J Strength Cond Res 40(7): 822-842, 2026-Blood flow restriction (BFR) improves muscle strength and size gains after low-load resistance training, though findings are conflicting for BFR with higher loads (≥60% of maximal strength). This systematic review with meta-analysis investigated whether high-load resistance training with BFR (a) further improves muscle size and strength and (b) increases acute performance, physiologic, and perceptual responses, when compared with conventional high-load resistance training. Six databases were searched to identify studies examining high-load resistance training with BFR in healthy adults. Risk of bias was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute appraisal tools. A multilevel meta-analysis using the inverse-variance weighted random effects model was conducted on muscle strength and size outcomes. Acute data were synthesized narratively. Eight chronic studies and 34 acute studies were included. Very-low certainty evidence indicates that high-load resistance training with BFR does not further improve muscle strength ( g = 0.11 [95% confidence intervals -0.11 to 0.33]) or size ( g = 0.08 [95% confidence intervals -0.18 to 0.34]) adaptations compared with conventional high-load resistance training. Acutely, high-load resistance exercise with BFR may increase concentric bar velocity without altering electromyography amplitude, cardiorespiratory, metabolic, and molecular responses. Findings regarding perceptual responses and the number of repetitions completed during high-load resistance exercise with BFR are conflicting. Current evidence suggests that adding BFR to high-load resistance training is not beneficial for enhancing muscle size and strength, likely because of comparable physiologic demands. However, the application of wide cuffs at high pressures may acutely increase concentric bar velocity that could be explored as a potential method for improving muscular power.

BackgroundArterial stiffness and endothelial dysfunction are early markers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. While moderate-intensity aerobic exercise has demonstrated vascular benefits in untrained individuals, its acute effects on strength-trained athletes remain unclear.ObjectiveThis study investigates the impact of a single aerobic session on arterial stiffness and endothelial function in strength-trained throwers and untrained controls.MethodsEleven male university throwers and eleven healthy controls participated. Participants completed 30 min of moderate-intensity cycling at 50% of heart rate reserve. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and reactive hyperemia-peripheral arterial tonometry index (RHI) were measured at baseline, immediately after exercise, and 40 min post-exercise.ResultsArterial stiffness decreased significantly in the controls (p = 0.003) but showed no change in the throwers. Endothelial function, as measured by RHI, improved significantly in both groups post-exercise (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in RHI improvement between groups.ConclusionsIn the throwers group, a single session of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise did not lead to a significant reduction in arterial stiffness but resulted in an improvement in endothelial function. These findings suggest that while endothelial function in strength-trained throwers can benefit acutely from aerobic exercise, their arterial stiffness may require more intensive or longer-duration aerobic interventions to achieve significant improvements.

Chromium in its hexavalent form (Cr6+) is highly toxic and widely recognized for its persistence and bioaccumulative potential in aquatic ecosystems. Despite extensive reports on chromium toxicity, information on its integrated physiological, biochemical and enzymatic impacts on widely cultured fishes remains limited. The present study evaluated both acute and sublethal effects of chromium on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), an ecologically and commercially important fish species. The results of the acute toxicity testing revealed a 96-h LC50 value of 49.40 mg L-1. During the 30-day sublethal trial, significant (p < 0.05) alterations in haematological parameters were recorded, including 28%-40% reductions in RBC, haemoglobin and haematocrit, along with an increase in WBC, indicating anaemia and stress-induced immune activation. Serum biochemical results showed a 40%-45% rise in glucose levels and a significant decline in total protein and albumin (p < 0.05), reflecting metabolic stress and impaired liver function. Digestive enzyme activities were inhibited, with protease, amylase and lipase decreasing by 10%-35%, suggesting impaired nutrient digestion and assimilation. Physiological indices, including HSI and GaSI, decreased by over 50%, whereas specific growth rate (SGR) indicated negative values, demonstrating suppressed growth and reduced energy utilization. Collectively, these findings provided mechanistic evidence that chromium toxicity induces haematological alterations, leading to impaired oxygen transport, metabolic imbalance and reduced digestive efficiency in O. niloticus. These results also highlighted the ecological risk of chromium contamination in freshwater systems and emphasize the need for stricter regulation of metal discharge to safeguard aquatic biodiversity and aquaculture productivity.

