Enhanced Environmental Sustainability for the Acoustic Absorption Properties of Cabuya Fiber in Building Construction Using Machine Learning Predictive Model

Sustainability in construction is a growing concern due to the significant polluting waste generated before, during, and after a building’s life cycle. The use of natural materials can significantly reduce the environmental footprint in obtaining, manufacturing, transportation, execution, use, maintenance, and demolition of the building, especially when locally sourced. Natural fibers, in particular, can be used in room acoustics, offering good acoustic absorption while meeting sustainability goals. The objectives of this paper are to evaluate cabuya fiber, grown in Ecuador, as an acoustic absorbing material and to introduce a novel approach using machine learning to simulate the material’s acoustic properties. Eight samples of cabuya fiber, bound with a solution of water and Ca(OH)2, were prepared with thicknesses between 12 and 30.6 mm. The sound absorption coefficients (SACs) were calculated using an impedance tube, following international standards. A Gaussian regression model was built for the predictions. The results showed that the 30.6 mm sample achieved maximum absorption coefficients of 0.91 at 2 kHz and 0.9 at 5 kHz. The model predictions are very accurate, with a mean square error of just 0.0002. These findings offer valuable insights into using cabuya fiber and advanced predictive models to enhance building acoustic performance and reduce environmental impact.

Application of Cellulose and Paper-Based Products in Building Acoustics

This article presents a comprehensive acoustic study of paper-based building products: cellulose wool, paperboard, corrugated cardboard, and honeycomb panels. The material configurations included the intact form as well as the various modifications, i.e., density variation, multiple-layered staking, perforation or acoustic metamaterial setup. Tests covered acoustic absorption and insulation properties, with the last examined under excitation of both a plane wave and a diffused field. Additionally, the cellulose wool is provided with the characteristic impedance and propagation wavenumber results; and the paperboard was tested for its dynamic elastic and damping properties. The paper-based products, giving their weight, prove to be a convincing replacement for conventional materials by both absorptive and insulation performance. The maximum acquired sound reduction index, for exceptionally lightweight (2.2 kg/m2) paper double-wall metamaterial structure, reached 26 dB.

Multifunctional hybrid plate lattice structure with high energy absorption and excellent sound absorption

Lattice structures are featured by their extraordinary mechanical performances in specific stiffness, specific strength, energy absorption, and sound absorption, etc. The recent trend of multifunctionality in engineering applications has raised new requirements for the integration of their mechanical and acoustic properties. In this paper, a multifunctional hybrid plate lattice structure denoted as SBHP is proposed by hybridizing the traditional body-centered cubic plate (BCCP) and simple cubic plate (SCP) lattice structures, and its acoustic and energy absorption properties are investigated by theoretical modeling, simulation analysis and experimental verification. The effects of hole diameters and plate thicknesses on the sound absorption performance are investigated by impedance matching and system damping state analysis. The results show that the average sound absorption coefficient of SBHP-1 is increased by 24% and 62%, and the normalized half-absorption bandwidth is enlarged by 45% and 89% than those of BCCP and SCP, respectively. Heterogeneous lattice structures constructed by using the synergistic mechanism of strong and weak coupling have a more outstanding broadband sound absorption effect. This work provides an effective approach for the design of multifunctional lightweight structures with excellent broadband sound absorption and high energy absorption.

Influence of airflow resistance on acoustic behaviour of needle-punched nonwoven structures

Textile materials and structures have gained significant attention in the field of noise reduction due to their porosity, softness, and good acoustic absorption properties. Porous materials are an excellent example of passive materials, which reduces sound energy by dissipating heat energy due to the presence of void structure. In textiles, nonwovens are highly porous and less expensive materials compared to woven and knitted structures. In this research, flax, jute, and polyester nonwovens were used to study the effect of various parameters such as fiber fineness, fiber cross section, areal density, and punch density on the airflow resistivity of the nonwovens and in turn its influence on the sound absorption coefficient. It was observed that the acoustic performance of woven and nonwoven structures is mainly dependent on the porosity or bulk density of the structure which also influences the airflow resistivity of the fabrics. Therefore, the investigation of the airflow resistance of the nonwovens and its correlation with the sound absorption coefficient became an important part of this study. An instrument based on ISO 9053 standard was fabricated to measure the airflow resistivity. It was observed that the increase in the areal density leads to increase in the airflow resistance of the nonwoven. The airflow resistance increases as the mass density increases and porosity decreases. It was observed that the sound absorption coefficient and airflow resistance were directly proportional.

