  • Iwona Skrodzka + 1 more

The significance of human capital for sustainable development has become a key area of research, especially in the context of regional disparities. The study contributes new knowledge by revealing statistically measurable links between the level of human capital development and the degree of achievement of sustainable development goals at the regional level. The main goal of this paper is to assess the impact of human capital on sustainable development across all 16 voivodeships in Poland, analysing the social, economic, and environmental dimensions. To provide a more comprehensive understanding, typological analyses were also conducted to classify regions based on synthetic indicators of human capital and sustainable development. Using cross-sectional data from 2022 provided by Statistics Poland, we employed partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to examine the structural relationships. Our results reveal a strong and statistically significant positive relationship between human capital and sustainable development (path coefficient = 0.875, p < 0.001). The social (loading = 0.912) and economic (loading = 0.884) dimensions strongly, positively reflect the sustainability construct, while the environmental dimension exhibits a moderately negative loading (–0.678), indicating possible trade-offs in policy priorities. The findings highlight regional variation, with Mazowieckie, Małopolskie, Dolnośląskie, and Pomorskie achieving the highest scores, and Lubuskie performing the lowest across both human capital and sustainability categories. This study contributes novel insights by applying a hierarchical PLS-SEM model and offering a regionally comparative typology. It underscores the importance of tailoring environmental policies to specific regional contexts to ensure that investments in human capital do not undermine ecological sustainability.

The Role of Using Green Concrete Materials for the Egyptian Residential Buildings Sector to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals
  • Mar 4, 2026
  • Buildings
  • Heba Marey + 2 more

Rapid urbanization in the Egyptian building sector has led to substantial consumption of conventional concrete material (CCM). Therefore, the use of sustainable construction materials has attracted considerable attention among stakeholders seeking to achieve sustainability. This paper investigates the use of green concrete materials (GCMs) in residential buildings to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We employ an assessment-based approach to investigate the relationship between GCMs and SDGs. Green concrete materials sustainability framework (GCM-SF) was developed from a comprehensive literature review and case studies. We analyzed 27 green concrete materials sustainability indicators (GCM-SI) using a five-point scale and a score matrix to define the contributions and relationships among GCMs, SDGs, and the three sustainability pillars. This study shows that the use of GCMs in residential buildings (RBs) makes a significant contribution to achieving SDGs. Results indicate that the highest contributions are 92% for SDG 12, 85% for SDG 11, 85% for SDG 6, 77% for SDG 9, 74% for SDG 8, 70% for SDG 3, and 70% for SDG 7. Additionally, the lowest contributions to GCM’s environmental indicators were observed for SDG4, SDG10, and SDG16. This can help environmental and construction stakeholders apply new rules and regulations for the use of GCMs in future residential projects. Social sustainability of RBs and applying GCMs for different building types needs further investigation in the future.

Abstract This study evaluates the role of green marketing and business model innovation (BMI) in the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) among the oil and gas extraction companies in Pakistan. Grounded in the resource-based view and ecological modernization theories, the study also examines the mediating role of government support. Data were collected through a questionnaire-based survey from CEOs, senior management, and operation managers in the oil and gas extraction companies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) by using a random sampling technique. The collected data were analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to find results. The outcomes reveal that green marketing, BMI, and government support have positive significant effects on SDG attainment in the energy sector. These results offer valuable insights for environmental regulators and practitioners to outline more influential strategies to enhance the sustainability outcomes. Although the topics of green marketing and BMI have gained substantial attention from academia, this is the prime research that introduces an inclusive model in these domains based on the resource-based view and the ecological modernization theories.

