Research data are a valuable asset of their own and individual researchers as well as the research community as a whole can benefit through data sharing practices and open science. These benefits include but are not limited to higher data quality or the more efficient use of time and financial resources. Despite these potential gains, data sharing is not widespread yet and processes of cultural change are needed to reap the benefits of data sharing. Against this background, the NFDI can function as a platform for discussion and provides a network that extends beyond individual research bubbles in the name of common interests and facilitate cultural change processes towards data sharing. A first collaborative workshop in April 2023 identified four central clusters of interest including 1. policies, strategies and funding; 2. communities, workshops and multipliers; 3. publications and 4. collaboration, communication and error cultures. Departing from this, we contemplate developing a vision on how to further encourage cultural change in the NFDI through a series of workshops. As a result, a vision of cultural change within and with the NFDI will be published by the end of 2023 to further guide the processes to facilitate cultural change. A first step could be to change the guiding metaphor for data: Not “Gold” or “Oil”, but “Humus” for healthy growth of a collaborative data ecosystem.

Based on our experience within the NFDI4Culture and NFDI-MatWerk projects we propose generalized knowledge graph based research data management solutions, which are applicable to other consortia. Our solution covers the construction of a common NFDI core ontology adapted to specific domains via domain extensions as a basis for a knowledge graph (KG) providing information about a consortium and its related research data and software resources. This KG serves as a backend for the web portal that enables interactive access and management of this data. Already implemented for NFDI4Culture and to be adapted by NFDI-MatWerk, this solution might serve as an example solution also for other consortia. We are synchronizing our efforts with ongoing work to implement knowledge graph based research data management in NFDI4DataScience.

Abstract This article considers the relationship of Hittite festival rituals and mythical accounts, based on the mythical narrative of the feast of the sun god, in which the invited deities are not satiated despite sufficient food and drink. It is shown that the myths of the disappearing and returning deities were originally invocations or supplications (mugawar) incorporated into ritual acts that were intended to summon a deity. From the Middle Hittite period onward, rituals for invoking deities (mukeššar) seem to have been distinguished from ritual offerings to deities, which could then be called festival rituals (EZEN₄). In the process, an occasion-bound invocation of a deity due owing to some emergency situation may have been reinterpreted as an invocation to guarantee the deity’s presence, which in the further course lost its significance for being written down while the ritual descriptions gained in importance. At the same time, the invocations may have been literarily processed and expanded, e.g., by southeast Anatolian descriptions of rites of evocation.
