based on these tracers. The marine δ13C signature (−21.1 ± 1.1‰) and the radiocarbon age (2000 ± 400 yr) of DOC suggest that the additional DOC (Δ14DOC = −44‰) is supplied from a combination of newly produced DOC and the degradation of particulate as well as sedimentary organic matter. The flux of this additional DOC produced in the continental shelf of the East China Sea to the open ocean is estimated to be ~1.9 ± 0.8 Tg C yr−1, which is comparable to that from the Changjiang discharge. Our study implies that the fluxes of continental shelf-borne DOC may be important globally and should be considered in estimating global DOC budgets in the marine environment.

The contribution of deadwood to soil carbon dynamics in contrasting temperate forest ecosystems

Deadwood forms a significant carbon pool in forest systems and is a potential source of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) input to soil, yet little is known about how deadwood effects forest soil carbon cycling. Deadwood DOC inputs to soil may be retained through sorption or may prime microbial decomposition of existing organic matter to produce additional DOC. To determine impacts of deadwood on soil C cycling, we analysed surface soil from beneath deadwood or leaf litter only, along chronosequences of stands of lowland oak and upland Sitka spruce. The concentration and quality (by optical indices) of water-extracted soil DOC (water-extractable organic carbon; WEOC), in situ decomposition ‘tea bag index’ (TBI) parameters and enzymatic potential assays (β-D-cellubiosidase, β-glucosidase, β-xylosidase, leucine aminopeptidase, phosphatase, phenol oxidase) were determined. Presence of deadwood significantly (p < 0.05) increased WEOC concentration (~ 1.5 to ~ 1.75 times) in the mineral oak soil but had no effect on WEOC in spruce soils, potentially because spruce deadwood DOC inputs were masked by a high background of WEOC (1168 mg kg−1 soil) and/or were not retained through mineral sorption in the highly organic (~ 90% SOM) soil. TBI and enzyme evidence suggested that deadwood-derived DOC did not impact existing forest carbon pools via microbial priming, possibly due to the more humified/aromatic quality of DOC produced (humification index of 0.75 and 0.65 for deadwood and leaf litter WEOC, respectively). Forest carbon budgets, particularly those for mineral soils, may underestimate the quantity of DOC if derived from soil monitoring that does not include a deadwood component.

How much carbon can be added to soil by sorption?

Quantifying the upper limit of stable soil carbon storage is essential for guiding policies to increase soil carbon storage. One pool of carbon considered particularly stable across climate zones and soil types is formed when dissolved organic carbon sorbs to minerals. We quantified, for the first time, the potential of mineral soils to sorb additional dissolved organic carbon (DOC) for six soil orders. We compiled 402 laboratory sorption experiments to estimate the additional DOC sorption potential, that is the potential of excess DOC sorption in addition to the existing background level already sorbed in each soil sample. We estimated this potential using gridded climate and soil geochemical variables within a machine learning model. We find that mid- and low-latitude soils and subsoils have a greater capacity to store DOC by sorption compared to high-latitude soils and topsoils. The global additional DOC sorption potential for six soil orders is estimated to be 107 pm 13 Pg C to 1 m depth. If this potential was realized, it would represent a 7% increase in the existing total carbon stock.

Trophic Strategies Influence Metal Bioaccumulation in Detritus-Based, Aquatic Food Webs.

Metal accumulation in aquatic food webs is mediated by physiochemical parameters of the environment and organismal traits. Trophic strategies influence an organisms' exposure to metal pollution, but links between trophic ecology and exposure to divalent metals are relatively understudied. While organically bound metals are typically considered unavailable for uptake, organisms directly consuming dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and bacteria-via the microbial loop-must also be consuming organically bound metals. Hence, we predicted animals feeding within the microbial loop would accumulate metals through their diet. To test this prediction, we exploited dietary differences between two organisms, Simulium vittatum, a filter-feeding black fly and Hyalella azteca, a shredding detritivore. We exposed both species to three treatments of DOC (labile, recalcitrant, and noadditional DOC) that were crossed with exposure to variable copper (Cu) concentrations (2-14 μg L-1) in laboratory microcosms. As predicted, H. azteca experienced a buffering effect by DOC. However, this pattern was not apparent for S. vittatum. Our results highlight the importance of considering trophic strategies when examining the impacts of metal pollution on aquatic communities, and demonstrate the potential for the microbial loop to facilitate metal uptake in freshwater food webs.