Acoustic and thermal properties of panels made of fruit stones waste with coconut fibre

Using natural porous and fibrous materials for acoustic and thermal conditioning in the construction sector is a solution to achieve a comfort level in buildings. The novelty of this research work lies in employing agricultural and agro-industry waste to solve noise and thermal insulation problems. This study was conducted to investigate a multilayered panel made of fruit stones and coconut fibre from agro-industry waste. Acoustic absorption, and acoustic and thermal transmission, tests were run on four different fruit stone types, olive, cherry, apricot and peach, plus a coconut fibre layer. Although they are not structural elements, bending tests were run to ensure panels’ structural integrity. Acoustic tests complied with the recommendations of Standards ISO 10534–2 and ASTM E 2611–09, based on the standing wave tube to obtain the acoustic absorption coefficient and sound transmission loss, respectively. Standard EN 12667 was considered for the thermal test to determine the thermal conductivity coefficient based on the hot plate method. The results show an average sound absorption coefficient above 0.5 and sound insulation over 25 dB within certain frequency ranges. The cherry panels had absorption values of around 0.7 and apricots had sound insulation values of up to 30 dB. Samples’ thermal transmittance coefficient values were between 3.0 and 3.4 (W/m2K), which indicate panels’ ability to provide thermal insulation. The cherry and olive panels obtained the lowest thermal conductivity (around 0.14 W/mK). The backing effect of the coconut fibre layer improves all the panels’ acoustic absorption and thermal properties.

Investigation of sound absorption on a polymeric acoustic metamaterial using 3D printing process

AbstractThis paper presents the design and characterization of DENORMS (Designs for Noise‐Reducing Materials and Structures) cell‐based acoustic metamaterial developed using a 3D printing technique. The metamaterial's acoustic absorption properties were investigated through experimental testing and numerical simulations. The experimental testing of the acoustic metamaterial was conducted in an impedance tube using a two‐microphone method. The numerical simulations were carried out using a thermoviscous module. The simulations allowed for a deeper understanding of the influence of geometric parameters on the absorption coefficient, providing valuable insights for optimizing the design. It was observed that upon increasing the spherical diameter while maintaining the same cylindrical diameter and cylindrical length resulted in an increase in the absorption coefficient throughout the frequency range. It was also observed that upon increasing the cylindrical diameter, there was a significant decrement of absorption coefficient, and upon increasing the length of the cylinder, there was a shift of response toward lower frequency. The augmentation in cell count from 9 to 24 led to a rise in the absorption coefficient and a shift of the response toward lower frequencies. The findings highlight the significance of photopolymer 3D printing in tailoring complex geometries for enhanced performance of the acoustic metamaterial.Highlights Photopolymeric resin used for DENORMS cell‐based acoustic metamaterial. Listening to the acidity of the ocean: Inversion of passive deep sea acoustic data for pH

Ocean acidification is an ongoing concern due to its impact on the marine ecosystem. The volume integrated pH of sea water can be determined from the depth-dependence of ambient sound, which depends on the acoustic absorption properties of seawater. For a wind-driven noise in the ocean over the band 1–10 kHz, two main contributions to sound attenuation are associated with the ionic relaxation of boric acid (<3 kHz), related to pH, and magnesium sulfate (>3 kHz), unrelated to pH. When local winds are strong (>10 m/s), the ambient noise is dominated by locally generated surface noise and has a depth-independent directionality and a weakly frequency and depth-dependent intensity, due to sound absorption. By measuring the attenuation of sound in a wide frequency band, it is possible to estimate pH by comparing the experimentally measured attenuation with an analytical theory of passive acoustic absorption spectroscopy. Measurements of the depth-dependent ambient sound field were carried out in the Philippine Sea, Mariana Trench, and Tonga Trench throughout 2009—2021. The wideband (5 Hz—30 kHz) acoustic data were recorded with untethered free-falling autonomous recording systems carrying two or four hydrophones.

Effects of Freeze-Drying Processes on the Acoustic Absorption Performance of Sustainable Cellulose Nanocrystal Aerogels.

