Study on the dyeing properties of hemicyanine dyes. I. Acrylic fabrics

Three hemicyanine dyes were employed in dyeing acrylic fabrics following traditional cationic dyeing procedures. The influence of the substituting groups of the dye molecule on the sorption rate and sorption isotherms was analyzed. The results showed that those dyed acrylic fabrics using hemicyanine dyes had obvious fluorescent effect in the spectra range 550–750 nm. In addition, according to the EN-471 standard (2003), the chromaticity of dyed acrylic fabric was calculated to evaluate whether hemicyanine dye could meet the requirements of the fluorescent dye for high visibility warning clothing.

Kinetic and thermodynamic analysis study of the dyeing process of acrylic fabrics with basic dyes in presence of organic solvents

Kinetic and thermodynamic analysis of the dyeing process of acrylic fibers (Orlon) with basic dyes in the presence of small amounts of the solvents benzyl alcohol, butanol and 1-4 Dioxane are described in the present work. The dyeing affinity was measured using Gilbert and Rideal?s equation. Results show a close affinity on dye structure. The effect of increasing the dyeing temperatures from 80 to 95 oC as well as increasing the dyeing time over a range from 10 minutes to180 minutes was studied. Changes of enthalpy and entropy related to the process of absorption are calculated. The best thermodynamic conditions for dye uptake by acrylic fibers appear at the highest temperatures, when the standard free energy of absorption takes the most positive values. The mechanism of dye interaction with the fiber has been briefly considered. From the results, we find that the absorption of dye by acrylic fibers in the temperature interval investigated takes place with establishment of chemical bonds, although physical contributions of electrostatic nature between both the dye and the available sites in the fiber.

Application of prepared waterborne polyurethane extended with chitosan to impart antibacterial properties to acrylic fabrics

In this study, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 2,2-bis (hydroxylmethyl)-propionic acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were employed to polymerize waterborne polyurethane. The polyurethane prepolymer was extended with chitosan of two different molecular weight (100,000 and 150,000), and used as finishing agent for acrylic fabrics. The antibacterial activity of the acrylic fabric treated with the polyurethane-chitosan solution was improved even after 15 washing times. Pretreatment of acrylic fabrics with hydrazine hydrate was found to improve the uptake of the polymer by the fabric. The effects of hydrazine and polyurethane treatments on some of the inherent properties of acrylic were assessed. The functional groups of polyurethane prepolymer as well as polyurethane extended with chitosan were confirmed with the analysis of the spectra of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).

Atmospheric plasma treatment to improve durability of a water and oil repellent finishing for acrylic fabrics

In this study, the influence of an atmospheric plasma treatment on the durability of a commercial water and oil repellent finish was tested. Acrylic fabrics were processed with a RF atmospheric pressure plasma generator and afterwards a fluorocarbon finish was applied through a traditional pad-dry-cure method. Two gas mixtures were tested (helium and helium/oxygen) with different plasma treatment times. The ageing of the finishing was simulated through repeated accelerated laundry cycles. The water and oil repellencies were measured through standard test methods. While the initial water and oil repellency did not change, the plasma treatment improved the durability of the finish after artificial ageing. Scanning electron microscopy analyses were carried out to highlight morphological changes.

The antimicrobial characteristic study of acrylic fiber treated with metal salts and direct dyes

Acrylic fabric was treated with direct dyes in combination with copper and zinc sulfates as mordanting agents and then tested for their antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The metal salts used were also studied for their likely effects on the antimicrobial property of fabrics dyed with C.I. Direct Yellow 12, C.I. Direct Red 23, C.I. Direct Red 31, and C.I. Direct Black 38. Untreated (control) acrylic fabric exhibited no antibacterial behavior whilst dyed and mordanted fabrics revealed considerable antimicrobial properties. It was found that the fabric treated with C.I. Direct Yellow 12 and copper sulfate as mordant achieved the highest antimicrobial activity with good washing fastness. Finally, FT-IR analysis, light, and washing fastnesses of the treated samples were evaluated.