Forest harvest legacies control dissolved organic carbon export in small watersheds, western Oregon

This study examined physical and biological controls on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes from conifer-forest watersheds in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest of Oregon. We tested how DOC export was related to streamflow and legacies of wood on the forest floor three to five decades after harvest of old-growth forest in seven watersheds spanning the rain to snow elevation gradient. Three watersheds had old-growth forest and four had 30 to 50-year-old forest established after clearcutting of old-growth forest. Mean annual DOC flux in the watersheds was related to the biomass of forest floor wood, which was two or three times higher in watersheds with old-growth forest compared to young forest, and was inversely related to elevation, a measure of snowpack depth and duration. In contrast, fluxes of inorganic elements such as Si and Ca did not vary with harvest history or forest floor characteristics. Annual fluxes of DOC, Si, and Ca were linearly related to annual runoff, and annual volume-weighted concentrations of these ions declined by < 0.6% with several-fold increases in annual runoff. Across all years, DOC concentrations peaked before the peak of the hydrograph in all watersheds, which we interpret as representing movement, likely via preferential and surficial flow, of organic materials mineralized and solubilized during the long dry summers in this ecosystem. DOC concentrations relative to stream flow exhibited clockwise hysteresis loops in each water year, also suggesting that soluble DOC produced in the dry summer is exported in the fall. DOC concentration differences between reference and harvested watersheds also peaked in late summer or early fall, suggesting that the source of the additional DOC from reference watersheds came from coarse woody debris that remains moist during the dry summers and that was significantly greater in watersheds with elevated DOC. Taken together, our results suggest that forest floor wood is a previously unappreciated control on the supply of DOC that can be exported, and runoff is a secondary control on total DOC flux to streams. The legacy of forest harvest on DOC flux can be observed for decades, as total ecosystem carbon stocks, especially coarse woody debris, may require centuries to develop after old-growth forest harvest.

Ozone regeneration of granular activated carbon for trihalomethane control

Spatial and temporal variations of trihalomethanes (THMs) in distribution systems have challenged water treatment facilities to comply with disinfection byproduct rules. In this study, granular activated carbon (GAC) and modified GAC (i.e., Ag-GAC and TiO2-GAC) were used to treat chlorinated tap water containing CHCl3 (15–21μg/L), CHBrCl2 (13–16μg/L), CHBr2Cl (13–14μg/L), and CHBr3 (3μg/L). Following breakthrough of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), GAC were regenerated using conventional and novel methods. GAC regeneration efficiency was assessed by measuring adsorptive (DOC, UV absorbance at 254nm, and THMs) and physical (surface area and pore volume) properties. Thermal regeneration resulted in a brief period of additional DOC adsorption (bed volume, BV, ∼6000), while ozone regeneration was ineffective regardless of the GAC type. THM adsorption was restored by either method (e.g., BV for ≥80% breakthrough, CHBr3 ∼44,000>CHBr2Cl ∼35,000>CHBrCl2 ∼31,000>CHCl3 ∼7000). Cellular and attached adenosine triphosphate measurements illustrated the antimicrobial effects of Ag-GAC, which may have allowed for the extended THM adsorption compared to the other GAC types. The results illustrate that ozone regeneration may be a viable in-situ alternative for the adsorption of THMs during localized treatment in drinking water distribution systems.