Cellulose aerogels have great prospects for noise reduction applications due to their sustainable value and superior 3D interconnected porous structures. The drying principle is a crucial factor in the preparation process for developing high-performance aerogels, particularly with respect to achieving high acoustic absorption properties. In this study, multifunctional cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) aerogels were conveniently prepared using two distinct freeze-drying principles: refrigerator conventional freezing (RCF) and liquid nitrogen unidirectional freezing (LnUF). The results indicate that the rapid RCF process resulted in a denser CNC aerogel structure with disordered larger pores, causing a stronger compressive performance (Young's modulus of 40 kPa). On the contrary, the LnUF process constructed ordered structures of CNC aerogels with a lower bulk density (0.03 g/cm3) and smaller apertures, resulting in better thermal stability, higher diffuse reflection across visible light, and especially increased acoustic absorption performance at low-mid frequencies (600-3000 Hz). Moreover, the dissipation mechanism of sound energy in the fabricated CNC aerogels is predicted by a designed porous media model. This work not only paves the way for optimizing the performance of aerogels through structure control, but also provides a new perspective for developing sustainable and efficient acoustic absorptive materials for a wide range of applications.

Mycelium-Based Composites as a Sustainable Solution for Waste Management and Circular Economy.

The global population is expected to increase by nearly 2 billion individuals over the next three decades, leading to a significant surge in waste generation and environmental challenges. To mitigate these challenges, there is a need to develop sustainable solutions that can effectively manage waste generation and promote a circular economy. Mycelium-based composites (MBCs) are being developed for various applications, including packaging, architectural designs, sound absorption, and insulation. MBCs are made by combining fungal mycelium with organic substrates, using the mycelium as a natural adhesive. Mycelium, the vegetative part of fungi, can be grown on various organic feedstocks and functionalized into a range of diverse material types that are biobased and thus more sustainable in their production, use, and recycling. This work aims to obtain mycelium-based composites with acoustic absorption properties, using coffee grounds and agricultural waste as raw materials. The topic approached presents a new method of recovering spent coffee grounds that does not involve high production costs and reduces two current environmental problems: noise pollution and abundant waste. Measurements of the normal-incidence sound absorption coefficient were presented and analyzed. Mycelium-based composites offer an innovative, sustainable approach to developing bio-composite sound-absorbing surfaces for interior fittings. The material by Ganoderma lucidum exhibits exceptional sound-absorbing properties at frequencies below 700 Hz, which is a crucial aspect of creating sound-absorbing materials that effectively absorb low-frequency sound waves. The modular construction system allows for a high degree of flexibility to adapt to short-term changes in the workplace.

Sustainable versatile chitin aerogels: facile synthesis, structural control and high-efficiency acoustic absorption.

Bio-based materials with excellent acoustic absorption properties are in great demand in architecture, interior, and human settlement applications for efficient noise control. In this study, crayfish shells, a form of kitchen waste, are utilized as the primary material to produce ultralight and multifunctional chitin aerogels, which effectively eliminate noise. Different replacement solvents and freezing rates were employed to regulate the porous structures of chitin aerogels, and their resulting acoustic absorption performance was investigated. Results demonstrate that employing deionized water as the replacement solvent and utilizing a common-freeze mode (frozen via refrigerator at -26 °C) can produce chitin aerogels with larger porosity (96.26%) and apertures, as well as thicker pore walls. This results in superior broadband acoustic absorption performance (with a maximum absorption coefficient reaching 0.99) and higher Young's modulus (28 kPa). Conversely, chitin aerogels solvent-exchanged with tert-butyl alcohol or subjected to quick-freeze mode (frozen via liquid nitrogen) exhibit smaller porosity (92.32% and 94.84%) and apertures, thereby possessing stronger diffuse reflection of visible light (average reflectance of 94.30% and 88.18%), and enhanced low-frequency (500 to 1600 Hz) acoustic absorption properties. Additionally, the acoustic absorption mechanism of fabricated chitin aerogels was predicted using a simple three-parameter analysis Johnson-Champoux-Allard-Lafarge (JCAL) model. This study presents a novel approach to developing multifunctional biomass materials with excellent acoustic absorption properties, which could have a wide range of potential applications.

Acoustic and thermal performance of luffa fiber panels for sustainable building applications

Sound-absorbing and thermal-insulating materials have a noteworthy role in the performance of buildings. In recent years, there has been a significant focus on utilizing natural fibers as construction materials for thermal insulation and sound absorption purposes. In this study, luffa, an abundant and eco-friendly natural fiber, was explored as a sustainable material with potential high acoustic and thermal performance due to its intrinsic hollow and sponge-like structure. The experiments were designed using the response surface method based on central composite design (RSM-CCD) to find the best combination of input variables including thickness, density, and binder content for optimal performance. The sound absorption average (SAA) and effective thermal conductivity (Keff) values of the panels ranged from 0.16-0.68, and 0.033–0.054 W/(mK), respectively. It was found that both the SAA and Keff are significantly influenced by thickness and density, while binder content does not have a significant effect. The optimal condition for fabricating luffa panels was found to be a thickness of 40 mm, density of 225 kg/m3, and binder content of 7.5 %. Furthermore, the acoustic characteristics of the optimized panels were examined in a conference hall using the Odeon software. The acoustic absorption properties of panels were also predicted using the Johnson–Champoux–Allard and Attenborough models.