Assessing a Decade of Indonesia’s Forest Moratorium: Unintended Benefits on Poverty and Climate Disasters with Difference-in-Differences Analysis
  • Feb 28, 2026
  • Journal of Sustainable Forestry
  • Yessi Rahmawati + 1 more

ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of Indonesia’s 2011 forest moratorium on poverty levels and climate disasters using a Difference-in-Differences (DiD) approach, combining remote sensing data from Global Forest Watch with longitudinal microdata from the Indonesia Village Potential Survey (PODES) (2008–2021). The results show that the forest moratorium generally increased poverty levels, as it restricted income opportunities for communities dependent on forest resources, especially in the eastern part of Indonesia. However, the policy also had a positive impact on poverty reduction in the central region, where forest conditions and local economic factors were more favorable. Regarding climate disasters, the moratorium significantly reduced the frequency of floods, severe floods, landslides, and forest fires, highlighting the role of forest conservation in mitigating environmental degradation. The study suggests several policy recommendations, including strengthening monitoring of forest permits, enhancing local capacity-building programs, and improving governance to ensure the moratorium’s success and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

A novel deep learning framework for field-scale wheat yield prediction.
  • Feb 25, 2026
  • TAG. Theoretical and applied genetics. Theoretische und angewandte Genetik
  • M Lokeshwari + 6 more

A genetic algorithm-optimized deep neural network was developed using proximal sensing data to accurately predict wheat yield at field scale, outperforming traditional machine learning models under diverse conditions. Hand held or vehicle-mounted active proximal sensing technologies offer a rapid, non-destructive method for real-time crop monitoring through spectral vegetation indices. This study integrates such proximal sensing data into a deep learning framework for field-scale wheat yield prediction. Specifically, wheat yield is predicted using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), canopy temperature (CT), and plant height (PH) through a deep neural network (DNN) optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA). The model is trained on data from 3,350 diverse wheat germplasm grown under irrigated and rainfed conditions at two locations during the 2020-2021 winter season. Comparative analysis demonstrates that the GA-optimized DNN outperforms traditional machine learning models such as Random Forest Regression (RFR), Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), and Support Vector Regression (SVR). Among individual feature groups, NDVI measured at five wheat growth stages showing strong predictive capability, with R2 values ≥ 60% under irrigated and ≥ 50% under rainfed conditions. Additionally, RFR is employed to identify the most influential features for predicting grain yield. This pioneering study introduces the first-ever application of a GA-optimized deep neural network, leveraging handheld or vehicle-mounted proximal sensing data for predicting crop yield, in the context of Indian agriculture. The proposed approach offers a robust and scalable solution for pre-harvest yield estimation, supporting breeders and researchers in efficient genotype selection and contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals.

  • International journal of adolescent medicine and health
  • Ajeng Tias Endarti + 2 more

Microplastics have emerged as a growing environmental and public health concern, found in air, water, and food, with potential health impacts including respiratory, digestive, and endocrine disruption. Therefore, the preventive effort needs to be amplified. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three different microplastic education interventions, lecture-based education, peer group education, and infographic distribution, among high school students in DKI Jakarta. A quasi-experimental design was employed involving 334 students from six schools, with pre- and post-intervention assessments of knowledge and attitudes. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Kruskal-Wallis Test, followed by Dunn's post hoctest. Findings revealed that peer group and infographic interventions significantly improved knowledge scores, with the peer group showing the most substantial gains. However, lecture-based education did not yield significant improvement in knowledge. Attitude changes across all interventions were not statistically significant, although numerical improvements were observed, especially in the peer group. The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated significant differences in knowledge improvement across groups (p=0.0041), and Dunn's test confirmed a statistically significant difference between peer group and lecture-based education. The results suggest that interactive and peer-driven educational approaches may be more effective in enhancing students' understanding of microplastic pollution compared to traditional lectures. However, attitude change may require more prolonged or multifaceted interventions that integrate psychosocial and behavioral elements. Given the formative nature of adolescence and their potential as agents of environmental change, incorporating targeted and participatory education into school curricula is essential. These findings underscore the importance of using context-specific, engaging methods for environmental health education, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 and SDG13.

Understanding healthcare workers' green behavioral intentions in Taiwan: an integrated VAB-TPB framework with government policy as a moderator.
  • Feb 24, 2026
  • Journal of health organization and management
  • Xiyu Zhang + 3 more