Hydrologic controls on DOC, As and Pb export from a polluted peatland – the importance of heavy rain events, antecedent moisture conditions and hydrological connectivity

Abstract. Bogs can store large amounts of lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) from atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic emissions. Pb and As are exported along with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from these organic-rich systems, but it is not yet clear which hydrological (pre)conditions favor their export. This study combines a 1-year monitoring of precipitation, bog water level and pore water concentration changes with bog discharge and DOC, iron, As and Pb stream concentrations. From these data, annual DOC, As, and Pb exports were calculated. Concentrations ranged from 5 to 30 mg L−1 for DOC, 0.2 to 1.9 μg L−1 for As, and 1.3 to 12 μg L−1 for Pb, with highest concentrations in late summer. As and Pb concentrations significantly correlated with DOC concentrations. Fluxes depended strongly on discharge, as 40 % of As and 43 % of Pb were exported during 10 % of the time with the highest discharge, pointing out the over-proportional contribution of short-time, high-discharge events to annual As, Pb and DOC export. Exponential increase in element export from the bog is explained by connection of additional DOC, As and Pb pools in the acrotelm during water table rise, which is most pronounced after drought. Pb, As and DOC concentrations in pore water provide evidence of an increase in the soluble Pb pool as soon as the peat layer becomes hydrologically connected, while DOC and As peak concentrations in runoff lag behind in comparison to Pb. Our data indicate a distinct bog-specific discharge threshold of 8 L s−1, which is thought to depend mainly on the bogs size and drainage conditions. Above this threshold, element concentrations do not further increase and discharge becomes diluted. Combining pore water and discharge data shows that As and Pb exports are dependent on not only the amount of precipitation and discharge but also on the frequency and depth of water table fluctuations. Comparing the annual bog As and Pb export with element inventories indicates that As is much more mobilized than Pb, with annual fluxes accounting for 0.85 and 0.27 ‰ of total As and Pb inventory, respectively.

Microbial community composition and nitrogen availability influence DOC remineralization in the South Pacific Gyre

Many environmental factors are thought to control the bioavailability of marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) for marine microbes including its composition, the microbial community structure, and nutrient availability, yet which factors dominate at the ocean basin scale remains uncertain. Understanding the controls on DOM lability is an important goal given the role of DOM in the marine carbon cycle. We performed DOM lability experiments at two contrasting stations, one oligotrophic and one mesotrophic, in the eastern tropical South Pacific (ETSP) to investigate the controls on microbial remineralization of surface ocean DOM. Surface layer dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) were recalcitrant to remineralization over 9 to 14days when exposed to the microbial communities from the surface mixed layer, however exposure to microbial communities from the upper mesopelagic (twilight zone) allowed consumption of DOC but not DON. The DOC remineralization response differed between the mesotrophic site (~21μM consumed), likely experiencing allochthonous inputs of DOM from the adjacent eastern boundary upwelling system, versus the oligotrophic station (~3μM consumed) further offshore in the South Pacific gyre. DNA fingerprinting of the microbial communities across the ETSP with terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analyses revealed greater differences between microbial communities in surface vs. subsurface (e.g., 100m) waters at the same station than between surface water microbial communities separated by 1000s of kilometers. The subsurface microbial community at the mesotrophic station responsible for the greatest observed DOC remineralization, with a concomitant consumption of nitrate, consumed DOC to concentrations below that observed in situ (at 100m), suggesting a potential role for co-metabolism of relatively labile with more recalcitrant DOC or relief from micronutrient limitation, in driving the additional DOC consumption. DOC remineralization by the mesopelagic (200m) microbial community was much less at the oligotrophic station and similar to previously published results from the Sargasso Sea. Both microbial community composition and nutrient availability contribute to DOM persistence over weekly timescales in the surface mixed layer with varying degrees of DOC lability in the subsurface waters of the ETSP.

Distributions of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in the western Okhotsk Sea and their effluxes to the North Pacific

The Okhotsk Sea is considered the only ventilation source area for North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW), which is widely distributed in the low and middle latitudes of the North Pacific. Previous studies have confirmed high levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in NPIW, yet the amounts and the processes driving DOC export from the Okhotsk Sea are poorly understood. In this study, concentrations of DOC and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) were measured in the western Okhotsk Sea during the summer of 2006, and additional DOC measurements were made during the late spring of 2010. Results indicate that DOC transport to the intermediate waters (26.7–27.0 σθ) occurs through two processes. The first process involves the spread of water discharged from the continental shelf (Dense Shelf Water), which contributes to a DOC and turbidity maxima in the 250–300m layer of Okhotsk Sea Mode Water (OSMW) located off the eastern Sakhalin coast. The second process involves diapycnal mixing in the Kuril Basin and the Bussol’ Strait, where DOC is transported to a depth greater than 800m. The ratio of DOC:DON in OSMW was significantly higher in the Kuril Basin and Bussol’ Strait than off of the Sakhalin coast, which suggests that the transport of terrigenous organic matter from the bottom occurs in the former regions. DOC and DON efflux from the Okhotsk Sea to the intermediate layer in the North Pacific water (26.7–27.0 σθ) were estimated to be 68–72TgCyr−1 and 5.4TgNyr−1, respectively, for which the DOC transported by diapycnal mixing accounts for 37%. We conclude that diapycnal mixing in the Kuril Basin and Bussol’ Strait regions could play a significant role in regulating the quality and quantity of DOC exported to the intermediate water in the North Pacific.