The integrated "rice-aquaculture" farming system is increasingly promoted in China as a sustainable agricultural model offering "dual benefits of grain and aquaculture". However, the safety of pesticides to co-cultured aquatic species, such as the red claw crayfish ( Cherax quadricarinatus ), requires thorough investigation. This study assessed the acute and chronic toxicological effects of six widely used chemical pesticides in paddy fields—abamectin, trifloxystrobin, triflumezopyrim, glufosinate-ammonium, zinc thiazole, and pretilachlor—on C. quadricarinatus under laboratory conditions. Acute toxicity tests revealed that abamectin and trifloxystrobin were highly toxic to C. quadricarinatus . Pretilachlor exhibited moderate toxicity. In contrast, triflumezopyrim, glufosinate-ammonium, and zinc thiazole demonstrated low acute toxicity. Subsequent chronic toxicity assessments (7-day exposure followed by a 14-day recovery) indicated that sub-lethal concentrations of triflumezopyrim, glufosinate-ammonium, and zinc thiazole induced neurotoxicity in C. quadricarinatus . Additionally, triflumezopyrim exposure led to oxidative stress, as evidenced by altered antioxidant enzyme activities and increased lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. Most notably, these sub-lethal effects-including significant changes in growth parameters (SGR, HSI), neurotoxicity (AChE inhibition), oxidative stress (SOD, CAT, MDA), and genotoxicity (8-OHdG) were largely reversible, consistently returning to control levels after a 14-day recovery in clean water. This demonstrated resilience provides a strong scientific basis for the periodic and safe application of these low-toxicity agents in integrated rice-crayfish system, while the highly toxic abamectin, trifloxystrobin, and moderate toxic pretilachlor pose significant risks and their use should be limited. This research provides a scientific basis for pesticide selection to support the sustainable development of integrated rice-red claw crayfish farming systems, contributing to the protection of aquatic ecosystems while ensuring the economic benefits of agricultural production. • Toxicities of six widely used chemical pesticides on Cherax quadricarinatus were assessed under laboratory conditions. • Triflumezopyrim, glufosinate-ammonium, and zinc thiazole show relative safety for rice-crayfish systems. • Abamectin, trifloxystrobin, and pretilachlor pose significant risks and their use should be limited in rice-crayfish systems.

This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) on markers of skeletal muscle damage, renal function, and metabolic stress in sedentary adults. Given increasing reports of severe muscle damage after a single WB-EMS session, this study examined the time course and magnitude of biochemical and urinary responses after such an event. Twenty-six participants were randomly assigned to a WB-EMS group or a control (exercise-only) group. While both groups completed the same physical exercise protocol, only the WB-EMS group received low-frequency electrical stimulation (40-50 Hz). Venous blood and urine samples were collected at baseline and at 24, 48, and 72 h postexercise. Key biomarkers were measured: creatine kinase, myoglobin, alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, urinary cystatin C, and urinary potassium. Ratings of perceived exertion were also recorded. Despite low perceived exertion (<13), WB-EMS induced statistically significant elevations in serum creatine kinase and myoglobin, peaking at 72 h (1784 U·L -1 and 180.6 ng·mL -1 , respectively), indicating pronounced biochemical skeletal muscle stress. No such changes were observed in the control group. Hepatic enzymes remained within clinical reference ranges, while urinary cystatin C and potassium did not indicate acute kidney impairment. A single WB-EMS session can elicit marked skeletal muscle damage in previously untrained individuals, even when perceived exertion is low. Although no acute renal dysfunction was observed and the present findings do not indicate a clinical diagnosis of exertional rhabdomyolysis, the magnitude of the biomarker response underscores the physiological strain imposed by initial WB-EMS exposure. Collectively, these findings highlight the importance of careful progression and individualized load management when implementing WB-EMS protocols, particularly in EMS-naive populations.
