Human-wildlife conflict (HWC) is intensifying globally under accelerating land-use change, climate variability, and wildlife population recovery. Compensation schemes remain a central policy response, yet their effectiveness in securing long-term coexistence remains contested. This review synthesizes evidence from 250 peer-reviewed and gray-literature sources across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe to evaluate compensation, mitigation, and coexistence instruments. Using a qualitative evaluative synthesis, we assess governance outcomes related to financial sustainability, administrative efficiency, equity, preventive integration, and social legitimacy. Evidence indicates that compensation improves short-term tolerance but rarely reduces conflict incidence when implemented in isolation. More durable coexistence emerges where compensation is embedded within governance systems integrating prevention, participatory institutions, and landscape-scale planning. We propose a multi-level coexistence governance framework that links financial instruments, institutional responsibility, and adaptive capacity under climate and land-use change, highlighting the need to move beyond reactive compensation toward equitable risk governance in shared landscapes.

Southern Africa faces worsening climate extremes, threatening food security particularly in Zimbabwe, where rain-fed agriculture dominates. Conventional models struggle under these pressures, yet agroecology, a resilient alternative, remains fragmented and weakly integrated into national policy. This review synthesizes evidence from 94 sources to examine agroecological practices, institutional arrangements, and socio-ecological outcomes in Zimbabwe, situating these findings within the broader Southern African Development Community context. Drawing on resilience and socio-ecological systems theories, the analysis demonstrates that agroecology enhances yield stability, promotes biodiversity, and strengthens household food security, frequently outperforming input-intensive systems under climate stress. Despite these advantages, scaling agroecology is hindered by policy gaps and limited public investment. Lessons from Malawi and Tanzania, however, illustrate viable pathways for national-level integration. This comprehensive synthesis provides a roadmap for mainstreaming agroecology, offering both practical insights for African food systems and theoretical contributions towards building adaptive capacity in the face of climate change.

This study examines the associations between perceived institutional change and service innovation in Taiwan's School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs), with particular attention to the mediating role of organizational professionalism. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 298 school nurses managing SBHCs across multiple educational levels. Using validated measures of institutional change, organizational professionalism, and service innovation, hierarchical regression analysis tested the hypothesized mediation model. Results indicate that institutional change is positively associated with both organizational professionalism (β=0.40, p<0.001) and service innovation (β=0.38, p<0.001), with moderate effect sizes. Furthermore, organizational professionalism demonstrates a substantial partial mediating effect, accounting for approximately 52% of the total effect, indicating that it is significantly associated with the relationship between institutional change and service innovation in SBHCs. Strengthening organizational professionalism through leadership, training, and resource alignment may enhance SBHCs' adaptive capacity and sustain innovation under conditions of institutional reform and resource constraint. This study integrates institutional theory, professionalism, and service innovation research to advance understanding of how meso-level professionalism functions as an internal mechanism linking systemic change to organizational innovation in hybrid healthcare-education settings.

Species facing environmental heterogeneity can persist either by adapting to local conditions or by dispersing to more suitable habitats. We evaluated how species' adaptive capacity, dispersal rate, and dispersal mode (passive versus fitness-dependent) interact to shape biodiversity in multitrophic metacommunities across thermally heterogeneous landscapes. Using simulations of a novel spatially explicit model in which species adjust their thermal optima, we found that biodiversity responded unimodally to both adaptation and dispersal, with diversity peaking at intermediate levels of each process. Greater environmental heterogeneity shifted diversity maxima toward higher adaptation rates, while fitness-dependent dispersal shifted them toward higher dispersal rates and partly buffered the homogenizing effects of movement on community composition. We also found that biodiversity in multitrophic systems was more responsive to adaptation than in competitive communities. Together, these results show that the maintenance of biodiversity in heterogeneous landscapes depends not only on how fast species move or adapt, but also on how dispersal decisions are made. Our study calls for a stronger integration of evolutionary and behavioral processes into metacommunity theory.

