Introduction: Functional assessment of patient's independence is a systematic attempt to evaluate their abilities. The aim of the literature review was to determine which assessment scales are most frequently used in rehabilitation nursing and to assess their usefulness. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted. The research was done in December 2015 using the following databases: CINAHL, PubMed, COBIB.SI and the article database of the Slovenian Nursing Review journal. The following keywords in English were used: rehabilitation scales, rehabilitation, dependency, assessment outcome. The Boolean AND operator was used. From the total of 416 results, 19 articles were included in the final analysis. Results: Five content categories were developed: (1) the most frequently used assessment scales for assessing patient's independence and progress in nursing, (2) the validity and reliability of assessment scales, (3) a comparison of assessment scales, (4) the use of assessment scales, and (5) the impact of nurses on increasing patients' independence. Discussion and conclusion: There are numerous assessment scales that describe patient's functional independence. The Barthel Index scale is most often used, followed by a combined Functional Independent Measure + Functional Assessment Measure and Northwich Park Dependency Scale, which are among the most reliable for the use in rehabilitation health care. The latter two provide for a full assessment of a patient's nursing needs, and monitoring and evaluating work.

Introduction: There are various definitions of post-term pregnancy found in the literature, so guidelines for its management also vary. Pregnancy after 41 weeks of gestation results in additional risks for the foetus,so a decision to induce labour is often taken. However, induction can also cause certain complications and increase the need for proceeding to an operative birth. Methods: A quantitative approach was used in the research, which was based on data taken from the national perinatal information system. 10,163 births following post-term pregnancies were included in the analysis. Analysis was conducted with the statistical programme SPSS version 18.0, using descriptive statistics. Results: It has been established that with the extension of the pregnancy, the induction rate increases; after the 42nd week of gestation it reaches 41.8 %. Simultaneously, also the rate of operative deliveries grows and reaches 24.9 % after the 42nd week of gestation. Discussion and conclusions: The results on the type of labour in the case of post-term pregnancies in Slovenia confirm the findings of foreign research studies. Further research should focus on the state of health of post-mature newborn infants since the manner of completing the pregnancy does not necessarily indicate the well-being of a newborn infant. It might be useful to research Apgar scores, admission rates to intensive care units, blood pH values and reanimation procedures.

Introduction: Feelings experienced by students when undergoing their first clinical practice marks their ability to acquire knowledge and experience, and can therefore affect their further career. The purpose of this research was to explore common feelings of midwifery students as experienced at their first clinical practice in a maternity ward. Methods: Descriptive research method based on quantitative research approach was used. An online questionnaire was used as a research tool. A purpose sample (n = 52) was used and students of Years 2, 3 and the final year of midwifery study course at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ljubljana were invited to participate as respondents in the study. Basic descriptive statistics were calculated. Results: The most frequent feelings that students experienced during their first clinical practice in the delivery room were being inexperienced, the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge, and stress. Previous secondary education was most statistically significant in terms of experiencing feelings. Among the students who previously attended non-health care secondary schools there were more statistically significantly students who felt unaccepted in the a clinical environment (92 % vs. 79 % of former students of health care secondary schools). These students also more commonly perceived the gap between theory and practice (79 % vs. 64 % of former students of health care secondary schools). On the contrary, students from health care secondary schools felt more unexperienced and consequently felt greater fear of harming patients (82 % vs. 62 % of former students of non-health care secondary schools). Discussion and conclusion: If students experience feelings such as stress, fear and uncertainty during their clinical practice, this hinders their abilities to learn and build their self-esteem. It would be necessary to improve the organization of clinical practice in order to promote students' realistic expectations before they engage in clinical practice, and to introduce supervision by an individual clinical mentor and enable students to self-evaluate their own feelings after they have completed clinical practice.