Additional DOC samples were taken in several inshore−offshore transects along the Catalan coast. We found DOC concentrations of ~60 µmol C l−1 in winter, with increasing values through the summer and autumn and reaching 100 to 120 µmol C l−1 in November. There was high inter-annual variability in this summer DOC accumulation, with values of 36, 69 and 13 µmol C l−1 for 2006, 2007 and 2008, respectively. The analysis of the microbial food-web processes involved in the DOC balance did not reveal the causes of this accumulation, since the only occasion on which we observed net DOC production (0.3 ± 1 µmol C l−1 d−1 on average) was in 2007, and the negative DOC balance of 2006 and 2008 did not prevent DOC accumulating. The DOC accumulation episodes coincided with low rates of water renewal (average 0.037 ± 0.021 d−1 from May to October) compared with those of winter to early spring (average 0.11 ± 0.048 d−1 from November to April). Indeed, the amount of DOC accumulated each year was inversely correlated with the average summer rainfall. We hypothesize that decreased DOC turn-over due to photochemical or biological processes—mostly active during the summer—and low water renewal rate combine to determine seasonal DOC accumulation and influence its inter-annual variability. Longitudinal transformation of nitrogen and carbon in the hyporheic zone of an N-rich stream: A combined modelling and field study

A combined modelling and field study approach was used to examine biogeochemical functioning of the hyporheic zone in two gravel bars in an N-rich fourth-order stream (River Hers, south-west France). Surface water and interstitial water were sampled monthly (August 1994–January 1995), the latter in a network of 29 piezometers in the first gravel bar and 17 in the second. In both gravel bars, the hyporheic zone was created only by advected channel water without any connection with groundwater. Longitudinal chemical profiles of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC), nitrate (NO 3–N), ammonium (NH 4–N) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) were established for both gravel bars. Ambient and potential denitrification were measured in the laboratory during the same period using the acetylene inhibition technique. Factors limiting denitrification were also examined by testing the separate effects of nitrate or nitrate + carbon additions. A 1D reactive-transport model was used to simulate longitudinal transformation of nitrogen in the hyporheic zone, and to estimate the role of organic matter (DOC and POC) in the biogeochemical functioning of the hyporheic zone. Denitrification measurements with nitrate and nitrate + carbon additions both showed increased denitrification, suggesting that denitrification might not be C-limited at this site. Observations and model results showed the hyporheic zone to be a sink of DOC and nitrate, but DOC consumption appeared insufficient to explain nitrate depletion measured in the two gravel bars. Field data were better modelled when an additional DOC source from the POC fraction degraded by anaerobic respiration was included in the model.

Patterns of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen fluxes in deciduous and coniferous forests under historic high nitrogen deposition

