Health-protective behavior during the pandemic: Does media exposure to COVID-19 information matter?
  • Dec 31, 2023
  • Jurnal Kajian Komunikasi
  • Kholidil Amin + 4 more

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted people to seek and get information on COVID-19 through the mass media or social media. It is expected to impact their beliefs, attitudes, and actions toward health-protective behavior. Purpose: This study aims to see how health-protective behavior amid a pandemic is predicted by exposure to COVID-19 information in the mass media and on social media. Methods: The current study advances the theory of planned behavior by surveying 413 persons cross-sectionally on Java Island, Indonesia. PLS-SEM was employed to assess measurement and structural models in order to answer the hypotheses. Results: The findings reveal that using mass media and social media to receive knowledge about COVID-19 strongly predicts intentions and behavior to apply preventive behavior, which is mediated by perceived behavioral control (PBC) and attitude. Conclusion: This research concludes that social media and mass media significantly positively influence three important aspects of forming behavioral intentions, and it also found that attitude, subjective norms, and PBC are important aspects of existing behavioral intention. Implications: This research also looks at the theoretical and practical ramifications. Theoretically, media use is related to the application of the TPB model. Practically, the government needs to optimize the mass media and social media use to reach the public with lots of valid, easy-to-understand COVID-19 information and generate positive optimism from the public.

To cope with the problem, the Government of Bandung City initiates facilitation to empower the MSME to improve their business values and status and adopt the market development and preferences in terms of digital marketing, environmental friendliness, and green innovation. Purpose: The current research aimed to measure the improvement of street vendors’ capabilities of utilizing communication technology and developing green innovation. Methods: The research used a quantitative approach with a questionnaire spread to the street vendors around the City. It was participated by 89 street vendors. Result: The research demonstrated positive and strong relationships between street vendors’ skill, administration, and saving capabilities as independent variables and innovation as dependent variables. Meanwhile, the independent variable has less relation with innovation, which means they are still dependent on being capable of making green innovation. Conclusion: Referring to the research result, the facilitation and assistance programs should improve street vendors’ business skills, particularly in green practices for innovation. Implications: The research revealed the strong capability of street vendors in using digital communication, such as social media and e-commerce. Nevertheless, further research is required to examine the relationship between digital media and e-commerce capabilities in the adoption of green innovation.

Background: Misinformation and harmful content spread on social media have sparked the anti-hoax movement. This research examines the motivations and participation of network users in combating hoaxes on digital platforms. Further investigation is required to examine the impact of framing, collective identity, and action factors on the propensity of netizens to actively engage in combating online hoaxes. Purpose: This study focused on framing, collective identity, and action components to explore the motivations behind netizens’ involvement in the anti-hoax movement on social media. Methods: In this study, web scraping, surveys, and netnographic techniques were employed to examine the motivations and trends of participation in the anti-hoax campaign. Data were collected from active members of MAFINDO on Facebook to facilitate this investigation. The intentional construction of the anti-hoax movement, the establishment of a collective identity, and the alignment with the values of internet users were crucial elements in driving active engagement. The community employed efficacious tactics to counteract misinformation, such as verifying facts and presenting opposing viewpoints. These findings demonstrate the efficacy of social media platforms in resolving online problems. Conclusion: The effectiveness of the anti-hoax campaign hinges on factors like framing, collective identity, and agency that inspire internet users to engage and tackle the challenges of misinformation on social media. Implications: This study emphasizes how social media plays a key role in mobilizing internet users to fight hoaxes through effective framing, shared identity, and customized action factors.

Background: The Abdi Dalem Keraton Yogyakarta is a state apparatus that has dedicated his life to the Palace and has a role as an agent for preserving culture, especially Javanese culture. This is manifested in the way they communicate and also the way the Abdi Dalem dress. The actions taken by the Abdi Dalem reflect that they are living examples of Javanese culture, and it is their duty as agents to preserve it. Abdi Dalem is often perceived as being attached to something traditional or old-fashioned. Purpose: The research was conducted to analyze and describe the perceptions of Generation Z about the Royal Palace Servants of Yogyakarta. Generation Z was chosen because this generation is known as the digital generation and has main characteristics in terms of mastery over technology and information, making this generation very close to the digital world, and then how the digital generation perceives or sees Abdi Dalem, who are traditional and far from digitalism. Methods: This study uses a quantitative approach and survey methods. Data was collected using a questionnaire, with the response being Generation Z, who live in the Yogyakarta area. Conclusion: Based on the stages of forming perceptions starting from stimulation, organizing, interpreting-evaluating, storing, and recalling. The results of the study show that the formation of Generation Z’s perception of Abdi Dalem is limited to people who work at the Palace, the Yogyakarta Palace reminds Generation Z of Abdi Dalem but not Javanese culture. The language and clothing of the Abdi Dalem also do not stimulate the perceptions of Generation Z, nor do the media stimulate the formation of Generation Z’s perceptions. Communication approach of Gopay’s digital alms platform
  • Jun 30, 2023
  • Jurnal Kajian Komunikasi
  • Budi Santoso + 4 more

Background: According to the 2018 World Giving Index by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), Indonesia ranked first in the world giving index for the first time. However, the emergence of digital alms practices in Indonesia has sparked controversy surrounding their compliance with usury laws, a deeply held belief in Islam. This has created an enigma within the Islamic community, as the Indonesian Ulema Council works to establish legitimacy for these practices. Given the multi-layered nature of these practices in society. Purpose: This paper aims to elucidate how the provider, specifically GoPay in this case, communicates digital alms to the public and how the Islamic community in Indonesia perceives and accepts it as a customary practice. Method: A qualitative research approach was employed for this article, focusing on conducting in-depth interviews and examining future studies and regulations pertaining to digital alms programs. Results: The findings of this study indicate that the implementation of digital alms programs has prompted a shift in the community’s giving habits from traditional direct methods to digital methods. This shift offers convenience to donors, who now have numerous options available to them. However, it is important to note that traditional beliefs surrounding alms emphasize direct interaction between the giver and the receiver, raising concerns about the potential for manipulation of alms before they reach the intended recipients. While this innovation has gained significant traction within the Islamic community, the use of financial technology introduces the possibility of inaccuracies and raises questions about the acceptance of its processes. Therefore, additional coordination and oversight with relevant parties are needed. Conclusion: Introducing digital alms programs has engendered new practices within the community for activities like almsgiving, enabling cashless transactions. However, there are still challenges to address, including ensuring the reliability and integrity of the process. This requires collaboration and supervision among stakeholders. Implications: The introduction of digital alms programs has prompted a transformation in community practices related to almsgiving and similar activities by embracing cashless methods.