Ultrasonic assisted dyeing: Dyeing of acrylic fabrics C.I. Astrazon Basic Red 5BL 200%

The dyeing of acrylic fabrics using C.I. Astrazon Basic Red 5BL 200% has been studied with both conventional and ultrasonic techniques. The effect of dye concentration, dye bath pH, ultrasonic power, dyeing time and temperature were studied and the resulting shades obtained by dyeing with both techniques were compared. Colour strength values obtained were found to be higher with ultrasonic than with conventional heating. The results of fastness properties of the dyed fabrics were studied. X-ray and Scanning Electron Microscope SEM were carried out on dyed samples using both methods of dyeing to find out an explanation for the better dyeability of acrylic fabrics with (US) method. Dyeing kinetics of acrylic fabrics using C.I. Astrazon Basic Red 5BL 200% using conventional and ultrasonic conditions were compared. The time/dye-uptake isotherms are revealing the enhanced dye-uptake in the second phase of dyeing. The values of dyeing rate constant, half-time of dyeing and standard affinity and ultrasonic efficiency have been calculated and discussed.

Investigation of effect of fibres modulus on pilling of acrylic fabrics

Pills are formed by entangling fibres into discrete balls on the surface of fabrics which are usually the result of wear, abrasion, washing or a combination of all three. In the present study, the effect of initial modulus of fibres on the pilling of woven fabrics was investigated. For this purpose, non-shrinkable (regular) and shrinkable (high bulk) acrylic fibres which have different initial modulus, were used. By using different percentages of them, five kinds of yarn were produced. Twill woven fabrics (T 1/2 z1) produced from these yarn were tested on ICI pilling box tester. Results of pilling test performed on the sample showed that by increasing the percentage of non-shrinkable (regular) fibres with high initial modulus, the tendency of fibres to leave the structure of yarn increases and they will present on the surface of fabrics as pills.

Flame Retardant Protective Coating Applied in Textile 100% Acrylic Fabrics

ABSTRACTTextile 100 % acrylic fabrics have been used in tapestry for a long time. One of the drawbacks of this type of fabrics is its great flammability. Textile fabrics are coated with flame retardant in order to reduce the flammability. We present some results concerning the use of commercial products (Flame-Out, Borax (Na2B4O5(OH)4•8H2O), and Hexametaphosphate of Sodium (Na16P14O43) as flame retardants for textile 100 % acrylic fabrics. The flame retardant capabilities, mechanical properties and structural characteristics of the textile fabrics before and after the use of these products were investigated throughout the special textile methods for inflammability and mechanical resistibility as well as infra-red spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electronic microscopy. After the use of the flame retardants the mechanical properties of the fabrics were improved or at least remained the same as compared to fabrics without any treatment. The use of Borax / Hexametaphosphate from Sodium /Water results in the essential increase of combustion retardation time about 2 minutes as compared with 8 seconds for untreated fabrics.

Direct coloration of textiles with photochromic dyes. Part 1: Application of spiroindolinonaphthoxazines as disperse dyes to polyester, nylon and acrylic fabrics†

1,3,3‐Trimethylspiroindoline‐2,3′‐3H‐naphth[2,1‐b][1,4]oxazine (1a) and 6′‐piperidino‐1,3,3‐trimethylspiroindoline‐2,3′‐3H‐naphth[2,1‐b][1,4]oxazine (1b) were applied as disperse dyes to polyester, nylon and acrylic fabrics. Under optimised dyeing conditions, photochromic fabrics were produced which, on irradiation with ultraviolet or exposure to sunlight, turned blue (1a) or blueish‐purple (1b). Dye 1a showed enhanced photochromic colour change performance compared with dye 1b. The photochromic colour build was highest on nylon and lowest on acrylic fabric. The colour change properties and the technical performance (wash fastness and photostability) of the photochromic fabrics were evaluated using specifically adapted colour measurement methods. The data were analysed in terms of variation of lightness, a*, b*, chroma, hue angle and ΔE, colour difference before and after exposure, and K/S curves as a function of irradiation time. The fabrics generally showed good wash fastness. Although the colour build‐up decreased with exposure to the Xenotest fadeometer, some residual photochromism remained after prolonged exposure.

Antimicrobial Properties of Acrylic Fabrics Dyed with Direct Dye and a Copper Salt

In this research work, acrylic fabric with an antimicrobial function was prepared by dyeing with C.I. Direct Blue 168 and copper sulfate as mordanting agent. The effects of various factors which may affect the antimicrobial property of the treated fabric, such as copper sulfate concentration and temperature in pre- and post-mordanting procedures, were studied. Antimicrobial properties of treated fabrics were evaluated against common pathogenous bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Untreated acrylic fabric showed no antimicrobial behavior, whilst dyed and copper mordanted fabrics possessed considerable antimicrobial properties. It was found that the treated fabric with 2 % copper sulfate in pre- and post-mordanting scenarios retained the highest antimicrobial property with good washing fastness. It was also shown that using higher temperature in the mordanting stage could lead to a higher antimicrobial functionality on mordanted dyed fabrics. Furthermore, K/S value, FTIR spectra, light and washing fastnesses of the treated fabrics were evaluated.