This study investigates the psychological determinants of healthcare professionals' support for green hospital transitions by integrating the values-attitude-behavior (VAB) framework with the Theory of Planned Behavior. A survey of 300 Taiwanese healthcare employees was conducted, and the data were analyzed using Covariance-Based Structural EquationModeling. Green values (GV) had a significant positive influence on attitudes, subjective norms (SN), and perceived behavioral control (PBC). However, GV did not directly influence behavioral intention. Among the theory constructs, only PBC had a significant positive effect on behavioral intentions (BI). Attitudes and SN did not have significant impacts. Furthermore, government policy (GP) demonstrated a significant positive direct effect on BI, however, analysis found no significant moderating effects on the relationships between attitude, subjective norm, PBC and intention. The study focused on healthcare workers in Taiwan, future research should include more diverse populations or conduct comparative studies across various regions. Hospital managers should prioritize training and resource provision to enhance staff control over environmental practices, while policymakers should maintain clear regulations and incentives to accelerate progress toward carbon-neutral healthcare. The findings of this study have significant implications for the development of sustainable healthcare practices and the achievement of sustainable development goals. Originality lies in the study's integrated VAB-TPB framework, which is uniquely applied to the high-constraint healthcare environment, offering a more nuanced model than prior single-theory applications. This study differs by demonstrating the primacy of PBC over attitudes and norms in a professional context and identifying GP as a direct driver rather than a moderator of intention. Focusing on Taiwan provides a distinctive case study of a high-performing healthcare system facing an urgent, policy-driven sustainability transition, strengthening the study's contribution to the green healthcare field.

The achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), relies heavily on the performance of civil servants in delivering public services. This study examines the effects of work culture and work motivation on ASN performance and their contribution to sustainable development in Malang City. A quantitative approach was employed, using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) 4.0, with a stratified random sample of 100 ASN from sub-district offices and community health centers. Results indicate that work culture positively influences civil servants' performance (? = 0.449; p < 0.001) and SDG achievement (? = 0.433; p < 0.001). Work motivation also exerts a positive effect on performance (? = 0.339; p < 0.001) and SDGs (? = 0.363; p < 0.001). ASN performance significantly contributes to sustainable development (? = 0.290; p = 0.002) and mediates the relationship between work culture and SDGs (indirect effect = 13%) and between motivation and SDGs (indirect effect = 9.8%). These findings demonstrate that fostering a strong work culture and high motivation among civil servants directly and indirectly enhances sustainable development outcomes, providing empirical evidence linking civil servant performance to local SDG implementation. Keywords: Work Culture, Work Motivation, Performance, ASN, SDGs

The article conducts a correlation-regression analysis of the relationship between the index of the physical volume of gross domestic product in actual prices and factor variables, such as the agricultural output index, the food production index, and the consumer price index for food products. The calculation of the correlation coefficient showed the closest positive relationship between the index of the physical volume of gross domestic product in actual prices and the agricultural output index (0.81) and the food production index (0.86). The analysis of the econometric dependence and the consequences of the correlation between the index of the physical volume of gross domestic product in actual prices, the agricultural output index, and the food production index allowed us to confirm that the closest relationship exists between the net income received by agricultural enterprises and the indicators of the index of the physical volume of gross domestic product in actual prices and the agricultural output index. The conducted correlation-regression analysis also allowed to confirm the rather high influence of indicators of activity of agricultural business entities on the level of achievement of sustainable development goals. Based on the calculations, a model was generalized, which demonstrates the place of agricultural enterprises in the system of analysis of sustainable development. The proposed model summarizes the components of sustainable development in three main areas: economic, social and environmental, and demonstrates the interdependent relationship between the results of the activities of agricultural business entities and the level of achievement of strategic goals, objectives and indicators of sustainable development. The effectiveness of the implementation of the regional model of agricultural sector management largely depends on the effectiveness of interaction between state authorities, local governments, business entities and civil society. In addition, the model demonstrates the need for constant monitoring of the level of achievement of sustainable development goals at both the state and regional levels.

  • Sharon Asiamah-Agyeman + 6 more

Green economy (GE) is an important sustainable model that supports green practices and the achievement of sustainable development goals in the construction industry. However, the full-scale benefits of GE adoption in construction activities are short-lived by interconnected barriers in many developing economies such as Ghana. In particular, the transition to GE construction practices has been noted to hold a promising spot but it is undone by numerous challenges. Thus, this study aims to analyze the barriers to green economy implementation in the construction industry in Ghana. The source of the data was construction stakeholders using questionnaires. The data were analyzed with fuzzy synthetic evaluation to establish the critical barriers. The analysis revealed three key components of barriers including inadequate regulations, technological gaps and poor practice frameworks to GE. The principal implications of the article are twofold. First, the clusters of barriers offer understanding and a guide to construction practitioners towards developing measures to overcome the major challenges to GE integration into construction works. Second, the study presents relevant outputs which deepen knowledge on GE in construction literature and provide essential areas for further studies.

