Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is a normal physiologic process that occurs in healthy infants, children and adults. When there is an abnormal esophageal pH test or a complication such as esophagitis there is a gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).Most authors agree that GER resolves spontaneously by two years of age. There is little information about those children with GERD. The Aim of this study was to know the presence of symptoms related to GER and GERD up to two year follow up. Methods: Prospective, longitudinal, comparative study of two groups of children. I.- 11 with GER and II 27 with GERD, by 24 h esophageal pH test abnormal according Boyles criteria. Table No 1 shows the profile of both groups. Statistical analysis was done using Fisher test and Mann-Whitney. Children from group II received omeprazole magnesium OMEM for 3 months. Results: There was no significant statistical differences between both groups. Regurgitation and irritability were similar in both groups: 18% and 11%. There was no statistical differences in weight, height etc. Conclusion: Children from Group I and II have the same incidence of persistent symptoms related to GER. Children from group II grew as well as children from group I. Early diagnosis and adequate treatment of GERD avoid complications and allow a normal growth. 3 months treatment wit OMEM seems to be enough in GERD group for avoid future complications.
