“En toda mujer honrada hay sentimientos maternales”: Maternal Characteristics in the Debate on Women’s Education in Concepción Arenal’s La mujer del porvenir (1869)

  • Angela Pierce

Concepción Arenal’s La mujer del porvenir (1869) was published in the context of the debates surrounding women’s education at the Conferencias Dominicales held that same year, which the author attended and reviewed. Arenal utilizes and expands on the popular contemporary notion of woman as the moral mother to society in order to support her position on the purpose of women’s education. The author’s employment of ethos and pathos emphasizes the importance of women’s education, which she justifies through the use of maternal characteristics, specifically those of the caregiver and moral guide. In her essay, Arenal demonstrates that education should offer mothers, and even women who are not mothers, the necessary preparation to fulfill their roles in society, including in the capacity as the sole or contributing economic provider for their children and other family members.