Governance and the SDG Challenge: How Corruption Undermines Education and Economic Progress in Pakistan
  • Feb 20, 2026
  • The Critical Review of Social Sciences Studies
  • Muhammad Sohail Hassan + 3 more

Corruption is a major hindrance towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Pakistan, and it is evident in both academic and economic realms. This paper explores the intersection between governance and corruption and how they have had negative impacts on the process of SDG implementation, especially in education and economic development. Combining the governance indicators, corruption indices, and SDG statistics, the study will show that corruption undermines institutional integrity, prevents the implementation of policy, and increases inequality. Using a mixed-methods research design based on the combination of qualitative case-study analysis and quantitative regression modelling, the results indicate a strong correlation between a high level of corruption and low educational achievement, economic stagnation, and a long-term implementation of the SDG targets. The findings highlight the need to change the system of governance, launch active anti-corruption initiatives and increase the institutional openness to reduce the negative impact of corruption and promote the SDG goals of Pakistan. The article ends by giving policy recommendations that can be used to build stronger governance structures, rejuvenate the education sector, and promote economic growth by use of evidence based anti-corruption policies.

The politics of legitimacy: roles of for-profit corporate and private philanthropic actors in global education
  • Feb 18, 2026
  • Journal of Education Policy
  • Lara Patil + 1 more

ABSTRACT High-net-worth individuals, and the business organizations they found and lead, are becoming a class of ‘elite’ donors who use philanthropic vehicles and mechanisms often drawn from business to achieve their philanthropic goals. With the entry of this class of donors into the realm of global education, the authors argue that we are witnessing the commodification of legitimacy. Utilizing comparative methodology, they examine case studies from Brazil, China, India, and the United States to systematically analyze global trends and regional differences in contemporary for-profit corporate and private philanthropic enactment. The analysis reveals consistent themes, with regard to philanthropic trends, as well as contemporary philanthropic enactment patterns that show the capitalist economy to be a driving force of globalization and transformation in global education. The discussion reflects on how new roles simultaneously support and undermine global education goals, highlighting these trade-offs as they relate to legitimacy, transparency, and accountability. This contribution brings the attendant vulnerabilities and trade-offs of non-state actor engagement to the forefront of discourse around the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 and considers safeguards that can be taken to ensure equitable and democratic education governance.

Leveraging FinTech-Driven Financial Inclusion and ESG Integration to Advance Affordable and Clean Energy Access
  • Feb 8, 2026
  • International Journal of Energy Economics and Policy
  • Ohoud Khasawneh + 1 more

The paper discusses how digital financial inclusion powered by financial technology and incorporation of environmental, social, and governance principles into finance can hasten the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 7. We provide a systematic literature review, which relies on peer-reviewed literature in energy economics, sustainable finance, and development literature. Our search and screening strategy is informed by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The analysis shows that financial inclusion, which is promoted by FinTech (e.g. mobile banking, digital lending, and crowdfunding) has increased access to energy (e.g. pay-as-you-go solar, microfinance to clean cooking) especially by underserved communities in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. At the same time, the ESG consideration in financial decision-making is directing investments to renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives. We discover that digital platforms and blockchain-based tools increase the levels of ESG data transparency and integrity, and strengthen the confidence of investors in green energy ventures. Nonetheless, it is also evidenced that financial inclusion should be accompanied with the introduction of clean energy to prevent the need to emit more carbon into the air through the consumption of additional energy. Our research gaps are household-level behavior, ESG adoption in developing markets and FinTech governance. Government and industry policies like subsidizing energy delivery through digital payments and requiring ESG reporting of FinTech companies will have the effect of making digital finance and sustainability agendas mutually reinforcing. All these points highlight the cross-cutting enabling nature of FinTech in sustainable energy shifts and the need to collaborate interdisciplinarily to utilize digital finance to achieve global clean energy targets.