Reutilização de efluente de tingimentos de fibras acrílicas pós-tratamento fotoeletroquímico

On a laboratory scale effluents were produced from bichromic dyeing of acrylic fabrics with the basic dyes Blue Astrazon FGGL 300% and Yellow Gold Astrazon GL 200%. The residual dyeing baths were subjected to a photoelectrochemical treatment and reused in a second dyeing process. In the reutilization study, dyeings with treated effluent were compared with standard dyeings with distilled water. The results of dyeings using 100% of treated effluent were unsatisfactory, but the substitution of 10 to 30% of the treated effluent by distilled water resulted in reduced and more acceptable values for difference in colour intensity (ΔE) between 1.86 and 0.3.

New Analytical Method for the Determination of Detergent Concentration in Water by Fabric Dyeing

The use of harmful organic solvents in classrooms has become a critical issue of concern in the field of chemistry education. This article describes a classroom activity at a high school in which an acrylic fabric was used as the extraction medium in the analysis of the detergent concentration in water instead of organic solvents. Dyes were used to combine with the detergent in solutions of different concentration. The colored, dye–detergent compound produced was then extracted by adsorption onto fabric. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as the detergent and a new inexpensive handmade reflection photometer, assembled with inexpensive materials such as LED, PVC tube, and CdS sensor, was used to determine the color depth of the dyed fabric. The calibration curves of color depth versus the SDS concentration can be used to determine the unknown concentration of the SDS solution. The experimental results indicate that this harmless and environmentally friendly analytical method for determining detergent concentration can be safely introduced into schools.

Using a nitrilase for the surface modification of acrylic fibres

The surface of an acrylic fibre was modified with a commercial nitrilase (EC 3.5.5.1). The effect of fibre solvents and polyols on nitrilase catalysis efficiency and stability was investigated. The nitrilase action on the acrylic fabric was improved by the combined addition of 1 M sorbitol and 4% N, N-dimethylacetamide. The colour levels for samples treated with nitrilase increased 156% comparing to the control samples. When the additives were introduced in the treatment media, the colour levels increased 199%. The enzymatic conversion of nitrile groups into the corresponding carboxylic groups, on the fibre surface, was followed by the release of ammonia and polyacrylic acid. A surface erosion phenomenon took place and determined the "oscillatory" behaviour of the amount of dye uptake with time of treatment. These results showed that the outcome of the application of the nitrilase for the acrylic treatment is intimately dependent on reaction media parameters, such as time, enzyme activity and formulation.

Different measures of sensitivity of recipe colour to random and proportional dye concentration error. Part 3: Observed repeatability in regard to predicted sensitivity

The essential question of the paper ‘Can the predicted sensitivity to random and/or proportional dye concentration errors assist in selecting the most repeatable recipes?’ was investigated using the laboratory dyeing of acrylic fabric with basic dyes. When the dye strength errors were not involved, the biggest scattering of the recipe colour in repeated dyeings was observed in the cases of light neutral target colours, where the predicted sensitivity to random concentration errors was also the highest. For a few low‐saturated targets, eight recipes with different predicted sensitivities to random errors were treated. In six cases out of the seven treated, those recipes less sensitive to random concentration errors generally performed better than the more sensitive ones, but the correlation was rather weak. For those cases when the dye strength errors were included, experiments were also carried out with several different recipes for a neutral medium‐lightness target colour.