Abstract. Numerous recent studies have indicated that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) play an important role in C and N cycling in natural ecosystems, and have shown that N deposition alters the concentrations and fluxes of dissolved organic substances and may increase leaching losses from forests. Our study was set up to accurately quantify concentrations and flux patterns of DOC, DON and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in deciduous and coniferous forest in Flanders, Belgium, under historical high nitrogen deposition. We measured DOC, DON and DIN concentrations at two weekly intervals in a silver birch (SB) stand, a corsican pine (CP) stand and a pine stand with higher N deposition (CPN), and used the SWAP model (calibrated with PEST) for generating accurate water and matter fluxes. The input with precipitation was an important source of DON, but not for DOC. Release of DOC from the forest floor was minimally affected by forest type, but higher N deposition (CPN stand) caused an 82% increase of DOC release from the forest floor. Adsorption to mineral soil material rich in iron and/or aluminum oxyhydroxides was suggested to be the most important process removing DOC from the soil solution, responsible for substantial retention (67–84%) of DOC entering the mineral soil profile with forest floor leachate. Generally, DON was less reactive (i.e. less removal from the soil solution) than DOC, resulting in decreasing DOC/DON ratios with soil depth. We found increased DOC retention in the mineral soil as a result of higher N deposition (84 kg ha−1 yr−1 additional DOC retention in CPN compared to CP). Overall DON leaching losses were 2.2, 3.3 and 5.0 kg N yr−1 for SB, CP and CPN, respectively, contributing between 9–28% to total dissolved N (TDN) leaching. The relative contribution to TDN leaching from DON loss from SB and CP was mainly determined by (large) differences in DIN leaching. The large TDN leaching losses are alarming, especially in the CPN stand that was N saturated.

Ozonation By-products and Determination of Extracellular Release in Freshwater Algae and Cyanobacteria

This work identifies the cyanobacterial and algal extracellular products (ECPs) and their derived byproducts during preozonation. Laboratory experiments were performed on two cyanobacterial species (Oscillatoria tenuisa and Microcystis aeruginosa) and one algal species (Chlorella sp.) dominating eutrophic reservoirs. Gas chromatography, coupled with high-resolution electron-impact mass spectrometry (GC/EI-MS), and high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC) was adopted. Over 20 compounds were detected in the mass spectra analyses of the cyanobacterial and algal extracts (including cells and filtrates). The main identified ECPs were classified as monosaccharides, fatty acids, hydrocarbons, and aldehydes. Odor-causing substances were also present in the cyanobacteria, such as trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol (geosmin) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB). The results from ozonated cyanobacteria and algae indicated that the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content of culture suspensions increased during ozonation. Most of the additional DOC is produced by the increased liberation of ECPs to the bulk phase. Several byproducts were present in the ozonated cyanobacterial and algal cultures: a total of 22 different organic compounds were detected—mostly aldehydes and phthalates.

Autopsy of high-pressure membranes to compare effectiveness of MF and UF pretreatment in water reclamation

A pilot-plant study was designed to compare the effectiveness of microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) as pretreatment for high-pressure membranes in reclamation of biologically treated wastewater effluent. Granular media, filtered secondary effluent from a full-scale wastewater treatment plant, was fed to MF and UF units that operated in parallel. Each of these filtrates served as the feedwater to two reverse osmosis (RO) units and one nanofiltration (NF) unit that operated in parallel. The decline in specific flux was substantially lower for high-pressure membranes receiving UF than MF pretreatment over the course of each of four pilot plant runs that lasted from 1 to 7 weeks. The removal of organic matter as measured by dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was somewhat higher by UF than MF pretreatment (about 15% by UF compared with 11% by MF). Addition of ferric chloride ahead of the UF unit, but not ahead of the MF unit, may account for this additional removal of organic matter. However, the additional DOC removal appeared insufficient to explain the differential in foulant accumulation between high-pressure membranes receiving UF and MF pretreatment. Extensive autopsy analyses of these high-pressure membranes showed from 35% to 56% less organic carbon on those receiving UF rather than MF pretreatment. A more specific indicator of a differential in organic fouling was the accumulation of polysaccharides and this showed from 27% to 38% less on UF- than on MF-pretreated membranes. Yet another possible source of foulants is inorganic material given that the inorganic and organic weight percentages were nearly equal (56% vs. 44%) on the membrane surface. One specific source was aluminum added for phosphorus removal. Less fouling of high-pressure membranes pretreated by UF than MF could be due to the following: (1) a small, but very important, colloidal fouling fraction may have passed through MF but was rejected by UF pretreatment; (2) organic fouling was not related to organics in either the MF or UF filtrates but rather to organics that are generated in situ by microbial activity on the membrane surface; and/or (3) less passage of colloidal Al–P that carried over from secondary wastewater treatment.