Characterization of an Arundo donax-based composite: A solution to improve indoor comfort

Arundo donax (giant reed or giant cane) is a widely available, perennial, invasive, non-food crop, present worldwide and employed for several uses, including building practices. Considering the increasing demand for sustainable building materials, A. donax can be an efficient solution. This study investigated its properties as a bio-aggregate mixed with a sodium silicate solution as an adhesive. A horizontal analysis that provided a general characterization of the composite was carried out. The results showed that the A. donax-based composite had an apparent density of 517 kg/m³, thermal conductivity of 0.128 W/(m.K), and high hygroscopicity, with a moisture buffering value of 4.33 g/(m² %RH), property that could be both an advantage for indoor comfort and a drawback. The uncommon sound absorption behaviour can be comparable to granular materials, with the highest sound absorption coefficient values, α, between 600 Hz and 700 Hz. Due to the range and the shape of the acoustic absorption property, this material may be helpful in acoustic treatments for speech noise. The mechanical tests defined flexural and compressive strength, respectively, 0.35 N/mm² and 0.9 N/mm², ensuring applicability. Above all, these tests opened new possible solutions for A. donax-based composite production either alone or in combination with other agro-industrial wastes and justified further tests, such as fire resistance and bio-susceptibility.

Foam processability of polypropylene/sisal fiber composites having near‐critical fiber length for acoustic absorption properties

AbstractThe current research aims to develop a sound‐absorbing material from polypropylene (PP) and sisal fibers (SFs). The study explores the foam processability of PP/SF composites with near‐critical fiber length, employing supercritical CO2‐assisted batch foaming technology. Optimized foam processing conditions were determined to be 145°C, 100 bar, and 15 min saturation time. These conditions resulted in foams with the lowest density, maximum volume expansion ratio and an overall microcellular structure. Notably, increasing the fiber concentration significantly enhanced the compressive properties, exhibiting a remarkable 3000% improvement with the addition of 40 wt% SFs. Dynamic mechanical analysis further revealed improved dampening properties of the composites after foaming. Moreover, the incorporation of SFs led to an increase in the noise reduction coefficient, while foaming additionally improved the sound absorption properties. This renders the material highly applicable for soundproofing purposes. Thus, produced PP/SF microcellular foams offer properties that can potentially be used to produce lightweight structural components for acoustic absorption applications.

Recycling of eps foam and demolition wastes in the preparation of ecofriendly render mortars with thermal-acoustic insulation properties

The design of render-mortars from construction and demolition waste (CDW) was evaluated. Fine aggregates from red-clay-brick waste, mortar and concrete waste were used, together with recycled expanded-polystyrene (EPS) as lightweight filler. Mixes composed of 70%-recycled aggregates, and 30% consisting of a matrix of Portland cement were produced. Characterization tests were conducted on the physical, mechanical, thermal, and acoustic properties. The render-mortar A4, A7 and A9 can be classified according to compressive strength results as CSI-W0 for interior use under standard UNE-EN-998-1. The A7 mortar, with the best physical and mechanical results, contained 21% EPS, 17.5% brick waste and 17.5% mortar waste. Mix A4 obtained the lowest thermal conductivity, 0.12 W/m·K - a reduction of 79% compared to the commercial-mortar AC1. The acoustic absorption properties were also enhanced by the incorporation of EPS, such that the A4, A7, and A9 mixes were identified as Absorbent for the frequencies of 2000 Hz and 4000 Hz.

Mechanical and acoustic absorption properties of lightweight fly ash/slag-based geopolymer concrete with various aggregates