A robust food production system serves as the cornerstone for ensuring food security. Integrating the conceptual connotations of food production resilience, this study constructs a multi-dimensional evaluation index system encompassing resistance, recovery, and adaptive capacity. Utilizing panel data from Xinjiang spanning 2010 to 2022, the research employs an integrated methodology-including the entropy weight method, a modified gravity model, Social Network Analysis (SNA), and the XGBoost-SHAP model-to systematically analyze the resilience levels, structural network characteristics, and underlying driving mechanisms of food production in the region.The findings indicate that: From 2010 to 2022, the resilience level of food production in Xinjiang exhibited a continuous growth trend, characterized by spatial heterogeneity with a relatively narrow gap. During the study period, the network connectivity of food production resilience in Xinjiang became increasingly tight; however, it was characterized by a low network density along with a topology of high clustering and a short average path. Asymmetric features were observed between input and output regions, accompanied by a decrease in the number of spillovers across blocks. Per capita cultivated land area (X5), traffic accessibility (X15), agricultural technological progress (X12), and average annual temperature (X1) ranked as the top four influential factors, among which the interaction effect between per capita cultivated land area (X5) and traffic accessibility (X15) was the most significant. These research insights can provide valuable references for safeguarding national food security.

Past studies have presented different findings regarding how the impact of Arctic sea ice melt on Eurasia's winter cold extremes (WCE) is changing, with some suggesting a strengthening effect while others indicate a weakening influence. In this study, we demonstrate that interannual variability of Arctic sea ice is closely linked to climatological mean sea ice concentration (SIC). In low ice regimes (mean SIC <0.2), interannual variability declines with sea ice loss, resulting in a weakened Rossby wave response and consequently a reduced impact on WCE in mid-high latitudes. In contrast, high ice regimes (mean SIC >0.8) exhibit increased interannual variability with sea ice loss, extending its influence on WCE into mid-latitudes in Asia through amplifying Rossby waves. As Arctic sea ice loss progresses from the southern edge of the low ice regime to the interior of the high ice regime, WCE in mid-latitude Asia increase. These insights are critical for improving seasonal predictions of Eurasian WCE and enhancing adaptive capacity to cope with extreme weather events. • Arctic sea ice melt lowers edge variability but increases it near the interior. • Marginal ice's impact on Eurasian cold extremes weakens as interior impact grows. • Poleward Arctic ice melt could intensify winter cold extremes in mid-latitude Asia.

Climate change, characterized by the increasing frequency and intensity of hydrometeorological disasters, has become a serious threat to the agricultural sector and food security in Indonesia. Pandeglang Regency, particularly Mandalawangi Village, is one of the areas significantly impacted by floods and extreme weather, disrupting food productivity and the socio-economic conditions of the community. This study aims to analyze the implications of climate change on food productivity and identify community adaptation strategies for maintaining livelihoods amidst increasing disaster risk. The study employed qualitative methods with a single instrumental case study approach. Data were obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using data reduction techniques, data presentation, and conclusion drawing using source triangulation. The results indicate that climate change triggers increased extreme rainfall, leading to flooding, agricultural land damage, disruption of the planting calendar, increased pest infestation, and decreased rice productivity. Nevertheless, food availability in Mandalawangi Village can still be maintained through commodity diversification, utilization of upland rice, distribution of superior seeds, development of irrigation infrastructure, and various forms of government transfers. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening farmers' adaptive capacity and agricultural policies responsive to climate change to maintain sustainable food production and the well-being of rural communities.