Flood pulse influences on terrestrial organic matter export from an agricultural watershed

Riverine export of terrestrial organic carbon (TOC) plays an important role in the global C cycle through influences on coastal productivity, sedimentary preservation, and CO2 efflux. In order to examine the influence of hydrologic variability and upland processes on TOC export from a midwestern agricultural watershed, we applied lignin phenol and stable carbon isotope analyses to assess quantity, source, and relative degradation state of TOC in soils, sediments, and size‐fractioned aquatic OC from stream water. Flood conditions exported 90 times more dissolved organic carbon (DOC) than baseflow owing to increases in both discharge and concentration, indicating mobilization of additional DOC pools. These observations are supported by increased TOC contributions to aquatic OC during flooding. Furthermore, stable carbon isotope values show that OC exported during flooding is enriched in C4‐derived C by up to 38% (for high molecular weight DOC) with respect to baseflow, indicating different TOC sources are mobilized dependant on hydrologic conditions. Lignin phenols isolated from the colloid size fraction show progressive increases in the ratio of carboxylic acid to aldehyde functional groups (a measure of relative degradation state) with distance downstream suggesting selective partitioning to mineral surfaces and/or degradation to this size fraction. This study shows that TOC quantity, source, and relative degradation state can change dependant on hydrologic conditions and in‐stream transport in a small agricultural watershed. Moreover, these results are important in showing variability in TOC source and chemistry exported from headwater systems that might otherwise not be detected in studies of larger rivers.

Detrital Controls on Soil Solution N and Dissolved Organic Matter in Soils: A Field Experiment

We established a long-term field study in an old growth coniferous forest at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, OR, USA, to address how detrital quality and quantity control soil organic matter accumulation and stabilization. The Detritus Input and Removal Treatments (DIRT) plots consist of treatments that double leaf litter, double woody debris inputs, exclude litter inputs, or remove root inputs via trenching. We measured changes in soil solution chemistry with depth, and conducted long-term incubations of bulk soils from different treat- ments in order to elucidate effects of detrital inputs on the relative amounts and lability of different soil C pools. In the field, the addition of woody debris increased dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in O-horizon leachate and at 30 cm, but not at 100 cm, compared to control plots, suggesting increased rates of DOC retention with added woody debris. DOC concentrations decreased through the soil profile in all plots to a greater degree than did dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), most likely due to preferential sorption of high C:N hydrophobic dissolved organic matter (DOM) in upper horizons; percent hydrophobic DOM decreased significantly with depth, and hydrophilic DOM had a much lower and less variable C:N ratio. Although laboratory extracts of different litter types showed differences in DOM chemistry, percent hydrophobic DOM did not differ among soil solutions from different detrital treatments in the field, suggesting that microbial processing of DOM leachate in the field consumed easily degradable components, thus equalizing leachate chemistry among treatments. Total dissolved N leaching from plots with intact roots was very low (0.17 g m 2 year 1 ), slightly less than measured deposition to this very unpolluted forest (0.2 g m 2 year 1 ). Total dissolved N losses showed significant increases in the two treatments without roots whereas concentrations of DOC decreased. In these plots, N losses were less than half of estimated plant uptake, suggesting that other mechanisms, such as increased microbial immobilization of N, accounted for retention of N in deep soils. In long-term laboratory incubations, soils from plots that had both above- and below-ground litter inputs excluded for 5 years showed a trend towards lower DOC loss rates, but not lower respiration rates. Soils from plots with added wood had similar respiration and DOC loss rates as control soils, suggesting that the additional DOC sorption observed in the field in these soils was stabilized in the soil and not readily lost upon incubation.