Acoustic absorption and thermal insulation play a key role in modern buildings to make living comfortable and energy-saving. This paper aims to study the workability, physical and mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, and acoustic absorption of modified geopolymer concrete (GPC) with various types of lightweight aggregates (LWA) such as extruded polystyrene foam beads waste (EPS), vermiculite, or lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA). The mixtures of geopolymer concrete have been modified by substituting for the ordinary aggregates (dolomite) by volume with various ratios of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% for each type of LWA. Besides, the mechanisms of specimens were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and mapping. The results illustrated that the compressive strength values range between 8.5 and 47.50 MPa. The hardened density of concrete was between 1500 and 2450 kg/m3, and thermal conductivity was between 0.45 and 1.16 W/m.K. Geopolymer concrete was considered an acoustic absorption and thermally insulating material. Geopolymer concrete was considered an acoustic absorption and thermally insulating material. EPS, vermiculite, and LECA will be beneficial for applications in lightweight geopolymer concrete due to their capability to reduce weight and excellent thermal conductivity, and the property of improving acoustic absorption. The mechanical results indicated that 25% LECA was the best compared with the ratios of other LWA and gained 35.0, 2.7, and 4.3 MPa of compressive, splitting tensile and flexural strength, respectively. It had positive workability; the thermal conductivity was 1.1 W/m.K, and hardened density was decreased to 10% compared to the control. In addition, LECA is considered the superior and suitable material for acoustic absorption compared with other aggregates.

Aluminum foams with complex pore topologies for acoustical applications

Metal foams are used in various industries due to the great variety of properties they possess such as high strength-to-weight ratio, high energy absorption, and the ability to endure extreme conditions. However, despite their desirable properties, traditional metal foams lack acoustic absorption properties because of their stochastic open porous structure—a function of the foaming process. Additive manufacturing (AM) can allow the fabrication of more complex foams; however, current metal AM methods provide significant processing and scalability challenges, especially in printing aluminum parts. Here, we present an alternative method for fabricating open-celled aluminum sound absorbers with controlled cellular architectures. The method relies on modeling the cellular templates using an implicit, field-based modeling method. The templates are then fabricated by combining polymer-based AM techniques and converted into aluminum Duocel® foams using ERG Aerospace Corporation’s proprietary foaming technology. The acoustical properties of the fabricated foams are then measured using a normal incidence impedance tube method. Our results show that this method allows the fabrication of highly complex cellular architectures that may be optimized to obtain application-specific multifunctional performance.

Acoustical properties of compressed earth blocks: Effect of compaction pressure, water hyacinth ash and lime

This study assessed the potential use of a mixture of lime and water hyacinth ash (WHA) as binders in fabrication of cylindrical compressed earth blocks (CEBs) with good acoustic absorption properties for building and construction. Different concentrations of the binders and compaction pressures were employed so as to vary the acoustical properties of the fabricated blocks. The geometric and transport parameters of their porous microstructure were recovered through probing using acoustic waves. A low-frequency acoustic wave guide was built for this purpose. It was found out that the transmission coefficient decreased with the compaction pressure, and with addition of lime, while WHA increased the transmission coefficient. The non-acoustical parameters recovered using the equivalent fluid model (JCAL) showed that the variation of the geometry of the microstructure of the blocks is what influences the acoustic transmission coefficient. Thus, the properties of the CEBs can be steered using binder concentration and compaction pressure in a controlled manner.

Life E-VIA: Prototypal Low-Noise Road Surface for the Reduction of Electric Vehicle Rolling Noise in Urban Area

Abstract In both the current and foreseen context of significant development of the electric vehicle (EV) fleet, a future increasing ratio of EVs in the urban traffic is expected, still enhanced in low-emission zones involving bans or restricted access to other vehicles. EVs are known to be quieter than conventional vehicles at low speed because of a low motor noise emission, resulting in a higher prevalence of rolling noise in the environmental noise. EVs differ from conventional vehicles in several parameters that can influence tyre/road noise, like weight and torque. The LIFE E-VIA project objectives consist in developing, implementing and assessing a low-noise road surface for light EV traffic in urban conditions, optimised from an acoustical and life cycle perspective. In parallel, an optimisation of EV tyres is investigated. Prior to forthcoming layout in Florence (Italy) for assessment under real traffic conditions, a prototypal road surface has been implemented and evaluated on a test track in Nantes (France). Preliminary tests carried out with different EVs on several road surfaces highlighted the variability of noise emission over vehicle types and pavements, leading to specific ranking. Two prototype versions of a low-noise road surface have been laid out in Nantes, respectively without and with crumb rubber. Both of them have been acoustically assessed with on-board microphones (CPX method) and at roadside (CPB method and microphone array). Constant speed, acceleration and deceleration conditions were considered for pass-by tests. Other acoustical or physical parameters have been measured: acoustic absorption, 3D-texture, mechanical impedance and skid resistance properties (BPN and MPD). In comparison with a reference DAC 0/10 road surface, very usual in France, a roadside noise reduction up to 4 dB(A) was found at steady pass-by speed 50 km/h. Grip values are very high and macrotexture levels moderate. Lastly, mixtures durability is analysed with laboratory tests.