Background The Mediterranean Sea is warming approximately 20% faster than the global average, underscoring the urgent need for adaptive aquaculture strategies, including the evaluation of novel feed formulations under environmentally relevant conditions. To address this objective, the present study assessed the performance of gilthead sea bream during the unusually warm summers recently recorded in the Western Mediterranean, where temperatures have increased by approximately 0.1 °C per year over the past decade. The rising temperatures between 2020 and 2025 were associated with progressively shorter production cycles, particularly in the 2022 cohort, where growth rates increased by approximately 10-15%. Methods In this cohort, we conducted a ten−month trial (May 2022–February 2023) to evaluate juvenile performance using a plant−based diet representative of current commercial formulations, along with two experimental diets in which fishmeal and fish oil were partially replaced by either processed animal proteins and salmon oil by−products (PAP diet) or a combination of insect proteins, microbial biomass, and algal oil (ALT diet). Results Growth performance remained largely comparable across dietary treatments, and histological analyses of liver and anterior/posterior intestine at three sampling points (July, November, February) revealed no tissue alterations, indicating preserved organ integrity throughout the trial. Despite similar growth outcomes, fish relied on distinct physiological strategies to sustain performance. The ALT diet was associated with reduced basal stress−axis activity, more proactive behavioral responses following confinement, and enhanced intestinal transcriptional activity, suggesting improved physiological responses to aquaculture stressors. Conversely, the PAP diet was associated with a down-regulation of liver and white muscle transcriptomes, which may indicate a potential trade−off that could affect cold−adaptation capacity. Conclusion Overall, these findings suggest that alternative and low−trophic feed ingredients following circular economy principles can sustain growth and tissue health even under atypically warm conditions, while also modulating stress physiology in ways that may enhance robustness in a rapidly warming Mediterranean. By identifying diet−specific physiological signatures, this study provides actionable insights for the design of aquafeeds better adapted to warming conditions, supporting the transition toward more sustainable and adaptive aquaculture systems, particularly in the Mediterranean region, where accelerating warming demands rapid innovation to maintain productivity, animal welfare, and long-term sector sustainability.

Climate change has caused significant impacts on coastal areas, particularly in the form of tidal flooding, coastal abrasion, and environmental degradation, which in turn affect food and nutrition security as well as the socio-economic conditions of local communities. This community service activity aimed to strengthen food and nutrition security while enhancing the adaptive capacity of coastal communities to climate change through the sustainable utilization of mangrove ecosystems by implementing mangrove honey bee cultivation in Tugu District, Semarang City. The program employed a participatory community-based approach that included socialization activities, a one-day technical training on mangrove honey bee cultivation, the establishment of a community business group, and the assessment of participants’ knowledge improvement using pretest and posttest methods. The results indicated an increase in participants’ knowledge following the training, accompanied by improved community awareness regarding the importance of mangrove conservation and the economic potential of mangrove honey as a nutritious food source. Furthermore, the program successfully facilitated the formation of a mangrove honey bee management group oriented toward sustainable business development. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that mangrove honey bee cultivation has strong potential as an effective climate change adaptation strategy to support food and nutrition security as well as the economic resilience of coastal communities. The recommendations emphasize the need for continuous mentoring, strengthening of community business institutions, and the integration of mangrove conservation programs with local economic development to support the implementation of nature-based community service models in coastal areas.

In the context of global digital transformation, open science, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), cyberspace has emerged as both a catalyst for knowledge innovation and a breeding ground for digital social threats, including misinformation, cyberbullying, online fraud, data privacy violations, and other forms of online social deviance. These challenges have imposed increasing responsibilities on higher education institutions, particularly private universities, to reposition their roles in fostering safe, ethical, and sustainable digital academic ecosystems. This study examines the strategic role of private universities in combating cyber-social deviance through interdisciplinary approaches encompassing digital university governance, open science, digital citizenship education, and knowledge security. The research employs a qualitative methodology integrating policy analysis, international literature review, and comparative approaches to explore governance models, educational mechanisms, and adaptive capacities of private higher education institutions in the era of global digital transformation. The findings indicate that private universities possess significant potential to act as pioneering institutions in promoting digital ethics, strengthening cyber-risk awareness, advancing safe academic cultures, and cultivating responsible digital learning environments. Furthermore, the study proposes an integrated governance framework that combines AI, open science, and digital citizenship education to enhance the effectiveness of cyber-social threat prevention in higher education. The study contributes theoretically and practically by extending scholarly discourse on digital universities, digital social security, and the social responsibility of higher education institutions within the global knowledge society.

This article investigates the evolving role of rural women in Moroccan oases, focusing on how environmental change, particularly water scarcity, impacts their position within the social contract. Employing a conceptual framework that combines social contract theory with environmental justice perspectives, the study examines women’s access to protection, provision, participation, and recognition. Field research in the Drâa-Tafilalt region reveals that while women face structural marginalization and vulnerability, they are also active agents of change. The rise of women’s cooperatives, often centred around agricultural products but expanding to empowering developmental activities, demonstrates their capacity for innovation and adaptation. However, water scarcity threatens present achievements. The study highlights the interconnectedness of environmental degradation, gender relations, and state-society dynamics, emphasizing the need for policies that recognize gender-specific needs and contributions in the context of climate change.