A comparison of river load estimation techniques: application to dissolved organic carbon

AbstractThe transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from land to ocean is a significant component of the global carbon cycle, and good estimates of the load transported in rivers are needed. Three load estimation techniques are investigated using field data from an upland catchment in Wales. The methods use approximately weekly concentration measurements with corresponding discharge measurement, supplemented by 15 min measurements of discharge. Annual load estimates are obtained for the years 1985–2000 with the following treatment of supplementary information: (i) exclusion using simple extrapolation; (ii) inclusion using the ratio method; (iii) inclusion using the rating curve method with a straight line fitted to the logarithms of load and discharge data. A variance estimate is given for the three load estimation methods. The influence of additional opportunistic DOC concentration measurements on load estimation is discussed and investigated. The importance of an unbiased sampling procedure for simple extrapolation is demonstrated, but the inclusion of opportunistic data from high discharge samples is shown to improve rating curve estimates of load, reducing their variance. The strong influence of parameter uncertainty in the load variance for the rating curve method is demonstrated, as well as the sensitivity of the method to model assumptions. Dynamics of extractable organic carbon in Spodosol forest floors

Transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the forest floor to the mineral soil in Spodosols affects many biogeochemical processes. The nature of the C reservoir in organic soil immediately before leaching, however, is not clear. Extractable organic C may partition between dissolved and undissolved phases, or reside in entrained water prior to leaching. We used laboratory incubations and extractions to test which model more accurately describes the reservoir from which DOC is removed. We also measured the rate at which C enters the extractable reservoir, how that rate changes with time, and the partitioning relationship between this reservoir and bulk solution. In addition, we tested whether the composition of extractable DOC changes with time. Extractable organic C was stored in an adsorbed phase. DOC in a solution of hydrophobic acids isolated from soil solution reduced dissolution of additional DOC by 41–44%. Furthermore, in each extraction, approximately 1 mg DOC remained in the unextracted phase for every 16–29 mg DOC 1 −1 in the aqueous phase. This partitioning relationship was not consistent with storage of DOC in entrained water alone. Soil produced 48 μg g −1 h −1 of DOC when extracted repeatedly at 1-h intervals, but only 1 μg g −1 h −1 when extracted at 1-week intervals. Extractable organic C production is fast (230 μg g −1 d −1) within 1 day of the last extraction, and then declines to a constant rate (15 μg g −1 d −1). Hydrophobic acids accounted for 75% of the extracted DOC after a 1-week incubation, but contributed only 50% of the increase in the extractable pool in subsequent weeks. Laboratory incubations and extractions of Oa material provided useful, consistent data for studying the dynamics of DOC removal from soil.

The Distribution and Stable Carbon Isotopic Composition of Dissolved Organic Carbon in Estuaries

The distributions of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the natural carbon isotope ratio of DOC (DO13C) in estuaries reflect the predominant sources and sinks of organic matter from both allochthonous and autochthonous origins. The traditional view is that DOC in land-margin ecosystems reflects mainly the mixing of land-derived and oceanic DOC. However, this view is not consistent with the bulk of our data from a survey of DOC and DO13C distributions in estuaries on the East and Gulf coasts of the USA. While it is accurate that the DOC in estuaries includes material derived from land and from the ocean, the distributions of DOC and DO13C in several estuaries reflect additional DOC inputs from estuarine phytoplankton and tidal marshes. Even when DOC concentrations were distributed conservatively, the isotopic composition of the DOC revealed the existence of a dynamic cycle of DOC input and removal in some systems.

Concentrations and radiocarbon signatures of dissolved organic matter in the Pacific Ocean

We present evidence suggesting that only a portion of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the seawater analyzed previously by Williams and Druffel (1987) was oxidized by the UV‐radiation method. High temperature catalytic (HTC) methods (Sugimura and Suzuki, 1988) used to reoxidize the central North Pacific gyre water samples reveal that the total DOC (DOCHTC) is about twice that of the UV‐oxidizable DOC (DOCuv). Indications from the original study suggest that this additional DOC contains higher concentrations of radiocarbon than in the DOCuv(Williams and Druffel, 1987). This evidence implies that DOC is older and thus more refractory with respect to biological utilization, yet is more chemically reactive with respect to photooxidation, than the fraction resistant to UV (DOCres).We report accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) Δ14C measurements of humic, fulvic and hydrophilic acid fractions isolated from water collected at 180 m in the North Pacific (19°N, 158°W) using XAD macroreticular resins. Δ14C values of the humic material are less than those of DOCuv from a similar depth 1200 km further north (Williams and Druffel, 1987) indicating that these humic substances are part of the ‘old’ recycled DOCuv in the ocean.