Compression properties of weft knitted fabrics consisting of shrinkable and non-shrinkable acrylic fibers

High-bulk worsted yarns with different shrinkable and non-shrinkable acrylic fibers blend ratios are produced and then single jersey weft knitted fabrics with three different structures and loop lengths are constructed. The physical properties of produced yarns and compression properties of produced fabrics at eight pressure values (50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 g/cm2) were measured using a conventional fabric thickness tester. Then, weft-knitted fabric compression behavior was analyzed using a two parameters model. It is found that at 40% shrinkable fibre blending ratio the maximum yarn bulk, shrinkage, abrasion resistance and minimum yarn strength are obtained. It is also shown that high-bulk acrylic yarn has the highest elongation at 20% shrinkable fibre blend ratio. The statistical regression analysis revealed that the compression behavior of acrylic weft-knitted fabrics is highly closed to two parameter model proposed for woven fabrics. It is also shown that for weft-knitted structure, there is an incompressible layer (V′) which resists against high compression load. Acrylic weft-knitted fabrics with knit-tuck structure exhibit higher compression rigidity and lower softness than the plain and knitmiss structures. In addition, at 20% shrinkable fibre blend ratio, the high-bulk acrylic weft-knitted fabrics are highly compressible.

The effect of additives and mechanical agitation in surface modification of acrylic fibres by cutinase and esterase

The surface of an acrylic fibre containing about 7% of vinyl acetate was modified using Fusarium solani pisi cutinase and a commercial esterase, Texazym PES. The effect of acrylic solvents and stabilising polyols on cutinase operational stability was studied. The half-life time of cutinase increased by 3.5-fold with the addition of 15% N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) and by 3-fold with 1M glycerol. The impact of additives and mechanical agitation in the protein adsorption and in the hydrolysis of vinyl acetate from acrylic fabric was investigated. The hydroxyl groups produced on the surface of the fibre were able to react specifically with Remazol Brilliant Blue R (cotton reactive dye) and to increase the colour of the acrylic-treated fabric. The best staining level was obtained with a high level of mechanical agitation and with the addition of 1% DMA. Under these conditions, the raise in the acrylic fabric colour depth was 30% for cutinase and 25% for Texazym. The crystallinity degree, determined by X-ray diffraction, was not significantly changed between control samples and samples treated with cutinase. The results showed that the outcome of the application of these enzymes depends closely on the reaction media conditions.

Effects of pressure and temperature on dyeing acrylic fibres with basic dyes in supercritical carbon dioxide

The dyeing of acrylic fibre with CI Basic Blue 47 has been investigated using an ammonium carboxylate perfluoropolyether as an auxiliary in order to perform the reverse micellar system in supercritical carbon dioxide media. The basic dye was satisfactorily solubilised in the interior of the reverse micelle in the system, and dyeability in the supercritical carbon dioxide media was excellent, even in the absence of a retardant and/or an acid. The optimum proton-rich condition for dyeing of acrylic fabric is performed in reverse micelle aggregates and the proton-rich water pool is suitable for dye uptake by the fibre even without the presence of additives. Changes in glass transition temperature of acrylic fibre in the carbon dioxide media also influence the dyeing behaviour of acrylic fabric.

Antimicrobial cationic dyes. Part 3: simultaneous dyeing and antimicrobial finishing of acrylic fabrics

The antimicrobial cationic dyes were employed in dyeing acrylic fabrics. The effects of dyeing time, dyeing concentration and dyeing temperature were investigated, and the incorporated dye molecules on acrylics were analyzed. It was found that these functional dyes could be effectively introduced to acrylic fibers to achieve simultaneous coloration and functional finishing effects. All the treated fabrics exhibited antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The washing durability of antimicrobial functions on the treated fabrics was further studied.

Effect of mineral acids on the properties of acrylic fabrics

Acrylic fabrics have been treated with sulphuric, hydrochloric and phosphoric acids and the treated fabrics dyed with a cationic dye at 80°C for various times. The pretreatments were found to improve dyeability with this type of dye, and the fastness properties were also improved. The effect on nitrogen and carboxylic content, moisture regain, shrinkage, tensile strength and elongation have also been studied. Infrared spectra have been used to suggest the structural changes in the treated acrylic fabric.

Studies toward a universal dye for textile fibres

A new organic dye was synthesised as part of an approach to producing a dye that could be applied to any of a variety of widely used fibre types. The dye synthesised is best described as a disperse‐reactive dye and was obtained from a sequence of reactions that used an acid yellow dye as a starting compound. Dichlorotriazine was used as the reactive group in the target dye and the chemical structures of the new dye and its precursors were confirmed using 1H NMR, mass spectrometry and FTIR analyses. In the neutral form, the dye was suitable for polyester, nylon and wool fibres. When the pH was adjusted to 9 it dyed cotton, albeit in a pastel shade only. By adding N, N‐dimethylethylenediamine to the dyebath, the dye could be applied to acrylic fabric at pH 5. The fastness of the dyed fibres was also evaluated.
